Firewalls and WLE

IHAC who is using WLE5.1, wants to get some recommendations on the number of
ports they need to reserve for a firewall which essentially sits in between
their WLE clients and servers. Keeping in mind that once the client requests
comes into a WLE domain at a known ISL port, the ISL process hands this
request off to an ISH process and assigns a unique port dynamically for the
ISH which in turn process the requests. So it appears to me that a remote
client transaction takes up two different ports to fulfill the transaction,
one to get into the WLE domain at a known ISL port and other one back to the
client after ISH takes up the request. So if this is the case I would
recommend having a range of ports to be reserved at the firewall depending
on the number of ISH's I would like to have for the application. For eg. in
the range of 1000 - 1010 ( for 10 ISH's). Well, if this is not the case I
would like to know whether its just only ISL port that matters to the
firewall and ISH ports are just WLE internal ports and are not exposed to
the outside world.
Thanks for any help.

If your client is using Java callbacks, be aware that a client exposed IOR will contain the
clients hostname, and not it's IP meaning that each client must either be in the servers
DNS or .hosts file, In addition if the client is behind a firewall you'll have to open that
firewall to allow the servers callback connection through (ie: it initiates a new connection
back to the client rather than reusing the client initiated one )
All in all, if your client is using callbacks in an internet scenario they will have to
look at it a bit closer ;-)
cheers,

The router is in your house.
In a nutshell, a modem communicates with the Internet and brings a single communications link to your house,  The router takes that single link and divides it up among many links, both wired and wireless, to support many devices in your house.  The router and the modem may be separate physical boxes or, more commonly, they're in the same enclosure.
Unfortunately, if there is a firewall in the router, you will need help.  I don't think that it's a good idea to try to walk you through it via the forum.  You should contact the router supplier and have them walk you through the investigation.

What is difference between WLS and WLE?
    Thanks
    harden

WLS is the WebLogic Server which is primarily a J2EE compliant APP
Server. Applications can only be written in Java(or shall I say-- can
primarily be written in Java ). WLS comes originally from WebLogic, the
    company that BEA bought.
WLE is a CORBA compliant ORB and the TUXEDO TP engine packaged into
one.It has nothing to do with the original company WebLogic-BEA renamed
it from M3 to WLE. BEA bought ObjectBroker from DEC and TUXEDO I think
from AT&T and merged them together. They have made the recent version
    J2EE compliant.
WLE enables cross-platform/cross language development. It supports Java,
C++, Active X clients and server currently. (You can have a Java Client
talking to a C++ Server. BEA advertises WLE for medium to large
enterprise systems and WLS for others especially web based applications

ps ax showed me that no ora_* tasks were started. Finally I solved the problem. The $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart script searches for the version of Oracle with an awk request. This request is wrong for the Linux version. It checks for $ORACLE_HOME/bin/svrmgrl and then makes an awk request. The correct request is:

  • Firewalls and Imacs

Context: Parents windows PC just died. They are considering buying a Mac but they have lots of concerns about viruses and firewalls.
Now I know and they do to, that viruses for macs are a rare thing, however they want to install parallel and run XP in the virtual machine.
If they do this what sort of virus protection / firewall will they need if any?

When you run Windows you will need anti-virus protection for Windows. Windows is not OS X, so any Windows viruses and malware can infect the Windows installation whether you run Windows through Parallels, VM Fusion, of direct boot. Windows installs and usually automatically activates its own built-in firewall.
Such protection concerns on the OS X side are generally unwarranted. See the following:
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • DSL - Firewalls and Virus Protection

Tonight I am going to try to hook-up DSL to our new G5. (My old iMac used dial-up) First, I hear about firewalls, but don't really know what they are. All I know is that they keep out the "bad guys". What are they and do I need one? What about virus protection? If needed what program is recommended? Any other pointers that you think I will need for setting up the DSL is appreciated.
After reading previous postings I think that I will use a wired DSL hook up even though I have the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Mandy: A. Firewall = yes; B. Virus protection = no.
To activate your firewall protection after you successfully get your DSL activated, go to system preferences>Internet and Networking> Sharing> Firewall. You simply click to activate and you are good to go. You can fine tune it if that suits you. Firewalls act as armor against people gaining access/control of your computer. [It won't keep viruses out, but see below]. Since you used to have dial-up, firewalls weren't as important since you logged off after each use. Not so high speed connections, which remain on unless you shut off your computer.
The general consensus is that an anti-virus program is not needed for macs.

  • Differentiation of WLS and WLE

I am trying to identify the differentiation of the WebLogic product lines and have
not found clear concise information that would describe to me what the difference
of each product is. I am starting a project for a distributed app and want to
identify a platform and what features I may need without having to buy an additional
product in the future if I need some features from one but not the other.
Does anyone have some information pertaining to the differentiation of the products
    that Bea has to offer?
    Anything would be helpful.
    Richard

    Richard,
WLS is a java application server
Tuxedo is a C/C++/COBOL application server
WLE is a bundle of the above 2 products.
At a high level, your decision is driven by your choice of programming
language, java = WLS, C/C++/COBOL=Tuxedo, a mixture of java and non-java
    = WLE
    I hope that helps some.
    Regards,
    Peter.

  • Firewalls and WTK network access on startup

There was a recent change in our corporate network, and now the WTK doesn't work for any of our developers. On startup, the emulator shows a blank screen and then exits without giving an error message. If we disable our network cards, we can get the emulator to run, but since our app requires the network, this doesn't do us much good.
Obviously, our network must have some kind of firewall enabled, and the app must be contacting some sort of server on startup. Does anyone know the specific server that the emulator is trying to contact? Our IT department can't open the firewall unless they know this information.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

I was on the phone with an apple tech for two hours, we managed to update itune program on computer, but by that time the phone was dead and would not show up as a divice.  She told me to let the phone charge, then plug it in and it might recognise my phone, which it did.  I followed the directions and now my iphone is a nice paperweight.  She also told me she would email a case number and some articles which would guide me through the process if it did not work.  I did not receive them!!  My iphone cannot be restored (error 1611).  I have removed all security ware as it suggested.  I even took down the windows firewall... I have tried everything  (except of course I cannot try what they suggest I adjust on my phone because it is frozed FOREVER!!!  Please help me!!

  • Firewalls and IP blockers for 10.3.9

I've got some issues here concerning installing an Internet Protocol IP blocker.
The reason is simple, to stop hackers and other agents from getting in to see my IP address and to keep spies out when possibly sharing files online. There is some freeware out there called PeerGuardian2, which comes highly recommened from the P2P community. But it only works with 10.4.x. I tried finding an older version but none exists that I know of. But today I found a free download on Version Tracker, and upgrade for DoorStop1.1. It's a 30 day trial once you activate it. The software package costs $39.95. I don't know how they can charge so much when PeeGuardian2 is a free download. DoorStop does bascically the same thing, blocks attacks on your IP address and shows you a list of unwanted visitors.. who you can keep out.
I've also read that Mac OS X firewall isn't enough to keep out unwanted attacks and spies. Though some argue Macs are pretty immune to attacks, though I'm not so sure. I've got Norton Personal Firewall for Mac OS X but I'm not sure that's enough. What do you think?
Does anyone here have any experience with P2P file sharing with Mac OS 10.3.9, Safari, IP blockers and any advice they want to give?

    Edit:
I should reply to clarify I'm not talking about massive downloading of DVDs and new CDs before they reach the market.. and I should have probably put this topic in the folder for 10.3.9 but somehow I felt it could go in here. But I will probably do just that.
