FileVault over 10 hours?

Hi all,
New (early 2008) 2.5GHz MBP, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, running 10.5.6. Used Migration Assistant to move everything from my old 867MHz TiBook, 100GB HD, running 10.4.11 and FileVault.
Everything went fine, did all the updates, permissions, etc (repair permissions takes about 5x longer on this setup), used for awhile and everything worked fine. Then noticed the HD free space wasn't correct (see below), so decided to do some house cleaning. Got rid of System Folder and OS9 Applications folder. Put MBP to sleep. Before sleep, window came up saying something to the effect of "some files taking up too much space, do you want FileVault to recover disk space?" This has been normal whenever I added/deleted much data in Tiger, so no worries. That was over 10 hours ago. FileVault is still "Recovering disk space in tk's home folder."
So basically, two questions. I know when I turned FV on in Tiger it took several hours (5 if I remember correctly) to encrypt. Is 10 hours in the realm of probability given the roughly 2 GB of data I deleted, or is something amiss?
I've never cancelled a FV encryption session. If canceling even works, are there residual issues? I'm trying to imagine what state data is left in if the encryption process is interrupted, but no ideas.
Don't know if this is related, and will start a new topic in need be, but also noticed that when I was in my Documents folder or home folder, it showed only 55GB free space available, while if I opened other folders, like Applications, it should what I should have available, about 155GB. Any thoughts?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

something is amiss. recovering free space should not take that much time.

I don't know but you probably don't have any choice. FV seems to be stuck and waiting further will get you nowhere.

that's normal given that you migrated from a smaller drive. Maximum size of the filevault sparse image is set at the creation to the total hard drive size. it doesn't change when you copy it to a different computer.
In general, Apple recommends turning off filevault before using migration assistant. leopard uses a different technology from Tiger to store filevaulted home directories. It uses sparse bundles instead of regular sparse images.
I would recommend aborting the procedure. then see what's going on. if you can still log in, I suggest you create a new user and migrate your data by hand from the old user to the new one. then delete the old user. use this post for details on what to copy
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507
an alternative would be to turn off FV on the ibook and redo the migration.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • 10.5.2 - is TM now backing up Filevault files hourly?

I have a Parallels virtual disk and I want to use Time machine and Filevault.
Previously TM would only back up the contents of my Filevaulted home directory when I logged out. So, it seemed like a great solution to put the Parallels disk in my home directory where it would only get backed up when I logged out....as opposed to every hour doing 16GB.
With 10.5.2 it does back up the 16GB every hour even though it is in my home directory with Filevault. Is this a new "feature" that they quietly slipped in?
    Pity if so.

I'm having the same problem installing the Leopard Graphics Update on my Dual 2.5 G5. Installing 10.5.2 went fine, but afterwards the graphics update would fail to install, with the same error message you got. I tried both Software Update and downloading the standalone installer.
But wait, there's more! I also can no longer repair permissions using Disk Utility. I get the following message: "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Booting from my Leopard install CD does allow me to fix permissions.
Lastly, my second internal hard drive is now also behaving oddly, Any time I try to drag a file to the Trash, I get a dialog box telling me: "The item "(file name)" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?"
I've run DiskWarrior from the CD and tried fsck in Single User mode (no errors found). Nothing seems to help
I had no problem updating to 10.5.2 on my MacBook, but the update to my desktop has been a real booger. Anyone who can offer any input, I'd sure appreciate it.

  • Broadcast Wav files from PT to Logic not moving to original record position

Okay, my system needs upgrading but I'm stable (at least I think I am til now!) I have a TV network sending me broadcast wav files from PT. They shoot their video on a 24 hour clock. I'm to be editing and mixing (in Logic) their audio tracks from PT and send them back as broadcast wav files for them to sync back to their video. After years and years of recording and producing music, this TV world is a first for me. 2 issues at hand that are causing trouble.
NUMBER 1: The wav files will not snap to original record position. I keep getting an error message about "out of range" and of all craziness with a negative SMPTE number. ??? The prompt suggests an offset error. But there isn't I can find. Start time is set to 0:0:0.0.0 here and at the TV studio. They film at 29.97d. That matches as well. Sample Rate is correct at 48k 24bit. I've uncovered every thing I can think of. I did have to set the tempo down to 5 BPM in order to see a full 24 hours in SMPTE.
NUMBER 2: I can't figure out how to see the timestamp start time of the audio files in the audio window. I have every option turned on in the VIEW option, I can see length, but I see nothing about start time of original record time. Am I missing something simple here? Seems like a very standard option that should be easily accessible. It would allow me to prepare the location on the time line.
Overall, I'm hoping I can do all the above with my current rig but realize that the clock is ticking toward a whole new system with Logic 9.
Help please. Don't want to lose this client.

Sure do appreciate everyone's willingness to help. Setting SMPTE start to 24:00:00.0.0 didn't work either. I confirmed with the studio manager at the TV station also that they run a 24hour clock with 0 being midnight.
I'm really hoping that the error is on their end.
*It would help me if anyone knew how to VIEW the Timestamp info attached to the wav files. That would at least give me an approximate idea of where they should be.*
I'm supposed to be editing and mixing the voice dialog from numerous different scene takes that were shot throughout a day of filming. It's critical that I can see all these different takes that were captured over hours of open recording. Some of the files are almost 4 hours long. It's a big project and I'm sure hoping I can stay inside Logic to get it all done with excellence.

  • Won't sell item at Store # 145 Heath Ohio. Said too busy to call Corporate

On 12/13/14 around 7:30pm went to Best Buy Store # 145 Heath, Ohio. After looking to see what Amiibo's they had. I see they had one Diddy Kong on a hang tag(later confirmed it was actual Diddy Kong with SKU and price of 12.99 hang tag location). I went to check out and once the cashier scanned it for purchase a message on the register said can't be sold. She tried again and same thing. She called someone from gaming and he went to confirm where in store came from and then came back and said shouldn't be a problem. He tried scanning it himself and same thing. He went over to customer service and looked it up. He came back and said didn't see a reason can't be sold. He said will talk with the store manager and be right back. He came back and said the manager said can't be sold. He asked if still wanted it, I could talk with the manager myself. I said yes still want to purchase it. He went over the mic around his neck and said the customer wants to speak with the manager.
Then a guy came to the front. He said was the manager (Jeramaha, sorry on spelling), he said as said before can't be sold. I asked why not, he first said was recalled and needs to be sent back. After asking why on shelf then, then said might not be entered in system correctly or something of that order and will need to be checked on with Corporate. He said for me to check back tomorrow. I told him over a hour drive away so just can't stop in to see why tomorrow. I said would you call Corporate now then. He said we are too busy to do that. I said what do you mean too busy. He repeated too busy but would put my name on it and hold it for me to pick it up tomorrow, so did that and he  attached my info to it. I said again hour away. He said it would be here for me then. I asked for his business card, he asked why. I said will need to contact Corporate then myself. He said why, can't sell something that can't be sold. I said, it's now not that. It's all the different reasons and not willing to check. He then said can get a store card on my way out at the desk at entrance
I went to that desk(it's the security check desk). I asked a guy that was there for the card, he handed me a store card and asked why wanted it. I said the manager over there didn't have one. He said no I'm the manager and asked what's wrong. I told him trying to buy a item and they said can't sell it. He said let's go see why not. He went and got the item and then took me over to customer service. He went and looked on the computer and said can't be sold until 12/17 because it's not released yet. I asked why on shelf, said put out by mistake. I asked him why that guy told me to come back tomorrow to buy it, even knew over hour drive. He said don't know why he would do that, since can't be sold. I pointed to my info tag he put on it. He didn't say anything on that. I said that would be a wasted trip, he said good thing didn't do it. He proceeded to tell me can't be sold until then and didn't offer to hold it. I was dissappointed with that and then took my info tag back and left.
Now wanted to add as too why posting on here:
The first guy that represented himself as the manager had a Geek Squad shirt on and seem to just make up different reasons as to why not. That's why asked for him to check with Corporate.
The response of too busy to call Corporate. To show how not busy that store was. There was two registers open and not once did they have me step away or take another customer. That's because all of that time with them checking on it, they didn't have any customers to ring out. The other lady at the next register wasn't even busy that she added that someone earlier came up with one and it wouldn't ring up. Even if too busy which wasn't the case, I feel should still do it for customer service.
Then to tell the customer that recalled and will be sent back. Then a couple minutes later offer to take my info and hold it for me to pick up the next day. That makes no sense and made me feel, just making up as they go.
Also to represent as the manager and wasn't, doesn't help. I don't even know if the other one was either, since he had a coat on.
If something was put out by mistake that's fine. But to tell a cutomer will hold it and come back the next day to buy it and knowing they have over hour drive without knowing for sure could even be sold then. That's just wrong.
Now as to the availability of this Diddy Kong Amiibo. Went to Gamestop right around the corner(right after leaving Best Buy 12/13) to check if they had it. They did, but sold the two that they had. The manager there named Ash said they are available to be sold and just hard to find, since so few sent to stores.

    Hello VanMan1987,
Admittedly, the release dates and the coordination around Nintendo amiibo figures has been a bit of a challenge, to say the least. With release dates changing and there being so many different figures, it’s clear to me that some of our stores may have not been in a position to be able to speak confidently on what was going on with them, including putting figures out that aren’t yet able to be sold. What’s more clear to me is that your issue isn’t so much with the amiibo figures themselves, but how this whole situation was handled by the associates at the store. I sincerely apologize for the frustration you’ve endured here and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your experience in such great detail.
We’ve received quite a bit of feedback in regards to the amiibo releases and we’ve been sharing this feedback with our gaming teams here at the Corporate Campus. However, I’m going to go one step further here and share your concerns directly with the leadership team at Store #145 in Heath, Ohio. If there was any misrepresentation going on, this is greatly frowned upon and there is absolutely no reason we should be misleading our customers and giving a false illusion of authority. While most of our associates should be able to assist with your issue, there are times a manager is needed and a manager is exactly what you should get when requesting one. I apologize further if you experienced otherwise.
Lastly, I do apologize for the delay in response here. As you acknowledged, we’re a bit behind due to a higher Holiday volume and I regret that this gives the impression that we’re disregarding the situation. I absolutely assure you that’s not the case!
If you still need any assistance here, please feel free to let me know.
    Sincerely,
Brian|Senior Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate

  • Full revision list of the Zen Micro's firmware?

/ I've been digging up various firmwares, and I'll be honest and say that because I use an AC Adaptor that 2.2.02 and ..0 are not in my best interests. While I have no tested whether .02.05 retains charge over time I will probably do so tomorrow. I'd like to know the full history of the device so I know where to stand on this. I like to have the 4 hour standby, but not the 'shorter' charge span simply because all Creative did was drop the peak voltage from 4.9V (Li-Po can take up to 4.235V) to 4.2V. Granted the slope of the charging curve gets very flat at that level, but I do feel that it is best to inform geeks so they know what to expect.
    Version (Recovery Mode version)
    ..0 (0.0.65)
    2.2.02 (0.0.65)
.0.02 (0.0.63) (Pulled off due to complaints)
    .02.05 (0.0.58)
    2.00.2 (Cannot be installed)
I know I missed a few, but because the Zen Micro is past its life cycle I doubt there will be any customizations to the device.

    what problems?
Spending time on a support forum like this, that covers the full gamut of the customer base, you are going to see probably 80% of the posts from folks having problems ranging from minor pilot error to real hardware failure. The 20% with tips, kudos etc are all in the minority and will not be very visible.
Creative has probably sold over 5 million Micro's since inception. There are definitely going to be problems with that many units in the general population. And some of the problems have been real issues such as the battery drain and the issue of headphone jacks. The latest firmware v . has fixed the battery problem, and on the 3 Micros in our household we are all seeing over hours playback time, excellent battery hold time, good charging characteristics etc etc. The headphone jack issue seems to have become a lot less of a topic the past month or so. Noting that Creative sold probably about .5 million of the earliest Micros, and these were the units that seemed to have headphone jacks go bad, if at all, all the later products may have enough of a redesign that the jacks are OK. Certainly we are fine over here with the new revisions.
The pluses of the Micro are many, and the diminuti've size and excellent UI makes using this player a pleasure. Audio quality is excellent, and other than sheer output power is right up there with the JB3 (IMO the best ever mp3 player - irregardless of brand).
Hope this rambling note can help you with your decision.

  • ITunes 10.5 just will not Sync correctly/at all

Over hours and hours and hours I have been failing with this.
First my iPhone with iOS 5 would not sync anything - it says it has, gives no error, but just gives me Ghost images on the iPhone with nothing in them.
Finally got my music synced by disconnecting the iPhone from iTunes, resetting it away from it, so to make it think it was brand new, and the music went in... slowly.
But now it refuses to Sync Photos of Books - just takes a long time (an hour?) trying to do something, then with no error, finishes. Again, ghost photo/folders, but no photos in them, and books still in "ready to sync" stage.
This is with a cable, I haven't got as FAR as trying Wi-Fi yet. Okay, so iOS hasn't bricked my phone, but... close!
Apple, can we get a HUGE fix for this NOW please, otherwise I may as well sink my iPhone into the ground and stick to pen and paper, and the house phone.
Such wonderful dreams... such Epic Fails. Fundamental operations. iMessage works great! But I can't Sync!
Anyone else? I know there are many out there.
    I have done the following:
    - Reset iPhone many times
    - Unistalled all Apple products from my Windows 7 PC many times, and reinstalled afresh from downloaded installer (not the Apple Updater)
    - Deleted iPod Photo Cache folder serveral times
    - Unticked all Sync Options, resynced, and reticked and resynced, many times
    - Hard reset iPhone
    - Yank cable out with force of a million-men's anger, managing not to break it in the process, and shoving it right back in there
    - Screaming at iTunes
    - Yelling at iPhone
    - Smoking Angrily in the night, and day
    - Searching Google for anything that might resemble an answer
    - Reading a book to calm me down
    - Bought more tobacco to calm me down
    - Ranted on email, Twitter and Facebook
    - Asked it nicely
    Please someone... give me Sync!

    please help me guys

  • Battery drain with High CPU (v6.0 Bundle 3049) due to module net.rim.io.impl

    Hi,
I upgraded my Torch (9800) a week ago, and have been noticiing battery drain issues.  The problem is NOT persistent, but is happening most of the times though.  I am currently on OS v6.0 bundle 3049 (v6.0.0.706, platforn 6.6.0.246).  My Wifi and Bluetooth are always OFF.  Only using the Bell network, for which I have all the 5 bars available.
I have investigated further, and I found that the Blackberry System Software was the one running with the highest CPU - usually in the high 70s, to even high 90s.  And this was consistent over hours, until the battery was dead.  I have since removed any apps I suspecpected - such as Nice Office and LinkedIn.  But the problem still persists.
Battery pull has been done multiple times, as well as I have checked, and there are are no OS updates available.
Now, currently, only the basic apps are loaded (Alt-Back) : Home, Messages, BBM, Phone, Borwser.  All other apps are closed or exited.
Investigating further into the modules within the BB System Software, I have found that the net_rim_io_impl, is the one consuming ALL of the CPU.  I am not sure where/what this module does - so I am unclear on what service within the BB I can turn OFF to get rid of the issue.
Please see the following screen shots, the CPU for the System drops a bit, as Options uses up some, else, it goes back to 90s, if left alone :-
And within the BB System Software :-
Please assist and guide, with either a fix to the module, or else, via some workaround, wherein some service can be stopped or some setting can be changed to avoid this battery drain.
    Thanks!

  • Using an external display with a 2006 iMac?

(Scenario in paragraph one, question in paragraph two)
I've got a problem trying to get data off an old iMac, and don't see an obvious solution... I have an old 2006 iMac that's been unused for years, and the display quit working about a year ago. I'm trying to just get the data off that computer, but my current 'main' computer's a MacBook Air that doesn't have an Ethernet port, so direct connection is out. I could try to move a couple hundred GB over wifi, but the wifi in the old iMac is an old wifi standard that takes forever, and tends to error out when transferring data over hours of time (I've tried).
Thus my question: The old iMac has a mini-DVI-out port, but the challenge is how to switch to an external display, when I don't have a display to navigate through settings? Is there a keyboard shortcut, or something? I've looked online, but can't find any solutions. I've got a mini-DVI-to-VGA cable, and a VGA-capable monitor, but when I plug the Mini-DVI into the iMac, to the VGA, nothing happens. I'm guessing I need to go to preferences, and select video-out? But that's impossible (as far as I've tried) with a display to navigate on the iMac.
Some miscellany: Someone suggested Command-F2 for something monitor-switching-related, but that did nothing. Someone at work thought that the signal from the DVI out might not work with the Gateway FPD1760 I'm trying to use as an external display...
    Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

So the various 'F2', 'Command-F7', etc, etc, didn't work. But I did find a simple solution: I used my Fiancé’s MacBook Pro that has an Ethernet port, connected via Command-k, and transferred about 40GB so far. Pretty painless, and I can get dthe data to one of my multiple-TB external drives from her computer. Using her computer hadn't entered my mind...
Disappointing that I couldn't get the video out to work, but at least I'm getting the data off. I'm going to try the 'firewire/Target mode' idea later, when I need to erase the drive, etc.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Itunes shows library different than on Touch

What's showing as on my IPod Touch 5th gen. is different than what's actually on the device and available for me to play.
I know, you won't believe me, but ITunes shows a whole different list of songs than what I see when I browse the device. It's like 2290 items according to iTunes, (good!), compared with 127 songs I can see on the device (bad!). Coincidentally, those 100 or so are all ones I've purchased from Apple.
The truth is that I've had persistent, massive problems with this thing over its life, which I've occasionally railed about here. Long story.
Question is, how do I get these two in sync again? - with all the tracks I've put on it, painstakingly, over hours and days. I suppose this could easily be for the ITouch forum, but I'm arbitrarily posting here because it occurs after hooking the device up to iTunes.
    Thanks for any info.

In an ideal world all of your media content is on your system drive, listed in iTunes and organized in a portable layout. You then have a complete clone of the iTunes folder as a backup. If your system drive is too small to hold everything then putting the entire library on an external drive with a backup on a second drive also works. If you want access to some content on the laptop when travelling without having to take the external then it is possible to split the library up and store some content locally and not others, but that requires more effort to get right.
I'm still not clear what has gone wrong on your system, but some third party tools (e.g. Sony VIAO media manager and some antivirus packages) can interfere with the way the iTunes updates its database files leading to the concessional corruption. iTunes also expects all media content to stay in the same place so any manual manipulation of the media folders can lead to trouble.

  • ITunes & iPod music question?

So I got a new iPod (4th gen if that matters) and I have over 3 thousands songs including over hour long mixes so it takes a LONG time to put all the songs on my ipod. I've been at this for like 3 days nows (putting music on my iPod) and i've just hit a wall. I didn't sync my ipod to put on all the music that I have on it already, i just Shift+A all the music in the library then drag & dropped it on the ipod. But now it stopped working? (fml) So I was looking what was wrong and noticed i wasn't syncing with my iTunes. I'm only a few songs (800+) short of having all my music on my iPod. So I was wondering if I tried syncing with my iTunes will all the music already on there be deleted & the process restarted? I don't want that. ._. takes too long. any other solution?

Ok. Does that script work instantly? I waited a bit and then when I clicked in itunes, Script Editor told me something like "Itunes had an object error".
Then I checked and there are 3110 checked songs in my itunes library and only 2696 on my ipod. Why is this?

  • IPod Device Internal assert error

This is the 2nd iPod I can't get to work. I am using an XP machine. I am getting an error during the install. In the dialogue box that say "Your iPod has been connected. Please wait while the system recognizes the device." The progress bar just keeps running and running under the heading "Waiting for iPod...". The error dialogue box has in its Title Bar "iPodDeviceInternal assert". The message in the body says "assertion b failed at .\iPodDeviceCommon.cpp line 166". I thought USB might be suspect so I took back the first iPod 30GB photo and got a another one and a firewire cable. Still the same problem. Google search found a log file on my system C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\8\Intel 32\formatter_log.txt . A line close to the bottom of the log says "[0xC7C, 12870578] assertion b failed at .\iPodDeviceCommon.cpp line 166" I have let the "Waiting for iPod" run for over hour to no avail. After clicking on OK to the error message another dialogue box with InstallShield in the Title Bar pops up with the message "1628: Failed to complete installation". I can't get passed this road block. I used Windows to format the first iPod and that killed it for good. Anyone have any answers?

I had the exact same issue. To not cross post (sorry, as I am new here, and do not know all the "rules" to posting here, but assume this is the case...), see my comments here -
elliott, "First iPod. Can't get it running on XP." #6, 08:42am Aug 25, 2005 CDT
Basically, I was able to do the same, but my desktop has all the music stored on it, and I would rather not have to worry about going through my laptop to get to the music on my desktop. The laptop is also only USB 1.1, so the first transfer took more than all night to my 60GB iPod. USB 2.0 turned out to be my problem, and the purchase/connection of a firewire cable to my desktop solved the problem!

  • Lenovo G500s does not charge!

    Hey folks,
im sorry, im probably in the wrong theard!
I have a problem with my new! Lenovo G500s.
When i have my charger on my notebook it doesn't charge. There is standing:"Network operating will not be charge".
The realy bad thing is, that wehn i didn't have my cable on my Notebook it lives not longer than about 15 minutes. After these 15 minutes my screen is black and i can not start my Notebook. I have to charge again, and wait over hours to start my notebook again.
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you!
    Felix
ps. Sorry for my bad englisch. I hope you understand what i mean.

    hi Felix,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to verify, when you turn off the computer and plugin the charger, can you observe the battery light indicators and see if you're able to charge the battery.

On the other hand, 15mins battery life is very low. If you have a 100% charged battery and it only last 15mins I would recommend calling Lenovo support as there's most likely a problem with the battery.
    Regards
