Migrating branch office 2008 R2 file servers to 2012 R2 with DFSR complications

We have 1 head office File Server and 4 branch office Servers that replicate back to head office using DFSR.  We would like to move to 2012 R2 to take advantage of the deduplication features etc.  What's the best way to do this?  Do we do
a re-install as per this article:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/09/10/replacing-dfsr-member-hardware-or-os-part-5-reinstall-and-upgrade.aspx
Leaving data disks untouched and simply attaching them again and then do the same for each branch office?  We cannot afford to replicate the entire data set across the WAN links again.
Anyone had any experience doing this?  Any advice appreciated.

Hi,
Do you want to migrate the branch office 2008 R2 file servers to new 2012 R2 servers or in-place update the severs?
If you in-place update the servers, you need to do a re-install as per the article mentioned. The entire data will be replicated again.
If you migrate the files servers to new servers, here is our suggestion to migrate DFS-R branch server.
1. Add a new branch server.
2. When initial synch is finished (event 4104 for every replicated folder).
3. And then wait for AD replication.
4. Then remove the old branch server as usually.
To prevent large network synchronization flow, pre-seed the data with backup program to copy the amount of information from older branch server to the new branch server, this should be lower the replication network flow during initial replication.

  • Office 2008 temp files refuse to die!

I apologise if this is the wrong spot to put this post, but there seem to be other questions related to Microsoft Office here.
I use Office 2008 for compatibility reasons with work (OK, I know all the arguments, but for me it's just simpler and easier), and one thing that is a bit insanity-making is the tendency for Office apps like Word and Excel to drop temp files and then not delete them when it's finished.
The files seem to breed like rabbits, and when I synchronise folders they end up even on my work laptop (a Vista machine - but not for long, if my tax refund pans out as I hope it will).
Is this a typical problem? Is there a simple solution? Or am I just cursed by the computer gods and fated to live among a proliferation of translucent ghost files, the wraiths of work past.
Any and all answers most gratefully received.

I didn't end up finding anything too useful on Mactopia, but I've been using Pages for word processing of late and it doesn't have the same issue, it seems.
I also noticed that Adobe InDesign tends to throw temps that sometimes don't disappear as they're supposed to, so I guess Microsoft is not alone in this regard.
Thanks to all who chipped in on this one.

  • Package migration from SSIS 2008 R2 to SQL server 2012

    hi guys:
My company has decided to use Sql server 2012 for the database service, Integration service as well as analysis service
The first question is which tool I should install to run packages ? in SQL Server 2008 R2, I've installed BIDS which is inside the disk.
Also do I need to install any visual studio tools? I was under the impression that the BIDS 2008 was using kinda shell visual studio.
     Thanks

    Hi cat_ca,
To develop package in SQL Server 2012 Integration Services, we use the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT 2012) which can be installed from the SQL Server 2012 install media. The SSDT 2012 use Visual Studio 2010 shell by default and can be integrated into Visual
Studio 2010. By installing SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, we can also integrate SSDT 2012 into Visual Studio 2012. However, SSDT 2012 cannot be integrated into Visual Studio 2013. As far as I know, the SSDT 2014 released
in SQL Server 2014 RTM will use the Visual Studio 2013 shell and can be integrated into Visual Studio 2013.

  • Auto deploying branch office printers with Direct Access

    Hello there
I am implementing my first Direct Access topology and have a question. We will have branch offices with workstations deployed using Direct Access for administrative purposes. We have staff moving around from branch to branch with the goal to
make logging on to the network and accessing resources for users as automated as possible. One of the questions I have regards auto configuring branch printers for users using Group Policy. The branch offices have workstations, printers and NAT modem/routers
with DHCP - but no servers.
If we have a stand alone network printer, how do we list that printer in Active Directory allowing the user to auto-configure it using group policy? If we install it on a server at Head Office, would the print job travel there first and then back to
the branch? Obviously this is not ideal. Or can it be directed straight to the printer using a script or something?
Alternatively we can install and share it on a branch workstation and list it in the directory, but would this not be same the problem as above? This is not ideal either as it would depend on the workstation being always on and available.
    Any input Direct Access gurus?
    Thanks in advance
    MIS5000

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
We could have 2 possible solutions for natively deploy printers using Group Policy without the need for any scripting:
    1) Group Policy Preferences – available in Windows Server 2008 and later
    2) Print Management – available in Windows Server 2003 R2 and later
    http://blog.powershell.no/2009/11/08/deploying-printers-using-group-policy/
Did you try to use the Print Management? You can share printers on a network and centralize print server and network printer management tasks using the Print Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. Print Management helps you to monitor print
queues and receive notifications when print queues stop processing print jobs. It also enables you to migrate print servers and deploy printer connections using Group Policy.

Meanwhile, if you have any Direct Access related issue, I think you may ask in network forums:

  • Branch office installation of Oracle 8i Lite

I have developed a Java application using Oracle 8i Lite. I know, how to extract a required datbase file and supporitng run time files using deploy utility for stand alone machine. Thus, i can zip and send those file by email or thru web server to the client for installation on stand alone machine.
Since we can not use the Web to GO server, we want to send the Branch office database and its run time files (Only required files for running and not for developing) for server as well as for client to work in the LAN in the same manner as how deployed on stand alone machine without sending the Oracle lite CD and without using the Web to GO server.
In short, we want to install the Branch office Database machine files and Branch office client files by sending only required files in email without using web to go server and without sending Oracle lite CD.
Advance thanks for your valuable reply.

  • Microsoft office 2008 on mountain lion?

I have the Microsoft office 2008 installed on my 2009 Macbook pro with osx snow leopard, if I install mountain lion on my mac what would happen to my microsoft office and will I still be able to use my 2008 office on Mountain lion?

I'm using Entourage just fine, which is good because Apple Mail is almost as bad as Outlook.  However, with Entourage, I had to delete all the preferences files and rebuild the database, as it was very pokey after the upgrade.
I'm using Office 2011 apps, and those are fine.  Sorry, but I abandoned the rest of the 2008 suite a while back.... but I just tested Word 2008 and it worked OK... although still much slower launching than 2011, which is almost instantaneous.
Make sure you have a full backup, such as with SuperDuper, on a bootable firewire drive before you attempt it.  Better safe than sorry.

  • Is Office 2008 for Mac more compatible with PC's ?

    Hi,
I currently have iWork 09. Sometimes, I save my documents to a .doc format for instance, but when I re-open it, I always have error messages saying that this thing or that thing has been modified to fit the current format etc...
    If I use office 2008, will it be a 100% compatible with PC's ?
    Sincerely.

Yes, Office for Mac should be fully compatible with Office on Windows.
The reason errors are popping up on your iWork documents may be because you are using things that aren't supported in Word (such as image reflections, or different fonts).

  • Branch Office for Webtogo Apps

Does Branch Office support Webtogo Apps? This would help with initial download times if a sync could be made to a Branch Office machine and then have local downloads by clients.

I have a web-based Java servlet application. My application size is about 50MB of data/code and I would like to know if a Branch office configuration would help with sync times? Meaning, a central server would perform the sync with many Branch office machines located remotely. Then local clients would log into branch office machine and be able to access the web-based application and go offline if wanted.
I installed a Branch Office machine but the Control Center does not have ability to create or manage Users or access to applications. Did I miss something?
    Thanks for your input,

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Won't Open With OS X 10.9.4

I updated to 'Mavericks' about a month ago, had no issue whatsoever. I have been using Microsoft Office 2008 daily, a few times a day with no issues. This morning I tried to open it and it will not open, nor will 'Excell' or 'Power Point'. 'Entourage' opens fine.  I keep getting an error notice "Mircrosoft Error Reporting" Any ideas how I can fix this? Thank you in advance.

Is anybody going to get back to me? I have done everything from run my fontbook to try lunching it through spotlight. Then I went into my terminal and re-entered the sudo code - then when that did not work, I removed the program and reinstalled it - to no avail. None of the links below help. So if someone can correspond directly with information, that would help.

  • File Associations in 2012 R2 RDS Server using Roaming Profiles

    Background Information
We recently moved from using 2008 R2 RDS servers to 2012 R2 RDS Servers. All of our users
have roaming profiles. When we migrated from the old terminal servers to the
new terminal servers, the users got completely new profiles. The only thing
moved from their old profiles were documents and items on their desktops. We
have multiple PDF viewers/editors installed on our RDS servers. Mostly due to
the cost difference between Adobe Acrobat and other, cheaper products that a
lot of our users can get away with using that don't need the functionality of
    Adobe Acrobat.
    The Problem
Ever since moving to the new 2012 R2 RDS servers, whenever our users log off terminal
server, the next time they log in their default PDF Viewer association doesn't
load, and they have to go through the process of choosing a default PDF viewer.
This only occurs when there's more than one PDF viewer installed on the server.
We've tested it with only one PDF viewer program, and the setting remains after
logging off and back on. The problem we've found is that the registry key that
    houses the default user choice:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice
when set during the session, to Adobe Acrobat 11 for example, reads as such
inside that registry key. For example, the Progid key will say
Acrobat.Document.11 and this setting will persist until the user logs off. Upon
logging off and back on to the terminal servers, if you look at that same
Progid key, it has been converted in to a Hash value, and the Operating System
is unable to read the hashed value and determine what that user's default PDF
Viewer choice is, causing them to have to go through the process of setting it
    again.
    Things we've tried
We created a GPO that runs a script that exports the registry key upon log off that has
the non-hashed value, and have it set to import that value on log on. However,
by default this registry key has the DENY WRITE permission applied to it, so
when the system tries to import the registry key through the login script it is
    unable to do so.
    Summary
This issue only started happening once we moved over to 2012 R2 RDS servers. It only
occurs for users using Roaming Profiles. It only occurs when we have multiple
PDF Viewers installed on the servers. Any insight on why this is happening or
how to resolve it would be greatly appreciated.

I would use GPP to push the value, 'not hashed'. You can give right to the registry too, so like adding everyone group to that registry branch. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/cc753092.aspx)

  • Active Directory domain migration with Exchange 2010, System Center 2012 R2 and File Servers

    Greeting dear colleagues!
I got a task to migrate existing Active Directory domain to a new froest and a brand new domain.
I have a single domain with Forest/Domain level 2003 and two DC (2008 R2 and 2012 R2). My domain contains Exchange 2010 Organization, some System Center components (SCCM, SCOM, SCSM) and File Servers with mapped "My Documents" user folders. Domain
    has about 1500 users/computers.
How do u think, is it realy possible to migrate such a domain to a new one with minimum downtime and user interruption? Maybe someone has already done something like that before? Please, write that here, i promise that i won't ask for instruction from you,
maybe only some small questions :)
Now I'm studying ADMT manual for sure.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Dmitriy,
I got a task to migrate existing Active Directory domain to a new froest and a brand new domain.
How do u think, is it realy possible to migrate such a domain to a new one with minimum downtime and user interruption?
As far as I know, during inter-forest migration, user and group objects are cloned rather than migrated, which means they can still access resources in the source forest, they can even access resources after the migration is completed. You can ask users
to switch domain as soon as the new domain is ready.
    Therefore, there shouldn’t be a huge downtime/interruption.

  • After migration to new iMac - problems with Microsoft office 2008 using multiple users

I migrated my data from my old Imac to my new Imac.  On the new Imac I created multiple logins for my kids.  My microsoft office 2008 programs will not open.  I keep getting the "Customer Experience Improvement Program" screen which cycles through, checks for update then closes never allowowing me to access the program.  Please help!!

Reference your first post - I download and use dmg files, so either I'm lucky or they are supported.
I would try the disk reinstall since at this point there doesn't seem to be many options.
Do you have a backup? You could restore the Microsoft Office 2008 folder.

  • MS Office 2008 doesn't load after migration to MacBook Air

My daughter has a new MacBook Air 11" (2GHz i7, 256 GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 RAM).  We used Migration Assistant and an ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor to move her system from her Late 2007 MacBook running Lion.  Microsoft Office 2008 won't load on the MacBook Air.  The recurring error message is:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib
      Referenced from: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Word
Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:
              /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib: unknown file type, first eight bytes: 0xE6 0xF1 0xF5 0xAB 0xCA 0xC5 0xB2 0x35

I have seen several Font-related issues that can be solved by restoring the fonts using Font Book.  This looks like it is related to Netlib.
Anyone see this and know how to solve it?
    sgtbill

I have no idea what caused MS Office to no work under ML, but using the Remote Disc function on the MacBook Air I was able to reinstall MS Office using the original install disc running in my iMac.  I wasn't able to remove the previous version before the new install as the removal tool also crashed.  The new install has replaced the old one so I only have one version on the drive now.
I'd be interested in whether there was a solution possible without reinstalling MS Office.

  • Branch Office will not host Microsoft services/servers - Sites and Subnets

    Hi,
    The scenario is the following:
    1 Domain. Windows 2012 R2.
6 sites. 1 DC per site. 3 subnets per site.
    5 sitelinks.
The sites diagram is the following:
The branch office "SITE04" will not host any Microsoft service/server/PC. Network routing/flow scheme will not change (branch office SITE04 reamins routing traffic to/from SITE05 and SITE06).
    The questions are:
Does the existing SITE04 subnets must be deleted?
Does the existing SITE04 site must be deleted?
Does the existing SITE04-SITE05 and SITE04-SITE06 site links must be deleted?
if yes to any of the above questions?
How to redesign the subnets/sites/site links?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks MrX for your response.
The SITE04 branch office will not host Microsoft-based PCs/Servers/Services. SITE04 will be used for network traffic routing purposes and will host servers from another platform.
    Why to mantain SITE04 subnets?
    Thanks in advance!
In this case, maintaining the subnets would be optional.
