Firefox not closing promptly when browser closed

Firefox continues to run after being closed, and doesn't allow me to reopen a new browser window for 5 to 10+ seconds. This is a fairly recent problem and I think it began when I downloaded most recent version of Firefox/Mozilla. Very frustrating.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • Lock not always released if browser closed in edit mode.

We have had a few instances in the last couple weeks (since deployment of an I.P. application) where a user has either closed the browser while in edit mode, or received some sort of error when saving plan data and the browser closed, where the Lock in RSPLSE/SM12 was not deleted. In the last case, the lock stayed for 6 hours before we were notified to manually delete the lock. The user had closed all windows, even restarted her machine.
Any insight on how to enforce removal of locks if browser is closed? We are on SAPKW70017 and BI Java Support Package Patch SP015

    Hi Cote,
this is a frequently discussed topic. Usually the lock should be released, the session should be closed etc at the time closing a window.
One idea for this one: Does a small popup window appear when you close your browser? If the users have activated the popup blocker this will cause problems because the locks and sessions can not be released. Also it might cause problems using other browsers than IE...
    Good luck.

  • Firefox don't close when "browsing and Download History" is deleted on exit

Firefox doesn't close properly in about 50 % of cases. When closing FF, the window closes but the process firefox.exe isn't terminated. When trying to open FF again you got the error message "Firefox is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." After terminating the process firefox.exe in the windows task manager, FF can be started again.
Error only occurs when under "Options/Privacy/Use custom settings for history" at "Clear History when Firefox closes" the option "Browsing and Download History" is selected.
All other options selected or not don't cause the issue.
I switched this option it several times. When "Browsing and Download History" at "Clear History when Firefox closes" isn't selected, the error doesn't appear.
Reproducible regardless if "Remember my browsing history" and "Remember download history" are selected or not.
    Reproducible:
    - after new installation of Firefox (Firefox 29.0.1 german, Windows7 64-bit)
    - with different profiles, even with all addons disabled or running in safe mode
    - with new profile with no addons or dictionaries installed
    - with windows firewall turned off and deactivated antivirus program
    - with hardware accellaration on and off
I know the issue has already reported at bugzilla.mozilla.org and described at
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997918
    https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/997670
I want to describe the problem more precisely:
It only occurs when "Browsing and Download History" is delete on exit. The other option at "Clear History when Firefox closes" don't cause this issue.
Is there any other solution then to turn "Browsing and Download History" off?

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may
be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
Then '''Tools > Options > Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
'''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • Firefox not opening a private browsing window instead getting another normal browsing window

I went through the forum question and found answers and tried that but it does not seem to resolve the problem.
Tried the steps given before that doesn't resolve it
tried uninstall completely and reinstall with new setup , still not getting the private browsing
    current software config:
    Windows 7 32 bit

    Thanks for your help .

    Hello Philip,
You are right about the setting and your solution is working but given the option of setting to never remember history and then defaulting to private browsing mode is not given as a note to user while this option is selected, seems to me as a user experience hiderring issue.
However , I have found out that we can still will be able to open in private browsing mode for window 7 OS system by using ''right click option on pinned firefox from the taskbar is still able to launch the firefox in the private browsing mode.''
Please try it, its working even when we have set set firefox to "never remember history" in the options>privacy panel
Thanks philip for sharing your valuable findings for better firefox browsing experience

  • Energy saver not coming on when lid closed

I'm not sure if this because I changed some setting or because I did the battery sw upgrade but now when IU close the lid on my MBR it does not sleep. The apple on the back of it stays lit, and it looks like the display never goes off. Is there a setting that controls this?

I have the A1175 model number in the recall but my serial number ends in WCRA which has not yet been recalled.
There was an update associated with this recall which I installed (and can't find the link for now). I think that's what screwed with my energy saving.
My MBP also has a problem when it comes out of sleep on battery power the display is very very dim, so dark that you would think it is not running. But it is. The keys are slightly lit up and if I take it in a dark room I can see the screen just a little.
f10 does not brighten it up. The problem is intermittent and seems only to happen when I can't call Apple about it. If I restart the display works fine. Of course I lose whatever was open.

  • PSE 13 keeps crashing for no reason, Win 8.1 64. From Task Manager looks like PSE is not releasing memory when file closed

and since there is no autosave feature in PSE (unlike PS) , you lose your work...

I read this morning on another forum that closing the info. palette prevented "freezing" that the user experienced in PSEv.13. I don't know the difference between freezing and crashing in this context.
Try it, nothing to lose. Please post back.

  • I had a problem with firefox not showing up when I tried to open it. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled. After reinstallation my computer tells me the file is corrupt and I still can't open it. Other browsers work fine.

Mozilla Firefox has worked fine for several years. Beginning two days ago I would click on the desktop icon, I would see the little whirling circle for about 1 second and then nothing would happen. Later when I shut down the computer, suddenly I would see the mozilla firefox page come up for an instant and then shut down. The computer was telling me that it was open, but I couldn't see the home page or use it. Then I decided to try uninstalling it and reinstalling. The uninstall went fine. But after downloading the latest version, which my antivirus program told me was safe, the computer refused to install the executable program, telling me it was corrupt. I have already lost all my bookmarks, etc. It looks like my only solution is to use another browser. However I really prefer Mozilla. Any suggestions?

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 10.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Firefox getting stuck often when browsing or clicking on a link

    Hello,
I have recently downloaded Firefox 4. When I am browsing the web, for example, clicking on a search result link in Google, Firefox doesn't open the page.
Instead of opening the page, it shows the message: "Waiting for... <site>" in the left corner in the bottom of the page, or shows "Connecting..." as the tab name, and a blank page as seen here: http://cl.ly/5L2R .
The page doesn't load after waiting over 10 minutes.
The best solution I found so far is copying the link, restarting Firefox, and entering this link again.
I'd like to mention that I'm not trying to open sites that have a lot of media content and therefore should be loaded slowly, and the problem I've mentioned never happened to me in Firefox 3.6 or previous versions.
Please help me find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sagiftw

I have this same issue. I click on links but it takes forever for FF 4 to load the page. There are times it doesn't even load the page at all. I don't get the white screen like the OP, it just stops trying to connect and there is no activity as if I never clicked on a link at all.
The only way I have been able to fix this is to click on the link multiple times in succession and even then it takes a long time. This is happening to me right now on the PayPal site while trying to go to the next page in my payment history.
I reverted back to FF 3.6 and didn't have this problem and I don't have any new add-ons since the upgrade so it isn't caused by that either. If anything I have less add-ons because about a 1/3 of them are not compatible with FF 4 yet.
I love the new look of FF4 but this is extremely frustrating!!!

  • Java plugin not going away when browser closes

Not really a huge problem, but just a question. At my work, we've developed an insurance card scanning applet and on one of the machines we have installed it on the plugin doesn't go away once all of the browsers are closed. The machine in question is a Windows 98 2nd Ed box and the plugin is ver 1.3.1_02. We have the software installed on 6 other similar machines at the site and none of them have the problem. On Windows 2000/XP/NT it works fine too.
What sort of things could cause that? Browser settings or some other settings? Just curious.

Thanks, that's sort of what I thought it might be. I didn't create the applet but I get to fix it. :)
I've also found that the applet is leaving a file handle open somewhere. Could that be why it won't die properly? It's not that large of an applet and it's not multi-threading but we do use JAI and JNI along with communicating with the browser through JSObject which I've read can cause trouble. Do you know of any good tools that could help me track down loose threads/file handles in the applet? Or techniques to clean up properly?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Error 401 not found appear when browsing

i cant browse using any search engine such yahoo or google..the answer come out with 404 not found..is it because of virus? thanks

I followed this and have a situation where the 'hosts.txt' file when going thru explorer is fine - no extra web addresses - just an 127.xxx IP. So it is ok.
However, when i go into RUN command and put in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts' , going thru notepad, I get a laundry list of google sites, you tube, etc - and those sites, coincidentally, all cause me '404 not found' errors.
Question is - why is it different going thru the RUN command ?
    Any ideas anyone ?

  • Even though I have ordered Firefox to clear my entire browsing history and cookies when it closes, it is not doing so when I exit. I have to manually clear the history and cookies each time.

I am running Firefox 10.0.2 for Linux, and have never had this problem with previous versions. I wonder if it is an issue of Firefox not quitting completely when I close it...meaning it would not clear the history and cookies because it is not technically shut down. This is just a theory, however. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. I made sure the prefs.js file had read and write permissions, and since then it seems to be saving my settings and deleting all the information I ordered it to on exit.
Thanks for your help! This was a minor problem, but it's nice to know that everything is working the way it's supposed to now.
