Firefox 4 under Vista is my default browser I cannot now open .xps files even with IEtab2 addon, any suggestions?
When I try to open a .xps file (even using open with IE) firefox launches and prompts me to save as the only option. Trying to open the saved file just opens a new tab and repeats the save option. I have installed IEtab 2 but this has no effect.
Did you check your security software (firewall)?
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

Firefox is set as my default browser but will not open. I can access other browsers
Firefox crashed while I was browsing. I re-started the LT and now Firefox will not start. I have tried re-starting from the desktop, the tool bar and the start menu.I can use other browsers which are not my default browser eg Googlechrome. This is not the first time Firefox has crashed but is the first time it would not re-start. I have looked through the Firefox support page but potential solutions require Firefox to be open to access the Firefox toolbar.
NB. I am an IT dummy (seriously) ie I have no idea what a plug-in is so the simpler the better when explaining what I am doing wrong. ThanksHopefully this support article is what you need:

* Open Firefox
* Use Google search
* Visit one or more sites
* Exit sites[s]
* Close Google
* Firefox appears to be closed - icon normal
* Attempt to re-open Firefox - nothing happens most times
* Can only re-open Firefox after doing a re-start
* I am no computer expert so simple to understand suggestions please!HI Noah:
Thanks for your answer. I'm working my way through the blog, and trying to take all of the steps. Hitman Pro did find 5 trojans, and many remnants of other malware, so hopefully that will help. I'll post again when I've finished trying everything else.
I had already run Malware Bytes, It did not find/remove the sweetim toolbar, but found a different trojan. Something is up with my antivirus I think. -
Firefox is unable to open pdf files even with adobe reader
i am unable to open pdf documents with firefox . i have installed latest version of adobe reader for firefox but still i am having problem. older versions of mozilla do not have this problem
Try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] If it functions correctly, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
Test Cases:
All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable. -
Firefox is set as the default browser, but if I click a link in MS Word, the link is opened with MS Internet explorer. Why?
What version of Windows and Office is it? I had this issue with an older version of office and Windows XP. Basically, MS are using their browser (IE) because it's their software (MS Office). If you go to options in MS word though, you should be able to find an option to set the default browser to open links.

I can't think of a scenario where Firefox would make itself the default browser against the user's consent. Still, go into Tools > Options > Advanced > General > System defaults and untick that small box at the bottom of the window that talks about Firefox asking you each time it starts.
Hopefully that will fix the issue. -
After changing my default browser from Firefox back to IE, other URLs are defaulting to IE but I have one URL that continues to default to Firefox. This web app will only run in IE so the only way I can run it is to open IE first and then enter or select the URL. Is there a setting someplace that will change the default browser for this URL to be IE?
You can make IE the default browser, that will reset some registry keys<br />
Control Panel > Internet Options: Programs<br />
Put a check in the box next to 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser'<br />
Start IE and let IE make itself the default browser.
Check the default settings in:<br />
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > "Set Program Access And Defaults" (on the left)<br />
Open: Custom (click arrow on the right)<br />
Select "Internet Explorer" under "Choose a default Web Browser"<br />
Click OK -
When Microsoft Internet Explorer was my browser the dial-up connection screen to my internet service provider would come up automatically when I launched the browser.
Now that I have made Mozilla Firefox my default browser this no longer happens. Launching Firefox results in an error message which says the website cannot be found. I then have to launch Internet Explorer, connect to my ISP, close Internet Explorer, then launch Firefox.
This is a bit tedious. Can Firefox perform the same connect to ISP action automatically just like Internet Explorer does? If so, how do I activate this?
Thanks

[SOLVED] Prevent firefox from asking to be default browser
Heya,
how do you prevent firefox from asking to be the default browser the first time you run it.
(it's kinda annoying on a live CD lol)
Last edited by willxtreme (2010-01-27 22:51:27)Edit > Preferences etc. works by opening firefox
but in a Live CD, I'm trying to find the way to preconfigure it that way
The solution I'm thinking of is copying my .mozilla settings folder in the live CD's home folder but I was wondering if there's another way

I could not open my .html file extensions in firefox..Any of my .html files are not opening...
Can you open the files via File > Open File?
*Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.
Make sure that Firefox is set correctly as the default browser.

How can I stop Firefox from making itself the default browser every time it upgrades?
Every time there's a new version of firefox, it updates automatically, but it changes the windows file type settings so that firefox is now the default browser.
I have gone to tools > options > advanced and cleared the "Always check to see if firefox is the default browser" checkbox. It's not an issue on startup, only on upgrade.
This happens every time there's a new version of firefox.Unfortunately the "web browser" I want to use is just a compiled script that examines the URL and then launches the proper browser to open it (because some pages are not standards compliant and work better in a certain browser). It does not appear in the default web browser list, but when I go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types, I can edit the firefox URL, URL http and URL https types and then it will work correctly until the next firefox upgrade.

I see. Well, I just tried to make IE my default browser, but it did not solve the problem. I receive the same script error when I view the image. (I may not have explained this thoroughly enough at first - I do get to view the image after answering the error message, but the print button embedded in the window doesn't work. Before, I never had a problem with viewing or printing.)
I imagine that at this point I will either need to communicate this to the IE people, or possibly revert to an older version of IE. -
I am currently using Mozilla/5.0 Firefox/3.6.12. After having upgraded to this version I find that email links to my Outlook client will not automatically open a new email page pre-populated with the recipient's address. All other links on the page have worked correctly.
Many thanks jscher2000, problem solved.

In the article, only plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types was present. After resetting then closing Firefox, normal service was resumed.
