Finding hyperlinks in dynamic text?

Im retrieving tweets, so i have dynamic text, but i the tweets occasionally contain hyperlinks. I know you can find the hyperlinks in text. But every technique i have tried has failed, i think its because there searching through an array and then converting that to a string, but im baffled and my mind is hurting :S
Well heres my code:
function userTimelineResult(e:TwitterEvent):void
          for (var i in e.data)
                    twitterStatus = e.data[i];
                    trace("user tweets",twitterStatus.text);
                    var t:TextField = new TextField();// create a new text field
                    t.htmlText = twitterStatus.text
                    t.textColor = 0x000000;// set the text color
                    t.multiline = true;// allow it to be multiline
                    t.wordWrap = true;// allow it to have a word wrap
                    t.autoSize = "left";// set the autosize to left
                    t.width = 300;// give it a width of 300,
                    t.height = 30;// height values
                    t.x = 650 - 300;// x value
                    t.y = neextY;
                    neextY +=  t.height + 10;
                    addChild(t);

I take it you are using Flash as the methods have no type descriptors.
function userTimelineResult(e:TwitterEvent):void{
    for (var i in e.data){
        twitterStatus = e.data[i];
        trace("user tweets",twitterStatus.text);
        var t:TextField = new TextField();// create a new text field
        t.htmlText = twitterStatus.text
        if(hasHyperlinks(twitterStatus.text)){
            //do something here if it has hyperlinks
            //code
        }else{
            //text only
        t.textColor = 0x000000;// set the text color
        t.multiline = true;// allow it to be multiline
        t.wordWrap = true;// allow it to have a word wrap
        t.autoSize = "left";// set the autosize to left
        t.width = 300;// give it a width of 300,
        t.height = 30;// height values
        t.x = 650 - 300;// x value
        t.y = neextY;
        neextY +=  t.height + 10;
        addChild(t);
function hasHyperlinks(text:String):Boolean{
     return (text.indexOf('<a') >= 0 && text.indexOf('</a>') >= 0);

  • Problems with hyperlinks in dynamic text

    Hi,
    I have a dynamic textbox on the 3rd level of a flash movie. The textbox has some hyperlinks for which I used this AS2 code as a test:
    textbox.html = true;
    textbox.htmlText = "<a href=' http://www.adobe.com' target='_blank'>Adobe</a>";
    When I test the scene it works well on all levels apart from the root level. When I test the whole movie, the link does not respond. On rollover the mouse converts into a text cursor, and I have to click several times, until randomly a hand comes up and the link opens. I don't understand why on all sublevels (in the movieclips), the link works perfectly (on rollover mouse becomes hand and click loads URL int browser), but not on the root level. Btw, I placed the movie with the textbox on top, so there is no layer above that in the root timeline. Please help!!!
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your response dalcde. However, in my dynamic textbox I have a list with more than 50 different items with different links, and using the HTML tag seems more convenient.
    I experimented a bit and found out what causes the problem:
    The parent movie clip of the movie clip with the textbox has a mirrored reflection attached to it, for which I use this code:
    import flash.display.*;//importing the bitmap class
    var bmd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(860, 330);//definition of a variable for the target bitmap and assigning values
    link_ref.attachBitmap(bmd, 1);//attaches target bitmap to movie clip (reflection)
    link_ref.setMask(link_mask);//sets mask over movie clip (reflection)
    this.onEnterFrame = function()
        bmd.draw(link_contents);
    When I switch that off, the link works fine when testing the movie. This is a bit weired cause when I test the scene with the reflection (2nd level after root) the link works fine. The problem only occurs when I test the movie (level 1). Anyways, switching off the reflection is obviously not an option as all the sites on my website have reflections. Is there a workaround to this? I was never aware that the bitmap class could interfere with hyperlinks.
    Thanks.

  • Issue with visibiliy of dynamic text and hyperlinks

    Hi everyone,
    It's been a while since I've build a Flash site and a I'm finding a out a lot has changed.
    I'm building a simple site with some pictures, text and the 5 last posts from Twitter.
    This last one is not working out that well.
    First of all:
    The outputed data from Twitter is displayed into a dynamic text field which is working fine when I test the movie in Flash, but as soon as I upload it to my server the text is not visible.
    Flash already told me that I need to enclose my font in the movie (that's new for me) and I did that using the button in the properties windows.
    But it still won't work.
    I recreated the Twitter reader in a empty document to isolate it from my website during the troubleshooting.
    Here's the AS I'm using:
    var loadXML:XML = new XML();
        loadXML.ignoreWhite = true;
        loadXML.onLoad = processXML;
        loadXML.load("twitter.php"); //used when swf in placed on server
        loadXML.load("");
        function processXML(loaded:Boolean)
            if(loaded)
                var node = this.firstChild;
                tweet_1.text = node.childNodes[0].childNodes[2].firstChild;
                tweet_2.text = node.childNodes[1].childNodes[2].firstChild;
                tweet_3.text = node.childNodes[2].childNodes[2].firstChild;
                tweet_4.text = node.childNodes[3].childNodes[2].firstChild;
                var follower_count = node.childNodes[9].childNodes[11].childNodes[9].firstChild;// Creates variable
                trace(follower_count); //loads variable into output
                follower_count_txt.text = follower_count;// show follower count in text box
            else
                error_txt.text = "Error loading XML file";
                        for (i=0; i<follower_count; i++)
                            _root.attachMovie("tweep_mc", "tweep"+i+"_mc", i);
                            _root["tweep"+i+"_mc"]._x = 150 + random(500);
                            _root["tweep"+i+"_mc"]._y = 150 + random(500);
                            trace(i);
                        trace(i);
        follow_btn.onRelease = function()
            getURL("");
    facebook_btn.onRelease = function()
            getURL("");
    stop();
    Right here you can see the output of it on the server.
    The second issue:
    The items posted to Twitter will simply always contain pictures which Twitter posts as hyperlinks.
    Is there a way to make those hyperlinks function in my dynamic text field?
    Hope you guys can help me out!
    Thanks in advance!!
    Karim

    Ok.. After some resarch I find out the guy who created this made use of the Twitter API.. Since I don't know how to do that and
    can't find straight answers that's not an option for me...
    Althought...
    What I forgot to mention in the first post:
    This is what the beginning of actionscript is actually looking like right now and why it is working offline:
    var loadXML:XML = new XML();
        loadXML.ignoreWhite = true;
        loadXML.onLoad = processXML;
        loadXML.load("http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.xml?screen_name=karimbizid2");
    I'm getting the data direct from the Twitter server.
    This procedure does'nt neceserly need a PHP file to store the XML, right?
    I'm guessing it's just a visual issue why the text isn't showing.

  • Showing RSS feed in Dynamic Text box (with hyperlink)

    Hi all -
    I am currently trying to pull RSS data into a project for my first time and am trying to get 3 (potentially 4) boxes filled with rss data that will be updated. So far, I am going with Actionscript 3. So far I have the code below, but it puts data in a listbox. What is the easiest way to put the data in three dynamic text boxes inside a movie clip, so I have one for the title, one for description and one for link (shown as 'read more' text but a link using the url from the rss value)?
    I am really banging my head against the wall on this one and want to get it sorted asap, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I have also attached an image to show what I am trying to do:
    I also want to know if it's possible to show rss values only if they exist. For example, my xml feed currently only has 3 items that change, and i will be assigning these to boxes, but is it possible to display a fourth if it exists, and if it doesn't it just shows the first?
    My code so far:
    var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoaded);
    var xml:XML;
    function onLoaded(e:Event):void
        xml = new XML(e.target.data);
        var il:XMLList = xml.channel.item.description};
        trace(il[1]);
             lb.addItem({data:il.description.text()
                                label:il.title.text()}):
    loader.load(new URLRequest("http://www.rssfeedhere.xml"));

    you would create a movieclip (exported for actionscript and class = rssItem) with 3 textfields and the display shown in your message and use something like:
    var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoaded);
    var xml:XML;
    function onLoaded(e:Event):void
        xml = new XML(e.target.data);
        var il:XMLList = xml.channel.item.description};
        for(var i:uint=0;i<il.length();i++){
            var mc:rssItem = new rssItem();
            addChild(mc);
            mc.x = 300*i%2;
            mc.y = 300*Math.floor(i/2);
            mc.titleTF.text = il[i].title.text();
            mc.descriptionTF.text = il[i].description.text();
            mc.readmoreTF.text = ?
    loader.load(new URLRequest(http://www.rssfeedhere.xml));

  • Using Dynamic Text to tell a Hyperlink where to go.

    So I am having a little trouble on my site, and this community seems like a good place to go for help, and I am sure someone out here can help me.
    I have a webpage that uses dynamic text and images, and it serves as my user profile page. I know the database and all of that stuff is set up correctly because all of the dynamic text shows up as it should.
    Here is the problem I am having. I have an area where a user will be able to view files he has uploaded, and click on the name of a file to view it.
    The way I have it set up, is the clickable text is dynamic text from the server, called uploadname1. I want to make this text into a link, that sends them to the file stored as fileupload1.
    Here is my code that I thought should do it.
    "<a href="<?php echo $row_Recordset1['fileupload1']; ?>"/><?php echo $row_Recordset1['uploadname1']; ?></a>" (minus the quotes of course)
    The text underlines and changes the color as it should, but it is not clickable. Can someone out there help me?

  • Dynamic Text in a JTextPane

    Dear All,
    I would like to ask you if it is somehow feasible to create dynamic text into a JTextArea/JTextPane and/or JEditorPane. To be more specific, by the term dynamic text,
    I mean to have the opportunity to specify that some of the words contained in the JTextArea have an action (like a hyperlink let's say).
    I searched the forum but I did not find any similar topics neither answers concerning this issue. The only thing I found similar to this was that by using a JEditorPane one
    can employ the HTML language to creat some hyperlinks, but even in this case how will I be able to find out which word contained in the JEditorPane triggered which
    HyperLinkEvent? Is there a solution or a much easier way to accomplish this task? I would really appreciate it if some exemplary code could also be provided.
    I totally respect you gurus and count on you!
    Thank you in advance for your attention!
    Best Regards,
    JIM

    but even in this case how will I be able to find out which word contained in the JEditorPane triggered which HyperLinkEvent?
    Read the JEditorPane API. It has an example of writing a HyperlinkListener.

  • Displaying the result of a calculation in a dynamic text box

    Hi folks,
    I'm having a very minor issue here (operator error, I'm sure ). With the help of some folks here, I've created a series of calculations, and I've got that part down. Now, I just need it to show up in the movie.
    I've created the dynamic text box in Flash (CS3), but when I hit test, it won't show up.
    After all the calculations, I should have a figure that I call totalmoney. My dynamic text box is called total. The user doesn't need to hit anything for it to appear. It just appears as part of the movie.
    Here's my code:
    stop();
    var startDate:Date = new Date(2010,0,12);  // use your  startyear, startmonth, startdate in the new Date() parameters.
    var  currentDate:Date = new Date();  // assuming user's clock is correct and in your  timezone.  else use server date/time.
    var numberOfSeconds:Number =  (currentDate.getTime()-startDate.getTime())/1000;
    var interest:Number =  (numberOfSeconds*0.74356);
    var totalmoney:Number =  (interest+15,000,000);
    function displaytotal(evt:TextEvent):void {
         total.text = "totalmoney";
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Napo

    You didn't have to bury any of the calculations in the function--leaving it as you had it is better.  They could remain where they a=werew, and you'll probably find you want them outside it if you have other plans for using them.  If left inside, they only have scope inside.  In the programming world, it's good to think of functions as things that do one thing and one thing only (though it isn't often practiced that way)--it's called modular design.
    When you place an event as an argument for a function, it typically means that there is an event listener that initiates the call to the function.  If you work with buttons you'll see what I mean.  But if the plan is to create your own call to a function when you desire it as such, not have it driven by an event listener, then you don't need to pass any event to it, though you may pass some other type of variable to it if need be.
    For instance, what you have now will call the function without an argument because the function has the value built into its code....
    displaytotal();
    But you could also make the function a little more generic and set it up to recieve the value instead as an argument...
    function displaytotal(amt:Number):void {
         total.text = String(amt); // an earlier error of mine
    displaytotal(totalmoney);
    That would make your function a little more useful.  Now it could be used to display other Number variables as well.
    // my earlier error was that a textfield displays text, so you need to convert the Number value to s String.
    Hope I'm not confusing you.

  • EDGE and HTML dynamic text in a "box" with scroll bar

    I'm new to EDGE, a win7pro master collection cs5.5 suite owner. I'm mainly in the Film/Video post production field (mostly AE, PPro, Pshop, IA) but have been branching into web design the last couple of years.  I use Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash. While I'm a expert user with all the Film/video apps, I would say I only have intermediate ability with the web apps. While I understand a lot of programing logic bulding blocks I'm not a coder.
    So since we're told "flash is dead",  my interest in Edge is to try to do some of the things that I can currently do in flash in  EDGE. I was excited when Edge first came out but lost interest when it became obvious that Adobe was not going to offer Edge and Muse to "suite owners" but only in their force feeding of the "Cloud". Better known as the "golden goose" for adobe stockholders and a never ending perpetual hole in the pocket for users. Anyway....
    I spent the last couple of days doing some of the tuts and messing with the UI. It's matured a lot since I was here last.
    I've been working on a flash site for a sports team where one of the pages is a player profile page where college recuriters and other interested parties can view recuriting relavent info/stats about players. This is how it works. While on the "Team" page a users clicks on  a button labled "Player Profiles" . (Animation) A "page" flies in and unfurls from the upper right corner (3d page flips effect created in AE played by flash as a frame SEQ). Once it lands filling most of the center of the screen there is a bright flash. As the brightness fades we see the "page" is a bordered box with a BG image of a ball field(End). (Animation) from behind the border in fly small pictures (player head shots with name and jersey number). They stream in and form a circle like a wagon train and the team logo zooms up from infinity to the center of the circle(End). As the user mouses over a player's pic it zooms up a little and gets brighter (like mouseover image nav thumbs for a image slider). If the user clicks on a player's head shot it flips over and scales up to become a text box with a scrollbar. The content of the box is a mix of images, static and dynamic text fields populated from data in an "player info data base" XML file, and some hyperlinks. It's all kept updated dynamicaly with current stats, info and images from the XML file. There is also a "PDF" button that allows the user to open/save/print a PDF of the player's profile (the PDF's are static files for now but the choice of which pdf to retrive is dynamicaly supplied via the XML file.
    So.... Is Edge now able to do something like this?  Would it need to be a collection of small animations? could these be "assembled" and connected as an asset in dreamweaver ?
    I thought I would approach this from the end (ie click on an image and display a box with dynamic TEXT fileds. ) since that is the most important part, ie displaying the dynamicaly updated profile info.  Sooooo....
    Can Edge display a scrolling text box with Images, static text, and html dynamic text in it??

  • Using dynamic text in Flash Builder

    Hi,
    I'm trying to get some dynamic text to my web page. The text is readed from .txt file
    I use AS script which i was using in a project I made with Flash Pro and now i try to implement it in Flash Builder project
    The script look like this:
    var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest("design_1.txt");
    var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    function textLoaded(event:Event):void
    design.text = loader.data;
    loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, textLoaded);
    loader.load(req);
    So first I made a project with Flash Catalyst and in there I created an area text element. Then I imported the project to Flash Builder and put the AS script in the <Script> section and gave the <RichText> an id="design".  The text is just simple text and formatting happens in richtext element.
    So, when i try to compile the FB project it give me and parse error "undefined property error req", "undefined property error loader" etc.
    So should i alter the AS script for FB or is there something else wrong? I tried to google how to use dynamic text in FB but couldn't find any easytyutorials. I'm mostly a desginer so coding isn't my speciality. But thanks for help!

    Hi Amy,
    You can customize 'New class' generation under Preferences->Editors->Flash
    Builder->FileTemplates->Action Script->New ActionScript class.
    Currently there are no template variables available constructors. But you
    can customize it as following,
    $
    ${import_declaration}
    $ {
      public function ${class_name}() {

  • Help with delivering dynamic text through an external file, through XML?

    I'm struggling to find the best way to deliver dynamic text
    from an external file, through XML, to a Flash file.
    I use small Flash pieces to deliver multiple sets of content
    through a single .swf file. An example is here:
    http://www.esi-intl.com/public/government/federal.asp
    In the .swf file at the bottom, I'm using a three-scene .fla
    file. I'm putting the actionScript in the Actions layer atop each
    frame. Example:
    stop ();
    loadVarsText = new LoadVars();
    loadVarsText.load("fedNews.txt");
    //assign a function which fires when the data is loaded:
    loadVarsText.onLoad = function(success) {
    if (success) {
    trace("done loading");
    //Now that we know the data is loaded,
    //set the text content of the Text Field
    //with the instance name "scroller" equal to the
    //contents of the variable
    scroller.html=true;
    scroller.htmlText = this.var1;
    } else {
    trace("not loaded");
    In that .txt file, I'm putting the information like this:
    var1=<font face="tahoma,verdana,sans-serif" size="11px"
    color="#000000"><b><a href='
    http://www.esi-intl.com/public/classroomtraining/dau.asp'>DAU
    Grants ESI Course CON353
    Equivalency</a></b><br>Advanced Business Solution
    in Contracting (CON 353) is an equivalency for DAU's CON 3535
    course, Advanced Business Solutions for Mission Support. <a
    href='
    http://www.esi-intl.com/public/classroomtraining/dau.asp'><U><font
    color="#996633">Continue</font></U></a></font>
    So much of this is pick-ups from what I've researched in
    Google. I'm looking for a way I can feel more confident in my code,
    and also have that code follow CSS.
    Lastly, I recognize the problems in XML with using single
    quotes / double quotes, and the & symbol. This is one of my
    largest time sucks, and I'd like to find a better way to do this.
    Thank you

    Hi,
    Did you ever find a resolution to this? I'm having a similar
    issue that I can't seem to get multiline dynamic text working in
    CS3.
    The font is embedded but it just displays the first line, and
    then a blank. I'm sure this worked fine in Flash MX.

  • Dynamic Text in Flash/Image

    Hi All,
    I cant find any simple tutorials, can anyone help me and
    explain how to very simply, display one variable of text from a
    database as flash format (or a type of dynamic image)?
    Using CS3, and ColdFusion. I'm playing games with it and
    think i'm just name the variable wrong either in a flash file or cf
    page. But anyway, any simple method to dynamically display text as
    an image will work.... please help.
    Thx,
    Mike

    probably the simplest way will be passing your text to your
    flash movie
    as the movie url's query string variable (in the
    [object]/[embed] html
    tags). inside the flash movie set a dynamic text box to
    display the
    passed variable:
    if you google "pass variable to flash" you will see a lot of
    examples of
    code involved. just make sure your flash movie is large
    enough to
    display all passed text, and the passed text is url-encoded.

  • Dynamic Text Styling

    I am using a dynamic text field with some text inside it. I
    would like to make some headings within the text BOLD and a
    different Colour then the rest of the text. Is this possible? I am
    also scrolling the text field using the generic scroll bar.
    Thank You.

    There is an article about support for CSS inside a Flash
    movie here:
    http://www.whatdoiknow.org/archives/001181.shtml
    It's for MX2004, but I'm sure some of it will still be
    relevant. You might also search the Flash Help for "CSS" and see if
    you can find something.

  • Dynamic text box problems

    I have created a dynamic text box and an input text box.
    I have produced code that replicates whatever is typed in the
    input box to display in the dynamic box along with a date and time
    stamp once a button is clicked.
    This all works fine, except for the sizes of the fonts. for
    both boxes, i selected font size 10 . The input box is fine,
    however the dynamic box text is huge.
    When i make the dynamic text font smaller, it fits in fine,
    but the input text that is inserted into the dynamic text box comes
    in too big. If i make the input text box font smaller it is
    unreadable when typing it in.
    any soultion to how to make my font consistent. I am assumin
    the problem is because both the text boxes are different sizes,
    however i don't know how to resolve the issue.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Laura

    hi laura
    i think the problem it's in the targetPath "
    mainClip.newspaper_mc.newinstructions.text =
    lu.welcome[langIdx];".
    chech if you have mistype the instance names of your
    movieClip and rewrite it or in the Actions panel select the path "
    mainClip.newspaper_mc.newinstructions" and click the button
    "Insert Target Path" this will open a popup with a tree of your
    MC's on the stage, so you can browse and find the textfield. i hope
    i helped you if not let me know!

  • Dynamic text (Titles/Section titles)

    Hi,
    I'm diving into Keynote for the first time and am struggling with trying to figure out how to create dynamic text within my masters.
    I'd like to be able to have the user enter the title of the presentation on their title slide (using the title master) and then have that title propagate through the other slides in the footer of the section/content slides as meta data.
    Is there a solution for how to do this? Essentially, I just need to flag the text box with a variable and then repurpose that variable in a differently styled text box on other slides.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Keynote and PowerPoint are both presentation packages; however, they're not identical, and offer different feature sets. If you can't live without a feature that PPT offers but Keynote doesn't, use PPT. However, in my experience most of the things that PPT will do can be done in Keynote - it's just a matter of figuring out how.
    I've been using Keynote (various versions) for several years, after having used PPT for several years. Yes, I've found things that Keynote didn't do that I was used to being able to do in PPT, but the only one that I couldn't find a workaround for was motion-path animation, and it appeared as a Build option ("Action") in Keynote '08.
    If there is a feature you would like to see in Keynote, you can always use the "Provide Keynote Feedback" link in the "Keynote" menu to send you ideas to Apple. There's no guarantee that your feature will appear, but that's the way to let Apple know that you would like to see something changed.
    As for your original problem, one simple way to propogate the title information in the footers of the other slides is to add a small text box to the master(s) used for the other slides and copy the title into it. No, it's not automatic, and if you change the title you must also change the text box on the master(s), but it's a workaround.
    There is definitely a non-flat learning curve associated with the transition from PPT to Keynote, but once you pick up some familiarity with Keynote, you may find it's much more intuitive to use.

  • Dynamic Text Boxes / Resizing text boxes

    I have a site with a dynamic text box that I have initialized
    (I'm not sure that that is the correct term) at the beginning with:
    myText = new LoadVars();
    myText.onLoad = function()
    { textBox_txt.htmlText = this.content;
    myText.load("text/bio.txt");
    stop();
    Then I have just used a text box throughout with the same
    instance name, although sometimes I have it on a new keyframe. I
    assumed I could just keep loading text into it on different frames
    with:
    stop();
    myText.load("text/performances.txt");
    This appears to be working, except that sometimes it seems to
    be confused and the text box on a certain frame has the wrong text
    in it. Do I have to initialize one for each frame in order for them
    to display the right code? What could be causing it to load another
    text file if it's frame action is telling it to load something
    else? It seems unnecessary to have to re-initialize it for a new
    text box instance in every new frame, but is that the way it has to
    be done?
    Also, I'm not clear on resizing text boxes. It seems like if
    I use the width and height numbers to resize this text box on
    different pages then it changes the size of the text inside, and
    the scroll bar (the UIScrollbar) is a little squishy looking
    sometimes. How does this work?
    Thanks for any help.

    You will find it much better to create a new LoadVars object
    for each of the frames, just call them myText1 myText2 etc.
    The name of the text box instance in this case is irrelevant
    but best practice would be to give them individual names.
    As for the stretching effect use setSize() for UI
    components.
