Firefox locks up / plugin container error appears -- what to do?

Firefox locks up. "Plugin Container has to stop" error appears. Tried reloading FF (3.6), no change

Make sure that your firewall doesn't block the plugin-container process.

  • Firefox.exe and plugin-container.exe both take an extremely high amount of memory and slow my PC down. I have often had to end and restart to fix this. What is up with the memory leak?

You may want to know that this is a desktop with a Vista operating system.

That's supposed to indicate it's your plug-ins like Flash that is the problem.
You might try changing hardware acceleration, a setting within Flash either turn if off or on.

  • How do I get Firefox's "red plugin button" to appear?

I am using Windows XP with Firefox 20.
The Mozilla support pages say to click the red plugin button to change plugin settings.
I have never seen this button appear on Firefox!
When I try to follow Mozilla support instructions, I have to keep opening up more and more windows.
This is so confusing that I don't want to make changes that might make things worse.
Isn't there a simple way to make this magic red plugin button to be on my address bar?

Mozilla support says to click on the red plugin icon on address bar to allow Java. It does not appear on any site I go to. Just as the person originally asking question said : "No, there is just the big arrow & a gra(e)yed out "this website does not supply identity information." I really have only seen that reg plugin button except for on the mozilla support page. It has never appeared when I have been @ relatives' or friends' houses. "

  • Plugin-container in Firefox 4; High CPU and Graphics Switching Problems and Workaround

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4, and unfortunately, I've had many problems running Firefox under OSX on my Macbook Pro.
The first problem I came across was that Firefox is now hardware accelerated. This should be a good thing, but due to the way Apple has implemented graphics switching, Firefox caused the discreet graphics card to be used (as seen with GFXcardstatus)
To prevent this, I went into preferences, and disabled "Use hardware acceleration where available" under Advanced>General.
But my problems didn't stop there. Now, it seems Firefox has decided to run plugins such as flash under a separate process called plugin-container in order to protect the browser from plugin crashes. This is a good idea (I believe Chrome and Safari do the same), but even with hardware acceleration disabled in Firefox and Flash, plugin-container still triggered the discreet graphics.
This would actually be acceptable if plugin-container was terminated after I navigated away from the page with the flash content, but this is not what happens. Instead, plugin-container keeps using the high-powered GPU until Firefox is closed.
At this point, I thought that I'd try to force the computer to only use integrated graphics (using gfxcardstatus), but then I discovered another problem:
The plugin-container process was using large amounts of CPU time when flash content was visible in the Firefox window. Typically, viewing just a static flash ad would cause plugin-container to use about 60% (in addition to firefox using about 20%, that means 80% total). Obviously, this was a battery life problem.
After all of this I think I found a temporary workaround, but there are clearly problems here that need to be resolved by the Firefox developers. There are many non tech-savvy users who are no doubt experiencing poor battery life from these problems.
    '''My Temporary Solution'''
    1. Disable hardware acceleration in Firefox in Advanced > General
    2. Disable hardware acceleration in Flash by right clicking a flash element, clicking settings, and then unchecking "enable hardware acceleration"
    2. In about:config, search for dom.ipc and set all boolean values that appear to false. This will disable Firefox's plugin-container process for all plugins.
(At this point, if you restart Firefox, Flash will not work at all)
    3. Set Firefox to 32-bit mode by getting info on Firefox.app and then checking the "Open in 32-bit mode checkbox"
    4. Restart Firefox. Flash should be working with reasonable CPU usage (I had something like 20% with static flash ads as opposed to 80% before), plugin-container will be no more, and your Macbook will no longer switch to discreet graphics for Firefox or Flash.
'''UPDATE:''' It seems that firefox still sometimes causes a switch to discreet graphics for certain flash elements (video players mostly). Also, I've still seen some cases where flash elements are using large amounts of the CPU, even when they are not in the current tab.
I hope this was helpful to somebody, and if anyone has a suggestion for how to make this workaround obsolete or better, please respond.

Ive downgraded from FF4 to 3.6 at this point. The CPU usage is out of control on OS X.

  • How do I suppress "plugin container for firefox has stopped working" ?

I am doing some Flash programming and using Firefox to debug. Every time I end the debug session from Flash Builder I get the error "Plugin container for firefox has stopped working". Is there a way to suppress this false error message? There is not a problem with the container or any plugins, simply that Firefox thinks the container has crashed because it is being closed by the IDE. I have already had to change several options to suppress false error alerts, but just seem to get new ones like this.

Firefox uses the plugin-container process to run plugin out of the current Firefox process (Out-Of-Process-Plugins) and you may not see the plugin mentioned. Flash uses protected mode by default and that causes two plugin-container processes to be active.
You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:
*check for updates for your graphics drive drivers<br>https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
*disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • Mozilla Firefox plugin-container has stopped working properly

Mozilla Firefox plugin-container has stopped working properly. FOR THE UMPTEENTH DAMN TIME... HOW DO I FIX THIS on Firefox 3.6.13!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
    ''edited by a moderator - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Forum+and+chat+rules+and+guidelines ''

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

  • Is it possible to disable the plugin-container in Firefox 14?

With an older version of Firefox, I was able to disable the plugin-container by typing in 'about:config' in the toolbar, typing 'ipc' in the search bar on that page, then changing the value of the executable (or whatever it's called) for the plugin-container to 'false', and, finally, restarting Firefox.
However, even after doing that in Firefox 14, it still runs when I use Flash applications. Does anyone know another way to disable the plugin-container? Because in my honest opinion the plugin just causes more lag since it takes up a lot of memory (at one point it was at 100,000 k, which is ridiculous).
Sorry if someone has posted this question before.

I actually found that Flash Player started functioning normally again after I disabled protected mode. I tried toggling the plugin container on and off with protected mode off in flash, and it made no difference in the videos lagging.
In all honesty, this really isn't a problem with Firefox and the plugin container. It's a problem with Adobe using the public to beta test a feature that shouldn't be published just quite yet.

  • Plugin container for flash keeps crashing

I am constantly getting plugin container errors. Firefox locks up, then my whole computer eventually freezes up. It is the shockwave plugin that keeps crashing and sticking in my task manager. I have the latest updates. It mostly happens on Youtube and Farmville 2. This is extremely frustrating. Is there some setting I can check or features I can turn off to stop this from happening. I am realistic - things crash. The problem is it is happening ALL the time.

I had a problem with youtube videos crashing and finally sorted it out by disabling the plugin container. Type about:config in the address bar and search for dom.ipc Set dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to 'false' I did not need to disable protected mode or hardware acceleration
