Final Cut 7 stuttering playing prores 422 LT

Specs:
Mac Pro early 2008
Dual quad core 2.8
8GB RAM
Lion 10.7.5
Now that that's out of the way...
This is really frustrating.  I have a project that's about 1TB in total, all in prores 422 (LT).  From the time I launch FCP, I have about 5 or 10 minutes, give or take, before every clip starts skipping and stuttering to the point of unusability.  I've checked everything I can think of.  I'm not taxing my RAM, CPU, or HD.  My scratch drive is a 2TB internal drive dedicated to scratch, so there's nothing else using it.  I've tried shutting off everything else on my system but that doesn't help either.  The only way I've been able to fix it is to restart FCP, but then it all just happens again.  I've tried copying clips to other HDs when it starts happening, but I get the same result regardless.  When it's working, I'm able to play a 2 angle multiclip perfectly, with the HD transferring at about 45 MB/s.  Single clips usually are about 23 MB/s, but when it starts stuttering, Activity Monitor says it barely is able to go above 15.
Any ideas?  This is driving me nuts.

I don't know the make of the camera at the moment, I'll find out today and update that later.  Here's a picture of my sequence settings:
I finished cutting this piece in Premiere (with no issues whatsoever) and exported an XML so I can prepare an FCP sequence to deliver.  The SECOND I imported the XML back into FCP, it was stuttering all over the place as bad as it ever has.
I have no idea what to think here.  I can play higher bit rate video in FCP without issues, but this particular format/codec is just a nightmare.  I think I can also rule out the camera because I tried taking other video from another project and transcoding it to match these settings and it gave me the same issues.

If you can view a ProRes 4-2-2 video at all, then you either have the independent ProRes422 Playback component installed or the FCP "Pro" video components installed.

Check your "~/Library/QuickTime" folder for your various "Pro" components. If in doubt that you have them all, re-run the FCP installer and it should add any missing components, apps, or utilities.

Does Final Cut Express support ProRes 1080p?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
ProRes codecs was introduced with Final Cut Studio 2.
You can't create a ProRes sequence in FCE, but if you've installed the +Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Mac+ you will be able to import ProRes footage, but rendering or conversion will be needed.

  • Final Cut Pro X & ProRes Major but Funny BUG

This must be the weirdest BUG I have ever experienced... And the most difficult to find. I found it via coincidence ;-)
I playback and use ProRes 4444 inside of FCPx. And generally there is NO problem doing so. Until yesterday...
In After Effects I converted a bunch of H.264 Canon 5DMKii movies, after denoising them, to ProRes4444.
I imported the movies into Final Cut X and immediately noticed that they were jerky in playback. So I loaded the original files and wanted to see whether they were jerky as well. They were not... Here comes the funny part...
The Original H.264 had AUDIO on them the ProRes version I had stripped the audio from as I did not need it. To better compare the two files (Don't know why I did it but I did) in the timeline I just copied the audio from H.264 file over underneath the ProRes4444-jerky file. Then I compared again. This time the ProRes was playing smooth as silk. I could NOT believe my eyes. I was cursing at the Mac but after smoking a cigarette and contemplating, I went back an deleted the audio from underneath the Prores 4444 file. Back to jerky. I put the audio back - jerkiness GONE...
So I did some more testing...
I took a completely different clip and imported that into After Effects.
I did the same denoising to it and exported TWO versions to PRORES 4444.
1 with Audio and 1 without it...
Then imported the two into FCPx...
We are talking TWO identical files here expect one has audio to it.
The one with audio played back silky while the one without was jerky.
I copied the audio (any audio will do) underneath the jerky one and it stopped jerking around.
I opened the two test files in QuickTime 7 and 10 and NONE of them were Jerky... This issue seems to pertain to FCPx only....
So if any of you export from AE to ProRes4444 and the guy on the FCPx station gets agitated because of the jerkiness,
before you blame adobe (like I did) tell him to just copy some sound underneath the sound-less video clip. That will take care of the problem,
untill Apple fixes the problem ;-)

Glad you found a solution, AtonMusic! Did you bring the issue up to Apple?

  • Final Cut 7 - HD / ProRes Options

    Hello Forum
I have a new documentary project. Like the last one it will be 98% moving photos (between 2000x2000 to 6000x6000 pixels at 72dpi) with a narration, most of which are animated in AfterEffects and then moved over into FCP. There will be a few seconds of HD and DV video footage although I am not sure of its format / camera. The whole program is about 30 minutes.
I invested in final cut studio 3 and now have an insane array of ProRes and HD options available. This is great but also a bit intimidating. Not sure where to start and what to pick.
I will be delivering a quicktime file to be played back on an ~60inch plasma screen (HD 1920x1080) as well as DVD and BlueRay outputs. And eventually also for web. My main goal is to edit for speed and compromised quality in the offline / rough cut stage and once picture's locked move to a higher quality timeline without having to reanimate all the photos for a higher resolution.
What do you all recommend for this project for offline and online timeline settings?
Any advice is as always much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Regards
    sk

Final Cut did not interpret the titles incorrectly.
You are exporting HD 1920x1080 video which is square pixels and then asking Compressor to make it rectangular pixels for PAL SD 720x576(whether it is 16x9 or 4x3). The HD to SD conversion is causing the distortion of the titles. This should help explain it better
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/gerard_rick/pixel_madness.php
I would try adding the titles after it has been converted to PAL SD. I prefer Natress(a plugin for FC around $100/70 Euros) over Compressor for PAL to SD conversion.
If you can't buy Nattress here is one approach:
*Export without titles and convert to PAL in Compressor
*reimport into PAL 16x9 SD sequence
*add your titles from the HD sequence(your titles will have to be resized)
*open a title in the motion tab and adjust scale & distort to get the best possible compromise(copy & paste setting to all other titles-you may have to manually check each one as some may have special needs)
    *export and compress for DVD
This does involve extra work but there is no simple answer for converting to SD without compromises.

  • Different gamma between Final Cut & Quicktime with ProRes

I am experiencing a gamma shift in my exported ProRes clips from Final Cut when viewing in Quicktime (typically, Quicktime's gamma results in a more washed-out file, and this seems to be specific to my ProRes exports). Is anyone else having this problem? And does anyone know a resolution?

  • Final Cut choking on ProRes from external in Multicam

    Background....
I have a bunch (~30hrs) of footage from a weekend of shooting. All was shot in AVCHD at 1080p30 and transferred into FCP with ProRes 422 onto two 1tb WD MyBooks which are daisy chained through FW800 off of my original 500gb which is also into the iMac over FW800.
    Problem...
I've been working with some of the footage already with no problems, even multicam(only 2 angles). But I am now working on getting a 3 cam multi to work but every 15-30 seconds of running through it, I keep getting RT messages, I unchecked the box to warn and when I should be getting the message, the video just lags, I pause and then continue with similar results....
    Question....
One of the RT messages mentioned that it was drive speed.... am I really saturating the Firewire bus with 3 clips at ~17.5mb/s and not with 2 clips? If so is there anyway to throttle the preview quality/bandwidth of the clips without actually down resing them?

You're not going to get a RAID 5 array with 6TB for $3,000.
Sonnet, Dulce, CalDigit all make great SATA solutions using Infiniband signaling between the enclosure and the Mac that are reliable, high-performance arrays, but they are significantly more than $3,000 for 6TB.
I prefer the Sonnet Tech D800RAID unit, but for 6TB raw drive space, the retail price is $5,495. It's a 8-drive array. That means that in RAID 5 you only lose 12.5% of the total raw drive space to parity data. If you build a 4-drive RAID 5 array, you'll lose 25%.
For eSATA, I prefer MacGurus' Burly enclosures, into which I install Seagate 7200.11 1RB drives. The problem with that solution is that it's RAID 0, not RAID 5. But you can build a 5-bay system for less than $1,500. So, you could build two of them for less than $3000, and use the second one as a back up for the 1st one. Don't set them up as a RAID 1, rather, set up the 2nd one as a JBOD (5 separate drives) and do file copying overnight from the 1st one to the 2nd one. That will then be your file protection, and it will never be more than one day behind your working array. Also, the drives install in removable trays, so when one of the back up drives is full, slide it out, label it, and stick it on the shelf as a 'permanent' archive of sorts.
If you ignore the overnight unattended file copy process, for less than $3,000, you'd have the equivalent of a 6TB 6-drive RAID 5 array. Sort of. What I mean is, you'd have 5TB of usable drive space with full file protection.

  • MPG to Final Cut Pro , convert mpg files to FCP freely

Why need to convert/import MPG files to Final Cut Pro?
Final Cut Pro is the premium choice for any Mac video editing, and it is widely used by Mac users now. These MPEG standard files can be these different codes and cause failure in importing to Final Cut Pro. If anyone comes across the situation, the best solution is to get aids from MPEG/MPG to FCP converter for Mac, which can help you to convert MPEG group files to FCP compatible video format and then files can be easily imported for editing job.
As we know that Final Cut Pro don't natively support MPG, MPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 files, it can import MPEG-4 files (but need to be rendered once you place them on your timeline) and MOV files (without rendering). Therefore, to import MPG to Final Cut Pro directly, the best way is to convert MPG to Final Cut Pro supported Apple ProRes MOV files.

Import unsupported MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express
Summary:If you are looking for the best way to transcode MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos to ProRes MOV for FCP 7/X and FCE, you can follow this post, it has offered best solutions for editing MPEG videos on Mac in Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express.
    Cases:
The following are two problems when some users import MPEG-1/MPEG-2 to Final Cut:
"I am trying to import MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X. I have the raw files from a Sony Handicam HDR-SR5 as well as raw files from an Sony Handicam MDR-CX560. These files were recorded as MPEG-2 files and copied from the camera hard drives (entire folders were copied containind the MPEG-2 fies) to a local hard drive on my computer. Final Cut Pro X does not recognize the files and will not import them. I have tried to use Compressor to conver the fies. I am using the very latest version that touts being able to export to Final Cut X format. I don't see that option anywhere in the settings."
    Question:
Is there a way to get MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X without having to convert them?
    Answer:
Don't try to work with (highly compressed) MPEG 2 in FCP X. Use software to convert to ProRes 422 first, it's best codec for final cut pro or final cut express. Life will be much easier for you if you do. ProRes 422 is roughly between 5 and 8 times bigger than native camera footage - sometimes as much as 10 times, I believe, but it's well worth it for editing, effects and playback quality. The time required depends largely on your processor power but 30 mins sounds realistic.
    Software you need:
Pavtube HD Video Converter for Mac
This software can convert MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Apple ProRes 422 codec for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Expr editing without rendering.
    Step by step guide:
    1. Download and install the best MPEG1/MPEG2 to ProRes Converter and launch it to add your videos to it.
    2. Choose output format. Click on the “Format”> Final Cut Pro, Apple PreRes 422(HQ), Apple PreRes 422, Apple ProRes 422(LT), etc are all the proper choice for you.
    3. Click "Settings" to adjust the parameters as you want, like Video Codec, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, bit rate, channels. Set the video frame rate as 30fps, video size as 1920*1080 will be better.
    4. Click Convert button to start MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut friendly Apple ProRes 422 for native editing on Mac OS X.
    5. When the conversion ends, you can run the Final Cut Pro and click File --> Import --> Files to import the resulted MOV files and edit them in FCP easily, you can follow this import video to fcp guide.
From the steps above, I think you got the point to convert and import MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to Apple ProRes 422 for Final Cut editing, please have a try, this software will solve you MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 importing and editing problems, and then you can import and use your MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 in Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Express on Mac without any problems.

  • Audio And Video out of sync in Final Cut, but not in quicktime

I heave searched the forums to no end to find the solution to this issue, unfortunatley, I have not solved the problem.
I am using Final Cut 4.5 on a G4 running OSX 10.3.4. This system has worked perfectly for years with no problems. Neither the system, hardware, or software has ever been changed on this machine. Suddenly last week, despite perfect sync while previewing the capture, the Audio and Video were of sync in Final Cut, but when checked in quicktime, there were no problems. That is how I eventually figured out this was a final cut problem.
By out of sync, I don't mean it is by a specific number of frames that can be adjusted and then everything is fine, the sync seems to drift so that if you edit the audio to be in sync in one part of the video, it won't be at the end. Also, it is out of sync from the first frame played, not a gradual drift.
This is definitely not an issue of frame rates or final cut settings as will be evident by the steps I took below to find the source of this problem.
This is what I did to attempt to fix the problem:
    - Check drives using disc utility and repair permissions
    - Remove Final Cut Preferences using Apple guidelines
    - Switch hard drives
    - Delete Final Cut and reinstall newer version of final cut (since the capture files played fine on Final Cut 5.1 on another machine)
    - reinstall entire OSX 10.3.9, wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Final Cut 5.1
    - switch ram slots, and even replace ram with different sticks from another G4 machine
None of these solutions worked. Is there some hardware problem with my G4 that is suddenly causing Final Cut to play audio and video out of sync?
Hope you can help, otherwise this otherwise great G4 is going in the dumpster!
    Thanks

For what it's worth, I'm having what looks to be the same problem. Driving me insane. Here's what's going on-
    Editing in FCP 6.0.2
QT was just updated to 7.3.1 the other day (hmm)
On an MacBookPro machine, OS 10.5.1
Software updater says everything's up to date of course.
    DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal (footage was shot at 24PA on a DVX100b)
In Quicktime, the file previews fine, everything's in sync, everyone's happy. In FCP, the video and audio are wildly out of sync. I did a test inside of quicktime and sliced out a small portion of the media clip and did a "save as" and this small slice played in sync in FCP. However, this did not work for the entire clip. Clip is weighing in at 5.58GB for a 32 minute run.
I'm trying to multicam 2 tapes together and manually syncing these up is proving to be difficult at best. When anyone gets any ideas/leads/patches, let us know.

  • HSV filter in Motion makes clip disappear in Final Cut Pro

I'm running Motion 1.0.1 and Final Cut Pro HD 4.5. Whenever I add the HSV filter to a video clip in Motion, import the Motion file to Final Cut and play it in the timeline, it appears that the clip is missing.
Although I get no error messages from Final Cut saying that the clip is missing, it does not show up during playback. Every other layer from Motion plays as normal while the layer with the HSV filter applied to it looks as though it is gone. I should add that the video plays normally within Motion.
I could just export the video as a Quicktime movie, but I don't want to compress it.
    Anyone had a similar issue?

That's a ridiculous answer. If there is a program designed to do something it will do it. If it's not operating properly there is a reason for it.

  • Final Cut Export DVCPRO HD720p uncompressed/hi-res for tape and projection

Well I've been through the many suggestions found throughout the forum and have tried many combinations of exporting options, timeline options and codecs and still for the life of me can't find the one that works. Please offer any advice you can.
    Objective:
Export a 30 minute film with a DVCPro HD 720p60 timeline shot in 720p 23.98fps as uncompressed and as high resolution as possible for transfer to a Beta-SP for big screen projection.
In trying the Uncompressed 8 and 10 bit exports the film's video became jumpy and some color's over saturated to the point of pixelation (is that a word?). I've created new Uncompressed timelines and exported from there as well to the same over saturated/pixel effect.
Is just an export of a Quicktime movie with current settings and then use compressor with "DVDPRO HD 720p60" my best options? I've tried that too but not happy with the softness of some of it and as we're projecting BIG, I want to have the best resolution possible.
Oh - and this time - size does NOT matter.
    Thanks for any pointers.

What I mean is - how to create then a Quicktime someone without Final Cut can play. Exporting as a self-contained Quicktime movie does not seem to creat the stand alone file I may need. Any tips?

  • Final Cut doesn't playback when copy any files over network

First, i want say a thanks for all guys who help us here. Thank you very much. Much appreciate.
    Now, problem...
My Final Cut works perfect sice a starded used 2005, never i have a one problem.
But last week i discover this:
When a copy any files between macs over a network the final cut doesn`t play in the sequence. nothing happening. but if i stop copy in the finder, it ok, everything back normal again.
I try using a project over a network and its perfect, fine.
only if i copy anything in the finder and final cut doesnt play.
Guys, anyone have this problem? Its normal?
I dont know, i try many this before i post here and nothing works.
Ps.: I have two imac i7 and this two have same problem.

I hope i understand you right.
when you copy a file from one network to another sometimes the file paths are lost. Like if you have a drive called FCP HDD on one cpu and FCP HDD3 on another. The original path is associated to the copied files on FCP HDD drive and not the FCP HDD3 drive so a path would be lost there.
If you are connected via gigabyte ethernet cable and the imacs are synced then there would only be a latency problem as the gigabyte ethernet is slower than sata and FW 400 or 800.
If you are just coping the source media (meaning the files you captured from the cam) then all of your paths will be new based on the place you copied them too.
so if i have a project like 'My Commercial' and that is the name of the project file then it is it own project. The media within that project is associated to which ever drive you put it on.
If i move the project to another computer then the media is not there.
Why? Because the project is looking for the name of the original drive which may not exist on the imac you moved the project too. Unless you have a server.
Also, Even if you do move the media files to the drive that IS connected to the new computer the drive is most likely to have a different path for the media.
What you want is to connect the 2 cpus in a way that allows drive sharing.
Do you get the red 'Media Offline" error in the timeline?

  • Determining number of elements in a bitset?

    Neither size() or length() returns the number of bits in the set, so how do I iterate over a bitset? Bitset bs = new Bitset(10); bs.set(3,true); bs.size(); // returns 64 -- who cares about the memory used? Does the JVM even really know? bs.length();
