Finder reports wrong disk usage

Get Info reports that I am using 127GB of disk space while Finder shows 199GB in use.  I've tried permissions repair, emptying trash, restarting, etc.  The change occured after I removed a virtual machine from Parallels and emptied the trash.
Any ideas how to get Finder to report the correct size?
Thanks

Have a look at how space is being used:

  • Finder not reporting correct disk usage

    Just installed Leopard on a MP 15'' and finder report my 120g disk has only 50g free. When I use WhatSize app it report only 32G as being used. I checked the drive for damage, and disk utils reported none. Before the install Tiger Finder was reporting I had 70g free. Has anyone else notice this?

    Open Disk Utility in your Utilities menu. Look at the drive entry and sub-entry. If you have two sub-entries then the drive was formatted with two partitions. If you see only one sub-entry then select the main drive entry and click on the Partition tab in DU's main window. The partition rectangle should show how the drive was partitioned. If you see a large gray rectangle below a white rectangle, then your drive was only formatted for 320 GBs. You can try resizing the existing volume by selecting that rectangle then grabbing the handle in the lower right corner with the mouse. Drag down to the bottom and then click on the Partition button. If you aren't able to do that then click on the Add [+] button below the rectangle area to add a new partition then click on the Partition button. This will give you a second 320 GB volume.

  • Finder shows wrong disk space (Time Machine turned off)

    Hi,
    I have a disk space issue with my Mid '11 MacBook Air. The actual free space in my Hard Drive is much more than the space what Finder reports.
    After trying almost everything i knew (Turned off Time Machine, used Disk Utility/DaisyDisk/OmniDiskSweeper), I have no success so it is starting to be annoying.

    There may be a directory problem.  Try Verifying your SSD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Finder reports wrong amount of free space

    Finder is reporting the wrong amount of free space on all my drives.  It's not from time machine local backups, because I've disabled those.  In fact, it's reporting MORE free space than there should be!  In all cases, Disk Utility shows the correct amount.  (So does the Terminal command df.)
    eg:
    external 120GB hard drive (USB) - finder says 137.83GB free (more than the drive can hold, nice) - disk util says 70 used 49.9 free... better
    external 1TB (firewire) - finder says 276.66GB free - disk util says 783.72 used 216.15 free
    internal 120GB SSD - finder says 108.32GB - disk util says 78.6GB used, 40.5 free
    Anyway to fix Finder?

    I noticed the same problem. I assumed it was from Time Machine's local backups (which exactly account for the space discrepancy between Finder and Disk Utility on my machine). But, as you say, you've disabled Time Machine local "snapshots." I can only assume you deleted the local backups (to free up the space they were using), emptied your Trash and are still showing the discrepancy.

  • Finder reports wrong sizes

    The size column in finder frequently reports sizes of folders wrongly as does get info. I have a whole series of folders showing 208K when there are 10-80 37Mb files inside. I can open the folder and see that all the files are there and have the right sizes, but the folder still reports 208K. If I alter the label colour, it will update the sizes, but this is very tedious!
    Any way to persuade finder to calculate sizes properly?

  • Finder reporting wrong file size

    I have a folder I wish to burn, it is 620 meg and has many small files in it, but when I go to burn it through the finder, I get an error that it is 900 meg and will not burn onto 1 disk. Backup tells me I need 3 disks for this folder, why?

    I think the issue has to do with the fact that some programs have not adopted the new method yet. Unfortunately programs like iTunes can be used on on operating systems as far back as Tiger which used the old system. I noticed this several months ago and find it very irritating, especially when trying to do things like burn DVDs/CDs and trying to fill them up as much as possible. The only thing you can do about it is provide feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and hope they fix it in upcoming releases of their software.

  • Migration Assistant Reports HUGE Disk Usage

    I just bought a core i5 MBP. I am trying to migrate my data from my old MBP using ethernet. Migration assistant reports that my account on the old MBP is more than 6 Million Gigabytes in size! Needless to say it doesn't think this will fit on the new drive.
    Any suggestions on how to give the migration assistant a reality check?

    I'd just let it run. It's probably just a "rounding error". It'll probably give itself a reality check as the process runs.

  • Activity Monitor shows wrong disk usage

    On my new MacBook Air (with Lion), Activity Monitor states I'm using 123 GB of the available 264 GB -- which is impossible, as it is still a "shadow" of my MacBook Pro, which only is using 107 GB of its 128 GB. Also, WhatSize on my Air is showing only 40 GB used... why would Activity Monitor be so wildly off -- or is there something else (possibly Lion-related) going on?

  • MacBook reporting wrong memory usage

    My MacBook is telling me I've used all but about 54MB of my 150GB hard drive. There's no way this is correct - I have a 200 GB external hard drive that I use for all music, movies, etc. - and I can't put anything else on the hard drive because it says that it is full. I've calculated the memory used under applications, system, library, users, etc., and it shouldn't be more than 12 GB. I've also only had the computer for about a month, so I haven't had the time to put that much memory onto the hard drive. Is there anything I can do?

    Thats an easy mistake to make. Open iTunes and go to Preferences. Under Advanced uncheck where it says *Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library* If you store your music on a seperate drive and don't uncheck this it makes a copy of everything in iTunes on your internal drive. Once you have unchecked it you can remove the music on your internal drive.

    Hi,
    SQL Server Management Studio Standard report-Disk Usage works normally in my test machine. My Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version is 11.0.3128.0.
    Before going further, I would verify if only Data/Log File Autogrow/Autoshrink Events shows the old information.
    “Transaction Log Space Usage (%)” uses DBCC SQLPERF (LOGSPACE) and shows how much empty space we have in the physical transaction log file. Disk space used by Data Files uses DBCC SHOWFILESTATS to get information.
    Data/Log File Autogrow/Autoshrink Events uses the data from Default Trace.
    You can use SQL Profiler to capture the activities. The following entries was recorded when I ran Disk Usage report.
    exec sp_executesql @stmt=N'
    begin try
    if (select convert(int,value_in_use) from sys.configurations where name = ''default trace enabled'' ) = 1
    begin
    declare @curr_tracefilename varchar(500) ;
    declare @base_tracefilename varchar(500) ;
    declare @indx int ;
    select @curr_tracefilename = path from sys.traces where is_default = 1 ;
    set @curr_tracefilename = reverse(@curr_tracefilename);
    select @indx = patindex(''%\%'', @curr_tracefilename) ;
    set @curr_tracefilename = reverse(@curr_tracefilename) ;
    set @base_tracefilename = left( @curr_tracefilename,len(@curr_tracefilename) - @indx) + ''\log.trc'' ;
    select (dense_rank() over (order by StartTime desc))%2 as l1
    , convert(int, EventClass) as EventClass
    , DatabaseName
    , Filename
    , (Duration/1000) as Duration
    , StartTime
    , EndTime
    , (IntegerData*8.0/1024) as ChangeInSize
    from ::fn_trace_gettable( @base_tracefilename, default )
    left outer join sys.databases as d on (d.name = DB_NAME())
    where EventClass >= 92 and EventClass <= 95 and ServerName = @@servername and DatabaseName = db_name() and (d.create_date < EndTime)
    order by StartTime desc ;
    end else
    select -1 as l1, 0 as EventClass, 0 DatabaseName, 0 as Filename, 0 as Duration, 0 as StartTime, 0 as EndTime,0 as ChangeInSize
    end try
    begin catch
    select -100 as l1
    , ERROR_NUMBER() as EventClass
    , ERROR_SEVERITY() DatabaseName
    , ERROR_STATE() as Filename
    , ERROR_MESSAGE() as Duration
    , 1 as StartTime, 1 as EndTime,1 as ChangeInSize
    end catch
    ',@params=N''
    Both queries use the default trace file. Disk Usage report use sys.traces to get the trace file path. I suggest check default trace file in sys.traces is correct. You can modify the query like below and check if the output returns the same result.
    SELECT TE.name AS [EventName] ,
    T.DatabaseName ,
    t.DatabaseID ,
    t.NTDomainName ,
    t.ApplicationName ,
    t.LoginName ,
    t.SPID ,
    t.Duration ,
    t.StartTime ,
    t.EndTime
    FROM sys.fn_trace_gettable('<default trc file path>', DEFAULT) T
    JOIN sys.trace_events TE ON T.EventClass = TE.trace_event_id
    WHERE T.EventClass >= 92 and T.EventClass <= 95

  • AirPort disk 'needs repair', Disk Utility finds nothing wrong...

    I have a 640GB hard disk that was just formatted for use as an AirPort disk. I zeroed the disk on my PC and then formatted it in Disk Utility while it was attached to my USB hard disk dock. Because the original partition scheme I tried to do would not format as specified (i.e., Disk Utility decided that since I put free space as the first partition with four partitions, that what I really wanted was just the three partitions), I repartitioned the disk as follows: 64.00GB for HFS+, 32.00GB for FAT32, 512.00GB for HFS+, 32.00GB for FAT32 (using Master Boot Record). After this completed, I ran Windows XP on my PC and diskmgmt.msc with the intention of deleting the first partition 64.00GB HFS+ and replacing that with 64.00GB NTFS. This seemed to work fine on Windows XP, but I could not do it on Windows 7 because Windows 7 automatically makes the last partition on MBR an Extended Partition without asking if you want it to be a Primary/Extended Partition. Next, as I only intended to boot this on my old PC, which I rarely use, I installed Windows XP on to the first partition (now 64.00GB for NTFS). The installation went fine, as well as the software I installed in Windows that will allow me to see the HFS+ partition from a Windows boot. This software recognized the partition and mounted it in Windows. Next, I shut down the PC and put the disk back into the USB dock to see if all was well from the Mac side. Disk Utility did not report any issue with the disk and was able to see and mount all of the partitions correctly; however, when I attached this disk to my AirPort Extreme, the light started blinking amber and, upon further inspection, was told that the "AirPort disk needs to be repaired". I went back to Disk Utility and verified the disk without issue, but no problems were found. To be complete, I also repaired the disk in Disk Utility, but still it seemed to find nothing wrong and the repair had no effect on the AirPort error message. When I attach the disk to my AirPort Extreme, it will only mount the two partitions that are FAT32. The HFS+ partition does not show at all. I understand that the NTFS partition will not show over AirPort, which is why I chose a small size for it. My main reason for creating the NTFS partition is so that if I ever have a problem with my AirPort Extreme or need to work with a large file, I will have faster access if it is on a SATA connection inside my older PC than over WiFi or connected to my USB hard disk dock. Windows XP does not recognize the default OS X partition type, so that was not an option. Any assistance on how to address this issue would be greatly appreciated. The applicable operating systems are: Snow Leopard (my Mac mini), Windows XP Pro SP3 (on the old PC) and Windows 7 (on the newer PC that is attached to the AirPort Extreme).

    Hi, i had experienced the same issue. After resetting tc to factory settings and reconfiguration everythings works as before.

  • Wrong display of disk usage

    This is where it started getting wrong. I used Winclone 3 to try to make a bootcamp image. Then I found out I didn't need that, so I clicked "move to trash" to delete the image file like what one would do to a normal file. However, it took longer than usual to carry out the "empty trash" process after I clicked "empty trash" (I guess I wasnt aware that a large image file indeed should take longer than usual to be emptied), so I stop the process by clicking the cross in the processing window. But, that didn't seem going right either and it hanged. Only thing I could do is to restart the computer even though it said the emptying process is still in progress. So I force quit finder and it successfully reboot. Although then the trash seemed empty, the disk usage wasn't looking good because when I removed some big movie files (tens of GB, eg. 57GB, 11GB), the disk usage isnt' changing. More importantly, when looking at the capture above, the used space of "Other" of the Macintosh HD is ZERO KB, which made me really think if deleteing the winclone image file had messed up something badly....
    ps I went into the recovery disk and did reparing disk and permission after the weird encounter while deleting the winclone image. Here is the log from the disk utility:

    I reckon reindexing the volume can help correct the disk usage display issue? I highly appreciate your help here!
    But a rather weird side note to what had just happened.
    Since I posted the question up, I'd been constantly searching for solutions and looking at the HDDs (internal and external), trying to sum up what might have gone wrong by checking the space taken up. But for a long while, I left my laptop plugged with the Time Machine for a coupld of hours untouched. When I came back and continued my search, I realized suddenly the disk space had updated itself. All the mass delete of files and space change is shown now - which is all before I reindexed the system. What a weird time gap the system takes to correct things. Now things seemed alright.
    Looking at the Daisydisk analysis. I concluded that it was a almost half size of mobilebackup that ate up the HDD space (~2xxGB). Now the analysis showed that big mobilebackup trunk is gone.

  • Finder reports all internal hard drives as zero kb, disk utility correct

    After upgrading to 10.5.3 finder is reporting internal HD's as zero KB in size and will not allow files to be coppied to them. Very Bad. Disk utility reports proper size and utilization. Does anyone have suggestions of where to start. File permissions have been repaired, before and after OS upgrade. Upgrade done from download not software update.
    Also USB subsystem appears to lock up occasionally disabling mouse and keyboard, both via ADC monitor and tower connections. Motherboard battery is depleted, though I thought this would only affect system time, could it be creating other issues?

    I also just had this problem. jdisk reports 83gigs used of 300GBs, finder reports 299GBs used.

  • Finder is not correctly reporting available disk space

    finder is not correctly reporting available disk space
    my drive is 50% full but finder shows there is only @ 35% left
    the difference is more than anything needed by the system
    any ideas on what is causing the problem?

    Try this:
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
