Firewire Card Recommendation for Duende and/or Ensemble

I am in the process of moving from a PPC to a Quad core 3.0 machine. Can anyone recommend a PCIE firewire card for running the Duende or the Apogee card?
I'm looking for something with 800 and 400 ports.
I've loaded this machine up with 16gb ram and 4 drives, is there anything I need to know as far as tweaks, any specific pcie slot to install the fw card as well as a UAD2 card?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
I don't know about Ensemble or Duende but my Motu works on a LeCie D2 connected to the FW800 port of my G5 without problems...
seems to be more faster... but in any case just an adapter to be sure about stay close to FW800 commectors.

  • Video card recommendation for PPro and large stills

I'll be using PPro CS5 to create a video mixing video and stills, some quite large for zooming purposes. From what I read here my video card should be at least 1.5 meg VRAM? Is more VRAM automatically a hotter, more power hungry card? Can I go to 3 meg with a card that won't fry eggs?

Hotter, not really, more power hungry, yes. If you make it a custom to fry eggs @ around 50 degrees C or less when idle or below 65 C when under load, then you will probably succeed. However, not many people try that. Even overclocked by around 20% the load temps stay below 65 degrees C, at least in my case, but that is with the hotter and less efficient 480 with only 1.5 GB VRAM.
The 3 GB 580 is nice.

  • Looking for a Secure Digital or SD card recommendation for MBPro and A540

I have an old Canon A540 camera that takes Secure Digital cards. The card I bought many years ago is not seen in the SD slot of my MBPro (latest version). If anyone has experience with that camera and the Mac's card slot I would love to know which make they use and if possible the size of the card. My intention is to by a 4 GB card, but any experience would be appreciated.

Launch Disk Utility and see if it appears there. Any SD card should work.

  • How many GB are recommended for downloading and watching movies on an ipad?

how many GB are recommended for downloading and watching movies on an ipad?

I agree. With a 16 gig you'll find that you only have room for a couple of movies once the operating system and any other apps take up their space.
The other alternative would be to look into something like a wireless harddrive, where you can store your movies and stream them to your iPad via an app. However if you're purchasing content from iTunes that may/may not work. So if you consider that you may want to dig a little deeper and make sure it'll do what you want it to do.

  • Recommendations for USB and FireWire Card

    Hi -
I am looking for recommendations for a USB 2.0 expansion card, and a Firewire expansion card for the
    Mac Pro.
    Thanks,
    Dan Powers

The Sonnet PCI USB Express cards have this problem too - for the record. Sonnet know about the MacPro not waking with it installed, as do Apple. I am sure Apple willl come up with something, I may even find a workaround, but it has always seemed that expansion cards with all my Macs [ waaaay too many] have produced unpredicatable problems.

  • Graphic card help for Pr and Ae use

    Hi there great community :)
I'm currently working with only the on-board graphic card, and of course I should upgrade as my GPU is working on 99% on large renders and they are slow...
I've been recommended the GeForce nvidia 2-4GB gtx 760, but neither the 750 or 760 are listed as supported graphic cards in the premiere cc system requirements.
Is there a reason for this or should I ignore that?
Is there a good reason for spending a little extra cash on the 4 GB vs the 2 GB card ?
What exactly will a graphic card do for my performance? (I'm not a computer expert)
My general use is premiere cc and after effects cc
    Hope you'll help. Greatly appreciated!
    Nice weekend to all :)
    - Simon

Premiere accelerates both playback and export with the  GPU. AE Ray Tracer acceleration is far more limited and will only be used for a limited functions.

  • External Hard Drives Recommended for media and scrasj disks?

I a working as a pro, but new to Final Cut Pro. I am wondering which external harddrives which would work best for a scratsj disk and a media disk (two separate).
I am concedering La Cie Rugged drives which are Firewire 800 / 7200 Rpm and do not need any external power suply (it gets the electricity from the mac).
    http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11135
The Lacie Rugged does not have a fan which makes it silent. I am not sure how it operates under warm conditions though.
I am looking for a mobile solution.
0.) Some other forum suggested that is is important to buy a disk with at least 16MB cache. I am not sure whether the Rugged drive has 16 Mb. Is this important?
1.) I am having concerns whether the La Cie would be rough enough to be "beaten up" as a scratsj drive?
2.) Will the Macbook Pro have enough power to give the two external Rugged drives electricity / power enough?
3.) Will it be less speed efficient to have two Firewire 800 drives on the same machine / same Firewire curcuit?
4.) Are there other mobile solutins for external drives which are better?
5.) Is it better to buy two standard 7200 rpm Firewire 800 disk for this purpose?

    Hi Simen
First off, what format are you shooting? DV Pal? or some flavour of HD? and how much do you plan on shooting?
Personally I have used the Lacie rugged drive, FCP and a Powerbook (G4) in a variety of field settings, cold and hot, and it has been fine with DV simple cutting stuff.
I would also say though that given the chance I would use mains powered drives any day, and my preference would be for G-Tech drives not Lacie, they do a "Q" drive which is heat sink cooled (not a fan) which I have found reliable.
I would also suggest getting a FW800 PC card to run your drives from.
Your Macbook will have enough power to run the drives but of course your battery isn't going to last long!
    Best

  • Which external firewire hard drive for protools and imac?

    hello group,
i see many posts about external firewire hard drive issues. i would like to purchase a drive of 7200rpm or faster, 200gb or larger for recording with protools into an imac intel duo 2.0. hopefully theres a brand that i can buy that will just work out of the box. i have no mac troubleshooting skills and wish to avoid any compatability complications. is there a general consensus on a no brainer drive for mac newbies? thanks for any advice.
    jeff

I highly recommend that Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC as well. They are very stable and reliable due to their use of the Oxford 911 chipset and not the more common - and more problematic - Prolific chipset. I also use SuperDuper to make fully bootable clones of my internal drive for backing up everything.
If their history for me and others continues with you, there should be absolutely no troubles for you using an OWC drive and Protools.

  • Video Card Recommendation for Power Mac G5 Quad

Can anyone recommend a video card upgrade for my Power Mac G5 Quad?
I am now running the nVIDIA GeForce 6600 card that came in the machine, but I'm wondering how much performance increase I'll see with a large image library in Aperture if I upgrade. I'm interested in all comments.
Also, is there a "medium" upgrade and a "kick-***" upgrade?
    Thanks!
    G5 Quad / 4.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I hate to say it: At the moment there is no graphics card upgrade available for the G5 Quad and the other PCI-Express Power Macs. There are a lot of threads about this topic in this forum. It is simply a shame that Apple does not offer any graphics upgrade for their former top of the line machines - but they do offer them for their new Intel Mac Pro. Maybe one day ATI will offer an upgrade, but at the moment this is just a rumor. All you can do now is to buy a reflashed PC version of the GeForce 7800 or buy a ridiculously priced spare part GeForce 7800 from a store who is willing to sell you one (there is one on the web but i forgot the url).

  • Video card recommendations for Lion?

Hi everyone - I'm still on Leopard but want to make the plunge to Lion.  I've spent the last two nights trying to install SL then to Lion as recommended, but couldn't.  I would get the Apple icon on install dvd boot, then the spinning wheel, then it would tell me to power off.  Reset PRAM, the whole works.  nothing. Finally stumbled upon some articles that mentioned that maybe it's my old video cards that were the culprit.  So two questions:
    1) Is that right?  I have two of the video cards seen below, and I'd rather not spend money to upgrade if not necssary.
    2) If it's the video cards, which I'm 95% sure of when reading the other articles - which is the best kind to get?  By best - I mean least hassle.  I'm OK to do a couple of things here and there, but rather not have to deal with firmware issues, flashes, etc.
    Oh - I do have a CalDigit RAID card, but I don't think that's the culprit... (?)
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Mac Pro 2,1
    Quad-core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz (x2)
    8 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (Slots 4, 2)
    CalDigit RAID card (Slot 3)

Wait until Lion has matured; wait for drivers and apps to be upgraded and tested.
And 7300GT is not much of a graphic card.
Heck, you might look into an 8-core X5355 upgrade which have become popular and cheap.

  • Firewire bus reset for Logic and hardware

I'm running Logic Studio (9) through an mLan Presonus Firestation and Yamaha Motif Rack XS. I have an addition al firewire card installed attached to a Focusrite Liquid Mix. The system is stable but isn't so flexible. If I change sample rates by mistake or change devices in the wrong order, the mLan system loses sync with the computer. The ONLy way to get the sync back is to close all of my audio programs and REBOOT the mac. This of course disturbs my workflow. Is there a way to reset the firewire bus(ses) through a software option without rebooting ?

    Hi there,
This may be of some help. There are a few links to other pager in there also.

  • XSLT and XQuery recommendation for BPEL and OSB

    Hi,
    1. Why is XQuery recommeded for OSB and XSLT for BPEL. Are there any specific performance optimization reason behind this.
    2. Apart from OSB and BPEL, both XSLT and XQuery has xml transformation options and creating HTML. What is the difference between these two.
    Thanks in advance!

you can create the graphical view of Xquery in Eclipse but not for XSLT
Xquery is much faster than XSLT in OSB.
Through XSLT however you can achieve more complex transformation.
OSB has its historic origins in BEA Aqalogic stable and so Xquery was widely used used even though XSLT is supported. It is a matter of choice(your standards in your organization, your developer skillsets, your re-usable libraries etc )
In Jdeveloper you can develop xslt in graphical mode though and attain complex transformation

  • What photo album software do you recommend for CS4 and/or CS5?

I want to do pagination, design and layout in CS4 (multiple photos per page, text, etc.) to create printable albums. These albums could be either social event or documentary purposed.
Many such photo album software programs are proprietary which obliges you to use a specific printer or lab. Are there stand alone photo album software programs out there, CS4/5 which allow you to create photo albums and then print your own albums or use a vender of choice to print your albums?
I've seen everything from $29 thru $400, and some which are priced beyond $800.
What is your favorite photo album software for CS4 and/or CS5?
Thanks for any help you may provide.

It sounds like you are trying to create scrapbook pages ... if so then its quite easy just to create them yourself using Photoshop. You can purchase scrapbooking kits which will give you all the background papers and elements that you need to add to your page. There are also many free kits around ... a quick google search will show you lots of them
Sets of the pages can then be uploaded to sites that will print out a book ...

  • FireWire Card Recommendation

I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a great FireWire 800 card. I would like it to have as many FireWire 800 and USB ports as possible (without going to a hub). The last one I tried to purchase was not actually compatible with my particular system. Check out below for my system details.
    Power Mac G5
    OS X 10.5.8
    Model Year - 2003
    Much thanks!

    Hi-
Either this OWC FW800 card or this FW800 card will be an excellent choice for FW expansion.
You want to avoid combination FW/USB cards, as those are often the source of a myriad of problems.
It is best to use a second card for USB.
Any USB 2.0 PCI card with the NEC chipset will work.
One like this would be fine:
    http://www.meritline.com/5port-usb-pci-card---p-37960.aspx
(Ignore the Windows reviews, as those are all due to driver incompatibilities, or lack there of. This is of NO concern with OS X and the NEC chipset).
To be complete, please read this summary of use for USB 2.0 PCI cards:

    Dacey321, welcome to the forum.
Yes, here is a card that will work in your computer.  The card has to be low-profile.  The card looks like it is while the specs don't say.  You should make certain that it is.
