File rename function

I am a very new to Lightroom so I appologize ahead of time if this is a stupid question.  I am trying the use the rename function and continually come up with duplicate sequence numbers.  The rename preset is set up as follows: (sequence number) (my name) (Date) (original file name).  I rename, convert to dng, down load from a flash card and import all in one step.  This seems to work fine and all the sequence numbers are in order and sequencial.  When I import files already on a hard drive and rename them using the same rename preset, the sequence number start over againat one.  All pics are in the same hard drive and the same catalog.  How do I get the sequence number to be a unique number identifying only one pic?
Rip

For imports, the numbering is pretty clear and works as follows:
Token
Meaning
Import#
Increments   on each import, spanning different LR sessions. Starts with value Import Number in Catalog Settings
Image#
Increments   on each imported photo, spanning different imports and LR sessions. Starts   with value Photos Imported + 1 in Catalog Settings
Sequence#
Increments   on each imported photo within one import, being reset with next import, starting   with what you specify in Start Number in the import dialog
Note: LR3 (up to and including 3.5RC) has a bug as where Start Number is added to the last used Image Number before Import, leaving holes in the Image Number sequence if Start Number is set to anything else than 1 when using Image Number.
For renames after import, Sequence Number always starts at the value indicated in Start Number and Image Number always seems to start at 1.

  • File Renaming function

Is the new renaming function in ML limited to TextEdit and Preview? I am unable to get the function to work in any of the microsoft office apps.

Sorry what do you mean? Topic File Renaming? Do you mean Save As function then you rename a file to have original and updated/edited versions?
In the New OS X there is a feature called Versions which is only supported by Apps that support that new (and IMHO terrible) feature. If the App does not support it, it is not avauilable and you have to use the old Save As.

  • Application server File renaming function module creation - sample code

I want to rename a file from application server using function module.
Can somebody tell me is there is any such sap provided function module
is there? If not please tell me what should be abap routine to create such
    a function module.
    Thanks in advance....

You need to create a logical file name using FILE transaction. Then create a logical path and assign the physical path (actual path on app. server) to the logical path. While defining the physical filne name you have the option of selecting from the list of 'reserved word' available. For e.g. <DATE>, <TIME> etc.
    Steps are:
    1) Execute transaction 'FILE'.
    2) Create a logical file path.
    3) Assign Syntax Grp (Operating Systems) to above logical file path. You need to create the syntax group to identify the physical path in the application server. This step actually assigns the physical path to the logical path.
    4) Create a logical file.
    5) Assign the physical file name to the logical file. You have lots of system reserved word to choose from to suffix your file name with date and time etc.
The physical file name is used by the function module FILE_GET_NAME at runtime to compose a complete platform-specific file name.
For more information, see [renaming a file on the application server;.

  • File-renaming functionality for book does not work as expected

    Adobe Framemaker 8.0
I am on Windows XP. Dell computer. Xerox printer.
I follow the basic instructions for renaming a file in a FM book (To change the name of a document in a book:
    1. In the book window, select the file you want to rename, and then choose Edit > Rename File.
    2. Type the new name of the file and press Return or Enter. When the alert message appears, click OK to update other files in the book.) but I do not get past step 1. Instead an error message comes up that says "The text cannot be changed. To change the name of this file, please display filenames."
What is meant here by "filenames" and how/where would one display such?

Thank you indeed! I was with your help able to rename the file. However, the Book Error Log barked at me that it couldn't open BadFileName (a reference not to the file I renamed but another file which I not so elegantly dubbed "Conten ts" (with an unintended space between "n" and "t"--maybe this spacing is the reason behind its being dubbed bad?) since it could not be found. Should I disregard the error message or play along and rename "Conten ts" to "Contents". If that's all I need to do to get rid of the error message then of course, I'll do it. Thank you for answering my last question--whether or not you answer this one. Cheers, Siobhan

  • Batch file rename.  I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?

The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function and it won't work.  I took out the slashes and worked fine.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?  I should point out that I want to leave most of the name intact just change the first word in each name.  Also the files I'm working with are in PDF format.

That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

  • Elements 10 Organizer Rename Function Not Working Fully

Have just upgraded from Elements 9 to Elements 10 and used the File -> Rename function to rename 3000 files with a new Base name beginning 'Base' the process reported it had completed and did not provide any additional messages - but checking the result not all files were renamed and a large number were left behind with the original Base name. Hi Jon
Lastly the function 'Export' which solves the Rename issue but does not export Album tags which are themselves Key Word Tags as I used the Key Word tags to create the Albums is sloppy from a programming point of view. The first two issues were present in PSE 9 and I was sort of hoping they would have been fixed by now in PSE 10 and they are not. David
There is no such thing as 'album tags'.
Tags are keywords attached to a file to enable easier search. You know that tags can be read by many softwares including Windows explorer. That is, provided the tags are not only kept in the database, but also written to the files, which you can do if you want from the Organizer.
To give you another explanation about albums (also called collections) than the one in the Organizer help, I'll simply define an album as a list of files in a given order. There are many way to implement albums in various softwares created around a database like the Organizer, Lightroom, Aperture and a lot of others. Each one is a particular feature of the database to keep the lists and orders. The general rule is that albums can't be read by other software, with the exception of Lightroom with Elements catalogs (from Adobe, based on the same sqlite database). You can't either store the information about what you call 'album tags' in each individual file : there is already no clear standard in the way metadata like tags or captions are kept in a file.
So, there is no bug nor issues in the Organizer or in any other software because albums can't be saved within the files.
    But...
There is a workaround suggested in the prior posts.
To say which files are in an album, you only have to use a standard keyword, for instance say you want a 'Christmas' album, you create a standard keyword : 'isinachristmasalbum' and assign it to each member of the album.
When you retrieve the exported files by reimporting them, the tag will enable you to select all the files of the album and enter them in a a new album.
The missing part of the album, the order of the files will be lost.
    But...
If you have renamed the files of the album with the starting text + order number, the information will be stored in the file names themselves!
By the way, if your concern is not about file order, but files count, I don't think albums are the right tool for you.

  • File renaming and second copy

If I import RAW and tick 'Copy as DNG' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are not DNG and not renamed.
If I import JPEG and tick 'Copy' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are renamed!
So why in case of RAWs are the second copies not renamed? This bug precludes the use of more than one camera at a shoot.
    LR3.6
How come??? I recall this was an old issue; is it too difficult to repair such a simple bug???

If this is changed, make sure it is a choice as otherwise the copy function is of no use to me. I do not want LR to make changes to the original files that I copy for backup in any way. I use the function for how it was designed (a temporary back up with no changes made to the files from the card) and make back ups of the files in the LR catalog separately. Once everything is safely backed up I can then delete the temporary copies.
I would guess there are lots of others like me who don't want this situation changed as we have been doing this for several years now since prior to LR 1 when the thing was in beta..

  • File Renaming Shortcut?

Hello I would love to get a shorcut to rename files faster, as I juggle with a lot of sample music files, i got to rename them them for my organisation for later use. And in Ableton , my music , software, it is quite easy to rename any files , you just click on anything , then cmd+R, and that's it, and I would like to have the same option on mac , but there is no rename function. Could it be under another name, I went to system preferences > keyborad> Shortcuts, and could not find it!

Selecting a file/folder in Finder & pressing Enter works here. I don't know any way to change that to Command R.

  • File Renaming Tool

Our IT department has been requested to install a bulk renaming tool that can rename and adjust multiple filenames for some projects in the company. Does Microsoft have a tool for this or what is Microsoft's recommendation? Our CIO does
not want to use "Bulk Rename Utility" because it is from overseas. I've seen some other tools, but was hoping MS has one available. Thanks for the help!

    Hi,
Windows have its own rename functions, we could simply right click on the file that we want to rename, then input the wanted name and press enter.
If we want to rename several files at one time, we may select all the files at one time, then right click on the first one, type one name, and then each of the files will be saved with the new name and a different sequential number at the end (for example,
Renamed File (2), Renamed File (3), and so on).
    See: Rename a file
If the above method won't meet the requirements, we may also consider to use Windows PowerShell.
Use PowerShell to Rename Files in Bulk

  • BUG: Multiple file renaming

I believe I have found a bug in the file renaming routine in LR:
I store related .jpg and .nef (raw) files in the same folder. Each .nef has a corresponding .jpg version with the same file name.
I wanted to rename all the files in one folder by selecting all, pressing F2 and entering the file name settings I wanted.
When I started the process, it successfully renamed the first .jpg but stopped with an error, saying that the next file (the corresponding .nef file) could not be found.
What happened was the following: when LR renamed the .jpg, it also renamed the corresponding .nef (which I personally think is great). But when the renaming routine moved to the next file on the list, it couldn't find it, because it was the .nef file already renamed together with the .jpg file.
Ha, I thought, you're not outsmarting me! I then selected the .jpgs only and tried to rename them all, hoping that the .nefs would be processed as well.
That worked fine, BUT: the .nefs were then shown in the library with the '?' sign on them, signaling that LR could not locate them anymore.
What happened? LR successfully renamed .jpgs and .nefs, but did not update the library file for the nefs (ONLY), still showing them with their old file names, when in effect they had been renamed (as I could see in Windows Explorer).
To summarize: you can rename a folder full of .jpgs and .nefs by just selecting the .jpgs, but LR will update the new file name in its library only for the .jpgs. For the .nefs, you need to hold LRs hand and point it to the new file name for each individual file.
Unless I miss something basic here, I think that's something which should be fixed.
    Christian Spyr

    Hi Chris,
fotunately I already made such a modification to ADDT´s predecessor "MX Kollection", and as the core files didn´t change, it will assumingly work the same:
    1. add the following function to the file "includes/common/KT_functions.inc.php":
replace all chars from uploaded filenames other than alpha-numeric and "_" and "-" and "." with an underscore (_)
    function KT_websafe_filename($text) {
    return preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z0-9\-_\.]+/", "_", $text);
    2. change line 120 in file "includes/common/lib/file_upload/KT_FileUpload.class.php":
    old: $fileName = KT_replaceSpecialChars($fileName, 'filter');
    new: $fileName = KT_websafe_filename($fileName, 'filter');
This modification will of course *always* be renaming the uploaded file accordingly -- but you´ll need no fancy trigger and anything else.
Please backup the 2 original files !!

  • Add Delete Characters to rename function

At times it is useful to remove characters from file names. This is not possible at present with the rename function. (As a work around, I wrote an AppleScript to that does it in the Finder.)
    Add thge following options:
"Delete" -- box to enter number -- "characters from front of file name".
"Delete" -- box to enter number -- "characters from end of file name".
The extension should be preserved, unless change is requested with another change option.
Because the underscore character "_" is used in many file names, it would also be nice to have:
"Delete" -- box to enter number -- "characters before '_' ".
"Delete" -- box to enter number -- "characters after '_' ".
If for any reason the deletion of more characters after the '_' is requested than there are characters in a file name, only the existing characters should be deleted. File extensions should never be deleted or truncated.

  • Creation date used during ingest File Rename incorrect

    Hi
    System:
    Windows 7 64-bit SP1
    Prelude CC v2.0.1 (118)
I've been using Prelude about 9 months now and have got used to it's foibles.  Hopefully some of these are being addressed for future releases.
But the recent update seems to have introduced some problems that I didn't notice in previous versions.
My query is on the new File Rename feature (the lower part of the Ingest panel).
I have a preset for renaming my clips.  I want to rename using:
Custom Text - I type this in depending on which location
Date - I select DDMMYY Creation Date
    Auto Increment - (01)
I have two issues using this preset, it could be me idk.
The first is that the Creation Date appears as today's date, not the one from the file as I would understand it.  I would prefer it to pick up the actual Creation Date as it shows in the Metadata of the clip and also the time (i know this has already been suggested by an FCP user).
The second is that If i rename a batch of files using the Auto Increment and then decide I want to add some more footage shot at a later date but maybe the same location.   I already have for example files labelled location_01 to location_15.  Now i want to ingest some more but starting at location_16.  Currently, I can't change the AutoIncrement field setting as you can in Bridge CC.
How I wish u could just implement the Batch rename features of Bridge in Prelude.  I am trying to switch from Bridge as it doesn't play nicely with video on my system.  It's a pain.  I love Prelude but can u please improve the renaming function.
If the creation date was correct the auto increment feature would not be an issue because the files would be named differently.  As it is, ingesting tons of footage on the same day results in chaos.  Having to remember to manually change the date (I have it as a Custom Text field) is a nightmare and I can see forgetting to do it then it will be a mess.
Perhaps my workflow is slightly different to someone who works in say TV but it would be nice when I know the features present in Bridge applied to all the other Suite apps.
Any pointers would be REALLY useful because this is driving me insane at the moment.  And you guys are understandably reluctant to release details of future changes and features, so who knows you could be working on it right now.
    Thanks
Just found there is another post asking more or less the same but no comments

I'd like to second the request to be able to change the starting value of the auto increment function when ingesting in Prelude CC.
If I'm ingesting batches of footage either from different cards or at different times, it creates a mess of both manual file renaming in Finder (or batch renaming—same issue of additional, unnecessary work) and also (sometimes?) getting "file ingest error" messages from Prelude because I've already imported a file with the Custom_Text_(01) name.

  • Files Renamed when importing to LR4 and now can't find them in LR3

    Help!  What should I do???
Yesterday I installed LR 4 Beta.  I had a folder with 300 images in it on LR 3, obviously all files had names.  I imported these photos into LR4 to work with LR4 and they were renamed in the process.  Now in my LR3 folder, all the files still have there old names and the "missing photo ?" and I assume that's because the name has been changed and LR3 can't find them.  Any thoughts on an easy fix?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

Thanks so much for helping me with this.
I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem.  Now that I look at the
    import settings that were used:
    1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
    also renamed.
    2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
    changed LR4 names.
    1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
    1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
    1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
    1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
    imported yesterday and are renamed.
    Thanks again,

  • Restoring from backup to new location + not wanting files renamed

Hi there - I am a newbie to this forum.
I have a Win XP machine that recently needed to have the hard drive wiped and the OS re-installed. Fortunately I had a recent backup of all my data so I'm in a good starting position for a restore. However I have some questions as the re-install of the OS has had a change in profile name.
Before my machine was wiped, I had a "Daniel" profile and so my "iTunes Media folder location" was set to C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\My Documents\My Music.
After my PC was rebuilt, a new profile was created called "dnl". iTunes has been re-installed (version 10.1.2.17). The first time I launched iTunes the "iTunes Media folder location" was set to C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music. I did NOT choose to have iTunes browse/load my files and so currently iTunes shows no files or playlists.
I have recreated the C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\My Documents\My Music folder from my backup so all the music files and the previous libraries are presently in this location. However even if I change the "iTunes Media folder location" within iTunes to point to the "old" location, it doesn’t find the files or libraries.
I have tried deleting the following files from C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music\iTunes:
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
I did this assuming that the next time iTunes was launched, it would refer to the old location (as specified as my "iTunes Media folder location"), find the old library files there and use them. However it seems to ignore them and simply re-creates the files above in the location I deleted them from.
So…I am unclear as to the best strategy to have iTunes point back to the old location to find the music files and retain all the playlists I had.
I found this thread: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364. It mentions a method that will find all the files in the old location and move them to the new location, retaining playlists, artwork etc. Once the data has been copied, it advises to delete the files from the original location.
However I see that it mentions checking the ‘Keep iTunes Media folder organized’ option. From reading other threads I know this to be a source of one very irritating problem – it renames all the file names. I have specifically ripped my music using software other than iTunes for the express purpose of being able to tag the filenames with more specific info than iTunes would. I like the files to named <artist>-<album>-<track no>-<track title>.<file extension> and am not a fan of the very basic filenames that iTunes assigns.
So…I want to have iTunes simply point back to the old location and not do any file renaming. I am happy enough to have iTunes simply point to a location that isn’t technically part of my current profile. I don’t have a desperate need for the files to be moved to the dnl profile.
So…I am guessing there has to be some other file (or registry setting?) that knows where best to point to? Can this modified?
I would be appreciative of any assistance.
    Thanks!

Hi Daniel, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The default location for the iTunes library folder is <Profile><Music>iTunes with the media folder at *<Profile>\<Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media*. For XP the <Music> folder is My Documents\My Music.
When iTunes starts up it looks for a set of library files in the last location it used. If that location is also the default location and it can't find the library files it assumes it has just been installed and creates a new set.
Changing the location of the *iTunes Media* folder in preferences does not change which set of library files it opens, nor will it automatically detect all the media in that location.
Ideally you should restore the folder iTunes and all its subfolders from your backup into *C:\Documents and Settings\dnl\My Documents\My Music* and start iTunes. All should work perfectly and, as far as iTunes is concerned, you will be using the same library as you used to. Any iDevices should sync without problems.
If you media was not is the usual locations or you are unable to restore the entire iTunes folder then things become more complicated. Post back if you still have trouble and I will try to go into more detail.

  • Custom File Renaming Template Keeps Changing

I'm having issues when creating a custom file naming template in Tiger with LR 1.3.1.
When importing files, I created a custom template to rename the files with YYMMDD_{original file suffix}{Master}.tif to get this: 071217_12056Master.tif. The first import goes fine. But when I import another batch of files and choose the template all I get is 071217_Master.tif.
I tried creating the template by hitting F2 to rename the photo and get the same results. The really odd thing is that some of the other templates have their characteristics jumbled around so that what I thought was the "orig file-name" template might actually produce something like 071217_.tif.
The original file suffix suffers the worst in terms of disappearing without cause. This behavior was occurring in the 1.2 ver. as well. I've deleted every single template thru the editor, recreated them again and still get the errors.
Hopefully someone here can provide some clues?
    Thank you!

It sounds as though your import preset either isn't working or wasn't setup correctly.
Using the full screen import panel, make sure Copy or Move is selected and then select your Import Preset....what does the File Renaming panel look like? "Rename Files" should be ticked, Template should read "Custom Settings" (or the specific rename preset if you've saved it) and the sample should show the correct rename format, like so:
So does yours look like this, or different?
