Files to large to put onto DVD

This is my first time working with FCP, and I have no training on it at all, so I'm pretty much trying to figure out what I'm doing on the fly. I'm trying make a DVD with movies I exported from FCP. When I tried to burn the disc, though, I got an error message saying there's not enough space, my files are to large by about 4GB. Every method I've tried of compressing the files or exporting them differently has just resulted in them coming out even larger, except exporting them as MPEG4s, which made them look terrible. The video were shot in HD, 2 are about 30m each, one was exported at 1.5GB, the other at 400MB, the other 2 are about 5m each, one is 198MB (a photo slide show set to music), the other 1.74GB.
Is there a way I can compress these down or anything without actually having to start over from scratch? Please help! I'm working on a memorial video for a fallen Soldier and need to get it out to his family ASAP!

I ask because you talk about compressing to MP4, HD, etc. None of which has anything to do with playable DVDs.
Duration is really all that matters. How long is the total length of all the clips. Then you select a preset in Compressor appropriate to the duration. 90/120/150 minutes.
I'm thinking that you might post to the DVDSP forum for greater insight and tips...

  • Files to large to put on a playable DVD?

Hi - welcome to the discussions.
You really do need to spend some time with the manual and tutorials in order to get a good handle on how this thing works... First up is the fact you'll need to downsample from HD to SD in order to get your footage to show up. DVDSP does not do 'blu ray', and the HD DVD format it did create is now no longer used. You have therefore only one option, and that's Standard Def.
In FCP you export your footage to Compressor to MPEG2 format, and the audio to AC3 (Dolby Digital) format. You'll end up with two files. These get imported to DVDSP as the assets you are authoring with. When using Compressor you have to get the settings right, and this is more of an art than a science - it really needs time and effort to get it right, but as a start point you have to encode the footage at a bitrate that will give you the best visual quality but at the smallest file size. This will vary according to your piece of footage, and no one size fits all here... however, you can make a good estimate of what you need from doing some bit budgeting. i.e. how long is the video file in minutes, and what size disc are you hoping to put it on? A simple bitrate calculator can be found here:
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
This will tell you that if you have 1.5 hours footage (I note you have far less), and you encode the audio to AC3 at 192Kbps, and you are hoping to fit this onto a standard recordable disc, single layer - often sold as 4.7Gb capacity, they actually hold 4.37Gb for what we need to do - you need to encode at no more than 6.5Mbps. However, lower bitrates mean smaller file sizes and so you can fit more footage onto your disc, but you will start to see a loss in visual quality if you go too low. Similarly, if you go higher you will gain file size, but you will also improve visual quality up to a point. There is a law of diminishing returns here - you get a bigger file, but you'll see little or no difference over 7.5Mbps. Also, if you encode at higher than 7.5Mbps you run the risk of the disc not playing back too well in a lot of players. Some will be fine, others may 'choke'. The top bit rate allowed for your video is 9.8Mbps, but don't go there... you'll get nothing but trouble with a recordable disc, IMO. As I said - this is an art and a science - you have to spend time to get this bit right.
Once you have got the bitrate sorted and the files encoded you can move to authoring.
DVDSP needs to be started up to create a 'SD' disc - not HD. You need to go through the preferences and make sure this is set correctly. When done, import the footage (which will be less than 4.37Gb in total).
From there you should be good to go - add the assets to a track, create a menu and make at least one button, and point that at the track to get it to play. Set the end jump for the track to go back to the menu and you're about done.
There are about a hundred 'gotcha's' along the way, which I can't hope to set out here. One simple one is to create a short piece of black 'slug' and add it as a small track (about a second long), and set this as your first play item. Jump from that to a menu and the disc will be a little more compatible with more players. The menu will also be an issue for some folk - the visual quality can be lower than you want - set your preferences in DVDSP for encoding to be at least 4.5Mbps and VBR. These encoding settings operate on the menus and anything that is not already encoded to the correct format.
If you want to add chapter markers to help skip along the track then do so - but don't add any commands to them... they'll play back just fine one after the other. If you want to create a chapter index menu then that's easy enough too - but you then start to get into the decisions about how the playback should operate (i.e. one chapter and return to the menu, or start at the chapter and continue playing). It gets steadily more complex!
Good luck with it - come back with questions if you run into issues.

  • Quickest Way Of Getting H.264 Video Onto DVD?

I have a number of videos on H.264 which I want to put onto DVD.
The obvious way is to convert them to AIC or ProRes, put them in an FCP sequence and export to Compressor/DVDSP etc.
Is there any quicker way (however dirty) or any method that saves the need to convert to AIC or ProRes etc.
I am aiming for speed rather than quality!

It strikes me that there are only 2 basic methods:-
    a. If you put H.264 in the FCP timeline it will take ages to render, so that's a non-starter.
    b. Converting it to ProRes or AIC will retain its quality and not take too long to convert.
So b seems to be the better and quickest solution.
I can't think of a quicker way (using my existing equipment/software), so it look as though there probably isn't one.

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
It depends on the format of the file. I agree with Mitch re: the suggestion for QuickTimePro... go here for Apple Tutorials: Creating video for iPod.

QuickTimePro is only $29 and available from the link above.

  • What is the Best wat to put Flash onto DVD?

    Hello
I recently purchase Adobe Production CS3 (PC) and trying to
put Flash animation projects onto DVDs but the video quality is not
    up to par.
I was wondering if anybody has run into this problem, or has
any tips or advice on getting the video quality on DVD.
    rocket12works

Flash can export the whole animation as a quicktime mov, for
that just select the checkbox "Quicktime" on the Publish Settings
Dialog and don't forget to setup the settings needed. Also be aware
of the different Aspect Ratios. Flash uses 1:1par as when a dvd
depending on their Region code and format can vary a lot. Your
flash file needs to have the correct size in order to look right in
    any video editing software.
I personally prefer AVI videos rather then QT but if you're
on a mac then go with the QT format.
The quality of the flash video depends on your par and export
    settings.

I changed my bit rate from the defult to two pass max bit of 6.2 and bit rate of 4 and re-built. Still the exact same result. 612MB to large. I rechanged the bit rate again three seperate time and continue to get the same problem. 612MB to large. Its a SD dvd set at 4:3. It says my total file size is 5.4GB. How can i get this to work guys?
help a very frustrated man out?

  • How do I burn files: txt, audio and video onto a dvd disc?

I know this is way too basic, but everytime I've copied my files onto a blank dvd disc and then click on the burn icon, it gets half way through the burn and then dies and says there was an error and the disc can not be used again. I've tried doing this on 6 dvd discs now and the burn keeps failing! I'm not running any other application. As the discs are 4.7 gb dvd+r's and I am trying to burn 4 gb onto it, it should work...space wise. What am I doing wrong?? My files are too large to burn onto cd's. Thanks!

    Hi djefferson
    Welcome to Discussions.
    There could be several reasons.
Your disks may be coaster class. Check out this page on disk brands and reliability

Also try using just DVD-R disk media.

  • How do I create a shared library from iPhoto when the file is too large to burn on DVD?

I  need to remove some photos (70 GB) to relieve a full hard drive.  I have exported and burned .jpg images on DVDs, but that is only useful as a worst case backup.  What I would like to have is a separate iPhoto Library for each calendar year of photos, so I could still view them in the albums and folders I have created to organize them.  I have done this before in an earlier version of iPhoto, and was able to create 2003 iPhoto Library, 2004 iPhoto Library, etc.  I put a copy on DVD (the full year fit on 1 DVD) and another copy on an external drive.
I am having problems doing this with iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2).  The iPhoto library for each year is too large to burn on DVD.  When I select certain albums from the year that will fit on DVD and use the Share>Burn commands, it creates a library with Events and Faces, but none of the albums are listed on the left.  The albums are important to organize the photos for viewing (birthdays, vacations, holidays, etc.)  I didn't always pay attention to labeling Events when I imported photos, so that is not an adequate alternative to my albums.
I was thinking that if I could create a library for the entire year, it might include my albums and folders. I would have space for this on my external hard drive.  However, I can find no way to create a library for the entire year and put it on my external drive - the only option is to burn a DVD or export .jpg images.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best suggestion: Buy some external USB or Firewire drives. Move your Library to one, back it up to another. A lot more reliable than DVD, a lot less work and much more convenient. For a start, you don't have to break up the library...

How do I put a DVD in and transfer it as one file to my external?

What you are referring to is called "ripping".  You can use something like HandBrake which is free to do this.  HandBrake will not allow you to do this with commercial / encrypted content (e.g. most movies which you might purchase on DVD).

Try "google" for iPod DVD converter software. I use "Handbrake" which seems to be one of the main converters for Macs, but I'm not sure if there are others.

So it sounds like you are trying to burn a DVD with photos on it so the photos can be either transferred to or displayed on a Windows PC, is that correct?
For the purposes of this I am going to assume you are using iPhoto '11.
Gather the photos you want to burn to DVD in one album in iPhoto. This is not absolutely necessary but it sure makes things easier for me.
Select that album, then go to the File menu and select Export...
In the dialog that shows up, select the File Export tab. Select the setting you want to use for export. Click the Export button.
Another dialog will show up. Set the location to Desktop and click the New Folder button. Name the folder something nice and descriptive and click the Create button.
Click the OK button. Quit iPhoto as the rest of this work will be done in the Finder.
You will now have a folder on your desktop with that nice descriptive name. Find it and select it. Go to the File menu and from it select Burn "Descriptive folder name" to Disc...
Insert a blank DVD when prompted.
Let the finder complete the work and eject the disc afterwards.
    That's it. Best of luck.
