Firewire drives not recognized on iMac even with Apple cable adaptor

Got new iMac.  All my files are on Firewire 800 external hard drives.  iMac won't recognize  Firewire drives even with Apple cable adaptor so cannot access old files.

I suspect a power issue, are these drives Bus powered or do they have AC power?
Not that AC power hasn't failed also...

  • Time Machine on FireWire drive not recognized

Got an iMac with a FireWire drive set up as a TimeMachine volume.
In addition, I have a MBP, connected to the network via Wifi (Airport Extreme).
Under Snow Leopard, both Macs were able to do TimeMachine updates to the FireWire drive connected to the iMac.
Now, under Lion, the TimeMachine volume is still recognized and functional (i.e. successful backup) for the iMac, but not visible anymore for the MBP.
The MBP can't see the TimeMachine volume, let alone back up to it.
    What gives ?
Is this perhaps a network or access authorization issue ?
    Thanks.

Ok, so here some more information.
iMac (Lion) with connected FW HD, thus hosts the TimeMachine volumes, connected via Ethernet to AirportExtreme
MBP (Lion), connected via WLAN to AirportExtreme
    Connecting FROM iMac to MBP:
    Sidebar - Shared computers: OK
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: OK
    Connecting FROM MBP to iMac:
Sidebar - Shared computers: Error "Connection failed"
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: Error "There was a problem connecting to the server"
I'm really beginning to think my MBP Lion install is borked.

  • Firewire drives not recognized

suddenly all firewire drives plugged into the g5 are not recognized. what could be the problem?

    Hi edaylew-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
My guess is that you simply need to reset the FireWire bus as described here: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
If that doesn't do it then see if anything in this document helps: USB and FireWire Quick Assist

  • External hard drives not recognized by imac

I am a new Mac user and have been having lots of trouble getting my external hard drives to mount. I have a simpletech and a seagate external hard drive both NFTS formatted neither of which is recognized by my iMac. They don't show up on disk utility or system profiier under USB ports. They both work on my PC laptop and a friends iMac (OS 10.6.4) just fine. I have a card reader and flash drive that work perfectly on my iMac. Apple support orginally thought it might be the logic board so they replaced it. The new one is having the exact same problem. Does anyone have any idea what could possibly be the problem?? This is driving me insane.

I'm having exactly the same problem with a new iMac purchased one week ago. I have two Maxtor drives and one WD, all firewire 400 drives, all of which mount briefly and then unmount and will not mount again. I am not new to Macs. The drives work fine on the older PowerPC Mac running 10.4.11. These drives contain my backups and aren't recognized by the new iMac. I cannot believe that 3 external drives are all going into failure mode at the same time since they were all purchased at different times and only used as backup drives, so they weren't on all of the time. Is there an incompatibility between 800 and 400?? I'm using a LaCie 800 to 400 firewire cable. Suggestions??

  • External USB Hard Drive not recognized on iMac HELP!!

I am currently using a i5 iMac running Lion 10.7.5
I have recently partitioned a Verbatim USB external hard drive and uploaded all my footage from a wedding. This was done with no problems and the QT videos could be opened from the hard drive.
    A few weeks later, the hard drive does not show up in my finder. BUT it is recognized in disk utility. Here is a screen shot;
    So first I ran "Verify" and it told me to repair disk. After clicking on Repair, I got this;
It is giving me the error message "Invalid B-Tree node"
    Here is more info on the hard drive;
    Name : Hitachi HTS545032B9A300 Media
              Type :           Disk
Partition Map Scheme :           Master Boot Record
              Disk Identifier :           disk1

              Media Type :           Generic
              Connection Bus :           USB
              USB Serial Number :           091004B3066D
              Device Tree :           IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/EHC2@1A,7
              Writable :           Yes
              Ejectable :           Yes
              Location :           External
              Total Capacity :           320.07 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
              Disk Number :           1
              Partition Number :           0
              S.M.A.R.T. Status :           Not Supported
Can someone give me a step by step on how to get the hard drive working again? It would mean the world to me as this footage is priceless and irreplaceable.
OR can you refer me to someone (Geek Squad? Apple Store?) that might be able to help me out?
    Thanks in advance!

The error message invalid b-tree node size indicates that the directory on the disk is corrupt. The way that it can be repaired is to reformat as disk utiltiy says.
It is recommended that the data be backed up first before either of this solution are done.
Since it is not be recognized by the sytem at all it does sound like you can back it up now.
    Do you have a backup?
If you don't there is every chance you may lose all your data.
You can check to see if a data recovery service can recover any data for you. If you go that route you are looking at spending $$$$

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • Optical Drive/slot loading drive not recognized by imac G5. HELP US!!!!!

We have an imac G5 that is maybe 14 months old. I know for a fact that the slot loading optical drive on the side has been used for three things in the entire time we've owned it. That's THREE TIMES in 14 months and now it's as if the drive doesn't exist on the computer. I've gone into the system profiler, it says there is no drive, try to put in a cd, no resistance, no noise and it doesn't even try to suck in any disc. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you figured out what to do? I can replace the drive myself, it's not hard but can someone recommend a good quality drive cause I'm not paying through the nose for parts from apple only to have them crap out on me.
    I feel ripped off!

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.

  • External firewire drive not recognized when re-attached after being ejected

I'm using a Seagate external drive for Time Machine backups. When I need to disconnect the drive from the Macbook's firewire port, I drag the drive icon to the trash/eject icon. When the drive icon disappears from the desktop, I unplug the cable. If I plug the drive in again, the drive responds by lighting up and spinning up, but the icon for the drive never appears on the desktop or in the Finder window. Time Machine doesn't run as scheduled because it doesn't know the drive is attached. If I briefly power down the drive before plugging in its cable, the Mac recognizes the drive and it can be used by Time Machine. Is there a different procedure for unmounting the drive that would eliminate the need to power it off before reconnecting?

Thanks for the reply. The drive is mounted properly when I follow your procedure, same as it was when I powered down the drive. Your procedure differs from what I described in that the drive is powered down before the cable is unplugged. Maybe that's the safest approach. But I was looking for a way to avoid powering down the external drive since that involves unplugging the power connector (i.e., there is no power switch). Any way to avoid the power down?

  • External HDs not recognized by iMac when using USB cable

I just bought a new iMac & plugged in my two Western Digital 1tb drives using the supplied USB cables and neither of them are recognized by my iMac.
I've been using both of these drives with my other G5 iMac using the firewire cables & have not had any issues. I also purchased an adapter (USB -->firewire 800) and each hard drive mounts ... but neither will mount using the USB connections.
Any suggestions as to how I can get the second drive to work using the USB cable ...
    Thanks,
    Brent

+do I need to move the contents of the external drive off the unit before the partition?????+
YES! Absolutely! The partitioning process erases the drive, so you need to temporarily copy data onto your old Mac.
+how do I achieve this? I'm guessing there's a piece of hardware that I'll need to connect the two hard drives together and then feed another line into the iMac ... correct?+
All you need are firewire cables (hard drive to hard drive to iMac). See Dennis' link and the excerpt here:
+Question 7: Can FireWire devices be connected in a daisy chain?+
+Answer: Yes, and if the devices are designed according to the FireWire standard, they can be turned on and off as needed. For example, all devices don't need to be powered on to use the last device in the chain. For the best result, and to avoid overstressing the FireWire port, connect one FireWire device to the Macintosh, then add one device at a time to the chain. Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.+
And congratulations on your new iMac - you'll love it; I got mine about a month ago.

I was directed to adobe to download CS4 on my new iMAC after hardware failure on PC.  The valid CS4 serial number for the PC is now not recognized by Adobe, even though I downloaded all the software successfully on the new iMac..  They gave me a free 30 day trial on the new iMAC.........Does this mean I have to spend a lot of money to update and activate the latest CS release on the new machine ??????

Purple Lobster your Creative Suite 4 serial number is for Windows or Mac only.  If you were previously using it on Windows then it is likely you have a Windows license.  You can verify by checking your serial number at http://www.adobe.com/.  You can find more details at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you wish to run Adobe Creative software on your new iMac then I would recommend a Creative Cloud complete or single application membership.  You can find more details at https://creative.adobe.com/plans.  There is also a 30 day trial available for the Creative Cloud if you wish to evaluate the newest versions of the Adobe Creative applications.

  • Panther crashed now external hard drive not recognized

I was away and a person that lives where I work on my computer set up his computer right next to my G4 iMac. When I looked at the screen it was trying to boot into start up mode but wasnt making it. I firgure it must have been caused by all the pluging and unpluggung.
I tried the resart disk but still has problems, so I reinstalled 10.3.9 al over again. Now its working but it doesnt reognize my external Lacie hard drive.
Ive tried restarting a cople of times, I cant firgure out what could be the trick.
    Has anyone any ideas?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
      Mac OS X (10.3.6)

I would try the Combo; it's worth a try!
I don't know if the following will help with your issue , since it shows up in Safe Boot, but here it is.....
External hard drive spontaneously unmounted? Try these tips:
NEW FIRMWARE: Try updating your external hard drive's firmware, which is available from your drive manufacturers Web site--or just use VersionTracker's (www.versiontracker.com) search function to find it. Be sure to back up your data before applying the update, and carefully follow the manufacturers instructions.
OUT OF iSIGHT: If you're using an iSight camera while you're using a FireWire drive, the camera may be interfering with the drive's ability to stay mounted. Try temporarily disconnecting your iSight and moving it to a separate FireWire port. If you have multiple FireWire devices, try using a FireWire hub.
POWER PROBLEM: A faulty power adapter could be causing your drive to unmount. Your drive may not be getting enough juice to stay on, causing the drive to turn off and thereby unmounting it from your Mac. Alternately, the power adapter may not be providing a steady amount of power, causing your drive to turn on and off. Try replacing the adapter. If you can't get a replacement adapter from the hard drive manufacturer, try your local electronics store. Just make sure the adapter you choose has the same connector and input/output voltage. you can find the input/output voltage on the adapter itself.
    Cheers!

  • DVD drive not recognized after Security update

    Hello -
Well, for whatever reason I decided to apply some Apple software updates today. I repaired permissions, did a back up to an external Firewire drive with SuperDuper and downloaded several packages - iDVD 6.0.2, iMovie 6.0.2, Quicktime 7.1, iPhoto 6.0.3, iWeb 1.1, and Security Update 2006-003. I installed the Security Update and rebooted. I had read about an issue with DVDs, so promptly inserted a DVD-R disc of mine with a movie on it (not a commercial DVD, footage I had shot on my own). It was not recognized. I restarted with the mouse button held, no luck. I repaired permissions, no change.
I restarted from the backup on the external drive and cloned the backup over to my Powerbook. The problem did not go away, there the DVD sits, unrecognized. Tried to see if DVD player would see the DVD, got a message "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]" disc burning in System profiler says no burning device was found. Tried to re-install DVD player via 4.6.1 update, got a message "Compatible DVD hardware was not detected, installation will not proceed".
Where to next? I haven't booted into open firmware to try to eject the disk that way, but one post on the discussions here somewhere had no luck. I'd really rather not erase and re-install and migrate from my back-up, but if that is all that's left, ok. Thanks for your help.
BTW, 10.4.6 ona 1.5 GHz Al PowerBook with 2GB RAM, not original RAM but Samsung from OWC. Thanks again.

Well, one thing I had not tried was to reset PRAM//NVRAM. I combined that step with shutting down, unplugging the power cord and letting it sit for 15 minutes. Reconnected power, restarted while holding cmd-option-P-R through the second start-up chime, and viola, my DVD appears on the desktop, the drive is listing in the system profiler, problem gone. Thanks all for the rapid responses.

  • USB flash drive not recognized on desktop or disk utility

I see a number of similar threads to this but nothing solves this problem.  Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am about to go crazy!
I have 3 USB thumb drives that all worked 2 days ago - now only one does.  I have tried all drives in multiple ports and the same result.  I have restarted the iMac (2009 Yosemite) a number of times and the same result.
This came about attempting to create bootable USBs with each of these.  I was struggling with the process on my mac so took 2 (brand new 16GB PNYs) to a PC created the live boot USBs and they booted fine on the PC (knowing this wouldn't boot my mac).  I did however plug them into my mac and they were recognized.  I finally found success creating a Ubuntu live boot with my old USB.  With that success I wanted to try with one of the new USBs on the mac.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Using Disk Utility - Reformatted the drive 1 partition MS Dos FAT 32
    2. In Terminal unmounted the drive and ran a dd command to copy the linux .img file successfully
    3. Box came up saying drive not recognized and selected to ignore (this happened on my old one that still works also)
    4. Ejected drive from terminal
5  Restarted mac and attempted to boot from USB without success.
After this the 2 new USBs were no longer recognized in any usb port while the other still is.  They do not show on the desktop nor in Disk Utility.  I checked them on the PC and they are still both recognized and showing the FAT 32 format.
    Help please!

Thank you for the reply.  I found some time to go through this process a number of times without success
    Any other suggestions?
