Filtering background noise using two microphones

Hi,
I am new to Labview so please bear with me. I am trying to work out the sound vibration level emitted from a compressor. I have a microphone placed next to it but it is operating in a noisy laboratory and therefore I need to filter out the background noise.
I have another microphone to record the background noise. I think I might need to use an adaptive noise cancellation filter but cannot figure out how to make one on Labview. I have tried simply inputting the two signals and subtracting them but get an error saying "Resource requested by this task has already been reserved by a different task" when trying to run it.
Basically I am looking for the simplest way to get rid of the background noise in real time or in processing the signals afterwards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please ask if you need more information.
Thanks a lot,
Sam

An ax (also spelled axe) is a tool for chopping down trees.  I was trying to make a joke.  Like some other experienced LabVIEW programmers, I do not like the Dynamic Data Type because it hides the structure of the data contained within it.
The subtraction technique is standard and simple.  The biggest issue is phase shift.  Suppose the two microphones are 1 meter apart. A sound arriving on the line through the microphones will arrive 3 milliseconds later at one than at the other. Sound arriving along a line at right angles to the line through the microphones and equidistant from both will arrive at the same time at each.  At other angles the time will vary between those values. Compensating for that delay or phase shift is necessary to get good cancellation.
In addition the amplitude of the signals at each microphone will vary inversely as the square of the distance between the source and the microphone. For sources much closer to one microphone the amplitude difference can be significant.
Directional microphones will further complicate the amplitude variations.  I think that two microphones are not enough to provide unambiguous determination of the direction of an unknown source, especially when there are multiple sources.

  • Trying to find the reflection coefficient using two microphone method, why can't I output the data in units of frequency?

Using LABView to collect data over an experimental setup for measuring sound absorption using the two microphone method. The program cross correlates two mic inputs and then I use a fourier transform to split the complex result into real and imaginary parts. I cant seem to output into the right units or even the right format. Any help would be great, the VI is attached. Thanks.

If you have the Report Generation Toolkit then you can easily use the VIs included with it to write to an Excel file.  Check out this example.
Alternately, you can use the Write To Spreadsheet File VI to create a tab delimited or comma separated spreadsheet file which can be opened by Excel.  Check out this example.
There are many more examples available in the NI Developers Community that you might find useful as well.

  • How to reduce background noise using garageband?

I have a video file that contains quite a bit of background noise (just basic camera noise mostly) and I was wondering how to reduce or remove that using Garageband. I have read in other discussions that I could use the graphic equalizer, but I don't know what that is or how to use it. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could get rid of this background noise?

I'd suggest looping a piece of silence in your sound in Garageband (using the c key to turn cycling on) and listening to just the background noise. Then open a 31-band EQ as an effect on the track and start pulling down frequencies. If it is mainly hissing and rumble, you might be able to eliminate much of it using EQ.
Another solution is to open the Visual EQ and check the analyze box, and then loop/cycle play back your track so it loops just the silence with noise. This will allow you to see in the Visual EQ window what frequencies make up your background noise. Then I'd suggest using a 31-band EQ and gently start pulling down the frequencies that are dominant in your noise. Go carefully and listen as you do it, you might be affecting they sound that you want.
To avoid making the audio you want sound thin and hollow, think about these aspects:
For male voices, most of the wanted sound is between 125 Hz and 8 KHz
For female voices: between 300 Hz and 12 KHz
So basically drag the faders on the EQ on the frequencies outside this range. I'd suggest a 45 to 60 degree slope down on the EQ, so it's not a harsh transition.
It does depend on your source audio. Is it music? Speech? I use the above as a guide You have to experiment and listen as you go. It helps to turn the EQ on and off during playback to hear the before and after your adjustments too...
    This is great, oz.
But do you have a video showing how it is done ?
My source are vocal singing ...

  • Eliminating Background Noise using Labview

    Hello,
I have built a VI that is used to measure voltage from an amplifier connected to a photomultiplier tube.  The PMT reads a fluorescent light signal and sends it to the amplifier, which converts current to voltage.  I get a pretty decent signal reading, but I want to cut down the background noise that shows up.  For some reason, the background noise starts around 1.5V and randomly oscillates between 1.42 volts and 1.54V.  I am trying to find a way to cut down the noise so my readings are a little more clean.  I have attached my VI and a picture of the resulting graphs I get from a typical data run.  The left graph shows background noise in a 4second interval, and the right graph shows the complete run.
Any help, suggestions or comments is very much appreciated.  Thank you!

Looks pretty clean to me.  Just curious, why do you need it to look cleaner than that?

  • I want to connect two microphones trough an AudioLink III hardware in Adobe Connect

    Hi everybody,
I´m trying to connect an AudioLink III hardware in a Mac OS to use two microphones in the same meeting in Adobe Connect. But, I don´t know why, just it´s working one channel, not both. In another hand, using another sound hardware it works, but it didm´t work with the AudioLink III sound hardware.  Any idea?
I have to say that in system preferences in the Mountain Lion Mac OS, the two channels from the AudioLink III is working property. The problem comes in my Adobe Connect meeting.
I hope anybody can help us.
Sorry for my grammar. Greetings from Spain.

    Hi Sameer,
Yeah, I select the correct Audio input device, in this case, USB Audio. The program recognize the hardware, but just one of the two channels, that´s the problem. I tried under Windows SO too, but with the same results. I suppose that´s a problem with this hardware.
Thanks for your answer and your time.

  • Background noise from microphones

Using an iMac G3 with CRT and OS 10.3.9 we are trying to use Skype and getting an overwhelming amount of background noise with and without an external microphone. A connection is made but there is a loud humming sound and our voices are barely audible. Could this be a problem with our high speed sbc connection and phone line filtering? Any ideas are welcome at this point.
    Thanks,
    B.Ball

You did not mention if you have tray load or slot load iMac. (This refers to the method for loading CDs.) Earlier tray load iMacs have a fan, slot loaders do not. The fan on my tray load Blueberry can be quite loud in my quiet office (although no louder than any other computer fan), and so I am wondering if that might be the source of the background noise.

  • Bought AKG 120 USB microphone - Picks up to much background noise

How can I reduce the hum? I bought the AKG 120 USB microphone for voiceover. I used a Seinnheiser ew100 G3 before - which worked okay. But I guess a condenser microphone is even more powerful and picks up more of what I did not want. When I compare the recordings the Seinnheiser is deeper and the AKG 120 picks up more hum and background noise.
Is there a software that can help me adjust the AKG 120? Right now it is picking up to much noise.

    Hi Lillian83,
Final Cut Pro X has the ability to analyze audio for hum during import and while editing.
The relevant sections of the manual below will show you how:

    anyway to fix this problem

Every time I try to talk to my wife when using the Iphone 5 with Earpods, or any other headset for that matter, she complains that the mic on my phone headset is picking up EVERY SINGLE SOUND and amplifying it so loud that she can hardly hear my voice over all the background noise.... I have replecated this problem now 10 different iphone5 of my friends.... which is every single iphone 5. Without fail they all have this same issue. It is not my wifes phone either. People always complain when I am using my headset. ESPECIALLY when I am trying to comply with new laws requireing hands free phone usage. It is unacceptable for Apple to have failed in fixing this problem. I have spoken with several customer service reps/Genius's about this and there is no fix to date. I have upgraded my iphone5 to all latest versions of iOS with the hopes that Apple will one day fix this problem with a software update. Will someone please help us!!!!! I doubt my Apple loyalty will last without a fix to this massive inconvienence.

  • Loud background noise when using headphones with mic. iPhone 5

I usually use headphones with a microphone to make phone calls, and they used to work perfectly.  As soon as I got the iPhone5, I have had trouble.  The person I'm talking to can hear every tiny background noise louder than my voice.  In fact, they complain that it sounds like glass breaking or the ocean or loud rain.  Today, someone about 20 feet away pulled up the window blinds and my caller said it hurt her ears.
I've tried a couple different sets of headphones and have the same problem.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes I have the same problem. I have tried 3 different sets of headphones and have had my iPhone replaced. The problem persisits. I am a Version customer in central Wisconsin.
The headphones are unuseable while making a phone call in a atmosphere where there is any background noise.
I have been on the phone for hours with Apple. Problem persists.

  • We use an iphone5 to broadcast basketball games on the radio and have started getting background noise that drowns out the broadcast

We use an iphone5 along with a Conex FlipJack to broadcast high school basketball games. It worked fine last year. This year, we are picking up more background noise than play by play.

Yes, if I plug the electric piano into the Mac and listen to it through headphones coming out of the Mac, I get the radio sound (as well as a buzzing sound).
However, when I plug the electric piano directly into the speaker stereo system, bypassing the Mac entirely, I get only a small amount of interference/buzz. This makes me wonder if the Mac is, at the very least, dramatically amplifying the interference. (Again, when I formerly used the PC, there was a tiny bit of interference on rare occasions, but it was so faint that 99% of the time I did not even know it existed.)
I've also retried every possible combination in the old PC, just to make sure I wasn't fooling myself before, and at the moment I cannot pick up any radio interference there whatsoever, no matter how hard I try.

  • Trying to use Two Speakers IN Two Jacks on an X-Fi. Microphone Question As We

I just bought the X-Fi Fatalty Champion Series card, with the front dri've. Love the sound quality and the novelty of the front control set-up, but having a few major problems.
. I can't seem to connect my two powered speakers to two different jacks correctly.
I have two powered monitor speakers. Both have /4" outputs, so I'm using two /4" to /8" cables so they'll work with my card. However, I can't get them to work correctly in two separate jacks. They do produce sound, but not at the same levels, or as "Right Speaker and Left Speaker"
    Example.
    Left Speaker into Line Out
Right Speaker into Line Out 2
I can't get them to function as a stereo (Left Right) pair (which is very important to me). Yes, they both make sound, but the Left Speaker is extremely dominant. About 75% more dominant in fact.
How can I plug both my speakers to the card to get what I'm looking for.
    2. I can't get the microphone jack (front or back) to record, or work correctly.
I can plug a mic in, and hear it in my own speakers (or headphones. I've tried both), however recording in Windows sound recorder, or using voice chats like Teamspeak... nothing. I can hear myself, but others can't. What do I need to do in order to use a microphone correctly with the sound card? What are the exact settings from Windows Start Menu to finish that I need to follow (if any)?
I'm very frustrated, and have given myself a few gray hairs over these matters today. I played around with settings and combinations for close to 2 hours today.
If anyone can help me, I'd be thrilled.
    Thanks in advance
    -Z

You are not supposed to connect a pair of speakers(as in left and right in a stereo pair)to two separate out jacks on the sound card.the place on the card where headphones/speakers with the mini jack goes is the right place.

  • Noisy background noise when using speaker phone during calls

    Hi

Does anyone have the same issue as me when you use the speaker phone during calls?
There is a lot of background noise. The caller's voice also sounds echoish
When I turn off the speaker and switch back to normal call it noise disappeared, the the caller's voice is clear.

See if speaker voice enhancement is enabled.

I'm using movie program how do get rid of background noise and put music over top of video

    Niel,
Thanks for your suggestion about using RCDefaultApp. I am hesitating to do this because it seems like I'd be installing still another piece of software to fix the original mistake---downloading Reader.
About 20 years ago I maintained---with considerable handholding---UNIX systems of various sorts. Can you suggest how I might find the plist that seems to require changing?
BTW, Preview is called whenever I open some random .pdf file. The problem appears when I want to get a file from the web. If the site permits a "download" I can get the file, but if I want to "view and print" the file, the evil dark-grey Adobe screen appears with the whirling black ball. Then Safari quits. I'm wondering if the reference to Reader is in a "cookie" sent from the website, when I first was installing Reader. Is this possible?
