Finder is gone - how do I get it back?

Question

After installing a recent system update my finder disappeared also everything on my desktop. The files are still there (can be accessed through Word, Excel, etc) but it's blank. Don't even have an apple menu available unless I'm running an application. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Followed instructions in an earlier post on this - the finder is continuously trying to reload and then crashing -- got into Terminal, typed open -a Console.app

Go into System Preferences->Sharing and change the Computer Name to something else.
Go into System Preferences->Time Machine, click on Change Disk button. In the sheet that appears, select None and click the Stop Backing Up button.
These two things have fixed my clients machines who have experienced this crash. Once you get the Finder to stop crashing, you can reset the Computer Name and Backup Disk back to what they were before. Good luck...
