FireVault prevents Office 2008 function

I have been having this trouble: whenever I open powerpoint and excel files, they can't be opened by office 2008.
however, upon turning off my firevault, it seems to work just fine. when I turn it back on, same issue.
Any hints?
Thanks

i am experiencing the same issue.
surprised that you havent gotten a reply.
just as surprised that there arent others complaining about the problem elsewhere.
please let me know if you figure anything out.
in the meantime i suppose we both will have to turn firevault off in order to access our documents.
office2008 for mac related (and i should make a seperate post about this) did you import old outlook (i was using outlook 2007) into entourage? if so id love to know the trick. from what ive been able to research, looks like there is a conversion tool for office2004 for mac to bring email archives into entourage but not for office2008 for mac. any insight you might have would be appreciated.

  • MS Office 2011 prevents my Mac to stop... can I remove it but maintain my Office 2008? (I have both versions installed)

    Hi all,
MAC OS X Leopard... I installed Office 2011 with a University license. Now after some months it is no more working and it prevents my Mac to stop...
I want to uninstall Office 2011 but maintain my Office 2008 installation that is still properly working.
I found a terrible Support Note from Microsoft, and I do not know what it will happen to Office 2008. Any suggestions that make it easy and safe?
Thank you very much in advance
    Kind regards
    Chiara

Hello, I have no experience with MS products sine the '90s, but open Activity Monitor, choose show all Processes, does MS or Office show anything using CPU% when 2008 isn't open?
Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

  • Using ms office 2008 for mac home & student edition with snow leopard serv

    Hi all,
I have a very particular question.
I have a new small business starting up and we want to make full use of leopard and snow leopard server in our infrastructure. We also want to use os x for all our client machines.
We want to use ms office 2008 for mac as our main offfice software but i believe we don't need all the uses or festures of the business edtion and i need to seek good advice and clarity on this.
We won't ever use any microsoft exchange servers but instead willl use the apple mail servers and all the other apple server services.
My question is, based on the fact that we will have an all apple mac os x backend and client frontend but want to use the ms office for mac as our business software, and also based on the fact that we wont use the "Build your Brand clip art, Build your skills by lynda.com, the Remote Desktop for mac 2, the Microsoft Exchange Server Support and the Microsoft Windows sharepoint services support, do we really need to go for the business edition? Can we not just use the home and student edition and get the same functionality using everything else apart form what we listed as we wont need these?
The other question is, the Entourage 2008, Web services Edition, will this work with an apple backend instead of ms exchange server?
Kind regards and thanks for your wise advice,
    Neil Watson

    Thanks, Kurt--I understand now.
One reason I was alarmed was that evidently when the tech installed Office 2008, something went awry with either the key installer or the key code, because when I finished the first two updates (12.1 and 12.2), I tried to open Entourage to see if the problem I'd been having was resolved. Instead of opening, Office gave me a message that my product key was invalid!  I did find the product key, and called the tech, who will come by to see what's wrong (he's an honest guy, so I'm sure it's a legitimate error of some kind, not a pirated copy). But the thought of installing two pages of updates and maybe running into the same glitch every time made me blanch.  So I'm glad to know that Microsoft is still doing Service Packs for 2008!

  • Unable to install updates for Acrobat Pro 9.0 and MS Office 2008

This is a followup post to a nagging problem last fall that prevented successful installation of product version updates for Acrobat Pro 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2008 running under OS X v10.6.5. Days of fruitless, circular pursuit of solutions from both Adobe and Microsoft tech support provided no recognition of the problem…let alone an answer.
Fortunately, a few helpful techs at a nearby Apple Store yielded results. They were initially as perplexed as their counterparts but it gratified to this customer when each recognized the problem was real and was sufficiently motivated to track down a solution.
By process of elimination it was suggested: i) reinstall the original Snow Leopard 10.6.0 upgrade disk; ii) download the v10.6.5 combo update to bring the OS current; and iii) download and install the Acrobat and Office updates. It worked—perfectly—the first time.
The consensus seems to be that a combination of many successive installations of OS and product version updates eventually produced conflicting instructions resulting in stalemate.
Remarkably, it hasn't been necessary (or appealing) to perform a clean install since some point prior to the introduction of OS X. Nor has it since. A 'rollback' to the original Snow Leopard version with one subsequent update to the current OS version appears to have cleared out a nest of remnant conflicting instructions. Kudos to Apple's tech support and Occam's Razor.

    Hello,
You can download the Acrobat 9 updates manually by following link:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows
However, PDF Maker plugin would not be enable in Outlook, as Acrobat 9 is not support with Office 2013.
Please refer to following compatibility chart:
Compatible web browsers and PDFMaker applications
You need to have Acrobat 11 to get PDF maker plugin in Office 2013.

  • Problems with Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011

    Hiya,
I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and I'm having ongoing problems with the Office system. I'm doing a PhD so I use footnotes all the time and in Word 2011, the autosave function makes the footnotes disappear from the bottom of the page, but I'm not comfortbale working wihtout autosave running. I deleted Office 2011 and put Office 2008 back on my machine. However, since I re-installed Office 2008, the whole OSX seems to have slowed down.
Could Office 2008 cause my whole system to get sluggish? Is there anything that I can do about it?
I am also wondering if there is there another solution to my original Office 2011 problem with footnotes that doesn;t involve disabling autosave? Has anyone else has similar problems with footnotes? I just wiped my whole system and re-installed all the programmes, so I am surprised to still be having these same problems with Office!
Thank you for any help and advice!

  • Office 2008 versions

    I have a choice between:
    1) Office 2008 for Special Media Edition (1 license for business or personal use) which includes stronger Exchange Server support and also extra Automator routines, and
    2) Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition + Microsoft Expression Media for Mac (3 licenses for home or non-commercial use).
Although I'll probably never use the Exchange Server features that are in option 1, some day I might (or might not) do something with Automator, who knows? Right now I use Office for a home business where I regularly am creating and exchanging/editing documents with others in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I only have one Mac at the moment, but even if I had two, I'd only use one at a time, possibly a laptop and my desktop.
Any opinions as to which would be a better choice for me? In particular, what do people know about the added Automator functions?
    Thanks.

Since Office is not an Apple product, you'll probably find relevant responses to your problem by posting your quesiton on Microsoft's own product forum for their Office:Mac products rather than on an Apple forum

  • Microsoft Office 2008

hi there - my Brother purchased Microsoft Office 2008 for mac and gave me one of the licence codes, however - the code that I used to register my copy is apparently being used by someone else and so Microsoft Office has stopped working.
I've now bought my own Microsoft Office but am having some difficulties registering this copy with the new licence codes - do I uninstall the old version? and also is there anyway of 'unregistering' the old version as it is now completely useless...
    Many thanks.

    robrw wrote:
hi, thanks for the prompt replies!!
I'va managed to uninstall it fine - the problem is that when I use my new CD to install the fresh copy of MS Office, I never get the opportunity to enter the 'clean' product key that came on the CD sleeve - I presume that this is because my Mac still thinks that I'm using the 'old' product key, and consequently I'm back to square one as even though this is a fresh purchase it still thinks that I have an invalid product key...
    Thanks
I found this which might be helpful:
    Microsoft Office 2008
Unlike earlier versions of Microsoft Office for Mac OS X, Office 2008 does not remove its serial number, or "CD Key," when you run the "Remove Office" tool. That tool is still found on the installation disc and installed inside the "Microsoft Office 2008" folder on your hard disk, but it doesn't have the secondary function of deserializing Office 2008.
Instead, you will need to remove the following two files to have the same effect.
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
You may navigate to these locations with the Mac OS X Finder by selecting Go > Go to Folder, and pasting in the following two paths (one at a time):
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/
Removal of the OfficePID.plist file may require administrator privileges.
    Reference:
    http://www.rit.edu/its/services/desktop_support/mac/msofficeremoveserial.html
I would then add that you are most likely better off installing NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both of which are close to 100% MS Office compatible and both are free downloads and best of all, they work flawlessly and do not require any keys or registering, etc.

  • Unix command to update Microsoft Office 2008 via ARD

I'm looking for a unix command I can send via ARD to update Microsoft Office 2008. It just needs to install all updates and then restart. Kinda like apple's software update one: softwareupdate -i -a; shutdown -r now

Why go through all the trouble of trying to do it in Unix.  Apple and Microsoft made it a LOT easier.
Just download the update from Mactopia
    Open the .dmg
(for convience and ability to have it stored) Drag the Update from the Microsoft folder that opens up and put the update on your desktop
In ARD Select what computer(s) you want to install the update in
Use ARD Install function to install the update
Go have a cup of coffee and a donut while ARD does the install.
You do not even have to do a restart.  Microsoft uses a different icon for the update but it still is a package file operation.

  • Office 2008 AutoUpdate update and OS 10.6.8 file in trash

Has anyone using Microsoft Office 2008, Mac OS 10.6.8, and recently installed the "new" MS AutoUpdate function noticed any odd behaviour of a file in your trash AFTER running Microsoft AutoUpdate app to check for update? A file gets placed in the trash AFTER restarting.  I have also asked on the MS forums. I know, I wish I could use iWork for everything, but...
The file is called "MerpAD Microsoft AutoUpdate" but contains nothing. It occurs on two different MBP's after installing the lastest MAU app directly downloaded from Mactopia.

I've generally been applying the MAU 2.3.3 and MERP 2.2.7 updates one after the other, so I can't say for sure which of these updates caused the recovered file to start appearing in the trash.  There have been reports of similar files of zero size in the trash, but tied to other Microsoft apps (MerpAD RDC, MerpAD My Day, etc.), so I suspect that MERP may be leaving a file behind when it thinks that someone has gone wrong with a Microsoft app.

  • MS Office 2008 doesn't load after migration to MacBook Air

My daughter has a new MacBook Air 11" (2GHz i7, 256 GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 RAM).  We used Migration Assistant and an ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor to move her system from her Late 2007 MacBook running Lion.  Microsoft Office 2008 won't load on the MacBook Air.  The recurring error message is:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib
      Referenced from: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Word
Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:
              /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib: unknown file type, first eight bytes: 0xE6 0xF1 0xF5 0xAB 0xCA 0xC5 0xB2 0x35

I have seen several Font-related issues that can be solved by restoring the fonts using Font Book.  This looks like it is related to Netlib.
Anyone see this and know how to solve it?
    sgtbill

I have no idea what caused MS Office to no work under ML, but using the Remote Disc function on the MacBook Air I was able to reinstall MS Office using the original install disc running in my iMac.  I wasn't able to remove the previous version before the new install as the removal tool also crashed.  The new install has replaced the old one so I only have one version on the drive now.
I'd be interested in whether there was a solution possible without reinstalling MS Office.

  • HT1338 microsoft office 2008 is not working with Lion

My Microsoft office 2008 is not working, it gives me a message that this program is in use in another computer on my network.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

That is the copy protection scheme that Microsoft employs. Each Office program sends out it's license code to your network. When you start an Office program, it looks for other Office programs with same code operating and prevents you from using it.

  • Migrating branch office 2008 R2 file servers to 2012 R2 with DFSR complications

We have 1 head office File Server and 4 branch office Servers that replicate back to head office using DFSR.  We would like to move to 2012 R2 to take advantage of the deduplication features etc.  What's the best way to do this?  Do we do
a re-install as per this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/09/10/replacing-dfsr-member-hardware-or-os-part-5-reinstall-and-upgrade.aspx
Leaving data disks untouched and simply attaching them again and then do the same for each branch office?  We cannot afford to replicate the entire data set across the WAN links again.
Anyone had any experience doing this?  Any advice appreciated.

    Hi,
Do you want to migrate the branch office 2008 R2 file servers to new 2012 R2 servers or in-place update the severs?
If you in-place update the servers, you need to do a re-install as per the article mentioned. The entire data will be replicated again.
If you migrate the files servers to new servers, here is our suggestion to migrate DFS-R branch server.
    1. Add a new branch server.
    2. When initial synch is finished (event 4104 for every replicated folder).
    3. And then wait for AD replication.
    4. Then remove the old branch server as usually.
To prevent large network synchronization flow, pre-seed the data with backup program to copy the amount of information from older branch server to the new branch server, this should be lower the replication network flow during initial replication.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 issues.  Help. Excel not opening and other issues!

I converted to Lion on day one.  I was able to use Microsoft Office 2008 without problem for days, then, just today, every time I go to open an excel file it opens, closes, then gives me the option of sending error reports to Microsoft.  Word opens fine. The program is totally up to date (just did the 12.3 update).  I repaired disk permissions, restarted the computer twice.  Still, the same things happen.  Here is the message I get for the Microsoft Excell Error Report:

    OTHER ISSUES
The other thing that happens is that whether on Word or Excel when I click on a file to open it, it keeps trying to open all the recent files from that program intead of *just the ONE* that I want it to open.  I also notice on Safari that when I reopen the program it opens ALL the websites I recently visited even though I don't have that checked as a preference...  What gives??????????
Any suggestions.  I am freakingout here, really need to get into these documents.

    Hi there.
This sound awfull like an issue with the resume function in OSX Lion.
This can be adjusted in system settings under general.
    See:

    Hope this solves your problems.

  • Help with Archive & Install - Office 2008 gone?

I just performed an "Archive & Install" with "Preserve" checkmarked. When I rebooted, my dock had question marks where the Office 2008 icons were (Word, Entourage, etc). Office 2008 is not in the Applications folder anymore. I thought A&I only replaced the system files - and left others (Apps) intact? Could there be some other reason 2008 disappeared? Can I just Restore the Office Folder and Identities from Time Machine? Thanks in advance!

Archive and Install is usually the safe way to go with OS upgrades (and the way I have mostly gone on all my Macs over the years).
As Dimaxum suggests, fist looking for the Office applications on your hard drive.
Personally, I would use either Spotlight (first) or EasyFind (free from DevonTechnologies) to search for "Word", "Entourage", "Office 2008" names. And if you find the main Office 2008 folder, drag it to the new Applications folder.
As well, if you find the Preferences folder for Office and it is not yet in your (new) User/Library/Preferences, then drag that into there as well.
As V.K. suggests, it is always possible to reinstall from your source disk, assuming that you have it.
And the unspoken bit of knowledge here is that Microsoft allows people to initially install MS Office by EITHER drag and drop the folder from CD to your HD Applications folder, OR by running the MS Office installer from the CD. (And they do not tell you which or why to pick one method over the other!)
I have used both ways in the past in different circumstances and personally have not found any noticeable difference in the resulting application.
So if it turns out that you find the app folder and its preference folder, and put them into their new home of Applications and user/library/preferences and that does NOT give you a functioning Office suite, then just fall back to Plan B of either reinstall MS Office from the CD (which is usually fast, but then needs to have all the MS online update patches done) or give a try to your TimeMachine and see if it allows a full restore of JUST the Office apps into the new Leopard Mac.
(re your TimeMachine option, I cannot say for certain, as i have yet no experience with running a TimeMachine restore.)

  • Office 2008: Entourage can send but not receive email

Purchased Macbook Air and wirelessly loaded Office 2004 from my other Macbook Pro. One week later, I updated to Office 2008 for Mac. Two months later, Entourage became corrupted: can only Send email, but not receive any; Calendar and other functions continue to sync with no problem. Also, email sent to Trash doesn't empty. Original disc unavailable at present; potential conflict with Office 2004?

    Glennbradley,
It's possible that some data in the Microsoft User Data folder (located in your documents folder) has gotten a bit "wonky."
My understanding of the '08 installer is that it purposely runs a script at the conclusion of the installation to removal '04 if it was found on your system. Was that not the case? Do you still have a working '04 set of applications?
Also, the fact that it did work (and doesn't now) tells me that somehow your profile or the Entourage database has become corrupted or unstable for various reasons. Have you followed the support documentation on repairing your Entourage profile? What sort of success/failure has that generated?
