Finder sees a shared volume, but cannot mount it

I have a problem with a G5 that is on a network with a Mini and a G4, both set to up for Sharing. The Mini is also a print server.
(1) The G5 cannot log onto either the Mini or the G5. The G5 Finder sees and identifies both in Server Browse. It just no longer will mount them, displaying no message why.
(2) The G5 can print using the Mini as a print server, though!
(3) The G4 can log onto the Mini.
(4) The Mini can log onto the G4.
Any ideas?

I think those aren't simple files, though...
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
and some others may hold some of them.
I think most of the problem lies in the files/folders at Root called Automount, Network, and Servers.
If you wish to try to eradicate them with sudu Terminal commands I can gelp.
I've used Xupport to turn off hiding those Hidden files so it's easier to see those things, though I've been admonished for suggesting the regular User do such things... I hate the concept of Hidden Files... well, when everything goes right, they're not a problem, but over here, when things go wrong and Apple can't fix them, then most are at a loss.

This can be done from Single User Mode. You're going to need a little nerve though since everything is command line based.
    1) Enter Single User Mode by restarting and holding down Command+S on the keyboard. A whole bunch of UNIX stuff will go by on the screen in white text on a black background. When it's done, the command prompt will be sitting at:
    :/root#
    2) Above that, you'll see that it tells you to enter two commands. Run this one first by typing it in and pressing enter:
    /sbin/fsck/ -fy
This does a system file check. A good thing to do in your case as it may be damaged. It could take a while. When it's done, you'll be back at the :/root# prompt.
    3) Enter the second command and press enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    4) Type the following at the prompt:
    cd /Users/name/Desktop
Where it says "name" above, the short name of your user account goes there. If you're not sure what it is, first type:
    cd /Users
    Then type:
    ls
That's a lower case L, not a one. It stands for "list". You'll get a listing of all files and folders in the Users folder. So if your short account name is diane, then the command will be:
    cd /Users/diane/Desktop
After entering that command, the prompt should read:
    :Desktop root#
    Type:
    rm *.jpg
Be very careful to type is exactly as shown. rm followed by a space, then *.jpg. Press enter and all files ending in .jpg will be deleted from the Desktop folder. With 450,000 of them, you could be waiting a while for the prompt to come back.
    Type:
    exit
and press enter to boot back into OS X.

  • Can ssh into client iMac but cannot mount home directory ...

I've got a server running 10.4.11 and a bunch of client iMacs (10.5.n). If I ssh into a client iMac it lets me log in but cannot mount my home directory (which lives on the server). Obviously ssh is getting my credentials from the server but isn't getting (or cannot get) the information to mount my disk. If I log in through the gui on the client it all works fine. I suspect this is less of an error and more of a design. Is there a way to get the clients to mount my home when logging in with ssh? If not then Apple presumably has a reason for disallowing this behaviour. Is there a way around this? Perhaps with mount_afp?
We want to be able to log into many client iMacs at once to run computations on them. Eventually we want to do this on a suite of XServes and XGrid. This is all very easy with linux and nfs and I was expecting the same sort of ability through OS X. I know that I can export everything from the server with nfs (though that may not solve my problem) but I only have the one system and multiple users and I can't really experiment while they are connected.
Suggestions? Comments? If there are obvious examples of this elsewhere please point me toward them.

Well it's never worked that way for me. Do you actually use this method to log in?
I've gone through all of the server logs, watching what gets added as I log on to a client. I don't see anything there that suggests it is even attempting to mount the home directory. I also watched on the client and didn't see any errors. When I ssh into a client I see the following message on the terminal, "Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/server.some.place/Volumes/R1/UsersR1/username: Unknown error: 118" This suggests that the client knows where my home should be but doesn't know how to mount it.
I have enabled the basic setup on my server. User accounts have Home URLs like "afp://server.some.place/UsersR1/username" and Full Paths like "/Network/Servers/server.some.place/Volumes/R1/UsersR1" (R1 is a RAID disk). UsersR1 has been made into a Share Point and Server Admin tells me that the disk "will be automatically mounted using the AFP protocol as /Network/Servers/R1 on client machines". This part doesn't seem to be true as when I log into a client through the GUI the actual path that is mounted as my home is /Network/Servers/server.some.place/R1" (pwd in my home directory returns /Network/Servers/server.some.place/Volumes/R1/UsersR1/username which is a actually rather inconvenient).
Under the Advanced tab in the Workgroup Manager, Accounts pane, I've got "Allow simultaneous login on managed computers". This seems to work but also seems only to apply to the GUI, that is I can log onto several clients at once.
How do I ask a client machine what home directory information it is getting from the server for any particular user? Is there some setup on the client machines that will enable automatic mounting of homes through ssh? On the clients, the Directory Utility, which I have used to connect the client to a Directory Server, has a Mounts pane which allows me to "Edit automatic NFS mounts for this computer". I am not exporting any NFS from the server, but perhaps this is the way to make it work?
Perhaps what I want to requires Kerberos? I don't have that enabled.
When I have done this on a cluster of linux machines I exported the home directory from the server with NFS (exportfs) and then, using NIS and automount on the clients it "just worked". It was very simple. If it is supposed to work with Macs and OS X, it may be simple but it's not obvious.

  • Finder search on shared volumes: Works on 10.7, not on 10.8

In our office, we have a Mac Mini acting as a local server running OS X 10.8.3 with an external hard drive connected.  Each person in our office connects to the Mac Mini through an idividual user account, so that we can control each user's access to the folders on the external hard drive.  Some users are on OS X Lion and others are on OS X Mountain Lion.
All of our Lion computers are able to connect to the Mac Mini and do a Finder search for any items in the shared volume.  So a filename search for ".doc" on the "Shared" scope returns all Word documents on our Mac Mini server which they have permission to access.
That same feature is not working properly for users connecting through Mountain Lion.  When a Mountain Lion user does the same search - filename containing ".doc" - no results are returned initially, however if they toggle the search scope back and forth (like from "Shared" to "This Mac") a few times, eventually some results show up on the Shared search.
But with this issue, we can't be confident that the results listed by any search are complete or not.  Our business generates a lot of documents and audio files each day and the search function is a crucial part of our daily workflow.
The Mac Mini server has recently been upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion 10.8.3, and Mountain Lion users have just upgraded from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3, however the issue is still the same: users connecting with Lion 10.7.5 can search shared volumes properly, but users connecting with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 cannot.
Is there a solution to this that doesn't require a downgrade to Lion?

  • All Shared Volumes Do Not Mount

I have setup personal sharing across a wireless network and three Mac laptops. They all connect, but all the volumes from one Powerbook (a Smartdisk 250Gb Crossfire drive used to store music and photos) do not mount. The other Smartdisk Firelite shows up across the network. Problems printing, but that's probably a different question.

Hmmm - on my iMac i get an icon on my desktop - a picture of a drive with 3 people holding hands on it. It goes right beside my time machine, and external hdd icons...
The air doesn't get anything new on the desktop even after it mounts it in the device ...
attaching an external drive brings up a desktop icon on the Air.
I don't mean the login Guest account. When you log into a remote computer, if you do not click, "Connect as" and login with a regular account you default to a guest-like account.
If that is the case, click "disconnect" in Finder and then "Connect as" You should get a popup login window for the other computer. Otherwise you have limited privileges on the remote machine.

  • Vista PC's connect to network but cannot mount TC disks!!!!

I will start by saying that I have never had a problem with connectivity between my iMac and Macbook.
I have 2 PCs in the house running Vista. Both can connect wirelessly to the TC and access the internet through this without a problem. However when trying to connect the disks (TC disk and also one connected USB drive) I get an error.
Error reads "Unknown User, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the Disk's administrator (67)." I know the password I entered is correct.
    TC firmware version is 7.4.2
    File sharing is enabled.
Secure shared disks with TC password
AirPort Disk guest access is Read and Write
WIndows workgroup is set the same as on the Vista machines.
    WINS Server is blank.
The frustrating thing is that it used to work just fine and it appears that this is a recent event (the kids have been complaining for a while and I have only just now got around to looking at it seriously).
When I first purchased my TC 9 months ago we were a Windows only household. There was never any problem with connecting to the drives. It appears that the connectivity has got progressively worse over time.
At one stage I dumped the Windows AirPort utility and just tried to manually map the TC and other drive within windows (i.e. select Map Network drive, enter IP address of TC and then select the shared name) This worked for a while but now windows will not even see the shared drives. The TC is visible on the network considering it is the point where the two PCs connect.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get the two Vista PCs to connect?

OK. I have had a closer look at things and believe I am closer to identifying the source of the problem.
It appears that I am unable to use the Airport Agent to mount the disks because of the (so-called) "smart" firewall in Norton 360.
If I disable the Norton firewall I am able to get the disks mounted (mapped).
Now I do not want to have to permanently disable the firewall just so I can access the disks.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to configure the firewall so that it allows communication between the Vista PC and the TC? (i.e. any specific ports to open, protocols to allow, etc.)
It is also interesting to note that I get the same problem is I manually map the disks from within Windows Explorer (i.e. no problem with firewall disabled but constant invalid password with firewall active).

  • URGENT DSC: I can write to shared variables but CANNOT read them?

    hello everyone,
I'm using DSC to communicate with a DELTA DVP28SV PLC. I managed writing to a coil to to turn a fan on, and I also wrote to a register.
However, when i tried to read the coil (same coil i just turned on) or when i tried to read a register that im very sure has values (the register where i configure the modbus parameters), it would return ZERO, even when i tried to read the register that i just wrote into the reply was zero (I am sure that writing to the register was successful because i made the specific value that i wrote to the register a condition to turning a light on).
So, anyone knows why this could happen?? the Registers are Read/Write. I thought it could be that the scan time in the PLC is too short so i added delays but anything i read still gives zero back. ideas? can anyone help me with this?

  • The computer sees the airport signal but cannot connect to the internet

I have a imac g5 connected wirelessly to my base station & an airport express. The mac part connects to the internet using the network without any problem. My problem is that the pc portion (using Windows XP) of my imac will not connect to the internet using the wireless network. It shows a strong signal but no connectivity. One of the comments that comes up is that the network didn't assign a network address to the computer (I assume the PC portion). Any thoughts how I can get my computer to connect to the wireless network from the PC portion of my mac.
    many thanks.

Make sure your Firewall settings are correct. I'm going to share some of my settings in the PC area (please bear in mind that these IP addresses could differ from system to system)
My Windows Firewall is DISABLED. You could do the same temporary and see if it works. I use Zone Alarm Pro Firewall. Make sure in my Control Panel ==> Network connection status, your device shows Airport Express wireless device or router.
Depending in your Internet service provider and geographical zone the IP address could be different.
    Example:
    Zone Alarm Windows settings:
TRUSTED ZONES ==> Loopback Adapter 127.0.0.0.1
    PC IP address 192.169.1.3 (example)
    Gateway 192.169.1.254
    DHCP Server 10.0.1.1
    DNS 10.0.0.1
IN AIPORT EXTREME SETTINGS ( Make sure you are in your Imac side or Mac Os)
    Id 192.169.1.5
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.169.1.254
    Connection Automatic
Ethernet ==> Automatically (through Airport Utility)

  • MacBook Pro sees wireless networks but cannot join any. Connection timeout error

I have a MacBook Pro here that sees all wireless networks but cannot join any. It gives a connection timeout error with every one.
Internet access via ethernet cable works just fine.

It's not uncommon for you to "see" a great many networks, dozens even, yet you not be able to connect to any of them even if they are "open" (no lock icon). There may be a number of reasons for that, such as they're too weak for a reliable connection, or the router may limit connections to only specified devices.
There is only one way to achieve a reliable network connection, and that's for you to connect to your own wireless router. Even that doesn't work if its signal is too weak or if there are many competing wireless networks in your area.
If it's your own AirPort Base Station you're trying to use but can't, the latter could be the reason. The only way to mitigate the effects of wireless interference is to use 802.11n and 5 GHz whenever practicable. Even today you may only find one or two 5 GHz networks being used in an otherwise "crowded" area.

  • Color Lables on Shared Volumes

    Hi Everyone,
I have just found out that when a user changes the label color for a folder on a shared volume the changes are not reflected real-time. That's to say If I change the colour of a folder called Templates to "Red" another user on another mac who also sees the shared volume will not see the label color change made to the Templates folder. He/She will need to disconnect the shared volume and reconnect in order to see the change. Has anyone out there seen this problem? It's not 100% essential but would be good if there was a solution of some sort.
Just to add did not have this problem on my old mac server which was running 10.2.x our new server is running 10.4.8.
    Thanks,
    Kwong.

Hi Russell, Sorry been away for a few days. The InDesign documents are already on a shared volume and it wouldn't be feasible to save anywhere else as there is a particular hierarchy on the server as to where files are stored, so that all documents are within their relevant job folders, with images, image bank images & graphics etc stored on other shares. However all acl's are the same for all users, so this shouldn't be an issue. I still can't work out whether this is an Apple OS or an Adobe problem.

  • Why will spotlight only search my HD and not shared volumes?

spotlight gives me the choice to search shared volumes but will not produce any find results.
This is really causing us production issues.
    Thanks for any help

You can keep Spotlight from indexing a volume altogether by placing the Volume in the Privacy section of the Spotlight system preference. You would do this for instance, for your Backup volume, because otherwise Spotlight would find duplicates of all your data. Is it possible this is the case?
I have seen where the solution is to add the volume to privacy, to not index and then remove. This seems to make spotlight index the volume. If that does not work, here is an article that details how to manually have spotlight manually index an external drive:
    http://forum.multiplexapp.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=17
Notice the caveat in the article
There are some potential drawbacks to indexing network drives, especially those with large amounts of storage. First, if your drive holds tens or hundreds of thousands of files, indexing can be slow and tedious to the OS, and may affect your operating system's performance.
Might be wise to index during off hours.
    Cheers
    Michael
