Firefox-pgo in AUR - several naive questions

I just happened upon Ranguvar's firefox-pgo in the AUR.  It builds flawlessly with makepkg on my system and the installed binary feels faster than the one from the standard package. I have two naive questions:
1)  I realize that it contains the same base src as the standard firefox package, but there are a number of patches the PKGBUILD applies.  Any potential security concerns of using this build over the standard one?
2) One only has to build the package once, right?  I have been reading about pgo and from what I understand, the package is built once, the user actually bangs on the software while other executables monitor how it behaves to some log files, then, at some point in the future, the user re-builds the package and these log files are used to rebuild the it with user-specific optimizations.  Do I have that right and if so, how does one do it with this PKGBUILD?
Thanks for the clarification.

graysky wrote:Do we have a list of these in the mozconfig we can edit to disable?
off the top of my head i think:
ac_add_options --disable-safe-browsing
ac_add_options --disable-crashreporter --disable-parental-controls
ac_add_options --disable-installer --disable-updater
are the main ones.  if you go to the mozilla developer center, the mozconfig options are not very detailed in description, they cover a few ones, then dump the rest with little or no details on what they're for.  and some are missing entirely.
oh and if you're really not a fan of being tracked on your laptop, and dont arent into geocaching or geo trolling or whatever that "hobby" is
--disable-necko-wifi
and remove wireless-tools from the PKGBUILD build depends.  this is used as a poor man's gps by tracking wireless networks around your computer and triangulating to your position from there.  i'm still not sure why it's enabled by default, but oh well

  • Firefox-pgo - profileserver.py

    Heylo,
I succesfully compiled this a week ago, but a few days after my harddrive crashed(*click click beep beep pewwwweeesh*). I reinstalled arch on an usb drive, and now tried compiling it again, but it is getting stuck no matter what flags I tried at:
    OBJDIR=/tmp/yaourt-tmp-busata/aur-firefox-pgo/firefox-pgo/src/mozilla-1.9.2/ff-pgo python /tmp/yaourt-tmp-busata/aur-firefox-pgo/firefox-pgo/src/mozilla-1.9.2/ff-pgo/_profile/pgo/profileserver.py
    INFO | automation.py | Application pid: 28778
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":99.0"
I'm using the pkgbuild from AUR, tried changing the march to nocona (which seems the one good for my processor), which got stuck at the same point, even though it compiled just fine last week.
    Any thoughts?

I'd suggest asking in the pgo thread instead, and maybe do a search there first to see if others have had that problem.  if it's hanging at testing portion (where it goes to another X in framebuffer) you may need to try to disable that (on the pgo-thread the earlier PKGBUILDs did not use framebuffer for the profile tests)

    Naive question but here goes.
As a family we have one Apple ID. All devices are synced via my PC and backed up to it rather than to iCloud.
Books purchased via Kindle App appear on all the devices within the "cloud" option. How do I separate each reader's prefernce to their own device? I want to make sure that the younger one's dont have access to anything unsuitable.
    Thanks.

You can have one AppleID for your purchases so that all teh devices can use all the apps without having to buy them again, and at the same time, have different iCloud accounts for each user so that their content is not intermingled with everyone else's.  You can even go so far as to have your iCloud Account enabled for "Find my iPhone" for each of the other devices allowing you to keep track of where tehy are when they get misplaced.
If you need/want, you can share iCloud Calendars between different iCloud accounts as well.  This is exactly what my wife & I have done.  We share calendars so I know when she has classes or dog competitions, and she can see my work schedule so she knows what nights I have to be in late, etc.

hello..i use firefox 4 beta 05..my question is..why when i open let's say 6 tabs..my windows show that i have 6 instancies of firefox instead of one like it does with firefox 3.6? thanks
maybe i am saying it wrong..when i press alt+tab there is only one firefox open..but in windows 7 in the taskbar..every tab open..appears as another window open

If you are referring to taskbar previews, you can turn them off by modifying a hidden preference.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # In the filter box type '''previews'''
    # Double-click on the preference browser.taskbar.previews.enable to change its value to '''false'''

  • Mozilla Firefox 5.0 disabled several ad-ons...!!! I want them back. How do I reverse this action Mozilla Firefox 5.0 did? in English

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 disabled several ad-ons when I installed it on my new laptop...!!! I want these ad-ons working. How do I reverse this action Mozilla Firefox 5.0 did to my CPU without warning me?
I've used Mozilla Firefox 4.0 for years on my desktop, and now...problems! Do I need to uninstall the program. Is there a feature to re-enable the disabling that Firefox did without using a Microsoft restore point? Please inform

When Firefox disables an add-on, it usually is because it includes a list of compatible Firefox versions and it hasn't yet been updated for Firefox 5. If it worked on Firefox 4, there is a good chance it will work on Firefox 5, but no guarantee.
You can force Firefox to ''ignore'' add-on version restrictions by (what else) installing an add-on. Then you can test whether the add-ons important to you actually work in Firefox 5.
    [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ Add-on Compatibility Reporter :: Add-ons for Firefox]
After you install this add-on and restart Firefox, there will still be a message that "--- is incompatible with Firefox 5.0" but the add-on will be enabled and a Disable button will appear for that entry.

  • Firefox-pgo 3.5.7

im clearly missing something simple but when it opens firefox to test it i get an error:
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
and everything times out then it just recompiles. i have firefox closed and reinstalled orbit2 but it still gave this

You have compiled firefox-pgo on your computer before, right? You're just having a problem compiling the update from last night? Mine did compile and install without a problem.
I'm sorry, I don't have much for suggestions. A search on Google hints that it might have something to do with root user. Are you making the package as root? Are there any firefox settings in the root home directory? If there is, trying deleting them. Consider creating a "fresh" new using and building firefox-pgo as that new user. (in other words, remove all gconf and firefox settings before compiling)

  • Naive question about erasing everything with reinstall.

Due to keychain problems with which the Apple techs were unfamiliar, they suggested that I back up what I need, and then erase everything before reinstalling. So, my naive question is: How do I get back all of the software with which my iBook came preloaded? (If it matters, my install disc is 10.4.3; I'm updated to 10.4.8)
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4

Along with that question, does that mean that all of my iTunes that I purchased and filed away will be lost as well on a clean re-install? I did backup my tunes after every monthly purchase. However, I am concerned about them and the school work and Adobe software I put on there-! I have all teh Adobe discs, but will there be a complication when doing this? I had to do this because the iBook just froze on the apple icon and nothing more after having probs with it for weeks, namely, the "permissions" issue; it thought that I was and was not the Admin-! It finally crashed on my after a Restart...
    Frustrating and sad...

Hi. I'm the OP... Thank you to cor-el and Mad Person...
Cor-el: I already saw the pages about Firefox crashes and already read through the forums; I definitely might have missed something, but I did read through all of it already and tried the solutions there before posting here...
Mad Person: About:Crashes just shows the submitted crash reports and report IDs I've listed above, with their date and time. That's it. The Report IDs are as I listed above.. none of them start with "bp-xxxx".... I disabled hardward acceleration as you recommended; I've tried it before, but firefox crashed again so I just turned it back on, but I've made lots of changes since, so who knows - I'll keep it permanently off now and see if it helps this time.
Otherwise, I'm still stuck. Even my Report IDs are weird, due to the throttling problem apparently!? Yikes! ;)

  • Several unrelated questions about new MacBook

This is probably bad form, but I thought I'd try to get several newbie questions answered at once.
    1) Screen on my new Macbook 2.16 core 2 Duo seems overly bright and almost washed out. I changed the gamma to 2.2 in the DIsplays panel and that helps considerably--is there any downside to running like this?
    2) I have heard "glossy" screen mentioned a lot, and mine said it was a "glossy" screen, but isn't just the standard screen, or are there alternative screens for the Macbook?
    3) How do I find the build date for this Macbook?
    4) I wonder if there's an easy way to get my Win XP installation on Bootcamp on my iMac into a Parallels or VMWare VM on this Macbook?
    5) I read that one small advantage of the newer Macbooks is that they have a revised and improved (and slightly smaller) power supply block. Mine looks **** the same as a friend's Macbook Core Duo -- is there some way to check for the current power supply? Machine may have been in Amazon stock for a while for all I know.
    6. Doesn't this new Macbook have wireless n? Would there be a significant increase in speed were I to get a new wireless n-capable router/modem (right now I've got a wireless G)?
I'm sure I have another half-dozen, but I'll practice retraint and hope nobody minds my ganging up on you.
    Cheers--

    Hi Pier,
    1) Screen on my new Macbook 2.16 core 2 Duo seems overly bright and almost washed out. I changed the gamma to 2.2 in the DIsplays panel and that helps considerably--is there any downside to running like this?
None that I can think of. Obviously, if you are doing professional image manipulation then you could calibrate the screen, preferably with professional calibrating tools.
    2) I have heard "glossy" screen mentioned a lot, and mine said it was a "glossy" screen, but isn't just the standard screen, or are there alternative screens for the Macbook?
The standard screen is matte with glossy available as a free option.
    3) How do I find the build date for this Macbook?
Look at the serial number and specifically the first 4 digits. Mine is W8717XXXXXX. This tells me that my build date is week 17.
    4) I wonder if there's an easy way to get my Win XP installation on Bootcamp on my iMac into a Parallels or VMWare VM on this Macbook?
The only way is if you have the original Win XP CD. Installation of software on to another computer is, of course, subject to the licensing terms - EULA

Mine looks ** the same as a friend's Macbook Core Duo -- is there some way to check for the current power supply? Machine may have been in Amazon stock for a while for all I know.
Sorry, don't know but you could pop down to an Apple retail store or dealer and compare the newer power adapters with your one.
    6. Doesn't this new Macbook have wireless n? Would there be a significant increase in speed were I to get a new wireless n-capable router/modem (right now I've got a wireless G)?
802.11n can be enabled for free if you have purchased the new Airport Extreme Base Station. Alternatively, if you wish to enable 802.11n but have a third party wireless router you can purchase the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler for Mac from the online store - it's only $1.99.
The following Apple KB document will guide you on how to check if 802.11n is enabled on your MBP:

  • Firefox 14 keeps hanging severely ever since I upgraded to the latest version of Adobe Flash (11.4).

On September 22, I got a notification to update to the newest version of Flash (11.4). After installing it, Firefox (version 14) began to hang severely on some of my favorite sites, like DeviantArt and Facebook. After trying to process things, it gave up and wouldn't respond. After booting up in Safe Mode, I turned off the flash add-on, and everything worked fine, save for the games that required flash to play. As soon as I turned it back on, the hanging and unresponsiveness came back.

I wasn't able to get to any of those sites without having serious hanging issues. I just uninstalled Flash, rebooted, then reinstalled it. Everything seems to be working fine now.

  • Firefox lags and freezes several times in an hour - How to fix?

I've read up on the forums and nothing seems to be describing what I'm experiencing with Firefox.
The last 3-4 days I've had several instances where Firefox lags or completely freezes up when switching between tabs. It will still somewhat work but it's ridiculously slow.
For example, it WILL eventually go to that tab, but it will take a minute, and then nothing on the page will work for a minute, so on and so on. Sometimes a black screen will appear where the text should be. Sometimes it stays black, sometimes the page eventually loads. It was only one website so I thought maybe that page was having issues until today when it started happening on several other websites.
It's happening quite often and it's driving me crazy. I only had an error message once, early on when this started. Since then it just seems to lag and freeze, lag and freeze, over and over without giving me an error message until I get fed up and close out of it. Upon start up again, it works fine for a bit.
I don't use any toolbars. I updated Windows and my drivers. Computer has been restarted several times since this started.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions!

  • Two naive questions: change report templates and customization.

I searched the forum but didn't have the luck to find the exact answer.
    1) I've chosen the alternating row color template for one of my report, however I wanted to change it to another template, say standard. Is it possible, and where I may find the place to change?
    2) Is there a tutorial of how to customize the row color depends upon the value dynamically? Like an OBE. An elaborated example will be great!
    Thanks in advance.

    Radhika,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, based on this statement from the one link:
"Several macros in Sun ONE Studio IDE cannot be edited (for example, DATE, TIME, NAME of class, PACKAGE, etc.)."
It would appear there is no way to alter the timestamp format.
The question still remains of is there a way to access the year for a copyright stamp? If anyone else has any input, it would be appreciated.
Thanks again Radhika for your assistance.
