File sharing only works for users with Admin rights

Hi.
I am trying to set up file sharing in Lion Server but am having problems getting all my users access to shared folders. So far, only users that are "allowed to administer this server" are seeing shared files, even though they seem to have "read/write" permissions.
Can anybody tell me what I might be missing?
Is being allowed to "administer" the server different than truly being an Admin?
I want to allow users to read and write files, but not change any server settings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

What permissions are you setting on the share?  My guess is you are only using user, group, and other (POSIX).  You need to add an ACL to the list and then set read/write or full control.

  • SMB File Sharing only works for Admin Accounts???

I'm using a mac mini as a small file server. It will share files to WindowsPCs using SMB but there is a problem.
On the Option dialog where you select accounts to share files and folders using SMB only Admin accounts show up. This is far from ideal as I'd prefer to using Sharing Only or Standard accounts.
Is this a known issue? Is there a solution?

  • J4W 10.5 Login only works for users with associated device

    Hi all,
I just discovered that using J4W 10.5 and service autodiscovery, the login only works if the user has an Device associated.
Means that login is not possible if the user has only a controlled device profile.
We are using 10.5.1 Build 43318 - Is this a known Bug, or is this working with a different version?
    Regards,
    Peter

Which form of Service discovery are you using? Is it _cuplogin or _cisco-uds? Do you use a jabber-config.xml file? What is the directory source selected for Jabber, is it CUCM or AD?
Recently i had worked on a case with the following Scenario and  opened a Defect for it : CSCup74253
    Conditions:
With the following setup Service discovery fails and user has to manually login in Jabber specifying the IP address of the CUP server Service Discovery method : _cisco-uds or _cuplogin Directory connection type : UDS selected on service profile for the jabber user (no XML used) CUCM and CUP version :  9.1.2 Jabber version:9.7.0 and 9.7.1 End user page in CUCM : under controlled Devices only a Hardphone is selected with owner user id populated on device page of the phone in CUCM.
This BUG is solved for Jabber 10.5.1.  But in essence if you do not select ANY of the device be it soft-phone or hard-phone under user> controlled devices for that matter Serivce discovery will fail.

  • Flash player only works for user account installed with

    Hi all
I've different user accounts on my PC for me and my son.
Somehow Flash Player 10 only works for the user account I installed Flash player with.
In case I install it using my account it will not work for my son's account and vice versa.
    How can I solve this?
    Thanks
    Mario

I've struggled with this for a long time.  Here is what I've come up with.
    Adobe tech support recommended this:
    1. Log in as Admin
    2. Download the following zip file from here:
    www.supportflash.com/reset_all.zip
    3. Unzip this folder onto your desktop.
    4. Drag both files ‘reset_min_all.cmd’ and
    ‘subinacl.exe’ to your
    desktop.
    5. Run the reset_min_all.cmd file.
    6. It will open a DOS like terminal and start
    running through registry
    keys.
    7. When it is finished it will say “press any key
    to continue”.
    8. At this point you can install the latest Flash
    Player:
    for Internet Explorer:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ts/documents/tn_19166/Install_F
    lash_Player_9_ActiveX.zip
    other browsers:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
    9. Check that Flash Player is working for the
    Admin.
    10. Check that Flash Player is working as the
    other 2 users.
I hope this information helps. Feel free to reply
    if you need further
assistance on the issue discussed here or file
a new case if you want to

I can't recall whether I had to run this in each account or not.  It somewhat worked for me.  If the accounts were all set up as admin accounts, flash worked in all the accounts after that.  If one account was admin and the rest were limitied (I'm running xp home) it wouldn't work in the limited account.
I gave up and reverted back to flash player 9 via NOrton go back
It must be a permissons issue of some sort.  I just don't have the patience to figure it out.
    Good Luck,

  • User with admin rights can't access files through the command prompt

I have a strange situation where I have 2 users both setup exactly the same with admin rights on a 2003 (32 bit) server through an AD group membership, but one can do everything as expected but the other can't.
The one that can't is trying to execute a program is a command prompt and keeps getting access denied or invalid directory when trying to cd into the folder.   I double and tripled check the permissions and they are correct, this person should have
full admin.  In fact I did a effective permissions through explorer and it states full rights.  Along those lines this person can also access the folder in question through explorer just not a command prompt.
Has anyone seen this before ? and if so what can be done about it.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Can the user execute the program through explorer? In Windows Server 2003, the Users group does not have Read and Execute permissions to the command processor (Cmd.exe).

  • Users with Admin Rights

I've been looking through the Admin Ref Manual and Admin Guide (9.0.42) to see if there is a way to list the users that have been given Administrative rights on any given node within the node network on our server. I thought I remember seeing this documented somewhere but now I can't find it.
Does anyone know if it's possible and if so where is it documented?
Thanks in advance for you words of wisdom! :)

This is not possible in current WLS releases. Each "administrativedomain"
(referred to simply as a "domain" in WLS doc) corresponds to one andexactly
one "security domain". Users have the same permissions throughout the
    domain.
We are currently considering various options for how to support this inthe

  • Install for users with limited rights.

Is there a way to install Flash player so users with limited rights can perform updates?  I don't want to touch hundreds of machines each time a minor upgrade is released.  Security policies dictate that users cannot have local admin rights.

Hi, not that I have heard of. If you can't update, then most likely you are under Group Policy and the IT Department would be in charge of that.
If it is possible, then someone else would need to reply to you.

  • Mac to Mac file sharing not working for new folders

My folks got a new iMac today, and I've got a 2007 iMac on the same network. We're both running 10.8.2.
I had a few folders set up to share files. My public folder, Movies, and then a new fold called "Mom" that I set up specifically for them. The settings are identical on all the folders, but they can only access "Movies." If I try to access any other shared folders from their machine, I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "[insert folder name]" cannot be found."
I have read the Mac 101: File Sharing document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549?viewlocale=en_US) and followed the directions to no avail. I have removed and re-added all the folders, and still, only "Movies" is readable from their iMac (it too was removed and re-added). The settings for all the folders are identical to the settings for "Movies."
Additionally, after a short period any new folder I create and use as a shared folder will no longer allow me to rename it, even after I remove it from the shared folders list. The folders are not locked, and I have full admin privileges.
(Things work fine the other way, though: I can set up shared folders on their new iMac and access them just fine from my 2007 iMac.)

    hi there,
that error message sounds like you placed a shared folder within a parent folder that is not shared. It also can help to boot into Recovery Mode (pressing Command and R simultanously when hearing the startup tune), launch Disk Utility, select the disk containing your OSX installation (usually named Macintosh HD) and choose Verify Disk Permissions. Should any problems be reported select Repair Disk Permissions. Once that is finished, reboot normally.
Though unlikely, it might have happened during all the folder removing and readding that some Permissions are out of sync. So checking these Permissions is merely a precaution
Once you are back in "normal" OSX using your admin account, try this:
Open Terminal from the Utilites folder
enter the following commands one line at a time:
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family/Movies
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family/Mom
    chown -R <placeholder> /Users/Shared/Family
    chmod -R 755 /Users/Shared/Family
Be sure to replace <placeholder> with your account's short name (no brackets!)
Now open System Preferences and select Sharing
Select File Sharing from the left pane
Click on the little plus and add /Users/Shared/Family to your shares (The subfolders are automatically included)
in the right most pane check the access privileges. They are set, so that you can read and write to those folders, while everyone else can only read. If you want everybody to have read and write privileges, use 777 instead of 755 within the terminal last command.
Now the other computers should be able to see and use the shared folder you just created.
If you create individual user accounts on your machine for every family member you want to access the shared folders, you can choose far more sophisticated levels of access privileges.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • File sharing not working for any new accounts

I am using the latest version of Mavericks. For every new account I set up (Sharing, Administrative, Standard) trying to set up file sharing on a directory fails. When I set up the account, select a directory (on the boot drive or on an external drive) to share and do a get Info it always shows "Fetching..." on the new account. If I try to set that directory to share from an account in SysPref>Sharing when I click on the directory and try to set the account to share, even though the account shows up in the list of accounts to use, when I select any new account it does NOT show up as selected for sharing. It is as though the new account isn't quite being correctly set by the system. If I launch and look at any new account in WorkGroup manager they appear to be normal but cannot be used in File Sharing. I am really scratching my head on this, since I do everything I should to share a directory and all new accounts are just not working.

  • File sharing only works in one direction

I have a 2011 iMac and a 2012 rMBP. File sharing is turned on on both machines, but when I try to connect to the MBP from the iMac, it refuses the connection. I've noticed that it works if I check that box for my account for Windows file sharing (the one that stores your password using a weaker hash I think) on the MBP, but I shouldn't need to do that, hence why I'm here.
It of course works absolutely fine going from MBP to iMac.
Anybody experience something similar, or have any suggestions short of reinstalling the OS?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • SMB file-sharing only works if Firewall is Disabled

On my Mac, I've turned on File Sharing, enabled SMB sharing, and set the firewall to "selected services and applications" (SMB is listed as a service in the firewall application list). I cannot connect to the Mac from a Windows XP machine.
If I turn the firewall off, however, I can create a connection and transfer files from the PC client side. In addition, once I have established a connection I can then re-enable the firewall and continue transferring files.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Jeff

file sharing seems to be working... you will probably have to authenticate prior to beginning the file transfer though, so that is likely what is failing in the first instance.

  • Screen sharing only works for some computers

I have 3 computers on the same network.  For this thread I will refer to them as C1, C2 & C3.  All computers show in the sidebar as shared and I can look at all the files within these computers.
C1 and C2 can see C3 with screen sharing but no other combination works.  exp. C1 can't see C2, C3 can't see C1 or C2.
All computers are set the same and all worked a week or so ago.  Pref. Sharing has share files and share screens checked.  They all require an administrator to access.  They all have Firewall ON and Stealth and signed software are checked.
Can anyone give me some idea what might be going on here.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Do you mean that sometimes you can connect and sometimes you can't or that after connecting sometimes it stops working?
I haven't had any problems accessing my G5 running Leopard Server either from my MacPro or my Macbook over the internet which is much slower than a gigabit ethernet network. The G5 connects over a 24Mb cable connection and the other computers access the net using a DSL line (16Mb, but I have also done it over an 8Mb DSL line).

  • Workgroup Manager Find/Search only working for User ID

    Hello,
I recently updated my OD Master from 10.6 to 10.7, running on an Xserve 3,1.
The upgrade went fine and I have all my users and groups intact.
However, in Workgroup Manager, when I search by "Name Contains" it will not do a search on the "Name" field.
It appears that no matter what search method I choose, I can only search on the "Short Names" field.
I still have another 10.6.8 Server with WGM on it and it does not have this issue, so it appears to be a specific issue with WGM for 10.7 (I have seen the same thing using WGM for 10.8)
    Any ideas?

I noticed somewhat similar behavior a while ago - but my WGM window shows User Name (which is Name, not short name) and that can be searched by the last name, but not the first name.  As in a search using smith will find John Smith, but a search using john will not.  If the short name is jsmith, a search using jsmi will also work.
However, using the Search button in the top tool bar will work with real names.  This picture doesn't actually prove that, but i did search on a first name and it did find it.  IE, a search of John in real names found John Smith.
I think this is just how it is now.
