Firewall - Deny IP range

Hi
I'm trying to deny a given IP range from accessing any service on our server. I'm having problems with php header-injection attacks, and want to ban the offending IP ranges outright.
I have them listed in their own address group, and all services for these IP's are unchecked. However, the attacks are still coming, and it is apparent that they can sill access the server.
I wonder if I'm doing this right, or if anyone can give me some guidance.
I'm about to resort to banning via htaccess, which seems unnecessary.

Add the denied IP range as an advance rule to the public IP (?) ruleset instead.
The row number must be lower than what the allow rule has.

  • How do I set up file sharing and keep my Firewall on?

When I turned my Firewall on, I lost the ability to share files and screens on my LAN. When I looked at the advanced settings, I saw that File Sharing, Screen Sharing and Web Sharing were already set to Allow incoming connections but other, related, services, AppleFileServer, httpd, kdc, netbiosd, and screensharingd were set to block incoming connections. I reset the latter to allow incoming connections but was still unable to access my computer from another. Once I turned off the Firewall, I was able to access file sharing and screensharing from another computer on my LAN.
I have a firewall built into my external router so I have some protection but I still feel uncomfortable with the Firewall on my computer turned off.
When my firewall is on even with setting up to allow incoming connections, there are lots of console messages like:
1/8/12 3:00:00.882 PM Firewall: Deny netbiosd data in from 192.168.1.2:51619 to port 137 proto=17
They go away as soon as I turn off the firewall.
I did not find the Apple technical article "Set firewall access for services and applications" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh18503.html useful at all.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • Is there an easy way of creating an ACL for denying users?

    Hi All,
I like to create an ACL that would prevent about 50 users from accessing a particular network in our MPLS network.  I do not want to create another vlan for this.
Let's say I want to deny this range 10.12.16.20 - 50   from accessing 10.3.0.0 network but allow then access to everthing else.  Is this how to do it?
    Access-list 101 deny 10.12.16.20  0.0.0.0  10.3.0.0  0.0.255.255
    Access-list 101 deny 10.12.16.21  0.0.0.0  10.3.0.0  0.0.255.255
    Access-list 101 deny 10.12.16.22  0.0.0.0  10.3.0.0  0.0.255.255
-- this will go continue down to .50
Access-list 101 permit ip any any
Can I do something like this?
    Access-list 101 deny 10.12.16.20 - 50  0.0.0.0 10.3.0.0  0.0.255.255
    Access-list 101 permit any any
    Thanks

What Karsten has suggested, would be the "cleanest" approach, but if the IOS doesn't support it, what Rick suggested would be the way to do it using the fewest ACEs.
If using Rick's approach, as he mentioned you can set ACEs on binary boundaries, variations on the "theme" might be to include a bigger block than needed, if the overage isn't harmful.  For example, when trying to exclude hosts 20 .. 50 one ACE could block 0 .. 63.
Also remember you can mix permits and denies.  So say you wanted to block just 8 .. 63, you could permit 0..7, block 0..63 and then permit any.  Depending on your requirement, mixing permits and denies might require the fewest ACEs in your ACL.
Of course the disadvange of a complicated ACL, it's harder to understand.  However, on a sofware based router, the shorter ACL might perform better.

  • Dynamic ports and firewall?

    Hello:
I'm running a firewall and want to back it up using OSB. I'm trying to find out the range of dynamic ports that OSB uses (in addition to 400 and 10000) so I can open them up.
I can't find it anywhere in the documentation. I only find this reference as part of the Windows installation section:
If your Windows host is protected by a firewall, the firewall must be configured to permit Oracle >Secure Backup daemons on the host to communicate with the other hosts in your administrative >domain. Oracle Secure Backup includes daemon components that listen on ports 400 and 10000, >as well as other dynamically assigned portsWe can allow full access from our backup server to all ports on the firewall, but that is NOT a preferred solution! :-)
    Thanks!

The range of port numbers should be above 20,000 but below 32,000 (ie 20,000 - 20,024) in addition to ports 400 and 10000.
The number of ports needed is calculated by multiplying the # of concurrent OSB activities by 5. Or, by the # of tape drives (inside the firewall) and the # of clients (outside the firewall).
    Steps:
    1) On Firewall, open desired range of ports plus 400 and 10000.
    2) Edit the /etc/services file on both the admin host and the client to use:
    ob-daemon-low <port low #>/tcp
    ob-daemon-high <port high #>/tcp
These parameters are based on ports you select for OSB (from step #1 above).

  • Opening port in Firewall to allow media sharing with PS3

What I'm trying to do: Stream media from my G5 to my PlayStation3 using Nullriver's Media Link.
It would not work and I've determined that it's the Firewall that's the problem. I've read elsewhere that the firewall in my router (Airport extreme) will suffice and that the G5's firewall is redundant. Even if that is true I'm still puzzled as to why I couldn't open a hole in the firewall.
I turned on Firewall Logging under advanced in the sharing preference panel, then told the PS3 to search for media servers.
Looking at the ipfw log in Console tells me "...ipfw: 12190 Deny TCP 10.0.1.5..."
So 12190 must be the port that needs to be open for things to work, right?
Here's where I must be goofing up... I go to system preferences>>Sharing>>Firewall.
Then click "New." From the Port Name pop-up, I select Other and then name the hole I intend to open.
Then in the field "TCP Port Number(s)" I enter 12190.
My new item now appears in the list on the firewall pane with a check next to it and when the mouse hovers over the item the tag that pops us tells me that all network traffic on port 12190 is being let through.
Meanwhile in the background, Console reports every minute that the PS3 is being denied access at that port!
    I tried restarting the system.
It would be nice to know if it is indeed true that the firewall in OSX is redundant.
But more puzzling is why I can't get this port to open.
    Thanks!

    Still no luck.
Tried deleting that pref file. Reboot. Created new port opening as before. Still shows that same symptoms.
Tried WaterRoof. When I call up the static rules, it shows the port in question.
"allow tcp from any to any dst-port 12190"
I selected it in the list, clicked the button to edit it, changed nothing, then clicked apply. (I did this in case maybe Waterroof needed to "nudge" things to get them to work right. After this, I was unable to change any settings on the Firewall using System Preferences.
Maybe I'm not using WaterRoof right.
Strange that when I used Terminal as you suggested, it shows a firewall deny at 12190, but WaterRoof says the rule is to allow.
Could there be something wonky going on with the Airport Extreme?
To my non-network savvy brain that doesn't make sense but I bring it up since it's the only other device involved.
If I turn off the firewall on my G5 using System Preferences then everything works fine. Would the Airport "know" what the firewall on my computer was doing?
It's my understanding that the Airport Extreme's firewall protects the network from outside traffic, not that it would protect devices on the network from each other.
I was going to try opening a port on the Airport, but the fields in the Airport Utility are more complicated than those in System Preferences. Figured I should wait before I did anything stupid.
The next thing I'll try is running MediaLink on my wife's Intel iMac. She's running 10.4.11, too, but if I can open a port on her machine, that will narrow things down. Will report back tomorrow.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
According to the log, it seems that TMG firewall denied the request and replied with an HTTP 407 response, indicating that proxy authentication was required. This was done because the Forefront TMG firewall did not have any access rules which would allow
the anonymous request. Please check if you have configured related access rules.
When did you recieve this log? Is there anyting wrong? Which authentication method you have used, Kerberos, NTLM or other?
It seems that each time a web proxy client requests a resource through a Forefront TMG firewall that requires NTLM authentication the client is actually denied twice during the transaction before being successfully authenticated and allowed access. When
the Forefront TMG firewall is configured to use Kerberos there is only a single denied request and HTTP 407 response and then contact a domain controller and obtain a Kerberos ticket to present to the TMG firewall to gain access to the resource.
If you configured the TMG clients with a certain proxy name, please make sure you typed the TMG's domain computer name only (not IP address nor alias).
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Home sharing firewall problem

I'm trying to set up home sharing between a macbook pro running 10.4.11 and a powermac G4 running 10.5.8.
On the G4 I've set iTunes sharing to allow incoming connections in System Preferences/Security/Firewall, but a look at the log show that the G4's firewall is denying the connection attempt from the Macbook. Going the other way (playing and sharing from the Macbook to the G4) works fine.
I can get it all to work if I turn off the firewall, but obviously I'd rather have the firewall on.
In System Preferences/Sharing on the G4 the computer name was empty. I changed it to Leo to see if it made a difference with the firewall and it didn't. I continued messing around a bit and later I saw an entry in the console (which unfortunately is now overwritten so I don't know exactly what it said) saying something about the computer name and it reassigned a name instead of Leo, "PowerMac-0003938D88-2".
I continued messing around with settings and then when turned the firewall back on it started working properly and allowing the Macbook to connect to iTunes.
After thinking about this overnight, I started thinking this may be connected to another problem I've been having with the G4. I've had ongoing issues with DHCP assigning 169 address. As this machine isn't used as my main computer, everytime I shut it down I've just been deleting the SystemConfiguration folder so when I boot back up I get the correct IP address assigned to be able to be online. This works and is easy so I haven't bothered to investigate it further. I'm assuming this is why the G4 computer name is blank.
I've since trashed the System Configuration folder again, so I'm back to where I started with the firewall denying connection attempts to iTunes even though it is set to allow. I've tried to follow my previous steps (giving the computer a name in System Preferences/Sharing) to get it to work but haven't had any luck.
Is there a way to force the system to assign a name to my computer?  Or any other insights into what may be the problem would be much appreciated!

I was having the same problem.  Simple solution that worked for me:
    1. Under Security/Firewall, remove iTunes access allowance (-).
    2. Set it to allow all incoming connections.
    3. Restart computer.
    4. Open Settings/Security/Firewall
    5. Set access for specific services and applications.
    6. Add ( + ) iTunes access and allow incoming connections.
For me, it seemed the firewall was just getting stuck.  Don't know how it will hold up long term.
    Good luck.

  • Is this the flashback malware?

Please look at these logs and tell me if these names and addresses look legit.  Ever since january 12th I have had lots of problems with my computer. running slow, freezing up, my user permmisions changed, and sleep schedule changed, things like that. So I wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled Lion using Lion's internet reinstall through the recovery partition and this is the very first few minutes of logs. Also I noticed after the HD wipe that partition still had 3 folders and 2 files and about 250mb of the drive unaccounted for not including the few gigs gone from formatting. pay close attention to the 3rd log a darwin kernel from January 12th and then half way through another log connecting to abidjan africa and then torward the end some wierd connections and like remote keyboard connections. By the way after the reinstall I still have the same problems and they're worse then before. Please help

I watched it happpen while all internet conections were off.  I had my identity stolen, my facebook password changed, my email accounts closed out. and my firmware password changed all within two weeks of the origninal boot date

  • Testing Single Signon partner apps on local dev server

We're just starting to look at hooking our new webapp into the Single Signon Server. What I don't see, at the moment, is a good way of continuing to test a SSO application on local machines so that it can be accessed through SSO when deployed to the server.
The application will have to pick up some user information from the signon to decide which data is accessible. Is there some kind of dummy SSO connection, or should I write one? How have people coped?

Oops! Sorry for multi-posting. Our firewall denied that the posting had happened and I tried again!

  • Oracle Linux 6.1 : No Internet Connection.

I am not able to connect to the Internet with Oracle Linux 6.1.First,I had Oracle Linux 6.0 installed and running normally with normal Internet connection.I did an upgrade(upgrade option of the installer) and I ended up with No Internet connection.I thought that could be a problem with the option upgrade so I did a complete fresh install and NO LUCK I faced the same problem. The hint that can lead to the resolution of the problem is: When I had Internet connection the Gnome widget "green spinning wheel" was automatically turned on and searching for connection when I turned on my home router(as with other Gnome distros),and now I turn on my home router and nothing moves the "foreground/background computers" Gnome network widget stays the same No Connection. When I MANUALLY click on that widget and choose "System eth0" the "green spinning wheel" widget searching for connection appears and "CONNECTS" but in fact it is misleading because I still have no connection,I tested with Firefox for example. When I do ifconfig everything seems normal : interface etho with IP address 192.168.1.64(typical in home routers) gateway 192.168.1.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast adress 192.168.1.255 etc.,I did ifdown eth0 and immediately ifup eth0 but NO LUCK,so is this a dhcp that came with 6.1 problem or other known bug? anything that I can test/do?
    Thanks.

I prefer using such a router as a bridge - it enables different PCs on that router to make separate PPPoE connections. E.g. one can connect using an Internet ISP account and another can connect to a private corporate network.
To check whether the router makes a successful connection to the ISP, you should use the web browser sysadmin interface of the router. You can view the authentication details it needs to use, check the router logs and so on.
From a Linux perspective, I do not see anything specifically interfering with that. The two basic issues that comes to mind is a Linux firewall (denying you access via that router), or a broken routing table.
You can use the +iptables --list+ command to check whether there are firewall rules in place - or do a firewall shutdown using +/etc/init.d/iptables stop+.
The routing table can be checked with the route command.
You can also consider setting DHCP up on the router and using DHCP on your computers - that way the network interfaces on the client side is automatically configured and usually less can go wrong this way then having to manually (and correctly) configure the IP stack and interfaces on the client side.

  • Unable to play youtube videos - using proxy (squid)

Youtube videos do not play in my configuration. Most youtube content appears, but attempting to play a video results in a popup message "This movie could not be played". Sorry for the length of the post, but I'm trying to get enough documentation down here to save some time for the next person who runs into this.
    My basic network configuration is:
    ipod->wireless-router->squid-proxy->pix->internet
*I am analyzing logfiles from the proxy and the pix, and I have network traces from the proxy.
There are 2 issues so far with proxy access from the youtube application on the fw v2.2 ipod touch. After hitting the first issue, I made a call to tech support who pointed me to an older apple discussion thread about a similar issue which indicated the problem could be fixed by "reconfiguring the proxy server", but no details were given in that discussion thread about exactly what needed to be 'reconfigured'. I believe have figured out what was going wrong, and I document it as issue 1 below in case anyone else runs into it.
Issue 1 (which I managed to get solved) is that the youtube application sends a 'Host:' header pointing to gdata.youtube.com, but the requested url is actually iphone-wu.apple.com. Squid rewrites the 'host' header to iphone-wu.apple.com, and the target server fails the request with a 404. A solution (for squid) is to use a redirector to rewrite these url's to actually go to gdata.youtube.com and to set the 'urlrewrite_hostheader off' value.
Unfortunately, resolving issue #1 was not sufficient to get youtube off the launch pad:
Issue 2 (which seems unsolveable at the moment) is that the youtube application is ignoring proxy settings for some of its content requests. In addition to the proxy requirement, I have egress firewalling and logging set up. I observe the youtube application asking for many url's via the proxy and then I observe the egress firewall deny an attempt at a direct access to port 80 on an external server BYPASSING the proxy settings. Without opening up the egress firewall rules (and thereby disable requirement for a proxy), this makes the youtube application inoperative.
If anyone has some insight on how I can get this working, I'd appreciate it. I will attempt another support call tomorrow with my logfiles in hand...

Thanks for posting! -- I'm glad the info is helpful to you. There is more that I have been deliberately keeping quiet about while trying to work through a support call that was logged 27-dec-08. Without going into a lot of detail, the support call is still open, and I'm still working on getting a resolution from apple engineering. I hope that by providing this information, my support call doesn't get terminated as having been "solved" - which it most definitely has not been. It is my belief that only a firmware update will fix this.
(And as an aside ... I've spoken with three or four support reps at apple, and all have been very nice and have tried to help out! I've been quite pleased with the front end to their support org. I just really want to hear that someone has LOOKED at the code and found the error and it will be fixed in a future update!)
A work-around for the youtube and itunes applet failures is to set your squid up as a transparent proxy. That way, the network accesses that these applets make that attempt to bypass the proxy are hidden and the applets "work".
I would most certainly appreciate any further corroboration of this misbehavior -- more than one site being able to demonstrate these applets bypassing the proxy would be quite helpful.
(Note also that the lastest firmware 2.2.1 also exhibits this issue)
    Thanks.

Whcih ports are open? If you have a firewall having a range of ports open will not do the job. You have to configure your BOBJ services (for CR you need to setup the OFRS, IFRS, CMS and RAS) to work over a firewall.
You can find more information about this in the BOE admin guide. hich version of BOBJ do you use?
    Regards,
    Stratos
PS: Does your BOBJ machine have more than one network interfaces/ip addresses/hostnames?

  • Nexthop keepalive

    hi
    Question...?
Is CSS check nexthop keepalive with ICMP?
    [firewall]--[CSS]
From above topology, If firewall deny any icmp packet, then What will be happen on CSS's keepalive status?
    When Show keepalive-summary,
    Is Nexthop down?
    plz answer me.

    Hi,
the CSS is only probing if you configuring a keepalive otherwise no keepalive check is done afaik.
The CSS will declare any service down if the CSS does not get any response to the configured queries. This causes the service to be down after the configured retries are exceeded. In your case if the FW is denying/not answering any ICMP-request and you are probing the FW with ICMP the FW is declared as being down from the CSSes point of view.
    Kind Regards,
    Joerg

  • Basic ACL question

Hi - in an extended TCP ACL - is there a way to permit or deny a range of port numbers in a single line? I know the port operators (gt, lt, eq, neq) - but they don't seem to accomplish this? Also - can someone recommend a good link for further info? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Jim Woodward

    Jim
Yes there is a way to permit or deny a range of ports. There is now a range option in the configuration of extended access lists. Here is an example from one of our operational access lists which uses the range option:
    access-list 121 deny tcp any range 0 65535 any range 0 65535 log-input
This particular example is used in part of our
RFP check and specifies a very wide range. Most of the time you would want a more narrow range.
You can configure a range on the source port, on the destination port, or on both (as this example does).
    It works well.

  • No bluetooth connection after latest security update

Since I said ok to the last security update my MacBook Pro isn't able to connect to my iPhone.
It shows up in the list but when I click "connect" there shows up "bluetooth networt not available".
    I did a SMC reset.
    I removed all bluetooth preferences.
But the problem is still the same.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Here's a little bit more info:

When I click connect ... for short time it's connected, the error message appears.
