Finder is lagging!

Hello,
I ran a Software Update today and now I can't use the Finder for anything! I get the infamous spinning ball and when I force quit the finder it relaunches and all is well. When I tried to empty the trash I got the same thing. Any suggestions?

I started having exactly the same problem about 12 hours ago, no light to shed, I guess I'll have to open a support case.

  • Screen Sharing display of Finder app lags & black patches

I'm trying to share the screen of a headless Mac Mini with a Retina MBP over ethernet (via thunderbolt display and time capsule) using the built in screen sharing app, and my fourth generation iPad over wifi using a VNC app. My problems are as follows:
    - intermittent black patches over the screen which I have drag a window over, or move a mouse over, to make disappear. This only happens on the Retina MBP, and doesn't happen on the iPad. This is considered solved in another thread, but the solution was to update Apple Remote Desktop which I do not have installed.
    - On both Retina MBP and iPad, the outputted display does not update when I make a change in the Finder application. E.g. say I create a new folder. I will not see the folder I have created until I drag the window elsewhere.
This problem is the same regardless of the display quality (full or adaptive), or the resolution.
    I appreciate any help.

  • A Hum, a Lag, and Zero!

Right now I am zeroing out my harddrive. It seemed to be my last(ish) option. My prolem was that my harddrive would start spinning after 10 mins or so of actively being started. It would also give an unfamiliar (but small) hum. But that wasn't the worst - the worst was when all applications started lagging with the spinning beach ball symbol. Finder also lagged, if not more than the other apps. I have pretty much everything backed up, so it's not a huge deal. My problem is that there is either an overheating issue, a systematic issue, or the harddrive is done with. I've had the comp for a little over two years. (12" PB 1Ghz, 1.25 RAM).
My newer issue is that the zeroing process seems to be taking a very very long time. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do to hurry the process, or something I should have done instead? Also, is my computer almost done with?

P.S. I didn't have the Tiger install CD on me, so I'm using the Panther CD's that came with the computer. I plan to install Tiger later.

Third party applications may have their own methods of storing files, or accessing drivers that are not commonplace among Apple's own applications, and do things that are not standard. That's why isolating a potential hardware issue first when you have the opportunity is a good idea. If the problem were happening when a third party application was installed, or an older version of Apple's own application than came with that operating system, it would be hard to say if the problem was the software or the hardware. Since you are zeroing take advantage of this opportunity to see if the problem occurs with just what is installed when you first install the operating system. If it does, it is much more likely to be hardware than anything else.

As noted we are just other users helping each other. Instead of venting you are more likely to get an answer or pointed in a better direction by describing your particular problem.
Read your post to yourself and imagine you are another user that wants to help. You have provided no useful information about your situation. No iMac chip speed, no burner info, no error codes......
It is possible that your optical drive has seen better days and might need to be replaced.

  • Nokia phones lags behind competitor in features

Hi all, I have been disappointed at Nokia's new line of releases of smartphones, I find them lagging behind in features in both hardware & software.
I am very impressed by Android devices like Motorola's Milestones & Samsung's galaxy S2, I like my N900 but is seriously considering upgrade to the Motorola Milestone 3 which hasn't been release yet.

yeah u r rite but i think nokia is going to bounce back with the windows phones..

    On Second thoughts...
I don't really know how well Logic Express 7 performs on the Mac Mini because I have not yet had the chance to experience the two together. Don't let that put you off the idea though! From my understanding of the system requirements printed on the Logic Express homepage, it states that a G4 or faster system is required, however Apple personally recommend a Dual G4 or G5 is recommended alongside a minimum of 512MB of Ram. This Does mean that Logic Express will run on the Mac Mini but you will most probably find it lags when moving samples in real time and rendering them onto your hard drive. If you really want to enjoy making "serious" music on the Mac then you really need to be looking at the iMac G5 or the iMac Core Duo (Intel) purely for your tempers sake. As for an Intel Mac Mini, there is no indication as to when we will be seeing one on the market and therefore you may find yourself on the fence between keeping your fixed budget and holding on a little or jumping in and getting on the right road to a digital musical life - mac style.
Maybe this will inspire your decision:

  • Is my 2007 MBP HD dying? Should I replace? Or could it be unsalvageable?

Problems: Constant grey screen asking me to restart. Looping of log in screen when restarting. Having to boot in safe boot. Finder constantly lagging just hitting a file for quick preview no matter how small. Unable to try to save files by moving them to an external HD because an error about file not readable or writable pops up midway through transfer. All this continues even after a clean Snow Leopard install.
Could it be the hard drive?
Crash report said something about a problem with the CPU, screen capped it twice, disappeared off my desktop along with a few other files.
Now is my 2007 MBP 2.33GHZ screwed? Should I just attempt to buy a new one?
Mind you, my MBP has never given me a problem until a month ago. It's my sole work computer and I really can't afford a new one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Trying to get help by the end of the day to decide whether or not to buy the HD and get it over night to start work again. Or bite the bullet and have to find a way to get a new mac book

You can use a powered external drive, c boot off the installer disk and install OS X onto it. (format HFS+ journaled in Disk Uitlity first)
Reboot holding option key and update, see if the computer runs fine like that.
If not it's another issue. If fine then perhaps you shoudl switch the hard drive

  • Reporting of file and folder sizes in Realtime?

    Hi,
I am sorry if this has been asked a million times before, but is there an option that I am missing or a third party soft that would allow my finder (and labels on my HDDs) to report the size in realtime? It doesn't seem to update untill I reboot... is this normal behavior? I am working off of a 80gb hdd, and I am always close to filling it up, so it would be of great help that I could see the actual size of my drives whenever I make any changes to them!
Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Click on the Desktop, then select "Show View Options" from the Finder's View menu. Check the box labeled "Show Item Info." Your drive data will be displayed below the Desktop icon.
The Finder normally displays window info in its status bar located at the bottom of the open Finder windows including available space. The Finder may get behind in updating the information in the status bar. This may be due to the Finder simply lagging or because the disk needs repair.
You can use the utility RefreshWindows to force the update (www.versiontracker.com.)

  • Aperture 2.1 Sluggish Exposure Adjustment Sliders

    Description of Problem:
    1. When the Straighten Brick is applied to an image being adjusted, the Exposure Brick sliders become erratic and do not track mouse movement or the Wacom Tablet Stylus tip.
    2. This condition substantially worsens when the Highlights and Shadows Brick sliders are also applied to the image simultaneously.
    3. A similar condition appears with the combination of Crop and Highlights and Shadows.
    4. This condition is so severe that I took my Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 4 Gig's of Apple Ram and NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 Vram Computer to the Apple Store Genius Bar for diagnosis and possible repair.
    5. After my having demonstrated the problem, the Genius Team took my set of internal hard drives out of my computer and installed them in a brand new Mac Pro in the Apple Store, where the problem persisted, thus eliminating my hardware as part of the the problem.
    6. It was then suggested to me by the Genius Team that I create a new Aperture Library, trash my Aperture Preferences and re-import my images into the new Library. The sluggish and erratic Exposure sliders problem persisted!
    7. I then, on my own, created a third Aperture Library and imported only a few images. As long as the Straighten Brick is not part of the adjustment pallet, the Exposure Brick sliders behave normally, tracking the mouse or Wacom Tablet Stylus Pen tip.
However, when the Crop and or Straighten Bricks are added or combined with the Highlights and Shadows Brick sliders, the Exposure and White Balance sliders become erratic, sluggish and nearly useless.
Of note, the Enhance sliders, however, are unaffected by the above combination of Adjustment Bricks.
    8. I then tested this scenario on both the 2 x 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon and 2 x 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro models in the Apple Store, with extremely similar results. The later, 3.2 GHz Mac Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Video card installed and having 4 Gigs of Ram.
    9. I tested the scenario with my images as well as with the the sample images installed within the Aperture Application Library, both with identical results.
    10. Clearly, this phenomena is a defect in the Aperture Software, as it can easily be demonstrated independently of specific Apple hardware, and as it is very common to apply the Straighten, Crop, Highlights and Shadows adjustments to an image, renders the Aperture Application useless, as an effective workflow solution. A Professional Photographer cannot guess at the Exposure settings and or wait and hope for the adjustment slider to track mouse movement while it jumps around erratically in the process.

What you're doing simply requires more calculations than your processor can perform in an acceptable amount of time. The tradeoff of the non-destructive image editor is that every transformation you apply has to be recalculated and effectively re-applied every single time you make any change to any one of them on the stack. Given the average size of a modern camera raw file, this gets very expensive very quickly.
There are certainly ways of caching intermediate data in the interest of drawing speed, but the white balance and exposure sliders fundamentally change every aspect of the image data's interpretation and are some of the most expensive operations you can possibly perform. Not only does it have to loop through every single pixel in the image to calculate the various gamma encodings you ask it to with every little nudge of the slider, but it also has to rotate them all by however much you've asked the straighten tool to. Top that off with the fact that Aperture has never been widely regarded as a "speed demon" and you've got laggy sliders.
Try Lightroom. You'll probably find it lags at times, too.
Now try sharpening a 1MB file in Photoshop 2 running on a Quadra. Not so long ago we had to wait hours for every single trivial adjustment to our low res and completely unprintable images to complete only to discover that it wasn't what we wanted at all. This wasn't a defect, it was the result of pushing the available technology beyond its limits. I have no doubt that Aperture could and should be optimized significantly, but the fact of the matter is that artists will always find ways to saturate the bandwidth of any computer on the market, however powerful.

  • Using 3.6.23. When i upgrade, trouble with Lloyds tsb site.

Using 3.6.23. When i upgrade, trouble with Lloyds tsb site. One of my accounts has code like>br all over it. Also when i want to access a specific account it logs me out. Cannot upgrade as cannot use internet banking. Any ideas? edit

After I loaded 5.5, then removed it and loaded 3.6 again, I had no problems.
Then my hard drive died and I installed a new one.
Then I downloaded ONLY 3.6 since I already knew I didn't like the changes that 5.5 had made and the kinks hadn't been ironed out. That was in July.
The hesitation problem started recently, toward the end of Sept. I have wireless cable modem that runs 36-54 mbps but in Sept/Oct I was visiting family and distance from their router sometimes meant running at 12 or 24. I thought the hesitation/lagging was due to that. BUT
Since coming home in mid Oct., although nothing about my home connection has changed, I am finding this lagging/not responding/hesitation problem continues AS IF the connection were slow but router/modem/internet connection are all intact.
This is what made me wonder if anyone else is experiencing this/reporting it to Firefox. Apparently not.

  • Help making an upgrade decision

I have a late 2009 unibody MBP (2.8Ghz dual-core (pre-i5, i7 etc), 8GB of RAM, 750GB Hard drive from Western Digital running at 5400). I have apple care for another year and a bit.
I like this computer a lot and am a power user. I always have parallels running, and have anywhere between 10 - 15 other applications at one time. I use photoshop, illustrator, matlab, among others ....
I'm thinking about upgrading to make things even snappier - sometimes I find things lag a little bit in specific situations. I'm wondering whether upgrading the whole machine makes sense or whether I should just invest in a super good SSD by Intel or something like that. Basically, what would help me more, a newer processer or a faster hard drive?

Hmm.. you need not really force the setModel to take a sortable table model. You can override the setModel to something like this:
    public void setModel(TableModel model) {
        super.setModel(model);
        if(model instanceof SortTableModel) {
//add listener for the table header.
//Set the up-arrow icon for the first column
            //blah..blah...
        else {
//You might want to check if there was already a table
//header listener added and if so, remove it.
}What do you think of this.

  • Hotmail on iPhone Or ipod touch mail app!!!

Hey people. Im only making this post to help people out. After a lot of research and a lucky unxpected find, i discovered a way to access your hotmail account on your maill.app
First you need to sign up for a GMX.com mail account (completely free, and EXCELLENT)
Then once inside, you need to add a mail collector account, suck as your hotmail
(The mail collector feature in GMX accesses your Hotmail account and downloads your email messages into the mail collector folder inside of your GMX mail account.)
(Inside the iphone mail app, once you set up your gmx account to work with it, you will have access to a folder that is named: "Mail Collector" and inside will be all of your hotmail emails.)
After you have signed up for a GMX email account, here is how to configure it with the Mail app:
    1. Under Settings, select "Mail", "Add Account", "Other", then "IMAP" or "POP" and use the following settings:
    Name: enter your name
Address: your full GMX email address
    Description: GMX
    Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: imap.gmx.com (when you're using IMAP) or
Host Name: pop.gmx.com (when you're using POP)
User Name: your full GMX email address
    Password: your GMX password
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name: mail.gmx.com
User Name: your full GMX email address
    Password: your GMX password
    Advanced
Use SSL: Off (SSL only works with incoming not going, but to be sure, turn it off for both)
    Authentication: Password (both incoming/outgoing)
Server port: 110 (incoming) and 25 (outgoing)
If you selected to use IMAP, you can map iPod Touch folders to GMX IMAP folders. Test first if the default mapping works before changing anything.
To change the mappings, got to Settings>Mail>GMX.
    - Select "Advanced"
    - Select "Drafts Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Drafts"
    c. Select "Sent Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Sent Mail"
    d. Select "Deleted Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Trash"
Click on "Advanced" each time to return to the prior menu after choosing a folder

It may have just been that this was the first sync. The messages are all there, but are in reverse order with the oldest message at the top of the stack. It is neither a small nor orderly stack. It may have been because it was the initial sync and this was the order that GMX pulled them from hotmail.
Then there is the lag. I guess that you, like me, tested this out by sending yourself some messages "just to make sure it worked". How long did you find the lag between sending something to hotmail and recieving it through GMX? Right now, I'm sitting on 15 minutes since I sent one and it still has not arived in the GMX collector.
Edit: Never mind on that last part. Seems Hotmail thinks something coming from my gmail account is spam. Twice. But not the ones for blue pills, lotteries from Europe, financially challenged nobility from African nations, or the young lady that wants to get to know me better if only I would stop by her site and see her new pictures.
    Thoughts?

  • Pages very slow since update

I'd read about people having trouble with some of the templates being very slow, but I've been noticing that ever since applying the update, typing in Pages is agonizingly slow on my computer. I'm working from blank templates, so it can't be something graphical, and using standard fonts like helvetica and Palatino. I've deleted prefs, etc. etc. and no improvement. It was fine before the update, although that may be coincidental.
Is anyone else seeing this? A document is fine when I first open it, but within a few minutes it becomes incredibly slow. Any suggestions?

Please remember that Keynote has been out for quite some time, and has several upgrades since it'sinception. Pages is still quite new, and has not had as much work done to it.
That being said, I did find a lag in typing on my system, but only in a certain instance.
If I create an entire document using the blank template, with several pages in the document (all blank) I find no text lag while typing on any of the pages.
If I create a document with a relatively heavy-graphic template and create several pages with a mix and match of different styles (some text, some graphicky) I find that there is a definite slow down the closer you are to the top of the document. For instance, typing on page one is a lot slower than on the last page.
Could it be that the text entry speed is based on where in the document you are typing? Comsidering this is basically the live update of a text-heavy xml document (and trust me, there is a lot of text in the xml document) this would stand to reason.
I seem to remember there was a similar problem tying into Keynote in one of it's early generations. Since then it has been updated to fix some of those issues. I'm sure they are working on Pages as well.
In the meantime, you probably wouldn't notice this if you were adding pages as you went, instead of adding all the pages and then inserting your text. Not the best workaround for some people, but it might be something to try.
(my texts were done on a 800Mhz G4 ibook with the zoom set to fit on the page)

    HI all first post here
I joined bt last wednesday moving from sky after a pretty awfull time. I have Bt Infiity 2 but i am not able to download the security software or set up an email address at all?
I also find the lag on online games appaling ??
can any one offer any siggestions or help
    thanks
    Simon

Your primary e-mail address may have been given to you when you ordered your service, so you should be able to login using this link  BT e-mail Login
As a new user you would be on the new BT mail, so it may be that you have to actually sign up for an address from within your MyBT login page. I am not sure what happens now.
Have you registered on MyBT yet?
You would probably need that info to download the security software, if you really want to use it. The general opinion on this forum, is that it slows the computer down a lot, compared with some of the free alternatives like Microsoft Security Essentials.
