Firefox3 3.0b5 not in unstable at Arch64
It is some time from firefox3 b5 release, but it is not in unstable yet (using Arch64) but i686 had it in the day of release (or so).
I tried to switch some other repos but still no ff3b5 :-( currently i'm using:
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/$repo/os/x86_64
Or have i missed something? :-[

Just installed an arch64 distro & the FF3 in the unstable repository. Everthing seems to work perfectly, except I cannot open files, for instance .PDF. It complains about not having the "associated helper application". I checked the preferences -> applications tab : it's empty and I cannot add anything. In firefox 2, it does work (and if the filetype is unknown, it asks what to do anyway
Any idea ?
cheers !

The reason is that the firefox package in Arch is compiled without gnome-vfs support, so it doesn't integrate very well with Gnome. Try spookyets package in AUR instead: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15184

Hi all.
I finally installed Arch64 to take advantage of my 4gb of RAM and my Core 2 Duo. But I am having some problems. I don't think Arch sees all of it. It should not be a hardware problem because my BIOS correctly displays 4 gb. I left my 32-bit Arch on another partition and it actually sees more than Arch64.
Here is my meminfo under Arch64

Just for kicks, I took out one stick and both Arch64 and 32-bit see the same 3 gb.
Any ideas?Its an MSI P6N Platnium with an Nvidia 650i chipset.
I looked through the dmesg and I found one line that seems to indicate the problem.
WARNING: BIOS bug: CPU MTRRs don't cover all of memory, losing 1024MB of RAM.
So I guess this means I have to update the BIOS, according to this thread.
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1164174
I have never had to update a BIOS before, but all the how-to's require either a floppy drive, or a Windows installation, of which I have neither. I could install XP in a pinch and run the BIOS update utility but I really don't want to have to do that. -

Aka "How to use an online banking website by fooling them into using an unsupported browser".
Natwest check the User-Agent string of the browser, and block ones they dislike.
So, enter about:config in the firefox3 URL line, right-click on the list that appears, click on "New - String", enter general.useragent.override and for the string, enter one of the following common user agents:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080213 Firefox/2.0.0.12
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30)
Then check the result.
This method works with firefox 3.0b3-3.
Edit: Modify Headers does the same thing and works with firefox3, but is not necessary.

CNN seems OK with a spoofed user agent.

Compiling libtorrent & rtorrent for arch64
rtorrent is a pretty nice Ncurses BitTorrent client based on libTorrent.
3 weeks ago, I built lib+rtorrent-0.6.3 from default aur PKGBUILD under arch64 and it is working fine.
New version 0.6.4 PKGBUILD differs from previous as it gives specific CXXFLAGS options.
Is there any need/interest to switch from "old" (below) to "new" CXXFLAGS style?
build() {
cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
patch -p1 < ../rtorrent.patch
CXXFLAGS="${CXXFLAGS} -fno-strength-reduce -fno-thread-jumps -fno-inline -fforce-addr"
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-debug
make || return 1
make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
Or switch to new one which I think would be:
if [ "$CARCH" == "x86_64" ]; then
CXXFLAGS="-march=x86_64 -Os -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -fno-thread-jumps -fno-inline -fforce-addr"
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-debug
else
CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -Os -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -fno-thread-jumps -fno-inline -fforce-addr"
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-debug

Also, the arch= tag is fairly new, so I'd imagine some people don't even know it exists - in general they should be using it though.
Oh that makes sense
Haven't had any issue while running rtorrent's built with Arch64's makepkg.conf defaults flags (ok, with 'march=athlon64') as I still use ${CXXFLAGS} even on the latest 0.6.4 release. Maybe I'm lucky.
In fact rtorrent on arch64 is slower to be responsive after it started than on arch i686 (where I use the community package i guess).
Then after a minute it's fully functionnal, and's doing an amazing job here I dunno how to recognize "out-of-memory errors" unless they print something on the console.
codemac : strange. I wouldn't worry if I was you. Some others linuxtracker registered users also use lib/rtorrent. But never one has had version up-to-date to Arch's

So, what's up ? Pacman 2 never exhibited this strange behaviour (FYI).yes, in the actual config, it adds the unstable mirrors in the [community] section.
Fortunately, I guess it starts using the first mirrors, so it uses the community mirrors for the community repos, and not the unstable ones
Maybe there should be some checks for that, if it's possible. -
Captivate Displays Wrong Slide Note
I’ve been experimenting as to why Captivate slide notes
sometimes seem to change at random. Since I use the notes to hold
audio transcriptions, it was a nasty surprise to find lots of them
overwritten with notes from other slides. It seems that both
Captivate versions 2 and 3 mishandle slide notes when you switch to
Branching view with a slide other than slide 1 selected, though V3
is somewhat better behaved. If this is old news – I’m
two weeks with Captivate and still in the steep part of the
learning curve – then I plead being a newbie.
I’ve considered two workarounds: putting the notes into
closed captions – which aren’t affected by this but are
hard to see at a glance unless I export them to Word – or
always remembering to select slide 1 in Storyboard before jumping
to Branching.
I assume that this isn’t restricted to my two
pc’s (both WinXP SR2) and may help explain several posts
describing slide notes being changed. So, has anyone else found
additional explanations for why slide notes are unstable? Better
yet, does anyone know of a fix? This always remembering business
seems most unlikely – for me at least.
Here are the details of what I’ve discovered so far.
Captivate V2 – selecting a slide other than slide 1 in
Storyboard view and then switching to Branching view overwrites the
selected slide’s note with slide 1’s note. If the
selection contains more than one slide, the highest numbered slide
in the selection is overwritten. If slide 1 doesn’t have a
note, the “click to add notes for the selected slide”
message is displayed as the note for the selected slide. If you do
not click in the note, the note remains intact. If you do click,
the note is overwritten. So, beware of jumping between Storyboard
to rearrange slides and Branching to edit paths because
you’ll probably trash your notes. That’s how I wrecked
havoc.
Captivate V3 trial version – selecting a slide other
than slide 1 in Storyboard or Edit view then switching to Branching
view improperly displays the selected slide’s note (you see
slide 1’s note) but does not overwrite the selected
slide’s note. However if you edit the improperly displayed
note in Branching view, the original note is overwritten. So, in V3
leaving the notes box collapsed will probably prevent problems
since you won’t notice the error and inadvertently make it
permanent. Seems like a reason to upgrade, even though it’s a
bit thin, being the lesser of two evils.Hello Docedoc,

Odd problems with reading DVD media [concluded]
There is an odd problem I've encountered...(I'm not sure if its a bug with Arch Linux or Linux in general).
Firstly, the details:
* I've updated the systems (using "extra", "current", and "community" respositories). So its the current one (0.80 "Voodoo"). I'm NOT using "Unstable" respository.
* I've already added the user to the "optical" and "storage" groups. So there's no problems in relations to permissions.
* My fstab entries for the CD and DVD drives are default (I didn't touch them)...That is, "iso9660" and "udf" respectively.
* My desktop environment is KDE 3.5.5...And I have changed the behaviour of the desktop icons such that DVD media, CD media, and USB devices will have an icon pop-up as soon as you plug them in.
* I have "hal" loaded in the DAEMONS of /etc/rc.conf
* I'm using 4 different Linux systems with the following DVD burners.
=> Pioneer DVR-108
=> Sony DW-Q120A
=> Hitachi-LG GCC-4240N (DVD-ROM/CD-burner combo)
* There are three Sempron 2800+ (Socket 754, 1.6Ghz) boxes and the last one is on an IBM R40 ThinkPad, and I know you can't read DVD-R media on that. But it should be able to read DVD+R media without issue.
* Two of the Semprons are running Arch, as well as the ThinkPad. The final Sempron box is running Ubuntu 6.06.1
* When I installed K3b I did: pacman -S k3b dvd+rw-tools
* All the DVD media is Verbatim DataLifePlus ones.
Here's what I've done...
I've burnt two DVD media (they're just video files from last year's Blender 2006 conference thing, so its legal stuff).
One is a DVD+R and the other is DVD-R media. Both were done on a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 box using Nero 6.6.1.4
What's the problem?
Well, KDE in the Arch Linux boxes doesn't recognise the media!...There is no DVD icon that automatically pops up on any of the Arch Linux boxes!
When I run dmesg on the Arch boxes, the only relevant info I get is:
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
ISOFS: changing to secondary root
Now if I re-insert these DVD media onto an Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS box...The DVD+R works perfectly! While the DVD-R does not.
When I run dmesg on this box, I get the following:
[17179654.808000] hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplet e Error }
[17179654.808000] hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x40 { LastFailedSense=0x04 }

If I re-burn the data onto a DVD+RW, Arch and Ubuntu immediately sees it, and KDE (or Gnome in Ubuntu), will have a DVD icon popping up! I can view the video clips without issue!
Now here's the really odd part...
When I load up K3b on either Arch OR Ubuntu, they recognise all DVD media! (As in, they can read the media disc information!)...Tools => DiskInfo
If I click on the PIONEER - DVD-RW DVR-108 on the tree menu on the left side in K3b, (to view the contents of the DVD-R or DVD+R media), it can't read and pops up an error message informing about a read problem. It suggests I try dmesg|tail to see what's wrong.
When I do that, I get...
# dmesg|tail
grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc
UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc

grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc
UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
I repeat the same procedure on DVD+RW, and it works perfectly!
Should I use another burning application instead of Nero on the Windows box?
Could it be the way I burn things?
(Some DVD+R and DVD-R are burnt with multisession while others aren't.)
Has anyone else experienced similar issues?
What are your "workarounds" or fixes?It *should* work...But they don't.
I tried this...
mount -t auto /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
I get this...
mount: block device /dev/dvd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
I then do dmesg|tail
grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc
UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
If I try this...
mount -t iso9660 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
I get this...
mount: block device /dev/dvd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
I then do dmesg|tail
Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
If I stick in a DVD-R that is burnt in one go without multisession, I get this in the dmesg
UDF-fs: Partition marked readonly; forcing readonly mount
UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'SW', timestamp 2006/11/07 19:37 (1000)
It reads this disc perfectly and KDE pops up a DVD icon.
I'm scratching my head as I'm not sure what is the problem.
Could it be hal or the way the DVD media was formatted? -
Can i go back to iWeb 2.3 (.js in 2.4 doesn't let you do as you want)
After updating to iWeb 2.4 back during the summer i noticed one of the main changes was to iWebs "Scripts" / iwebsite.js file. It appears they have tried to limit 3rd party applications from working properly with iWeb. For instance, i use lightbox 2 for photos on my site (fountainsofprovence.com) and with the new 2.4 version the new .js file does not allow it to function properly. I found a quick and easy fix to this by simply publishing to folder (2.4 version) and then taking the "iwebsite.js" file in the Scripts folder from a previous iWeb version (2.3 for instance) and replacing the 2.4 .js file with it. I can do this because i keep old versions of my website just for these reasons. Like this, lightbox 2 works flawlessly. However, the down side it when you replace the new 2.4 version .js file and replace it with an older version then the blog page no longer functions properly.
What i want to do is simply revert my iWeb software back to the 2.3 version. Is this possible?You can go back to 2.0.3 , I won't tell you just yet.
The reason is that 2.0.3 will not work properly for firefox3 (there are 4 patches), without the patches firefox3 users will not be able to see your photos page, blog page and images in any page. I have two of those patches, but don't look for them; I got ripped off.
Back to you problem, you have prototype.js (1.6.0.2) link to your page... well iWebSite.js also includes prototype.js (1.6.0.?), you may try to NOT link prototype.js in your page and see if that helps.
Otherwise, you may like to consider Lytebox http://www.dolem.com/lytebox/ it is very similar to Lightbox but without the need for prototype.js and scriptaculous.js
Here is my example: http://widgets.cyclosaurus.com/Lytebox/Photos.html -
RH7: PDF generation of help project bypassing Word
All,
I have a user who is trying out the trial of RoboHelp 7 and
wants to know when generating PDF output, is there a way to bypass
creating a Word document and go straight to the PDF. Is Word still
utilized this way for Printed Documentation no matter if a PDF is
made or not?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
GregIt would seem logical that Adobe will have export to
Framemaker on their plans for future releases but that doesn't help
right now.
If the content is in FrameMaker, or could be, then perhaps
the Technical Communication Suite holds an alternative solution.
That can output to the version of RH7 that comes with it. When
FrameMaker is later updated, I understand it is a simple click to
update the RH7 project.
The only other possibility, and it seems unlikely, is to
hammer the customer a bit more on their objections to Word. They
say "because in our experience, Word becomes unstable after a
certain size is reached (sometimes even <100 pages if there are
a lot of graphics and screenshots). Word pagination is one of the
first to go. I'm afraid that it would be difficult or impossible to
PDF long documents"
Word really should not be unstable at that level and it is
not my experience, even with many screenshots. Whenever I see
comments like that, I do wonder if some more investigation would
solve the problem. I always want to get my hands on the project at
that point and try to make it fall over. Sometimes the cause can be
found. Often it is just the template used. -
Sorry I don't speak German
I set up Arch to play with it and I've been impressed, it's a pretty nice distro. I set up everything that I had working in Debian Sid (even though for Picasa I had to set up a 32 bit chroot environment) however I can't install VMware-server, in comparison it's pretty trivial to set it up in Sid...
Anyway, I've tried to set it up in 32 bit chroot and that didn't work, the install seems successful but it doesn't start. I assume it's not possible to run it in chroot, I'm not sure what are chroot limitation, maybe one cannot install kernel modules?
In 64 bit I had a problem to get all the 32-bit libraries, can anyone who has it install assure me it's not a lost case so I will dedicate more time with it? Do you have some advice?
Thanks!
PS. Oh and what's the deal with 32 bit libraries overwriting 64 bit ones... I had bunch a problems with that, apt-get would have never allowed that...I've made a mistake, this PKGBUILD is not prepared for Arch64. Maintainer seems not to be using Arch64. Probably he cannot test this package on x86_64 architecture and PKGBUILD needs some more changes to run under x86 arch. It is still possible, but you would have to get some 32bit libraries.
I have found similar topic in ArchWiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _on_Arch64
I was using vmware-workstation package from AUR, you may be interested in it. You would have to install lib32-libxtst package from pacman before using it (maybe installing this package makes vmware-server to run under x86_64 architecture...). -
6i Report Crashes at Synonym using DBLink
Hello,
I have a 6i Report, (lets call it repx.rdf) consisting of a data model and no layout.
It is used to generate xml.
I have two databases: db1 (with schema jack) and db2 (with schema jill).
To compile this report, my connection is as follows:
jack/jack@db1
In db2 there is a package called:
pkg_fetch_water
In the report, i have a line of code as follows:
pkg_fetch_water.fetch('Y');
To allow this call, i have created a database link and synonym:
create public database link jtoj connect to jill identified by jill using 'db2';
create public synonym pkg_fetch_water for jill.pkg_fetch_water@jtoj;
In sqlplus, the call to pkg_fetch_water.fetch('Y') works fine.
When I try to compile the report from Developer 6i, the entire developer crashes.
I receive no error messages.
Any ideas what is wrong here?There may be nothing wrong. With you or your work, that is.
However, Reports will crash at the drop of a hat. It is not only unstable, it is not robust, i.e. it can't handle many of the anomolies a program of its age should.
It doesn't get any better with newer versions, either. Well, that's not quite fair. It gets a little better in v10R2 because it, at least, has a crash recovery feature which saves your work in the background and will recover from that point when Reports is restarted.
Auto recovery is a wonderful feature. Now if only Oracle would get off its a$$ and begin addressing the fatal memory flaws in Reports. -
Repositories Management Suggestion
Arch has quickly become my (favorite) distribution, but I had not noticed until yesterday, that there are quite a few easily usable repositories besides the 2/3 official ones: "Trusted User Repos" as well as privately hosted repos of not (yet) trusted users.
I like this idea a lot and am amazed, how Pacman allows such flexibility. And as I consider Arch as a distribution with a lot of potential, I have thought about optimizing this (already great) repo system with the following goals:
· increase the number of packages available to Pacman
· encourage users to contribute to the community by providing packages instead of just "configure, make, make install"ing.
· reducing the administrational work for the user submission of packages (kind of automation of the user submitted packages, enhanced TUR system) and thus give the main developers more time for important things
· still providing a good quality assurance of the packages in the TURs and of course in the official repos
Thus I suggest the following enhancements:
· There should be three quality levels: Official Repos, TUR (Trusted User Repos), OUR (Open User Repos) -> nothing new
· Everybody who wants should be able to sign up (e.g. with his forum login) for an OUR at some central package management interface (like an enhanced packages.php on archlinux.org). She/He would have to provide own hosting. His repo (repo.db.tar.gz) gets scanned regularly to be included in the packages.php interface and a package voting facility is added to packages.php, so that all registered users (e.g. of the forum) can vote about this OUR.
· As somebody has votes above a certain number and quality level, he gets promoted (fairly automatically) to the TUR level and gets hosting on the official server. Setting it up like this takes stability of the packages into account as well as demand for them.
· With every new Pacman release the following repo lists will download: current, extra, release, unstable, TUR, OUR. But in pacman.conf only the official ones are enabled by default. This gives every user the stability and security of the current Pacman plus the possibility to easily use either the TUR-quality packages or even the OUR-quality packages.
If these suggestions sound good to the Arch community, I would offer to work on the necessary php/sql (?), of course closely cooperating with the devs. If you want this to be done in any other programming/scripting language, I am sorry that I can't help because of too little experience.
Your thoughts?
Edit: I just (grr... now that I have written this already) found a post saying that Eric (?) is working on a new repository management. So that's great news... is there any more information available? Maybe he can use one of my ideas as well.just a couple of observations:

to the first point ..... i have never thought that there were too few packages. Whe i installed arch there were only about 300 packages and never found that limiting. I look at something like Debian and think that there is a distro that has become burdened with too many packages and "flexibility" of the developers to offer not only so many packages but variations of packages. Think of how long it takes Debian to release a new version and you get the idea.
You also need more developers and it is REALLY HARD to find good developers Arch has had too many "developers" with "eyes bigger than their stomachs".
to point two .... when i read that people are not using ABS to build their own packages i get frustrated. the whole reason of having a good package management system is to have user use it for making packages and not just for installing/uninstalling packages.
to point three .... i think having easy and not well monitored access to user contributed packages is stupid an dangerous. sorry to be harsh but for every tom dick and harry to have access to the package repos is signing a death warrant for arch. it is an incredible security risk.
to point four ... worrying about TURs when there are not even a public statement on what one needs to be a TUR or even an Arch developer is a liitle silly i think.

well as you know AUR is being worked on. As I mentione dabove i think even AURs will require constant monitoring and administrating because a freely accessable system is just too dangerous. I think that having user contributions is extremely important but all contributions HAVE to be secure and only monitoring such submissions is very very important.
personally I do not use unstable, TURs or Staging and will not use any similar repos. I only use current and extra because i "expect" that those packages have been scrutinised enough (though this is not always true). as well, i don't like all sorts of extra crud in my files. i like arch because it's conf. files are not cluttered up with a bunch of stuff i don't want and having several repos i have no interest in falls in the cruft catagory for me. I am sure others have that view.
voting .... i don't agree with voting to include packages in official repos or URs if a package is built and contributed then SOMEBODY thinks it is necessary and as such every effort should be made to include it, eventually, in the official repos. there are alot of excellent applications out there that are not well used but every bit as good as popular counterparts. In fact when i was a package maintainer i added a bunch of packages that alot of people probably would not have even have thought of building or using but like. They may not be wildly popular but in the end they helped draw people or keep people with arch.
i hope i did not come off too harsh. i think most of your ideas are already planned to be a part of the new AUR. i just wanted to offer some concerns that you may not have considered. as you will notice many people will question qulity control throughout the year (me included) and having a loose user contribution system certainly does not help to dispell such complaints. -
Why is Amarok beta in Extra?
Hi,
Apologies because this query doesn't seem to fit exactly in any of the package groups. Anyways...
My preferred media player is Amarok. I dare say that there are many others like me in this respect. What confuses me, as the subject of this post suggests is why the version of Amarok available is a beta is in the Extra repo.
Now, maybe it's because I'm still relatively new to Arch, but my definition of 'extra' does not include unstable. That's why unstable exists. And since 'beta' by definition is unstable, it seems rather presumptuous that it exists anywhere other than 'unstable' or a TUR.
Whilst I personally haven't experienced many issues with Amorok (other than some peculiar album covers being displayed that having nothing to do with the track being played) I still think it is a rather dangerous policy to put beta software in what should be a stable repository.
Now, we all like the fact that AL is more cutting edge than many other distros, but I'm sure the packagers still respect that many people would prefer official - stable - releases by default, with the option of enabling 'unstable', other TURs, or even making custom packages should the user so wish.
Does anyone agree or am I being too safe? (and boring!!)In general, I agree. For me stability is important. But there are rare special cases, where even the RC is very stable, like mplayer for example. Would you prefer the old 0.92 instead of the current 1.0 RC?
Amarok 1.2.beta4-1 does have some annoying bugs, e.g. playlists are not loaded properly, songs are sometimes a little skipped at the beggining and faded in even if you cancel cross-fading and fade-in, I can get only arts engine working properly, ... On the other hand, I never installed the "stable" amarok version 1.1 so I can't compare beta and stable here.
