Finder Hangs
I am new to OS X - I waited for the new MacBook Air and Lion to come out then made my move. I had been using both Windows and Linux systems and decided to give OS X a try. I liked the fact more apps are supported with OS X than Linux - and it is "supposed" to be stable like Linux... well...
I have been having a LOT of problems with the system "hanging." This is not a typical "hang" as eventually apps will respond - but terribly slow and I end up having to shut down and restart (which is very strange for Linux-based systems). I do not know what is causing the hang ups - but I do know I often have to hit CMD-OPT-ESC and "restart" Finder - which will show as "not responding."
Normally the only apps I have running are Google Chrome, Thunderbird, and TeamViewer - all of which will normally shut down gracefully after the hang.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how I might fix it?
Hi Lennart,
in principle deleting the Finder preference file should have solved the problem - given you deleted the file from the right account (user B).
Try this: log-in as root (Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X), then navigate to /Users/User_B/Library and drag the Preference folder to the desktop folder of User B (do NOT move it to the desktop when logged in as root, since this folder is not accessible when logged in as User B). Now restart and login as User B. If the problem is gone start moving back important preference files from the folder you moved.

Finder hangs when sorting in list view on external USB3 portable Seagate
This seems to be a specific Mavericks Finder issue as I have a Mountain Lion backup that does not have this problem. Finder hangs on the Seagate when selecting the Music folder that holds all of my music files (over 300 GB) organized by iTunes in artist and album folders.
I keep two backups, one on an external 1 TB portable USB 3 Seagate drive (5400rpm) and one on an external 2 TB portable USB 3 Toshiba (5400rpm) drive. Sorting thru the iTunes Media/Music folder in any way on my internal HD and on the Toshiba is almost instant and navigation/scrolling is fast. On the Seagate, using Column and grid view works well, even setting the column view to sort (I use Modification Date) causes no hangs and I can easily scroll and select any artist, album or song. But as soon as I select List View for the Music Folder, it starts counting the files and hangs with a spinning beach ball FOREVER. I have to relaunch the Finder and instantly click off the window as it will otherwise hang immediately.
This only happens on the external Seagate, I can easily navigate and scroll the Music folders - which are identical - on my main and external Toshiba drive.
Here's what I did to troubleshoot this issue:
Deleted Finder pref. files (com.apple.finder.plist including lock file inside my Library folder, there were 4 who had some random numbers at the end.
Set all and specific folder views and list views to not sort
Ran Disk Utility from both internal and Rescue partition (no errors found)
Ran Onyx scripts to clean up and do maintenance (no issues popped up)
Booted up in Safe Mode and deleted pref files (as suggested on another forum)
Reset PRAM
Confirmed this issue with other Mavericks boot drives and one Mountain Lion full backup.
I use Soundflower (mentioned in another post), Caffeine, and MenuMeters
Any ideas? Any other preference files to delete? Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly!
FYI, it seems specifically to happen when I expand a lot of folders in List View, and especially when I have multiple finder tabs/windows open—but that could just be subjective impression. There are no crash reports or anything in Console—I don't know of any other way to monitor the process.
I deleted the finder plist. I also uninstalled and reinstalled XtraFinder—which I’m quite sure wasn’t the problem, since it happened regardless of whether it was installed. In fact, if anything, it seems to crash less when Xtrafinder is active. I did have an additional (second) finder plist file which I deleted—I believe it was left over from TotalFinder—but that didn’t seem to fix it, although it also seems to be happening less frequently.
It’s definitely some sort of bug, and really only bothers me when trying to sort by Date—which can be done other ways, of course.
Will definitely keep you up to date if it changes, and thanks kindly again for your response. -
Finder hangs when accessing external drive
My finder hangs when accessing an external drive.
It is specific to a drive the I created on my TC disk.
That drive and TC work perfectly unless I mouint it and alter anything on that disk (I can read ok but writing causes a freeze.)
The writing that I do is always ok; if I trash or move something it always ends up where I wanted it after a restart.
The process looks like:
I drag an item to the trash (or another directory) and the progress bar shows success down to 3 or 5 seconds and then it stops (curser becomes a spinning beach ball.)
I can hear the tone of a successful transfer if I wait a little while but the finder is unresponsive untill I restart.
Once restarted I can check the external disk and the file transer (to a directory or the trash) appears to have completed without corruption.
I have repaired drives and permissions all over the place with no results.
Can I just say that I tired of constant unnecessary updates that slow my computer, rearrange my settings and cause crashes and other problems that have to be researched and chased down through hours of online troubleshooting. I would love to have thoroughly tested software and hardware that just works without the hassle of having to constantly tweek my machine to get it to work consistantly. Are you saying you have this problem only with one drive, not with others?

Finder Hangs Crashes and Burns in Lion: Steps to FIX
Issue Description:
Since installing OSX Lion the Finder hangs, entire system becomes unresponsive, cannot force Finder to relaunch and osx must be forced to restart.
Occurred intermittently, usually when executing searches via Finder or Spotlight, or when moving files between folders.
History of FAILED steps taken to fix issue (via Apple Support):
SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)
PRAM reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
Clear User and System Caches
Cleared Login Items for User Profile
Ran Apple Hardware Test (3 hours, more info http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509)
Reinstall Lion via Recovery Partition method (Control + R, ie not a clean install of Lion)
The above was included in case you’re dealing with same issue and troubleshooting wondering what the **** to try next. Or if you plan on calling Apple Support it will give you some idea of what might be planned (and averted).

Finder hangs when moving files around in Flash Drive
Hello Apple Community! I just wanted to ask a question and a solution to my experience on OS X.
Recently, I started to experience Finder hanging on me when I move around files from in and out my flash drive.
What's happening in the picture was me trying to move the ebook into the 'cmpsci3' folder, but Finder hangs from the point.
I moved the Finder window and the icon just stays there.
There is nothing really wrong with the movement of files; the moving does work. The problem is that the small file operations
window disappeared and Finder just hangs there.
I tried two solutions already:
1. Remove the com.apple.Finder.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences
2. Repair disk permissions on both OS X drive and USB03FD (my flash drive).
Unlucky for me, the problem isn't fixed. I tried to tackle the problem myself and sometimes I see two Finder processes running
in the Force Quit Applications dialog. I followed the instructions from this threadTwo Instances of Finder Running, but that does
not work either.
I looked around and saw that making a new user would fix the problem. I would like the community's advice on how to fix this problem
before I do anything drastic.
Thanks for reading and helping me out!I decided to go the long way and move everything where I wanted it to be. I moved everything around in Bridge, I then synchronized the folder to reflect how it should. So far so good!
Thank you all for your help and interest, I really appreciate everything!
I do have one more question now, I will also start a new thread to see what else I can get, but again thank you!
I have syncroniced the folder after making the changes, and due to the problem I was having last time I did it again just to double check. It said there were over2k photos missing so I clicked sync, let it do its thing. And just to tripple check I ran it again and it is saying the same thing, missing over 2k photos. What does this mean? -
Finder hang after file delete NTFS Samba share after 10.6.7
I have Finder problem!
Before 10.6.7, I had no issue with a Samba share on win2008 server, I have full admin rights for the files.
Now, I can move the files, change the Directory they are into another, rename them, basically I can do what ever I want with them, except deleting them.
As soon as I try to delete a file or folder, Finder hangs, And I can't stop the process, killing the network connection does nothing, trying to unmount it wont work either.
Any clues? Suggestions?I have tightened up to the problem to the ds_store invisible files.
If the folder that has a ds_store file in it and you trash it, it freezes up the mac. (For some reason not most files)
But after the freeze, the folder permissions get corrupted (or changed maybe not sure) then trashing doesn't work again.
But if you view the invisible ds store files and delete it you can trash the folder.

Finder hangs when HD is opened/Attempts to connect to Network Server
We have two iMac G3s running 10.3.9.
The computers are connected to a Dlink ethernet router.
One of the computers will occasionally hang either when booting or when we double click on the hard drive. It appears to be trying to connecting to the other networked computer. We get the spinning beach ball plus an empty window.
While it's hanging, other applications can be opened from the dock and seem to be functioning normally.
If the ethernet cable is unplugged, the system will start normally.
One guess was that an alias to files on the other had been added to the sidebar and that the computer was trying to resolve this when the HD was opened. I saw this mentioned in a different Mac forum. Is this a problem? Is there a way to see why the one machine is trying to connect to the other?
What I've tried so far:
Disk Utility (Repair Permission/Verify Disk)
Disk Warrior 3.03 (Rebuild the directory
Removing the plist (I got a login window that then wouldn't allow typing the password.)
Cocktail
Suggestions?
iMac G3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I agree that it is very annoying, but in my experience the Finder hang does eventually resolve itself if you wait long enough.
Not being that patient, I usually relaunch the Finder from the Dock, which clears the hang immediately. -
Finder Hanging On Startup, Restart
This just started several days ago; the Finder hangs after a normal startup. After say, three minutes, everything finishes loading to my desktop and system operation is normal, other than the HD seems to perhaps be running too much.
Here is my console log, parsed to only include events since my last shutdown. Help is appreciated.

My Mac REALLY hates RTFs: any app (including Finder) hangs
This problem is affecting my work Mac, a mirror-drive-door 1.25 GHz G4 with 768 MB of RAM, running OS X 10.3.9.
A couple of days ago, it became deathly afraid of RTF files... or so it would seem, since any time an RTF is anywhere in sight, the application that's trying to access it, including the Finder, will hang.
Some recent examples:
Entourage: Trying to read an email from a coworker that contains an RTF attachment, just reading the MESSAGE, not opening the attachment, hangs Entourage.
Finder: Hangs just getting a directory listing if there's an RTF in the directory. If there's an RTF on the Desktop, Finder just hangs, period.
TextEdit: I was writing a document, and when I came to save it, as soon as it was saved (as an RTF of course), TextEdit hung.
Downloading a new utility, opening the DMG file, which contained an RTF, again hung the Finder.
I've tried deleting any com.apple.* preferences that were modified in the last week and rebooting, no luck. The only way I can get around this problem is to go into the directory via command line in Terminal and delete the RTF file. (OK, that's ONE thing that doesn't seem to be affected by RTFs, but that's it.)
It's not any one particular RTF file; as the examples demonstrate, ANY RTF, including one I've just created, will do it.
I'm no novice with the Mac; I've been using Macs exclusively for 14 years, and I work as a web developer. In other words, I'm a "power user" who's spent 8+ hours in front of a Mac almost every day for a decade and I know the system extremely well. I've never seen anything even remotely like this.OK, here's an update: I just created a new user account on this computer and with that account I am able to load RTFs OK. So it does seem to be some kind of preferences issue, or at least something specific to my main user account. I'm still stuck on exactly what it could be, though.

Finder hangs, internal HDD "not ejected properly"
My finder hangs and then it says "disc not ejected properly", which I'm pretty sure is referring to the internal HDD (in a 1TB Fusion). I know this because in iStats the HDD drops off the monitor.
Already had the HDD replaced once per Applecare when it failed their diagnostic test, but the issue came right back, and a clean install didn't work for long. Then, Apple "repaired" it because this HDD passed their test, 2 clean installs later and I still have same issue. Safe mode, PRAM/SMC reset, nothing has worked.
Anyone seen this or know what to do?Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Finder hangs (and "UserActivityAgent") after install
I installed Leopard with no issues (until I rebooted). Now, I have nothing on my desktop, and the finder will not run. I can open apps from the Dock, but I can't even open folders from the dock.
I let Spotlight finish indexing, and then used it to get to the Activity Monitor. Finder and something called UserActivityAgent are listed as "Not Responding". Killing and restarting them does not help. I've rebooted my iMac 5 times, but no luck. Each time the Finder hangs on startup. Any ideas?Lawson Culver wrote:

I am having the exact same issue. From what I have read though, we have to re-install with the archive and install option. Try that, I am going to and will be back in a couple of hours with updates. -
Finder hangs on creating alias / Preview too (10.8.2)
Dear Apple-Community,
everytime I create an alias on my TimeCapsule, where I store my files, finder hangs.
Also, when I try to preview a file that is stored on the TimeCapsule, finder just stops working.
All that remains to do is to hold the power button until the system shuts down, as a restart of finder, nor does alt-cmd-esc work in killing finder.
Does anybody have a similar problem or does anybody have a working solution for this?
Thanks so much
Alex.Have you tried restarting your Time Capsule? Doing this will have the device perform a filesystem check to ensure its formatting is intact, which if not may result in hangs and crashes.
Try opening the Console utility on your system and select the "All Messages" section in this. Then in this view try your actions on the Time Capsule to see what error messages if any show up in the Console. Let us know what they are (approximately if you can't copy and paste them). -
Soon as I log in the finder hangs up
I just got a new HD at Apple Store Sunday. Now the mac is hanging up as soon as I log in. The finder shows BBOD and the dock is permanently showing instead of hiding at bottom. Not sure what to do at this point. Just rebooted and logged in at 2nd log in and same thing. Any ideas what to do?
I can log in normally. When I do, finder hangs immediately. With peripherals attached (speakers, ethernet cable, etc) I cannot boot into safe mode. With everything disconnected, I can boot into safe mode. Regardless of how I log in, finder hangs within a few seconds as soon as I select a file. The dock is stuck in the up position. Reinstalling the OS (command-R) did not clear up this problem. I'm hesitant to wipe down the disk since I just got the new HD on Sunday and it took me all week to get it 80% operational. Now it starts okay but if I select an app it takes about 5 minutes of the beach ball before I can double click it open. Then it's 5 minutes for the click to actually force the machine to start the app. If I select a file, it's five minutes before I can double click it open. Even though I have several print drivers install, I always get a prompt that I don't have any print drivers installed.

Finder hanging - can anyone help?
I am running Lion on my MacBook. Working with an old and new external seagate hard drives. The finder is hanging and I have to restart the computer to do anything with the finder. All other programs still work while the finder hangs. If I try the force quit/ relaunch option - the finder never restarts unless I reboot. I have included the latest console message below.
I would appreciate any help.

Try removing any haxies you got installed (Xounds) and see what happens.
/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationEnhancer.framework
/Library/PreferencePanes/Application Enhancer.prefPane
/Library/Application Enhancers/Xounds.ape
Better yet run the Application Enhancer Installer and use it's uninstall function. -
Finder hangs up on Samba Shares
Hello guys,
I could nearly freak out.
I have installed SuSE as a VM for web development purposes. There is a Samba Server running on this VM. I could easily connect and edit files back on Mavericks. But right after the update to OS X Yosemite it's been the **** on earth.
Whenever I connect and try to edit files, Finder just starts hanging and the connection gets lost again. Finder hangs for about 2 min.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
Any help appreciated"Try connecting to the drive with CIFS:\ instead of SMB:\. I have had the same issue and when trying it with the CIFS protocol it worked."
