File sharing: Need to be able to edit file & save to a shared folder on a different networked iMac's HD

We have new iMac's (running OS X 10.9.1) and they are all on the same network.  There is a folder on computer #1 (folder is named: 2010) with Word & Excel documents in it (we have to use those instead of Pages & Numbers) that needs to be shared and accesible by computer #2.  This has been done successfully.
The problem is:  When I make changes to the files from computer #2 (or if I add a folder), the files are not accesible on computer #1 any longer...you can see there are new files or folders, but you can't interact with them from computer #1 if they were created on computer #2.  From computer #2, I created a folder named "2014 Ledger" in the shared folder, and when I look at the newly created folder on computer #1, it has a red dot with a minus sign in the bottom right?  When I click on it, it gives me an error.
I called Apple Care, but they didn't seem to know how to be able to edit & save a shared file on one computer, but keep the main file saved to the hard drive of the other computer.  We did this for years with our PC's on a network, so I guess I just figured Mac's could do it as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how we can access the files on computer #1 after they've been altered and saved or created on computer #2?
These screen shots are from computer #1 (the computer where the folder should be hosted on the hard drive):

Now I'm unsure if I need to change permissions to the 300GB worth of files on that external drive. (that's question #1.)
If you want to allow anyone accessing as "user" to be able to read or write all files on that volume, you could do that. You should also be able to set the volume attribute to ignore ownership:
http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=mac&seqNum=256
If I look at those files from a client machine, logged in as 'user', Finder tells me they belong to 'unknown'.
I imagine that they're owned by a user with a user ID that's not present on that machine.
Question #2: If I understand correctly, the settings on the server's Sharing preferences pane only apply for ACCESS to the shared folder (i.e. they make it possible to log in via AFP).
If that were the case, there would be no need for the "Read & Write" / "Read Only" setting in the Sharing panel.

    Thanks again for quick response.
I have requested users who are having this issue to try check in/ check out, and share the results.
    Result with CheckIn/CheckOut:
User was able to check out but no edit option.
'Edit Document' option under 'Files' tab was greyed out. I did check permissions every thing seems fine he has full control over the site and document library.

  • I need to be able to edit Japanese content, but with English UI

I am a native English speaker, working in Japan and quite often I need to be able to create and edit Japanese content as well as English. My Japanese isn't quite up to navigating the Japanese language version of InDesign (and Illustrator).
In the previous version of CC I could fool InDesign and Illustrator to give me the extra Japanese settings (Kinsoku etc.) in English by installing as Japanese language in the CC settings, but having my Mac OS language to English. This worked fine. But now I've tried the same with the new CC 2014 apps, and if I install the CC2014 apps with with the CC language set to Japanese, the applications have their UIs set to Japanese (PhotoShop actually gives me the option to change to English, where Illustrator and InDesign do not).
Is there any way I can use the English language InDesign and Illustrator yet have those settings as before? There must be plenty of people working on multilingual documents out there.
Am I missing an option somewhere, or a similar trick?
Wouldn't it be better to have special language formatting available as options in all localised versions?

Thanks again, but I can't see any way to do it. If I'm changing languages in CC it installs the version with the language I have selected, and changing the language doesn't change anything, or asks me to update so that it can install that language.
The tips on the page you linked to are actually how I originally got it working in the previous CC version, and it's been working fine. But it seems things have changed in CC 2014. It just follows the language you have selected when you install these apps, not the OS language.
Paying an extra $180 on top of an already expensive application for Harb's World Tools Pro just seems like a kick in the pants given that the abilities are already there in the application, they're just hidden for some unknown reason. I've sent Adobe a feature request. And until there's a solution I guess I'll be stuck on the old version. It's not the end of the world I guess.

the simple thing is that you need to have the folder on the xi server if you have to use NFS to access it.
Else FTP would be the choice. I am not sure how it would act in case you are able to mount the external folder on to the XI server. As somebody from your network team if thats a possibility and try to access it via NFS else you will have to go for FTP only.

  • Need to be able to edit a pdf from a web browser

I have a client who wants to be able to have a custom pdf form on their website which will allow users on windows or mac to fill in the selected areas and save to the server as well as a copy for the user. I do web maintenance for the company already so since I'm on a Mac I would think the app has would have to to be OSX so I can first customize the main pdf fields where name address etc go and to retrieve any completed forms on their server.
Any pointers in how to do this?
    RD

You might try PDF Browser Plugin by Schubert of Germany. It will allow you to "fill out" forms from the web created in PDF.  It not only works with Safari, but also with mostly FireFox, SeaMonkey, Camino, and Can on iCab, OminiWeb, Opera as well. It does allow for filling out forms on line then you print the form and fax or send in. This is for standard forms that have not been saved to enable Reader Rights.
Until Acrobat 6, any Acrobat or Reader installations that had PDFviewer Plugin installed would work on any Browser on the Market. Its only after, Apple Switched to OSX that Adobe refuse to update the plugin to allow to work with anything other than Safari. That's when Mr Schubert stepped up to file the void.

  • Modal "File Save As" action ignores folder

I am attempting to execute a set of actions containing two "Save" commands. The first works fine while the second does not. (The destination folder is ignored and the file is saved in the same folder as the first Save.) The only difference I can see is that the second "Save" is modal and the other is not. The fact that the destination folder is contained in the action makes me think this ought to work and I'm missing something obvious.

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

  • "...write access was not granted" - shared folder

    Hi
When I try to save files (edited) to shared folder on another Mac - I get these errors:

Or maybe it’s a common mistake on the user side.

  • Have to keep setting folder permissions on folders within a shared folder

My husband and I both have iMacs and had problems with permissions being set to read only for everyone but him on his iMac. The problem is within a shared folder named Butterflies on his iMac. In a previous question I posted I was told to set ACLs using terminal for all files and folders in the Butterflies folder which is within the documents folder on his computer.
This worked at the time but now the same problem is cropping up. He tried to run the same command on his computer (he is logged in as administrator) and the message comes up "unable to reset permissions" for each file in the Butterflies folder. We upgraded both computers to OS X 10.5.7 when it came out a while back but this started happening just yesterday. Is this some problem requiring an update we haven't installed yet?
    Thanks in advance...
    Kim

The important thing to remember with inherited ACLs is that new files must be newly created or copied into the folder hierarchy for them to properly inherit the new permissions. If you make a new folder on your Desktop, and then move it into your sharing folder by drag and drop, it won't inherit the ACL properly and will still be read-only for others. It you have existing files that you want in the share folder, hold down the option key while dragging them in. That will make new copies of them, and then you can delete the originals.
Also note that some apps (like Apple's TextEdit) will ignore the ACL if you try to directly save their files in the ACL folder. Save TextEdit files in a temporary location first, and then copy them in to the sharing folder.
Also, be aware that most backup programs will strip off ACLs from the backups if the ACLs were inherited from a parent folder. Apple's Disk Utility, Time Machine, Finder, etc all have this problem. If you use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups then you can be sure that all your inherited ACLs are being copied properly.
I know these ACL limitations are irritating. I use inherited ACLs to share files between my wife's and my user accounts, and these limitations sure irritate me. I think that ACLs are poorly implemented in OS X. I hope and wish that ACL handling will be improved in future OS X releases.

  • I am an English teacher, and my school just bought iPads for my students and me. I want to use Dropbox for file sharing and to be able to edit their work on my iPad so that my students will be able to open their work from Dropbox and see my corrections.

I would like my editing marks and comments to save in Dropbox in a contrasting color. The students will then need to be able to open the document and make corrections, then save again to Dropbox. Thanks for any ideas!

Thanks, everyone, for these helpful suggestions. Before we got the iPads last week, we were saving compositions from desktops onto the school server. There was not a problem with the students seeing other students' files, so I didn't password protect them, but there was the issue of copying all their work onto a thumb drive so I could grade it at home. I like accessing files in the cloud much better. Under the previous system, I was also printing out their work and marking it up for the students to correct before I put it on our class web site. Now under this new system, I would like to go paperless, sharing my digital revisions with the students as they perfect their work before I put the final products online. This usually takes 3 or more revisiosns. So far, I have tried the following apps: Quickoffice, Documents to Go, Writeup, Plaintext, Pages, Essay, and Droptext. The students and I have no trouble saving into and retrieving from Dropbox, but there is no good way so far for me to edit their work in color so that they can open up the file and see my comments in order to make their revisions. I do have this capability on my laptop and desktop by using the redlining feature in Word. It's just that I'd rather be able to use my iPad for this purpose. I will check out Evernote.

Hi there, I need to be able to read raw files from an Olympus Stylus 1 via CS5 and Lightroom 4.  I have downloaded Raw file plug-in v 6.7.1 but still can't read the files?

    Read this table http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The Olympus Stylus 1 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and CC.
It is not compatible with CS5 or older and never will be.
If you do not want to upgrade to CS6 or CC then you can dwonload the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Stylus 1 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5.

  • Can not edit file on network shared folder after upgrading to windows 7

Merry Christmas and happy new year,
Due to some configuration changes on a specific application, I have forced to upgrade OS of a few number of workstations from Windows XP to windows 7. After upgrading I am facing a strange problem on WIN7 workstations. These workstation are member of a Windows
2008 R2 Active Directory domain which also has a Windows 2003 advanced server additional domain controller. Also there are a number of shared folders on some member servers (all windows 2003) which are mapped as network drives at user logon. Before upgrading
mentioned workstations to WIN7, users was able to edit his/her files on all of mapped network drive according to his/her permissions without any problem on their WINXP workstations, But after installing windows 7 they begin facing problem on one of these mapped
network drives and the problem exactly is when they edit a file, in more specific word an excel file, and then try to save, the excel returns an error message of "document not saved" and exit the excel program. It becomes more strange when you learn
that the edited excel file is disappeared and replace with some "tmp" file. If user copy the excel file to his/her own desktop, edit it and then copy it back to its original place on mapped network drive, it will be replaced normally with its older
version. In other words if user wants to edit an excel file on that specific network drive, he/she must edits it somewhere else and then replace it on the network drive. If the same user uses a WINXP box, there will be no problem.
Can anybody help me to fix the issue?
    TIA
    Bijan

    Thank you Karen,
The problem is fixed, but my case was none of what you suggested. In fact I have
another problem which I described in another question and it was of the root of this excel file issue. I describe what I have done to fix the latter problem hope to help fixing similar issues to mine.
Okay, as it is described in the
question, I was not able to open a shared folder with its UNC address while it could be mapped as a network drive without any problem. I examined what I was replied and some other ways, came to no result. I decided investigate a similar shared folder in
permissions to problematic one to see if the problem is repeated. So I created a folder and shared it with similar permissions and examined it. Surprisingly there was no problem. It was wise to remove sharing of the problematic folder and share it again to
see if the problem resist. But when I tried to remove sharing I received an error message saying that
the shared folder is related to a DFS root. When I took a look at the DFS roots of domain there was no sign of the problematic folder (that made me recall that I created a DFS root with problematic folder mistakenly and removed that DFS root).
After little searching, I found out that the problem could be caused by traces of the removed DFS root. Yep! I found the suspect! The registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DFS\Domain\problematic shared folder. I removed the key restarted DFS service and log off and on and Bingo!
This problem pops up a few more questions:
    1) Why is not the registry key related to removed DFS root deleted from the registry of windows 2003 server?
    2) Why was I able to browse this ex-DFS root shared folder without any problem in windows XP while it was problematic in windows 7?
    3) As there is no special client service for DFS and user can access DFS root targets like other shared folders what is the deference between shared resource access mechanisms in windows XP and windows 7 that caused the problem?
    Bests,
    Bijan
