Firefox stuttering randomly

When I'm randomly scrolling through websites or using tab groups, I can see some stuttering. At start up it's really small and passable, but it gets progressively worse until the window randomly turns black and crashes.
I've also noticed that around the time the browser is about to crash, add-ons that are working in the background return a "denied access" entry.
I think it might have something to do with the memory, I usually have 100+ tabs open, but I've the "Don't load tabs until selected" option enabled.
Once Firefox hits over 1-1.5 GB it starts stuttering considerably worse.
I've also gotten a "out of memory" message before which is why I believe it might be a memory issue.
Anyway, memory usage never gets over 80% of my 8 GB of RAM and I've noticed stuttering on just 50% usage.
Any replies are welcome.

Nothing jumping out at me, as a solution, from the crash reports, although most will probably relate to memory issues.
As I mentioned in the last post something worth doing is '''turning on telemetry''' it generates real life data demonstrating Firefox performance
* annonymised aggregated data is available publicly and to Mozilla engineers
* local copies of your own full data is kept in your profile and may be useful evidence of problems
* see [[Send performance data to Mozilla to help improve Firefox]]
If you are interested in getting to the bottom of the issue you are probably going to need to start testing in Firefox's safemode with all plugins disabled and less than 30 open tabs.
Possibly the problem only really happens with many tabs open especially with high graphic content
Quite likely '''stopping memory usage exceeding 1GB''' or whatever will improve things and I can think of three ways to attempt to reign that in and hopefully prevent the stuttering
# Reduce the number of open tabs in use (Maybe use bookmarks more frequently instead of leaving tabs open)
# Use about:memory that not only reports on memory it also has a button to reduce memory use.
# It could be worth checking out this addon it may help,
#* '' Prevent Out Of Virtual Memory Crashes 1.0.3 '' <br /> https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/prevent-out-of-virtual-memo/
#*but it might be just as easy to manually restart Firefox once stuttering becomes apparent if you no longer get crashes.

Memory issues are not easy to troubleshoot. Stuttering at 50% memory with many addons is going to be impossible to troubleshoot, but '''''5 second+ lags''''' in normal use is unacceptable. However if that is whilst opening and closing masses of tabs each with their own History and many Iframes and images it my be normal and expected behaviour. (Cacheing, or not; & connection speeds; could be other confounding factors )
If the problem exists in safemode and no plugins enabled it can be followed up and if necessary bugs filed. I am not saying always use Firefox like that just that it is necessary for comparison and troubleshooting to test that. On the other hand If the problem is solved in that configuration you should be able to fairly quickly narrow down the cause.
Using multiple profiles may be useful in testing and I can explain that if it helps. There are '''tools''' that may help if you try troubleshooting. I already mentioned ''about:memory''. There is also built a in ''profiler'' that will identify what is happening in 5+ second hangs, or a ''profiler addon'' that will specifically track and log jank where Firefox stops responding.
'''Summary''' I can not guarantee getting to the bottom of your issues but
*I can at least make suggestions for troubleshooting
*Problems caused by Firefox rather than by addons will be investigated,
**and if necessary I am sure the professional HelpDesk staff will be able to lend a hand.
* Using many addons and hundreds of tabs problems are not unexpected
**(I hate to say this but on Windows it may be worth trying a 64 bit browser for comparison.
** However I seem to have noticed; so far unreproducible; issues with High memory usage on recent 64bit Firefox Releases )

Often, with 4 or 5 windows open, maybe 20 tabs total, firefox stutters when vertical scrolling pages. A restart fixes it.
I can often work all day with many more tabs than 20 open with no issues. So I'm pretty sure the issue is not a lack of system resources.
This last time I've noticed it, it is after waking my Macbook Air from sleep.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Can someone help me when Firefox closes randomly it removes all the cookies and cache, and I am not able to restore lost tabs...?

For a while now Firefox has randomly shut down for reasons unknown. Sometimes windows reports the error but not always. When I start Firefox back up again, it does not restore my tabs. Also as an added bonus it deletes the cookies and cache, and I don't know why. Furthermore this occurrence has become more and more frequent. Just in the last hour along before writing this complaint, Firefox crashed three times right as I switch users, but not every time I switched. I am a taboholic, addicted to tabs, sometimes 70+, and this is the final straw. This frequency became more and more prominent a few days ago. When it first crashed, Windows was kind enough to let me know of the error which first occurred one to two weeks ago. It has become the very bane of my internet surfing. Someone please help, or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox and switch to the dark side that is Crome.

<blockquote>... or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox ...</blockquote>
There is no citizenship oath involved in using Firefox, it's a piece of software.
Look, if Firefox isn't generating any crash reports, you more than likely have an operating system or hardware issue. If Firefox is generating crash reports you can retrieve that information and post the report numbers here.

  • Firefox 4 randomly hangs for a few seconds

When im browsing, Firefox 4 randomly hangs for ~10 seconds saying its "Not Responding", then it returns to normal.
I dont seem to see a pattern on when it hangs, sometimes its when i open new pages, sometimes im just scrolling, sometimes i'm not doing anything...
It didnt seem to happen before i updated to FFx 4
My best guess is it happens when its trying to "Sync"?
It's not that bad, but it gets annoying after a while.

It is also possible that Firefox is doing maintenance to places.sqlite (bookmarks and history). If you keep a large history or have a lot of bookmarks then you can check that out as well. Also make sure that security (anti-virus) software isn't blocking access to files in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder].
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
    See:
    * [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

  • Firefox crashed randomly when loading a youtube video, and after restarting firefox no flash programs would work on the browser

I was watching a youtube video.
    Firefox crashes randomly.
    Restart Firefox
    Youtube videos don't load.
Other websites that uses flash don't load.
Tried upgrading to a newer flash, though 11.3 causes huge CPU usage for some reason so I upgraded to 11.2
    Videos still do not load.

    Hi,
You can try to [http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html uninstall] and install Flash again. If the problem persists you can also temporarily '''Disable''' Flash in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons''' > '''Plugins''' and try the [https://www.youtube.com/html5 HTML5 videos] wherever possible. Most of the videos without embedded ads have HTML5 equivalents. • Firefox crashes randomly even with all extensions disabled and new profile, but not in safe mode

Starting from about 2 weeks ago, Firefox has been crashing. The crashes is seemingly random, but normally happens when many pages/tabs are open. Also, all observed crashes happened in middle of some user operations. If I just leave it open(and loaded), it would never crash even after a long time.
Also, the crashes would still happen even after ALL extensions are disabled manually. However it doesn't seem to happen in Safe Mode.
After every crash, in the crash report dialog, the "Details" report would not respond. However I can open the reports using about:crashes.
Before the crash would happen, sometimes the following ill-behaviors could be observed:
    * Firefox fails to render CJK characters, displaying them as square boxes instead
    * CJK IME(Namely Google Pinyin, an IME for Simplified Chinese) could no longer be activated in Firefox, neither on a webpage element nor on UIs of Firefox itself(i.e. address bar or search bar)
The following has been tried but no luck:
    * Disable ALL extensions manually
    * Start a new profile
    * Reset Firefox
    * Uninstall/Reinstall Firefox
    * Switch from FX 14 to 15, then to 16 beta

hello Rainarrow, some other users who have recently updated the graphics driver for their ati hardware (to ati catalyst version 12.8) have reported similar crashes. please try disabling hardware acceleration in firefox > options > advanced > general & see if this resolves the issue of frequent crashes for the moment.

  • Firefox allows random adds to run on my phone in the background.

Maybe it's the upgrade I installed a few days ago, but now Firefox is allowing random adds to play in the background on my Android phone, and I can't stop them. The particular add that's been flaying is a commercial for Verison Wireless.
I recall having the same problem on the desktop version of Firefox for Windows, and I had to go through some procedure I found online to get that to stop. Can't find any information related to Android. Anyway, I've uninstalled it from my Android until someone tells me how to stop these things or until there is a fix to stop them. How is that even allowed? Why would Firefox even allow adds to play which can't be seen or turned off, especially on a phone where data is often limited. It's bad enough it just start playing out of nowhere.

    HI bozjidar,
That is strange, so there are some add ons in Desktop that also have Android versions such as Ad block plus. I have seen edge cause a crash.
You can also do not track. Please see: [[How do I use Do-not-track on Firefox for Android?]]
Please post back with your results, we are happy to help.

  • Why does firefox close randomly? (restore session)

I'll just be browsing the internet or just have firefox open & it will just close everything, no matter what im doing the entire browser will close. No error message comes up, No "firefox isnt responding" message, No script error message, nothing. It just closes.
When I go to re-open it, it says: "Well this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.". This happens randomly through my time using the internet. I have the latest version of firefox and adobe flash. Whats going on?

There is only one Adobe Flash Player, but there are two Shockwave for Director plugins showing (do not confuse the two).
    # Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.0.6.147
    # Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.0.4.144
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Using+the+Shockwave+plugin+with+Firefox
The Shockwave for Director plugin is hardly used these days (possibly only with some games on specific online game sites), so there is no need to have this plugin installed and enabled.

  • Firefox experiences random crashes which persist even in safe mode (linux + gnome)

Since maybe version 29, my Firefox has become less stable than before and started to crash for seemingly no reason; sometimes it crashed shortly after started with few tabs on, and sometimes it crashed when many tabs were open or (not constantly) with music playing. In short I cannot find an exact pattern by which crashes are triggered. Only one thing is certain, once it broke down, it kept crashing on every restart (even in safe mode or with the user preference directory reset by a complete removal), until a reboot.
I checked some threads, where people suggest that such random crashes may be caused by a flawed RAM, but I feel it unlikely because in this same system no other software (including Chromium) have shown similar problem, and on Windows the same computer Firefox (v31) has been rather stable.
Although it didn't happen frequently, the need to reboot the computer before Firefox gets usable again is really annoying. I appreciate a lot if anyone could give some hints, thanks.

  • Firefox Hangs Randomly When I Use Flash or Java

Most of the time when i open a flash or java feature in firefox it will hang, this is for all videos, flash games etc. even things like grooveshark fail to load and randomly freeze at no apparant point. i then have to task manager/end process, but when i go back firefox retrys loading the pages to freeze at EXACTLY the same point, then i repeat the process but this time firefox says the 'well this is embarrasing' tabs thing.

Hi, I'm going to develop a 2D web puzzle game
(similar to Bust-A-Move in concept) which I would
like to submit to Yahoo! for their game's section. I
am fluent in Java and C++. I am wondering if I should
use Java or Flash to make my game? I am looking for a
language that offers smooth performance, ease of use,
    object-oriented syntax, and high-level 2D graphical
    capabilites. A high-level 2D game library would be a
big plus.I never heard about such a thing like a "game library". If you know Java and don't know Flash, why bother with the latter?
Also, I heard Java now compiles it's code to machine
bytecode on program startup when deployed from a web
applet - is this true? Probably not. It's either machine code or bytecode, but not both. You're thinking about the JIT compiler, that processes the bytecode only when it's needed, optimizing it context-specifically in the process. Yes, it does that.
    Also, do the JDK libraries
feature hardware acceleration in Windows, or do I
need a special add-on libray to get hardware
acceleration? You should be able to answer that yourself. The chances for a general-purpose library "just for Windows" from Sun are pretty low. That's not what you want to do anyway, what you want to have is access to OpenGL e.g. There are libraries available for that.
