Firefox remembers closed tabs when reopened

I close all tabs and quit FF 5. I reopen FF and the closed tabs reappear.

Make sure that you give Firefox enough time to close properly and save the session state to disk.<br />
If you close Firefox immediately after closing a lot of tabs then try to wait 15 seconds before closing Firefox to see if that helps.
You can also check for problems with the file sessionstore.js.<br />
You can check the date and time of that file to see if Firefox has saved it.
It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
* Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

It would seem if your choose "Show my windows and tabs from last time" and,
*when you last closed Firefox, you had no web site open (just a blank tab), that it would open just that blank tab

Open tabs are automatically saved when closing Firefox beginning in Firefox 4. To open your last session, after Firefox starts, click History > Restore Previous Session. For this to work

• Why doesn't Firefox close all tabs when exiting?

I see several users have problems with Firefox not saving tabs when closing..... My trouble is just the opposite: Firefox re-opens all tabs when restarting, even when "quit" is selected in closing.

Make sure that Firefox is closing properly, otherwise it may be considered as a rash and that causes Firefox to reopen those tabs automatically.<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs and Firefox hangs (Hang at exit)
Firefox 3.5 and later versions will automatically try to restore the tabs and windows from the last session if a crash has occurred or Firefox wasn't closed properly the previous time.
Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.

Firefox opens mutiple tabs when I open a bookmarked page. When I go to the next bookmarked page Firefox opens all previous tabs that I have recently opened

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

• Why does firefox forget some of my tabs when reopened?

This is strange but recently I started noticing that when reopening my previous session some of my tabs are blank pages BUT it retains the favicon used for that tab - now that's fine if I know which site the favicon is from. Typing the site in will bring up the history but if I dont know it I'm screwed. I noticed this started happening with ver. 33 onwards I'm not sure where the issue lies. is it an addon? (haven't installed any recently) Is it a problem with the browser? is it a combo of both addons and browser? No clue. Attached is an image of the issue.
Note: The upload images option wasn't functioning properly so here's a link to the pic I was referring to: http://i.imgur.com/nqn183P.png

• Previous version of FF used to automatically reopen saved tabs when reopening FF browser. in version 10 - it's stopped doing that. any fixes for this?

when closing browser, previous version used to have a pop up window that asked if I wanted to remember the open tab locations and then when I reopened the browser it would automatically open those tabs. this is no longer working in version 10.

Firefox 4 and later versions save the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
Use "Firefox > Quit Firefox" if you want to restore multiple windows or otherwise have problems with restoring tabs.<br />
You can use "History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
You may need to click the orange/gray Firefox button to see History.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
Using the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting is a more reliable way to restore session data.
* Firefox > Preferences > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

• Firefox not closing promptly when browser closed

Firefox continues to run after being closed, and doesn't allow me to reopen a new browser window for 5 to 10+ seconds. This is a fairly recent problem and I think it began when I downloaded most recent version of Firefox/Mozilla. Very frustrating.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems article.

• Why does Firefox open new tabs when HOME is clicked?

I just upgraded to version 29.0 from a 4 year old version and I'm experiencing a problem that I can't imagine how to correct. I have two home pages set in my config, so that when I open firefox I get two tabs displayed. My Home Page field reads "https://www.google.com|https://news.google.com" When I open Firefox I get two tabs, one for Google and one for Google News.
On my old version, if I was in the first tab & navigated to www.hp.com and then later clicked HOME, Firefox would load that tab back to google. If I was in the second tab, it would navigate that tab back to google as well. The multiple Home page option was just a great help for initialization.
Now, regardless of what tab I'm in, when I click "HOME" Firefox opens two new pages, sets the first to my first home and the second to my second home and now I have FOUR tabs open. Click home again and I have 6 tabs, again and 8 tabs, etc.
There has to be a way to fix this. The HOME button is supposed to operate of the current focus, just as it does if you have a single home page specified.

Hi Stan, what both Ed and I are saying is that the first of your home pages should open in the current tab you're viewing -- the way you want -- because that's what happens for us.
Could you repeat the test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
Any difference?

• How do I get firefox to save tabs when I quit the program? This doesn't appear to be available in 4.0

On previous firefox version, when I quit the program, a prompt would ask me if I wanted to save tabs. That doesn't appear to be happening with 4.0 upgrade. Can I still save and quit?

One change in Firefox 4 is to by default stop Firefox displaying the warning message, but it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
# Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
# Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
# Locate the preference browser.tabs.warnOnClose, if its value is set to false, double-click on it to change its value to true
# Repeat this for these 3 preferences browser.warnOnQuit, browser.warnOnRestart and browser.showQuitWarning

• Firefox reloads other tabs when I login and/or sign out of gmail?

Hi,
So, if I have many tabs opened and when I login to gmail over the "mail.google.com" site, the moment when Firefox is starting to load in the my gmail account, it starts to reload not all but many tabs, which in affect slows down drastically my gmail account loading time. Up to few minutes, depending on how many tabs are reloaded and how this sites are big of course.
This thing started to happen since Firefox version 25, and it was not present before as I can remember.
Since not all tabs are reloading, I belive that this has something to do with java scripts on this sites or something, so probable when gmail login/sign out triggers some script it activates all this scripts in all loaded sites in Firefox tabs that have this same script.
You see, when you force shot down/restart Firefox, and Firefox opens again (in this case it shows all the tabs of all the pages but it doesn't load the sites up until you don't click on the tab) it does not reload this tabs on gmail login/sign out like he did before, but when you reload the sites by clicking on the tab, and they get loaded in the memory, they will start to reload again every time you login/sign out of gmail.
Kind regards

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• Why does my reopening my most recently closed tab (CTRL+SHIFT+T) open the tab in a new tab group in beta 9?

In beta 8, reopening the most recently closed tab would reopen that tab in the same location where it was before. Is this a bug or perhaps a setting in about:config?

This will be fixed in beta 10: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases

When I reopen Firefox, my tab groups are there, but they stay on the same content as when I closed it - sometimes hours ago. Sites like CNN, or MSNBC change content many times an hour. I have to manually refresh all tabs before I see the latest news.

# Closing Tab Groups – Each tab group has a close button in the upper-right corner. Clicking it will close that group and all of its tabs.
* If you've closed a tab group by accident, you can click the Undo Close Group button to restore it before leaving the Panorama view.

• Why wont Firefox 5 warn me when closing multiple tabs? The box in settings is checked.

After I downloaded Firefox 5 it no longer warns me when I'm closing multiple tabs. The box is checked in settings for tabs but it still wont do it. This feature worked fine in Firefox 4. Can this be a glitch?

@NoriMori and auscompgeek
We are not talking about saving tabs when closing; we're talking about the warning "You are about to close X tabs" that usually shows up when you press the browser's close button. Now when I press the button, everything closes; no warning. I'm fortunate that Firefox does have a "restore previous session" button when you reopen Firefox.

• Like Firefox, can Safari restore its tabs when (closed and) re-opened?

If Firefox contains open / active tabs and is closed, those tabs (and their history) can (via a setting) be restored when Firefox is re-opened.
Can Safari restore its tabs when it's re-opened as well?

In my Safari for Windows (5.0.5) I've got a "Reopen all Windows from previous session" command. (In my History Menu.)
