Have to keep setting folder permissions on folders within a shared folder

My husband and I both have iMacs and had problems with permissions being set to read only for everyone but him on his iMac. The problem is within a shared folder named Butterflies on his iMac. In a previous question I posted I was told to set ACLs using terminal for all files and folders in the Butterflies folder which is within the documents folder on his computer.
This worked at the time but now the same problem is cropping up. He tried to run the same command on his computer (he is logged in as administrator) and the message comes up "unable to reset permissions" for each file in the Butterflies folder. We upgraded both computers to OS X 10.5.7 when it came out a while back but this started happening just yesterday. Is this some problem requiring an update we haven't installed yet?
Thanks in advance...
Kim

The important thing to remember with inherited ACLs is that new files must be newly created or copied into the folder hierarchy for them to properly inherit the new permissions. If you make a new folder on your Desktop, and then move it into your sharing folder by drag and drop, it won't inherit the ACL properly and will still be read-only for others. It you have existing files that you want in the share folder, hold down the option key while dragging them in. That will make new copies of them, and then you can delete the originals.
Also note that some apps (like Apple's TextEdit) will ignore the ACL if you try to directly save their files in the ACL folder. Save TextEdit files in a temporary location first, and then copy them in to the sharing folder.
Also, be aware that most backup programs will strip off ACLs from the backups if the ACLs were inherited from a parent folder. Apple's Disk Utility, Time Machine, Finder, etc all have this problem. If you use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups then you can be sure that all your inherited ACLs are being copied properly.
I know these ACL limitations are irritating. I use inherited ACLs to share files between my wife's and my user accounts, and these limitations sure irritate me. I think that ACLs are poorly implemented in OS X. I hope and wish that ACL handling will be improved in future OS X releases.

When I play podcasts through the Music app, I can set x2 speed and it stays selected for all podcasts that I play. Here, it seems that I have to flip up the settings page and set x2 for each podcast I play. Why won't this setting persist across plays?

• Why do I have to keep setting up my iPad almost every time I start my iPad?

Lately-it seems that with greater freaquency my ipad is saying it is not setup, I can't do anything until I reset it all back up. it happens almost everytime i start up now. ARGH! does anyone have answers, it seems to have started after the last update.

No Problem Demo.. They said to keep trying they would get back to me later this week, she had to talk to the tech people that has a longer history than what she has availabe.. We also ran the diagnostics on the ipad and all is fine with the firmware and the battery.
One thing that leads me to believe i am locked out of the servers, when i do a restore through itunes I get that little lock in the window just above where it says the servers are unavailable.
I have also been intouch with verizon and they said they would run some diagnostics on there end and would get back to me, that was 2 weeks ago.

• Exchange Online - Set FOLDER permissions recursively in shared mailbox

I posted this in the 365 forums. Reposting here see if it gets any traction. Thanks
I have a shared mailbox that is being used instead of public folders. Having trouble with the folders within the shared mailbox syncing to the various users. Want to move folders out of the shared
mailbox but continually run into errors regarding permissions and I must manually find the offending subfolder and set permissions.
So, I have two questions:
1. How can I configure the shared mailbox so that all folders that are created, regardless of which user creates them, will inherit permissions. Any folder created should automatically have permissions
set to owner for a specific security group.
2. How can I set the permissions on these exisiting shared mailbox folders, recursively (all sub folders) ? I have tried the following:
Get-MailboxFolder –Identity user1:\Folder -Recurse | Add-MailboxFolderPermission -User user2 -AccessRights Owner
But I get an error that the mailbox is not found. I believe that the command above does not work on shared mailboxes.
I also found the following, but can not seem to get it to run. I have tried to run as a ps1 file and directly in powershell - I dont get any errors.
ForEach($f in (Get-MailboxFolderStatistics
[email protected] | Where { $_.FolderPath.Contains("/") -eq $True } ) )
$fname = "[email protected]:" + $f.FolderPath.Replace("/","\"); Add-MailboxFolderPermission $fname -User
[email protected] -AccessRights Owner
Write-Host $fname
Start-Sleep -Milliseconds 1000
}
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

First of all, why don't you just give permissions on the mailbox level instead?
If Office 365, the
Get-MailboxFolder cmdlet only works for you own mailbox. So you have to use the Get-MailboxFolderStatistics as shown in the example. You will need to adjust this to give permissions to the Root folder and its best to actually exclude some of the
folders.
The example below should work, note that there is practically no error handling there, so test it first. Also, if the access entry already exists, you will get error messages.
$mailbox = "[email protected]"
$folders = Get-MailboxFolderStatistics $mailbox | ? {$_.FolderType -ne “Root” -and $_.FolderType -ne “Recoverableitemsroot” -and $_.FolderType -ne “Audits” -and $_.FolderType -ne “CalendarLogging” -and $_.FolderType -ne “RecoverableItemsDeletions” -and $_.FolderType -ne “RecoverableItemspurges” -and $_.FolderType -ne “RecoverableItemsversions”}
Add-MailboxFolderPermission $mailbox -User [email protected] -AccessRights Reviewer #root permissions
foreach ($folder in $folders) {
$FolderPath = $folder.FolderPath.Replace("/","\").Replace([char]63743,"/") #with PowerShell v3 'fix'
$MailboxFolder = "$mailbox`:$FolderPath"
Add-MailboxFolderPermission "$MailboxFolder" -User [email protected] -AccessRights Reviewer

• I have to keep resetting my Time Capsule

I got a new MacBook Pro and I have to keep setting up the Time Capsule. It will work for awhile, like part of a day, and then I get the message that the backup was delayed and I reset the TC and set it up again. The TC is not new. I used it with my other computer which is a MacBook. I used the TC to set up everything from that onto my new MacBook Pro. Also, the TC feels very hot to the touch.
Thanks!

Hot to the touch is a bit hard to quantify, but if you cannot hold your hand on top of the device reasonably comfortably, the device is running too hot.
Make sure that there is plenty of airspace on all sides of the Time Capsule
Invest in a USB laptop cooler to rest the Time Capsule on
If it still runs too hot, you are risking further damage to the device. You'll need to take it to an Apple store to let them have a look.

• Hide Folders within a Sharepoint?

Is it possible, using any combination of POSIX and ACL permissions, under X Server 10.4.3, to render folders inside a sharepoint invisible except to those with permissions to view their contents?
I have the typical situation where I don't want one client to know that another exists. I'd need this to work for AFP, SMB, and FTP.
I'm aware that similar functionality can be achieved by creating a sharepoint for each client, but I have way too many clients for that.
I'd appreciate some advice. Experimenting is seriously hindered by having to restart the server to make changes in folder permissions take effect. (Egaads - what a bug.)

Hi,
Based on your description, my understanding is that to you want to grant a certain group of users to have access to a certain folder within SharePoint 365 library.
Navigate to the document library with the folders. Click on “…”then select “Shared With”, next click Advanced.
there should be an option for Manage Permissions. From there you will have to break the permissions inheritance (there should be a link or option called Edit permissions). Once the inheritance is broken, you can add or remove people as needed.

• Accessing certain folders within a SharePoint library by groups

Hello there!
Please, guys, give me some clarification. Is it possible at all to allow or prohibit access to a certain folder within SharePoint 365 library. A folder contais some files that I want a certain group of users to have access to it.
What I have now is to allow access to a certain file in the library which is quite laborious as long as I have more than 5000 documents in the library groupped into 50+ folders. Could I make some automatization in order to allow access to a folder for
a certain group of users automatically accordingly to an event in the calendar?

I have several pdf files in my computer which are organized in folders. I want to transfer them to IBooks (in my Ipad) and keep the folder structure I use in my computer. Is it possible to do it? Do I need any other app?

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...

• To set permisson for folders within a folder in KM Public documents

I have lot of folders created in Public documents section and permission to add more folders are given only to few users.
I want all the users to upload or download documents within these main folders.
ISSUE:
I do want want all the users to create sub folders within the main folders.I want them only to add/download documents so that there will not be any unstructured mess of folders.
I'm unable to set permission as described above. When i give "Read/Write" permission for all users within the main folders then user will be allowed to create sub-folders which i want to avoid.
Is there any method i can solve the above issue.
Thanks and Regards,
Pradeep

Hi Pradeep:
There is also a work around solution for this problem (which is not a direct way).
For this you need to create TWO iViews to the folder path:
1. Navigation iView: you might've already create this iView. Now make Everyone or your UserGroup as 'Read' only in Details > Setting > Permissions. Remove Read/Write to them.
2. Upload iView: Now create an 'Upload iView' to the same path (same as Navigation View). This way users can only upload content (files) in to the said folders and can't create the Folders.
Hope this helps and solves your issue.

• Setting the permissions to the personal folder in KM

Hi steffi,
I have created the KM iview using the path /~alias~/userhome/<user.id>/Personal Documents and i have assigned to one custom role and the newly created folder is visible to only the particular loggedin user.
Now my requirement is Folder which is created for the user in the userhome should have only the read the permissions, only the admin should have full control access.
I have set the Read permissions to the Userhome folder but it didnt worked.
Can you please help me to fix this.........??
REgards,
Mahesh

Hi Steffi,
Thanks for the reply. Only Admin will create the folders not the users.
Inorder to achieve that i have created the KM Navigation iview using the path "/~alias~/userhome/<user.id>/" and assigned to one custom role.
I have loggedin as a admin and created two custom folders in path KM Content-->userhome--><user.id>, and that reflecting correctly when i loggedin as a user but they are displaying with full Access.
I tried to the change the permissions of the custom folders which are created inside the Userhome, but they are in the disable mode i am unable to change the permissions. Please find the below screen shot.
When the user loggedin for the time he should only have the read access, Can you please tell me where do i need to change.
Please correct me if i am wrong.....

• Setting Folder Permissions on a Network Hard Drive

I have an iomega network hard drive (500gb) connected by ethernet directly to my airport extreme. I am the administrator for this home network and have full access to airport settings. I want to set permissions for individual folders on that drive so some users can read and write to them, and some users can only read them. All users need some read/write access to the drive, so I can't simply lock the entire drive. When I open the information screen for a folder on this drive, the "locked" check box will not stay checked, and I have no drop-down options in the permissions area. How do I set permissions for folders on this network drive?

• Permit SharePoint group to have contribute access at Folder level only and read permission at library level.

Is it possible to Permit SharePoint group to have contribute access at Folder level only and read permission at library level.
Ashish Baranwal To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge

Hi Ashish,
You can have special permissions for individual lists or libraries (or folders within a library) what you have to do is to go
to the manage permissions list or document library for the appropriate item or folder and stop inheriting permissions from Parent and then you can add any sorts of permissions you want uniquely to that item or folder.
Check for further reference.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18203.sharepoint-2013-break-document-library-permissions-inheritance.aspx
you have to break the inheriting permission of document library and assign the permission you want again you have to set the same for folder
level.
For your better understaning the concept check here
http://blog.pentalogic.net/2010/11/sharepoint-permissions-what-why-and-how-part-1-basic-principles/
While you probably won't come across this in your case, be careful when breaking security permission inheritance on the items in a a document
library or list. There are big performance hits. If you have inherited permissions on a library or list SharePoint only has to do one permissions check for all the contents. If you have unique permissions SharePoint has to check every document's permissions
before returning the contents of the library. This tends to become an issue when you have thousands of items, rather than
hundreds.

• How do I allow users to create folders in a shared folder where we all then have read/write access to those new folders?

I have three users who need to access a particular folder on one of our other Macs. The folder resides on the desktop of that particular Mac and it is set as "shared" with all of our accounts set to access the folder. When a user creates a new subfolder in that shared folder, the permissions are instantly set to allow the creator read/write access but the other users are only allowed read-only access. Is there a way to set the permissions so that any new folder created in that shared folder automatically gives read/write access to all accounts who are authorized access to that shared folder?

You should be able to take the permissions you have set and "apply to enclosed items." I am trying to attach a picture of what this looks like so my apologies if it does not work.
Highlight your folder you want and go to File>Get Info or command+I and at the bottom where it has Sharing and Permissions, click the lock button to authenticate. Click the gear and click "apply to enclosed items". See if that works.
