Finit-ARC: boot your system in 4 seconds

Hi people! I present the reimplementation of FAST-INIT for Archlinux.
Fast-init is an original init system written in C from Xandros Linux. I did a reimplementation of fast-init and I called it FINIT-ARC.
Finit-arc can works with all computers and all filesystem types. With it and static kernel I can boot my system in about 3,5 seconds from grub to console login.
X for me take only 5 seconds. Then in 8 seconds I'm fully operative on my desktop.
Installation
Actually finit-arc it's in BETA version and it is present in AUR.
1 - http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25159
FOR TESTERS finit-arc-git is avaiable on AUR
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26314
2 - Insert init=/sbin/finit-arc as kernel parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst
3 - After installation you must do a boot with traditional init system of Archlinux, and after you can boot with finit-arc. The first boot could be slow.
Important!
Finit-arc doesn't support UUIDs. Then you must replace UUIDs with /dev/sdx devices in /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab.
Known Problems
1) Error width pcspkr on kernel -ARCH
do !pcspkr into MODULES of rc.conf
2) Wrong clock time
3) DBUS or other daemon don't start
Before start finit-arc you must do a boot with traditional Archlinux init system
4) Fam and portmap don't stop
You can use GAMIN instead fam
5) Network doesn't work
Insert into MODULES your ethernet module in the first position. Insert into DAEMONS your network daemon (network or net-profiles) in the latest position.
Logging finit-arc with bootchart
Edit /sbin/bootchartd and replace the line init="/sbin/init" with init="/sbin/finit-arc"
Add on your kernel line init=/sbin/bootchartd as parameter (remove init=/sbin/finit-arc)
Bug reports and testers are welcome

ohhhhhhhh yeaah |-.-|
yet another kernel panic
Kinit: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) read only
Finit-ARC - beta 0.2
finit-arc[1] general protection ip:7fd5a36c0706 sp: 7fffabbb67e8 error:0 in libc-2.9.50[7fd5a3646000+14a000]
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I install via yaourt finit-arc, after modified my /boot/grub/menu.lst adding the second entry like this:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/a20131af-7d82-4b29-b0b8-6d23022659c6 ro vga=795
initrd /kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux without UUID
title Arch Linux with FINIT-ARC
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda9 ro init=/sbin/finit-arc vga=795
initrd /kernel26.img
Entry 0 for my normal boot, and entry 1 for finit-arc.
Next delete all UUID from menu.lst and fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/sda9 / ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda10 /home ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda7 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda8 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda6 /mnt/data ext4 defaults 0 2
# USB en virtualbox
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=108,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0664 0 0
and editing /etc/finittab to start kdm:
#Command that you want execute after boot
#uncomment it for X login
#you must set YOURUSERNAME
#level:/bin/su YOURUSERNAME -l -c "/bin/bash --login -c xinit >/dev/null 2>&1"
#level:/usr/sbin/gdm --nodaemon
#level:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
level:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
#level:/usr/bin/slim
After all, reboot my system with the entry 0 from grub and after reboot with entry 1...
Sorry to repeat, but excuse my poor English

  • A secondary battery was not detected, but your system supports a second battery.

    Hi,
I have read this while testing my battery with HP tools dignostics:
Secondary Battery: a battery was not detected, but your system supports a second battery. You may want to purchase a second battery to extend your battery life between charges
What is meant with your system supports a second battery?
I think this 'your system supports a second battery' should have been said if my computer supported  two batteries insereted  simulataneously.
However, if this 'your system supports a second battery.' only means if the first battery got to its critical level, then I could shut down my computer, and then replace it with the second one which is fully charged.
As a result, I would be saying that my system supports a second battery, a third, fourth, fifth, and so on.  I don't need to say my system supports a second battery.

    Thanks a lot,
Then, for my laptop which only supports to insert on battery at the same time.  Then as long as the secondray battery will not be inserted along with the primary battery at the same time, then my system and my computer don't support secondary battery. However, they support only one battery inserted. As a result,   They wouldn't have said(written) a tip says during the battery testing   'secondary battery was not deteced, but your system supports a second battery.'
that they should have written system supports a second battery, a third, fourth, fifth, and so on which can be inserted instead of your inserted empty primary battery.
I really don't find any a docking station port on the bottom of my laptop. Do you think that there are some HP models can support two batteries to be inserted at the same time?

  • Does a partition for Boot Camp slow down your system?

I'm gonna make a partition on my disk for bootcamp. Does adding a partition slow down your system when using Mac OS? I assume boot camp assistant creates a partition wherever there is enough required free space. And if this free space is in the middle of the disk, doesn't the system have to skip back and forth over the partition to access data?
Or does boot camp assistant create the partition at the end of the disk?
    Thanks for your replies.

Boot Camp partition is generally created at the end of the disk so to speak. While the partition is created, files are moved and arranged so that there is a contiguous space for the partition.
NO it does not affect the OSx performance at all as long as you have enough free space in the OSx partition for it to perform satisfactorily.

  • Firefox is OPEN and working fine, but when I click a link in Thunderbird I get 'Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.'

If I click a link on my desktop or in any other program (while Firefox is open and running), I get this message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." There's about a billion links for this if you Google it, but they all say that Firefox wasn't shut down properly. (OK, maybe not ALL of them, but if the needle is in that haystack, I haven't yet found it.) That's not the issue in my case since I haven't shut FF down at all.

This began to happen to me when I tried to run two separate profiles simultaneously on the same installation of firefox with -no-remote

  • Lombard won't boot off System disc

    Hi,
I have a problem that I wonder if any of you mac experts can help me with.
My problem is the computer will not boot from a system disc (any system disc) from the CD drive.
I have a Lombard Powerbook that has been running OS 8.6 (I know, I am way behind !) 192 mg RAM (64 in the lower, 128 in the upper from OWC), 4 Gb Hard drive.
The computer runs great in 8.6 - seldom crashes - however, all I have been mainly using it for is word processing.
When I try to load from any OS system disc (not the original Lombard disc, but any OS disc - 8.5, 9.2, Panther) holding down the C key, the CD drive runs for approximately 20 seconds, then stops, and on the screen I get a picture of a blank folder with a question mark - the Lombard is not reading the CD drive for some reason and won't boot from it. After a short wait OS 8.6 loads from the Hard drive.
I bought the computer on e-bay 4 years ago, and this has always been a problem - I just have been to busy in the past to deal with it.
Is there a simple command other than holding down the C key when restarting that will safely (remember I am a novice) allow me to bypass the hard drive and boot from the CD drive ?
I have done the following, which have all been unsuccessful at resolving this problem, and am out of ideas.
I have taken out all virus software from the system folder, cancelled all non-OS extensions and made sure the password extension is turned off.
    I have zapped the PRAM.
I have taken out the (upper) RAM chip to be sure that it wasn't the problem - no difference.
Chosen the CD drive in the Startup Control Panel.
Checked to see if the system and finder are locked - they're not.
The CD drive may be the problem, but it runs software CDs fine, and it is the correct drive for the Lombard.
Any suggestions ? I would appreciate any ideas that people have.
    Thanks.
    Steve
Powerbook Lombard   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    Steve,
You have performed a lot of troubleshooting which is helpful. There are several causes for a no-boot to CD...
    1. Corrupted PRAM: You have addressed that.
    2. Peripheral/external device preventing boot: Disconnect ALL peripherals.
    3. Damaged or incorrect CD: The Lombard will not boot any CD earlier than OS 8.6, so the original Powerbook G3 Series Bronze Keyboard CD (has OS 8.6) or a retail MacOS 8.6 CD or newer will boot the Lombard. If you have a machine-specific OS 8.6 > 9.2.1 CD that has a computer name on it like iMac, iBook, Power Mac, etc, it will not boot your Lombard (there are a few exceptions.
Assuming you have no other problems, the Panther/10.3.x CD should boot unless you tried with only 64MB in the lower slot...then it may not boot...a Jaguar CD will, but not sure about Panther.
    4. Bad drive: I don't know if an optical drive that performs normally when running an OS from the HD can also have the problem of not booting a CD. If you can find another Lombard or Pismo, swap drives and test.
    5. The options for booting to a CD on the Lombard are the 'c' key, selecting the volume in the Startup Disk control panel, or the 'delete-option-command-shift' keys on restart...this forces a bypass of the HD.
    6. It doesn't matter what is on the HD when trying to boot a CD; it can have a working OS or it can be empty.
Try this: If you have a supported CD, put the CD in the drive and shut down (not restart). Now press the power button and hold down the four keys for a PRAM reset...command-option-R-P...wait for two startup chimes, release the keys and immediately press the 'c' key.

  • Acrobat X Pro: Check for Updates Error 1007 Updates have been disabled by your system policy

Because of another Acrobat problem (I won't go into here), today I uninstalled Acrobat Pro 10.1.9 and re-installed Acrobat 10.0.0. I thought I could get back to 10.1.9 by selecting "Check for Updates" after installation. My system is Win7x64 and I'm running as a named user with Administrator rights on a machine that is not part of domain.
When I select "Check for Updates", I receive a window titled "Adobe Acrobat Updater" that says "Update failed Updates have been disabled by your system policy. Error: 1007 <Close>" About ten seconds later, Acrobat X terminates, leaving this window hanging around.
What do I do to enable checking for updates?

Thanks Bill@VT and LeoAdobeX. It's still not working though.
Over the last few days, Windows System Restore says I have done 4 (four) Remove/Install Pairs. I tried the helpful cleaner you suggested. I knew I probably had some Acrobat9 cruft, so I ran the Acrobat9 and Reader9 cleaners, then the AcrobatX cleaner (I never had ReaderX). I also uninstalled absolutely every Adobe program from my system: Flash Player (three versions), iFilter, Adobe AIR, Amazon Music Importer (relies on Adobe AIR).
I tried it both as 10.0.0, and installing 10.0.0 and then the 10.1.9 MSP you pointed me to at the "update link" above. I installed as "Trial" mostly, but once with my registration key.
Starting up Acrobat X still fails epically. Also, every time I've looked, it hasn't solved the "other Acrobat problem" that initiated all of this.
The most that I've received from Acrobat X today is the splash screen came up once. Only once. Even after a restart of Windows 7, launching AcrobatX from the Start Menu, Desktop or even directly from the EXE under "Program Files (x86) does nothing. I thought it might just be slow the last time, so I took a 15 minute coffee break after attempting to launch. Nothing.
Ergo, I am looking at Windows System Restore. I miss two days of not being able to read PDF's even if the "other Acrobat problem" remains.
However, I got a whiff that I have another problem headed my way. I bought update version of Acrobat9 and AcrobatX. I've now wiped all traces of Acrobat9 (and will shortly do another wipe of AcrobatX). The Cleaner log reports "** Info : Installed product not found for upgrade code". The MyAdobe website has all my install codes back to Acrobat4, but I'm not sure I could locate my Adobe 4 CDROM or the intervening CDROM's that would be required to source me back to a full version (maybe Acrobat6?).
As I understand it, System Restore will do many things but not actually install the program files that I've been writing and deleting from my disk over the last two days. So, I'm going to have to do some install of AcrobatX after I do the System Restore and I now have little hope that even that installation will work to "just put things back the way they were".
Is AcrobatX supported on Windows7x64 Ultimate? Is there some place to track down what may be the "issues due to the 64-bit system"?
I have checked the policies under Control Panel->Administrator and there is more to check there. My account is a member of Administrators, which I would think would give me the rights to do just about anything, but when I click on the "Local Security Policy" shortcut, I get a "Group Policy Error: Failed to open the Group Policy Object on this computer. You may not have the appropriate rights. <Close> Details: Unspecified error". I'll chase this down if the System Restore does not make this error go away, but this part is clearly not a problem with Adobe software. All of the Other Admin/MMC Tools like Computer Management open fine.
Thank you very much for the responses. I found them to be very helpful but I still feel I've got a big problem ahead.

  • Flashplugin freezing your system? Maybe it's not what it seems...

I'm posting this detective story in this subforum because the issue discussed seems to be happening mostly with laptops.
    The symptoms:
You are happily surfing the internet with your laptop when you decide to watch a flash video. After some minutes, your nightmare begins: suddenly the video playback becomes choppy, your browser slows down and the whole system becomes painfully slow and unresponsive. You check cpu usage and it seems that both firefox and flashplugin are wreaking havoc. You close/kill the processes but to no avail. It seems as if flashplugin is haunting your laptop from beyond the grave, leaving you no other option but to reboot.
You then start a pilgrimage through Google and linux forums to seek a solution, but none of the answers provided  seem to fix this annoying behavior. It turns out that something more subtle is going on...
    The real deal:
Flashplugin is not the cause of your problem, it's just the trigger. I came across this revelation while gzipping several dozens of big (4Gig+) files: exactly the same behavior emerged and flashplugin had nothing to do with it.
A hunch told me to check the cpu behaviour and after running "cpufreq-info" I find out the real problem:
    analyzing CPU 1:
    driver: acpi-cpufreq
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0 1
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 1
    maximum transition latency: 10.0 us.
    hardware limits: 800 MHz - 2.20 GHz
available frequency steps: 2.20 GHz, 2.20 GHz, 1.60 GHz, 1.20 GHz, 800 MHz
    available cpufreq governors: ondemand, performance
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 800 MHz.
The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use
    within this range.
current CPU frequency is 800 MHz.
Notice the cpu stuck at the lowest frequency?
It seems that there is some widespread problem in linux with some combinations of hardware and kernel/cpufreq-utils that causes the cpu-throtling to misbehave whenever the cpu is subject to some stress. As soon as the cpu usage goes 100% for some prolonged period of time, the cpu gets stuck at the the lowest frequency and any cpufreq command issued trying to fix it will be ignored by the system.
    The solution:
Until this gets fixed in kernel26 and/or cpufreq-utils, there is a simple workaround to the problem:
Issuing the following command will ease the pain while your system is running:
    echo 1 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/ignore_ppc
(You might need to restart whatever cpu-throttling daemon you are using, and you might also need to do some easy voodoo with cpufreq-set to reset the cpu maximum frequency and/or governor.)
To fix it permanently, add this boot parameter to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst :
    processor.ignore_ppc=1
    Final considerations:
While researching this problem in different forums, I found out that a lot of users are incorrectly blaming flashplugin and don't know what's really going on with their cpus. For average/everyday computer usage, flash video is probably the only thing that will subject the cpu to a 100% usage for enough time to trigger the problem; therefore causing the incorrect diagnostic and subsequent frustration.
I'm pretty sure that this is not a hardware problem, as it has been reported in different laptop models. Although it does seem to be more frequent in Dell laptops.
I know that my cpu-throtling used to be fine some time ago, I'm sure because is one of the first things I always make sure to set it up correctly the first time I install linux on a new laptop. Sadly, I can't pinpoint the exact version change of kernel26 and/or cpufreq-utils that started this whole mess. I took me quite time to narrow down the problem and rule out flashplugin or firefox as the causes.
If you check with Google, it seems that this issue is not only limited to Archlinux, several other distros are experiencing the same problem. For us, Archers, the bug (or something quite similar) is reported already here.
One final call: if you happen to suffer this issue and you thought it was a case of flashplugin misbehavior, please take some time to report or confirm the cpu-throttling bug. It seems to be really widespread but poorly reported, and without proper understanding of the large number of users suffering it, it will not be fixed as soon as is desirable.
Something related to cpu-throtling is awry in cpufreq-utils or kernel26 , and without your support it will pass unnoticed and blame will fall unto poor flashplugin.
    Cheers

Thanks a lot for this detailled post. I already fixed the issue on my laptop in july, but it's good to spread the word.
    Regards

  • "you need to restart your system" message

    Hi
I need some serious help here....It all started a while after installing 10.4.8. At first the system would just crash randomly, i.e. I'd get the spinning ball but I couldn't trace it back to any specific task, it was either when reading from my external drive, or listening to music or reading my mail.
First thing I did was to take out the 256 MB memory module I had together with my 1GB one, because I know that could cause some problems. But it did nothing. After a verify disk, I got an "Invalid sibling link" thing which I read was quite serious, so what I did was backed up everything and re-installed the whole system deleting the hard disk.
Soon after install (10.4.8 again) I had a huge problem with my external drive: it would hang for no apparent problem when I was trying to copy files from it back to the hard disk...Especially big chunks of files, like the Itunes music library. The thing is that sometimes if I tried again say three times in the end it would copy the files, so there was nothing corrupted with a single file. From a Verify disk thing my Lacie external drive was fine. I read a post about problems with the power adaptor so what I did was plug it into another socket and after that it seemed to be working ok. Now that I copied everything back, I get the "you need o restart your system" message, again for no apparent reason. I was trying to back up my Itunes library to DVD (seeing that Lacie drives are not that reliable after all), and when I got back to the MAC, the screen saver was on, when I moved the mouse, the screen went grey and the message came up. The DVD was fine, it was just waiting for another one. Same thing the second time. Another time I was just doing ordinary things...so I really can't understand what the problem is.
    I ran hardware test: fine
    Verify disk: fine
    Repair disk permissions: ok
I disconnected all external peripherals: I got the "you need to restart" message after burning to Itunes anyway
I really don't know what to do to understand where the problem lies... ANYONE COULD HELP PLEASE?
    I'm desperate.
    Thanks

  • Re: Unable to get Satellite L650 to boot and System Repair inaccessible

    Satelite L650 Laptop ~ Windows 7.
I have problems with laptop being very slow to boot up for several months until it failed to start. Took it to PC World and they said that I had a virus and that they had reinstalled the software back to factory settings from the hard drive. Worked ok for a few weeks than falied to boot. Restored Windows from recovery option by pressing F8 on start up. Worked fine for a few weeks until last week. Repeated the process and working fine.
On Monday I installed Adobe Photoshop and on Tuesday evening laptop was slow to boot up again, so uninstalled Photoshop. On shut down it installed some Windows updates. Last night when I switched it on came up with a messgae saying making xxxxx registry changes then failed to boot up. Now when I press F8 and select "Repair Your Computer" Windows starts to load files and I then get the System Recovery Options ~ Select UK keyboard and press next then I get a window saying "You must log in to access System Recovery Options. If you are havingtrouble logging in, please contact your computer administrator for assistance. Click OK to restart the computer."
I've not had this on previous reinstalls and I can't get around it. Help!

I have attempted to follow the instructions in the link provided.
After pressing "Next" at number 2, I get a box headed System Recovery Options with a red cross and the following text "You must log in to access System Recovery Options.
If you are having trouble logging in, please contact your computer administrator for assistance.
Click OK to restart the computer."
There are no passwords set on the laptop.
If I press "Ok" to this message the laptop attempts to reboot.
I get the Toshiba splash screen followed by Windows is loading files, then Startup Repair runs and gives the following message "If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart the computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Click finish to exit and shut down your computer".
If I click Finish, the laptop totally powers down and I have to press the on button and it starts the boot up process again, runs start up repair and I'm presented with the message as above. If I press F8 at boot up I get the System Recovery Options Window shown at 2 in the link in the previous response.
If I press Next I get the message in the first paragraph of this post.

  • Setup is Unable to supported product on your system

Ive had this message ever since i had the card
and id like to update, i've tried software autoupdate, and even downloading the beta
i followed all the instructions etc etc
XP SP2, Audigy 2, AMD 3500+, gb ram
What exactly is the problem, shouldnt the software be functional?

I got a new computer with Vista installed. The new drivers worked fine, all good. Then I installed Win XP in dual boot to get some of my games running and had big problems installing the XP driver. "Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system". So after hours and hours of browsing and testing I found this driver: http://www.joker.si/mn3njalnik/index...howtopic=86650?It is a driver modified from the newly released Vista drivers. Now to get these to work I had extract the files manually from the file and run the Setup.exe in the Drivers folder. Can't get the audio console to work though only drivers. Atleast I have sound now so I am semi happy.

  • Who is getting good lightroom performance and what is your system setup?

First of all, I think that most people are innoculated to terrible performance in lightroom. Many people running lightroom for a living are using incredibly fast machines and still having performance issues. There is something wrong with this picture!
    Here are my system specs
i7 950 running a 3.3 ghz, 12gb ram, 1gb nvidia gts 450 graphics, windows 7 64 botting off of a crucial m4 ssd. My catalog is on the ssd along with preview files. My raw files and raw cache are on a raid 0 drive.
The terrible performance that drives me nuts simple things like cropping photos. In a given day of editing I might crop and rotate 500 files. This should be a fluid piece of lightroom's interface. In adobe camera raw hosted in bridge or photoshop cropping and straigtening photos was fluid on my 10 year old computer (and is perfectly fine on my current machine), but in lightroom sometimes it's smooth, and sometimes their is a bunch of lag when initially trying to crop or rotate. Syncing the previus development settings to the current photo takes several seconds? These are basic things. I've read all the threads, and tried all the fixes, and I am convinced that whatever current lag and slowness I'm experiencing is due to a software incompatibility with a piece of my hardware OR perhaps I'm running as smoothly as lightroom 4 is ever going to run.
I would like to know if there is anyone else out there who is having legitimally smooth performace out of lightroom 4.0, and if so, what are your system specs.

    Geoff
I've listed stats and issues above but specifics
    Library
    space / Z - wait 2 - 3 seconds - some days.... other times - like a rocket
everything else is perfectly acceptable - for version 4
    Develop mode
    Cropping
    hit R and wait, 2 - 3 seconds
handles appear mouse click to grab / rotate / move - wait 2 - 4 seconds before there is any response - not often with the spinning thing
    Zooming
    space / Z - wait 2 - 3 seconds - some days.... other times - like a rocket
    Lens correction
Manual rotate / vertical - usually acceptable, if you catch it right, you can increase / decrease quickly, otherwise its click - wait 2 - 4 seconds photo is adjusted....
horizontal - this is slow, significantly slower than the above for some reason.
    HSL/Color / B&W
    2 - 5 seconds - usually
    Web
This is acceptable - I just have 1 image selected, so any refreshes affect that image, so there is none of that tedious web update
    Slideshow
I've been using this with LRTimelapse, to export sequences of images to a preset, its just number crunching - go make a coffee or leave running to export 5 or 6 lots of 400+ images over night
    Map
limited by internet speed, its fine the usual irritation of the reverse geo-coding not defaulting to put the data in is mindblowingly frustrating...
I don't use the print or book modules as a rule
    Hope that helps Geoff

but when install the last update MacBookProEFIUpdate2.9 i got error like this
"This software is not supported on your system."
    please help me thanks

OK, so the firmware is the same as mine, and yet Apple Support offered this EFI and SMC update packages, which should give a message that our computers are updated.
However, the update packages fail to run.
Did Apple neglect to give the correct update for the mid-2012 issue of MacBook Pro 13-inch?  I have the i7 Intel processor, instead of the i5, and I was sold this unit as having two processors, but the System info only lists a single processor.
Is one of the problems with Intel-based MacBook Pro units that the integration wasn't without bugs that cause processor hang when running the OS Lion, even with updates to 10.7.5?
Shouldn't the EFI and SMC updaters run on these machines as stated in the Apple Support article?
What will Apple do for these customers?

The MacBook EFI Updater File that I downloaded from the Apple website for Support:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
--> shows my Model McBookPro 9,2 as needing
EFI Boot ROM version MBP91.00D3.B08 (EFI 2.9) (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1593)
    SMC version 2.2f44 (SMC 1.8) (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633)
I downloaded and tried to run both the files
    MacBookProEFIUpdate2.9.dmg 9/19/12
    AND
    MacBookProSMCUpdate.pkg
as offered on this matrix, which instructs:
"This article lists firmware updates that were released for Intel-based Macs. They update the firmware that originally shipped from the factory. If your computer does not appear on this list, an update from the factory firmware is not necessary.
If you are unsure whether your computer needs a particular update, simply download and open the update installer. The installer will alert you if the firmware update is already installed or not needed."
and instead of a message telling me of the proper update
"This software is not supported on your system."
So, why would the manual updater not tell me I already have the proper SMC and EFI updates?
What is the reason I get the message that the software I downloaded from Apple Support is not supported on my system?
Is this indicative of a larger problem with my MACBOOK PRO?

    [email protected],
why were you trying to reïnstall the Boot ROM and SMC versions that were already installed on your MacBook Pro?
I agree that  a “not supported” message is certainly less clear than an “already installed” message would have been.

OK I bit the bullet and contacted support on this one.
There is a known issue with MDS 2012 and business rules with a combination of "must be unique" attributes. If you do not list the attributes in the same order that they were created you will get the generic error I cited. At first they told me it must be
in the same order the attributes are in and that worked on one entity but not the other. The difference was that in the second entity I previously rearranged the attributes in question. Once I changed the order in the business rule to reflect the *original*
order it worked like a champ.
Hopefully this helps save someone some time and money.
