First 2012R2 DC in 2008R2 Domain

I have a domain that has three separate sites.  In two sites I have a single DC, but in the main domain I have/had two DCs.  One of them died and I'm not able to recover it.
All servers were 2008R2 and we are at the 2008R2 functional level.
I've followed all the procedures to clean the "broken" DC out of the AD and don't see any sign of it.  When I try to promote a newly installed 2012R2 server to a domain controller I get:
The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not replicate the directory partition CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=ext from the remote Active Directory Domain Controller DC1.domain.ext.
"The replication operation failed to allocate memory."
DC1 is a 2008 R2 server in Hyper-V with 16GB memory.  The new DC is on a different server in a Hyper-V with 32GB memory.  I seriously doubt the problem is memory.  Especially since we don't have a large domain.
The DCPROMO log shows:
05/15/2014 13:51:44 [INFO] Replicating CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=ext: received 3997 out of approximately 3997 objects
05/15/2014 13:51:44 [INFO] EVENTLOG (Warning): NTDS General / Replication : 1079
Internal event: Active Directory Domain Services could not allocate enough memory to process replication tasks. Replication might be affected until more memory is available.
I have run "dcdiag /e /c /v" and "repadmin /showrepl /all /verbose" and nothing shows in error ... except for the frsComputerReferenceBL is missing its value.  But msDFSRComputerReferenceBL is populated as it should be so I figured
this was ok.
Any ideas on what i can check?  No SBS at all in this domain.  Never have been.
Thanks!

If this is a first 2012 R2 domain controller you are adding to the domain then a variety of operations run when you try to add it that help prepare your AD for the latest version domain controller.
Take a look at this article for what is being done -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd464018(v=WS.10).aspx Perhaps take a look at your schema master as well, make sure it's available and healthy. You can check to see whether the adprep stage of your 2012 R2 setup attempt completed successfully
by checking your AD schema version:

  • Binding to Windows 2008r2 domain gives wrong kvno

I'm getting inconsistent results binding a 10.6.6 system to a windows 2008r2 domain with two DCs. The domain join always appears to work, but in some cases I'm not getting a usable /etc/krb5.keytab file. The upshot is that I can't use GSSAPI with ssh to access the mac from other unix systems.
In the failure case, the KVNOs in /etc/rb5.keytab disagree with the values in AD. Using 'klist -k -t' on the mac, I see all the KVNOs are 1, but looking on the windows side with ADSIedit, the msDS-KeyVersionNumber on the computer account is 2.
In the success case, there are duplicate entries for all the keys in the Mac keytab file, one set with KVNO 1 and one set with KVNO 2, windows reports KVNO 2, and everything (ssh) works.
This also affects kerberos console logins with the /etc/authorizations 'builtin:krb5authenticate,privileged' patch (krb5authnoverify works in both cases).
I have inconsistent results with Directory Utility (sometimes I get a working krb5.keytab and sometimes I get the broken one). I haven't seen any rhyme or reason to the behavior. I go away for awhile, and maybe it works when I come back (and maybe not). But never an error; DU always thinks it successfully bound. As an aside, with dsconfigad I always get the broken keytab file.
Any assistance is most appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply!!
Yes! I have done it both ways but still the same thing. Now, something interesting, since I'm in the initial setup of the Domain, I decided to reconfigure it to be mydomain.net, instead of mydomain.local. Now I try to bind and I get an error saying that the DNS name forest is incorrect. However, I cannot change the Directory forest from the default value, which is Automatic. So now, I wonder if its that the domain name needs to be set to my.domain.net rather than mydomain.net. I'm lost here.

    Hello,
in the PAM and in the SAP NetWeaver Identity Management  IDM Connector Overview  i can't find any information about its possible and supported  to provisioning user and groups to an 2008r2 domain controller?!
    is it supported?

AllowSSBToAnyVolume isn't a key but a value under the key SystemStateBackup. So make sure you have the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup
    Name: AllowSSBToAnyVolume
    Data type: DWORD
    Value data: 1
    Is that the case?

How is it going? I agree with Milos. Besides, we can run command gpresult/h gpreport.html

  • Is it possible for Windows 2008R2 Domain Controllers to audit when a programs are installed/uninstalled on clients and send alerts to Admins?

We have a program called Audit Wizard that we used with Windows 2003 that monitored all clients and alerted my department when a program was installed/uininstalled. since upgrading to windows server 2008R2, the program no longer works correctly.
So we are wondering if it is possible for Windows 2008R2 Domain Controllers, running at a 2008R2 forest and domain level) to be able to audit when a programs are installed/uninstalled on clients and send alerts to our Admins?
    If so, How?

As far as I know, group policy can't help us do this. If you are interested, we can take a look at System Center Operation Manager and ask for suggestions in the following SCOM forum.

  • 2008R2 Domain - Recently started receiving the old EventID 8003 Bowser in the System Log - Any ideas?

    Hi All,
I've "googled" this to death and noted the registry keys that are associated with the "Computer Browser Service."
    On the PDC:
    IsDomainMaster = TRUE
    MaintainServerList = Auto
On one of the Workstations noted in the EventID Logs:
    MaintainServerList = Auto
There is no "IsDomainMaster" key on the Workstation.
In addition, I've looked for the "browstat.exe" utility, but after my google searches, it turns out that tool has been deprecated for 2008R2 and Win7.  Our entire company is on Win7...
From what I've read, the logged 8003 messages are no big deal, but it seems odd that all of a sudden, late May, I started receiving these messages and I'm trying to retrace my steps.  The DCs had not been patched at that time.
    Thank you for your time,
    Mr Mister

    We can close this question.
From an elevated prompt, I ran 'fsutil resource setautoreset true' and attempted to remove the files with .blf and regtrans-ms file extensions from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR. but these files were locked by system processes. (They are also
tagged with the hidden file attrib so you may not see them at first)
So, I booted the system with a Windows 2008 R2 Install Disk, selected repair OS and selected the command prompt. I then performed a chkdsk /f c: and selected "Y" to unmount the drive. It made some repairs.
With the system booted from the install disk, and chkdsk executed, the locks were freed and I was able to delete the files from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR.
Once the system rebooted, the services came back fine and everything was back to normal.

  • Windows Server 2012 as NTP Server for Windows Server 2008R2 Domain Controller

We have one domain with 3 Windows Server 2008R2 DC's. Our Edge router is configured to get the time from the internet, and was our timesource for the PDC emulator. But lately we have migrated our major routers to Cisco IOS15, and now the timeservice on the
PDCe is unable to fetch the time. This is a known bug, as you can read here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ja-JP/b16de048-8642-4799-b85a-ad092e17dd47/windows-server-2012-ntp-version-compatibility
Now I've found out that Windows Server 2012 does sync with the router. That's our DirSync server, and is in the same VLAN as our DC's. So I thought: I'll set up the Windows Server 2012 as new timeserver, so our PDCe can sync with that server. (Compony
policy is that DC's don't talk to the internet). Everything seems alright.
    I've set:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:<IP of router>,0x8 /syncfromflags:manual
    w32tm /config /reliable:yes
    Changed the registry with:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\TIMEPROVIDERS\NTPSERVER - Enabled:1
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\Config - AnnounceFlags:A
And stopped and started the W32Time service. I can see that the Windows 2012 server is fetching the correct time, and checked with NBTSTAT -NA that it's listening on port 123.
But our PDCe doesn't sync. (also changed the config so it has the 2012 server as timesource). Get the EventID 47:
Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer <w2012server> after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS
name. The error was: The peer is unreachable.
    What more can I try?

It only shows me the 3 DC's:

  • Firefox very slow when first loading pages from new domains.

I've noticed that when starting the browser or opening up a new site it takes a considerably longer amount of time to load all the JS and assets compared to Chrome. Typically an extra 10 to 20 seconds, which is seriously annoying and nontrivial. After I've loaded the first page from the site Firefox is usually pretty fast on loading new pages from the same domain.
Firefox also sometimes fails to render CSS, resulting in a white page in Times New Roman and misplaced images.
I've tried setting up a new installation of Firefox and it hasn't solved the problem. Also tried Firefox portable with no addons and I got the problem straight out of the gate. It seems to be a problem with the code as Chrome and my internet connection work just fine. I've tried using Google as my primary DNS (8.8.8.8) which hasn't changed much.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • DNS / DHCP Issues in Server 2008R2 Domain

    Hi folks,
We’ve been having an ongoing issue for a while now in that some PCs and laptops (Win 7) in our company can’t be contacted by hostname i.e. if we try and RDP from one Windows 7 PC to another the RDP session fails as if the PC isn’t turned on, but it
is indeed turned on and connected to the network.
Even if we ping the host name of a particular computer that is on it fails to reply but if I go into DHCP I can find the hostname bit it has a different IP address assigned to it other than what is listed in DNS for that host name.
So for some reason when some computers get switched on and be allocated a new dynamic IP address through DHCP the corresponding record in DNS doesn’t seem to get updated meaning we need to go into DNS and manually amend the Host A record with the new
IP address that it has been given so we can RDP onto that computer using the hostname.
At present aging and scavenging isn’t enabled in our environment as we are afraid to in case it removes live DNS entries that just haven’t been turned on in a wee while.  Does aging and scavenging just ignore static DNS entires and does aging and
scavenging work in DHCP as well?
One other thing I noticed is that if I delete an incorrect DNS Host A record and create it manually and assign the hostname and the correct IP address it says static rather than having a timestamp on it. When I create the new record I always click on our
domain in the Forward Lookup Zone and on creation I always select Create the associated pointer (PTR) record so not sure why the manual record doesn’t get a time stand.
So any help/advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bonemister

    Hi David,
Thanks for your reply and for clarifying those things for me.  Unfortunately in my workplace when I add a manual DNS Host A record it does become a static entry and doesn't have the '0'
you mention, do you have any idea why that would be as I'm worried about it affecting things if I were to enable aging and scavenging.
Is it possible to just enable aging and have it remove entries before a time of my choosing or does scavenging need to be enabled also?
I still can't understand why the relationship between DHCP and DNS isn't working correctly. Sure if DNS has an A record for a computer and the IP address changes via DHCP there is bound to be
a way to setup DNS to be able to update the records it holds - do you know if my reading of this is correct.
By the way, I can confirm that my adapters TCP/IP DNS settings are the same on of the PCs that had the DNS fault as in your screenshot the only different is we have the tick in Append parent suffixes... - would that make a difference.
Thanks also for that other link, it seems very interesting and I'll have a good read through it carefully before doing anything!!
Thanks again for you reply and I look forward to seeing any responses.
    Regards,
    Bonemister

  • Disabling IPv6 on 2008R2 Domain Controllers... Best Practice?

At the end of last year I had a call with Microsoft Support in which I spoke with a member of the Directory Services team regarding an issue.  The issue was resolved with no further problems, but while conversing with the Technical Support Engineer
I queried him on another issue regarding a second copy of our DNS zone in Active Directory.  He looked at it (remoted in via RDP) then looked at my NIC properties and stated that the reason it happened is because we are running IPv6 on our DCs.
I told him we do that on all our servers. (leave IPv6 enabled.)  He then stated that we should not do that, expanding by saying that "Microsoft is in the process of rewriting documentation as IPv6 is no longer supported on Domain Controllers."
Needless to say I could not believe this.  I told him how Exchange on an SBS server cannot have IPv6 disabled as the server will stop booting, but he was very adamant about it; he even put me on hold for 10 minutes then came back saying he confirmed
that this is the case and spoke with the "Documentation Team" and the new Best Practices would be released within the next month. In the meantime he recommended I disable IPv6 on all my DCs. (I work in Consulting so that's a lot of DCs at various different
    business entities.)
I didn't believe him then, and I don't believe him now.  Reviewing the FAQ linked through http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852  Says that Microsoft does not recommend disabling IPv6.  Of course no documentation ever came out, nor have I
found anything to agree with his statements. (we solved the duplicate partition issue ourselves.)
I just wanted to post here and see if anyone else has heard of this, maybe I'm the one not up and up on my info.  Has or does Microsoft plan on reversing course on the new IPv6 technology that 2008 and up are built on?  I would think that quite
    preposterous!
    Thanks,
    Christopher Long
Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge. -- Carl Sagan

There are cases where you DO WANT to disable IPv6 on a domain controller.
Example: you have an IPV4 network and do not have IPV6 deployed. In this case if you are not using IPv6 but leave it enabled than Windows will assign itself an IPv6 at random via the APIPA process. That IP address can and does change when you reboot the
server.... So I bet you see the problem here.
If you build a domain controller with IPv6 enabled - it will register it's IPV6 address in DNS as offering AD services. Then when you reboot that domain controller and that address changes - BOOM. AD comes crashing down. AD relies heavily on DNS. Windows
thinks it's smarter than you and registers it's IPv6 address obtained via APIPA in DNS. Now that's a problem. Particularly because Win Server 2008+ prefer IPV6 over IPV4 networks. So communication can blow up even if a valid IPv4 network is available.
So yes - there are instances where you do want to - in fact need to - disable IPv6 on domain controllers. Microsoft's documentation does not reflect this but it should. At a minimum if they want you to leave it on they should at least remind you to set a
static IPv6 address if you're running an IPv4 network.
(ask me how I know all this over a beer some time)
I opted to just disable it. Despite MS's documentation warning of the contrary - I've seen no adverse impacts. Exchange, Sharepoint, AD, etc. all humm along fine.

  • Windows 7 PC locking out domain user in Windows Server 2008r2 domain

I have reviewed dozens of related questions, but none have given me an answer that works on this situation.
We replaced an XP desktop with a Windows 7 desktop.  It keeps locking out just user(of over 25 migrated).  I have disabled the Windows 7 credentials, made sure the patches were in place, there are no other devices-wireless or otherwise.
The users pc has a kvm attached for another system, we have a Windows 2008r2 server.  The user does not save any passwords, I have make changes recommended in the registry.  They do have a couple mapped drives.  Logs show that it is the users
pc that is causing the lockout, but much of the users time they are on the other system.  We have 4 other users that have the exact same setup but are not having any issues.  It happens several times a day and I must unlock their password on the
ad.  Sometimes if we wait 45 min or so it will unlock itself.  Strange considering settings lockout user after 5 bad passwords and lock them out for 120 minutes.
I have tried virtually everything I have read relating to this issue in Win7, 2008r2.
User is getting frustrated and so am I!.

  • ISSUE: "This domain controller must register a DNS SRV resource record, which is required for replication to function correctly"

so we currently have three domain controllers set up, two of them on 2012r2 and one of them on 2008r2. prior to any of these domain controllers being added to the domain there was only one, running on 2003r2. the 2003r2 server was up and running when the
first 2012r2 was added and that's when running 'dcdiag /e /c /v' would yield an issue with "_ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local" in the DNS portion of the diagnostics, specifically:
    TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Network Adapter [00000010] Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapter:
    Error:
Missing SRV record at DNS server 192.168.22.4:
    _ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local
after adding the second 2012r2 to the domain, this issue is still there... adding the 2008r2 server to the domain and running BPA it gives the following:
    Title:
This domain controller must register a DNS SRV resource record, which is required for replication to function correctly
    Severity:
    Error
    Date:
    7/3/2014 11:24:48 AM
    Category:
    Configuration
    Issue:
The "DcByGuid" DNS service (SRV) resource record that advertises this server as an available domain controller in the domain and ensures correct replication is not registered. All domain controllers (but not RODCs) in the domain must register this record.
    Impact:
Other member computers and domain controllers in the domain or forest will not be able to locate this domain controller. This domain controller will not be able to provide a full suite of services.
    Resolution:
Ensure that "DcByGuid" is not configured in the "DnsAvoidRegisteredRecords" list, either through Group Policy or through the registry. Restart the Netlogon service. Verify that the DNS service (SRV) resource record "_ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local", pointing to the local domain controller "CM-DC4-NY01.cmedia.local", is registered in DNS.
More information about this best practice and detailed resolution procedures: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=126968
I've tried scanning and then re-scanning every single entry in DNS Manager and do not see any reference to this specific GUID mentioned, nor do I see any other domain controllers referenced that should not be in there. The two 2012r2 and the 2008r2 domain
controllers are the only ones listed in DNS Manager... the 2003r2 mentioned earlier failed and was removed.

Just to chime in, I noticed that you said you have one 2008 R2 DC, and two 2012 DCs.
I also noticed in the ipconfig /all that all DCs are pointint to themselves for DNS. We usually like to see them point to a partner, then itslelf as the second entry, w hether loopback or by its own IP.
Based on that, what I suggest to level the playing field by choosing the WIndows 2008 R2 DC as the first DNS on all DCs and only administer DNS using that DC. The reason I chose that is because of the least common denominator is what we rather use so we
don't invoke any new features in the newer 2012 DNS console that 2008 R2 may not understand.  After that's done, on each DC run (and you can use a PowerShell window to run this):
Rename the system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files by suffixing ".old" to the file.
    ipconfig /registerdns
    net stop netlogon
    net start netlogon
    Then re-run the dcdiag /e /c /v.
    Post your results, please.

I thought the DNS entries were supposed to be the other way around? point to themselves first and a partner as secondary? regardless, as requested, I've changed it to what you've prescribed where they point to the 2008r2 server as the primary with themselves
as the secondary. I've also followed the steps to what seems like refreshing the DNS? on each of the DCs. Here's the output from dcdiag /e /c /v

  • DHCP - From 1 Domain (2008r2) to another Domain (2012r2)

    Hello Everyone.
For the sake of convenience and management simplification, my company is moving from 3 WinServer 2008r2 domains to a forest situation which will be 2012.  I would like to be able to copy the ADUC information from DC1.2008.old to DC1.2012.new as much
as possible.  I would like to find some assistance with copying DNS, DHCP, and ADUC (where possible).  Most places I have looked deal with a migration from 2008 to 2012 in the same domain.  This is different because the domains are different.
     Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks for the help.
    BJC

    Hi,
No tool needed. In case the DHCP server holds different other roles (like file server, etc) you can migrate this like any other computer using the ADMT. If it is just a dhcp server you can either export DB , then migrate the server re-authorize and import
configuration or you can just create a new server inside destination forest install DHCP role configure scopes and make it available for the clients and decommission old one.
Just remember that if you are using Dynamic DNS registration for the windows computers in the AD-integrated zones, you might face issues with DNS resolution once computers are migrated because they start registering in the target domain DNS zone.
