FileVault did not open home folder-- Can't login

Okay, so just today I upgraded to Leopard, after the CD finished downlaoding, I logged into my account, and the Updater wanted me to update to 10.5.1, so I did. Updater asked me to restart, and after clicking the restart button, FileVault (I have it enabled) asked me if I wanted to recover disk space (it does this all the time) I skipped the process, and my computer restarted. It brought me to the login screen, and I clicked on my account, entered my password, and then a window pops up, telling me:
"Your FileVault-protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired.
Click OK to repair the folder and continue logging in.
Click Cancel Login to log in as a different user."
I chose okay, then waited a few hours to see if anything would happen. It didn't. This account is the only adminastrator account on this computer...
Anyone know what to do??

Understand that what has happened is that your FileVaulted volume, which is simply a large, glorified encrypted sparsefile, has become corrupt and requires repair. The problem is getting access to it and performing the repair. Please understand that the following fix worked for me and may not work for you.
First, chances are you have only one user on your computer. Even if you have two, we should start fresh with a new admin user. The following steps will reset your Mac to think that is has just received a brand new setup of OSX:
1. Reboot
2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
* mount -uw /
* rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
* shutdown -h now
Now, booting up your computer, enjoy the pretty light show, take a large breath, hold it for 10 seconds, then let it go. Grab a cup of coffee or a loved one and cuddle during this inspiring intro. Now, back to business. Setup your account as you would in any other circumstance. Just make sure you dont name your username the same as the one you used on this computer before. Make sure your password is longer than 8 characters as well (or so I have heard).
Now that you are inside your computer, you see that you still do not have access to your data. Lets take out the crowbar and proceed with the following steps:
4. Go to Macintosh HD/Users/ and locate the folder named the PREVIOUS administrator's account name which you cannot access. Click on the folder and go to FILE | GET INFO and under Sharing and Permissions ADD yourself as a user with Read & Write privileges.
5. Go inside this folder and perform the same command on the Username.sparseimage file as in step 4. Note the path of this file (i.e. /Users/UserName/UserName.sparseimage)
6. Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal
7. Type: sudo hdiutil attach /Users/username/username.sparseimage -nomount
8. A bunch of funky things will happen, but it eventually should list a number of volumes, one with an HFS attached to it, note if it says disk1s1 or disk2s2 or whatever.
9. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -f /dev/rdisk2s2 (rdisk2s2 being where the HFS was from step 8, adding an "r" at the front)
If fsck_hfs bails because of too many errors, just repeat until it says the FS is fine. That irks the bejeezus out of me as well, but has always worked for me so far.
10. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -frd /dev/rdiskXsY
This will rebuild the catalog file, which was my problem.
Now, finally, go back to that path where you found your sparsimage file, double-click it, enter your password and you just may be able to read the data! Success!!!
If you are smart, like I am at this very second, back up the data immediately to DVD. Once you have your backups, reinstall everything and just drop your data back in. Make it clean!
Remember, FileVault is a bitchen feature! But if you are ignorant enough, like I was, not to back up your data, whose fault is that? Cheers!

  • Filevault "did not open and needs repair" upon Login

When attempting to login my second time after installing Leopard onto my Macbook, a warning appears saying that "Your FileVault-Protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired. Click ok to repair the folder and continue logging in. Click cancel to log in as a different user."
Naturally, I clicked OK in hopes that it would just log me in as normal.
However, when i clicked OK it says "You are unable to log in to the user account 'elizabethsherman' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I've tried restarting multiple times, but nothing is working.
My login picture has also magically changed. I don't think that correlates with the problem..
Has anyone ran into this problem or know what i should try to do??
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Liz Sherman

Check out http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25695 I couldn't find a comparable Leopard document.

  • "Fire-vault protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired."

I recently updated my macbook to leopard and after my laptop downloaded system updates, it had to restart but when I came to the login section and tried to login, I get this message:
"Fire-vault protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired. Click OK to repair the folder and continue logging in. Click Cancel login to log in as a different user."
I don't have a different user so I clicked OK, but then I get this message:
"You are unable to log in to the user account "Kyle" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occured."
So now I can't login and I'm a college student and need important files on my computer. Someone please help! I have class tomorrow!

Sorry, I re-read your question and realize from the title you had file vault on upgraded and now it won't let you into the home folder. This is a known issue and I hope Apple produce a fix. I encountered this problem but fortunately I took a bootable image backup to a firewire drive. I booted off that as root and then opened the sparese image which is the home folder. This gave warnings but let me copy important documents to safety and also export address book and safari book marks.
If you do not have a backup I am very sorry to say you may have lost those files. It is worth backing up important college work, even if it is just to CD. I hope Apple come up with a fix for this because many of us hit this problem. Part of the reason for owning a Mac is you do not expect to have these issues. It made me feel like I had just installed XP!

  • [solved] Gnome-do can't open home folder

I've been using gnome-do for a while now and like it, but I can't get it to open my home folder.  This is with the docky theme.  If I try to use it to open my home folder.
What I mean is type super-space to bring up the text input box and then type "home", if I run the action to open home folder it brings up the busy cursor icon but then never opens the home folder.
I can work around this by enabling the files and folders plugin and then typing my username, but I would rather have the home folder thing work.
Anyone else using gnome-do on Arch have this problem or any idea why I'm having this problem?

Well apparently this is a known issue that the gnome-do devs are not too interested in fixing https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136
Edit: Actually looks like it was a nautilus bug, there is a workaround in the bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136/comments/48, you only need to make the following change: in /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop, change "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop" to "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop ."  - Just add a space and a period.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • After latest os X update February 2012, the Finder can not open a folder anymore and asks to restore the windows or not

After installing the latest update - automatic updates and after rebooting without any error, the finder application can not open any folder or device anymore.
Seems the appication crashes after which the following pop-up appears :
    Anybody any idea ?

    I would do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, contribute cs4 did not open

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I found that Contribute CS4 did not open.  In searching for an answer I found the following on the Adobe forum:
"Earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop (CS3 and CS4) software were also tested with Mountain Lion and there are currently no known issues."
So continuing to search, two days of frustration ensued as I "chatted" with 2 unhelpful Adobe customer support reps, searched unhelpful Apple and Adobe websites and posted my question in various places.  Finally I found that the above statement was completely wrong when I received the following from an Adobe staffer:
Mountain LION is not a supported platform for Adobe Contribute CS4. The supported versions are Latest Adobe Contribute 6.5 and Adobe Contribute CS5.X.
And now I have to spend hundreds in order to maintain my website after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  I don't even know to whom I should take my complaint, Apple or Adobe.  Does this mean I have to research every piece of software I use before upgrading my Mac?  At the very least, Mac owners should be forwarned of platform support failures for major 3rd party producers. I'm doing my bit here.   How about you taking some responsibility?

I just baught a new imac from the apple store and loaded mountain lion when I got home due to the time it would take there.  I then used migration assitant to load CS4 from my mac pro that is using snow lepord.  This worked flawlessly. CS4 and Bridge work great.  I then downloaded the mountain lion upgrade to my wifes mac pro that was also using snow lepord and once mountain lion was instaled it disabled CS4 compleatly.  I will repost the results tomorrow. I believe that I can reinstall CS4 to her mac pro now that she has mountain lion installed using migration assistant from my mac pro since it worked this way with the new imac.  I hope this works because I want to upgrade my mac pro to mountain lion but can't afford to lose CS4.

If you go into the applications folder, can you open Adobe Elements 13 Organizer, or the editor directly? The editor is well-hidden. It's inside the support files folder in the Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 folder:

    Hi ..
    Better to troubleshoot Yosemite.
Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.   OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
As for Safari, might be a cookies, cache, extensions, or plug-ins issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Cant download new U2 album. |Says purchased on my account but no evidence anywhere and I definitely did not purchase it. Can anyone help with what is going on?

Cannot download new U2 album. Says purchased on my account but no evidence anywhere and I definitely did not purchase it. Can anyone help with what is going on?

It was given free to everyone on tuesday as part of the iPhone 5 event/announcement, so it will show as purchased in the store.
If this is on your iPhone then either turn Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music (under 'show all') 'on' - it should then show in the Music app with a cloud icon against it for downloading.
Or go to the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app, select Music, and it might then show under 'Various' - when downloaded it should correctly be under U2 in Music.
If you are using your computer's iTunes then you should be able to download it into your library by ticking the 'show iTunes in the Cloud purchases' tick box on the Store tab in Edit > Preferences (iTunes > Preferences on a Mac) - it should then show in the Music part of your library with a cloud icon against it for downloading (downloading the booklet for it this way may not work, you may get a 'corrupt file' message when trying to open it).
Or go to the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage and you should be able to download it from there.
A third option on a computer is to sign out of your account (Store > Sign Out menu option), find the album in the store and then click on its free 'price' button - you should then be prompted to sign back in and the album should download.
