Fixed width of SCN content

After last redesign of SCN all the content is cca 990 pixels wide. This was a fashionable approach of web in 90's. For web sites like forums and blogs I would expect flexible width - people working on large displays like 1920px wide can use full screen and people working with blog as right-hand help column can use it too. Some problems like text behind right edge would dissapear by flex width, I think.
Why fixed layout (I accept the fact it is more comfortable for dev and testing)?

Earlier today I tried to respond quickly, and did not refer to the article appropriately nor entirely. Most of the response below was a mix of that article; and comments from me in appropriate places with additional decisions we made as an SCN team.

This article also discusses the fact that one is the fixed width layout and the other is the liquid/variable layout. The fixed width layout sets the width of the web page at a specific value, no matter how wide the vieweru2019s internet browser window is, whereas liquid & variable width layouts adjust their width depending on the width of the visitoru2019s browser window. The choice between these two layouts is not always an easy one. In our SCN case we chose for the fixed.

For those who do not know much about this : Fixed width layouts mean that you have a predetermined width which you will design the rest of your web page around. The main advantage of this approach is that it gives you greater direction and control over the eventual organization of your web pages.
Which layout you eventually choose will greatly affect the final look and feel of your web site, not to mention the functionality of the site. The ease with which visitoru2019s can scan through your site for relevant information and identify the content that they wish to find is almost always largely dependant on your choice of layouts. We have a lot of content on our website in many places, and unfortunately for you and also from a maintenance perspective we wanted to opt in this release for fixed width.
I picked the the pros and cons of the fixed width from the article as they are widely known to most website designers.
*Fixed Width Layout*
Pros
Pages that you design look exactly the same when viewed using any internet browser or operating system.
Images and other non-textual objects will not overwhelm the textual content of the page, regardless of the size of the browser window or viewing monitor.
The scan length of your pages stays constant no matter how wide the vieweru2019s browser window is.
Cons
Viewers using smaller browser windows or monitors to view the site will probably have to scroll horizontally to see the entirety of the page. This tends to annoy online som eof our visitors. However we know most of our users use IE or Mozilla and have larger screens ( more than 30% has 1024x) from Surveys we do.
A large amount of whitespace is usually generated when viewers use large browser windows to view the site, resulting in wastage of otherwise useful space. Also, more vertical scrolling may be required than should be necessary.
Font size changes can adversely affect the overall layout of the page. Large increases in font size can cause the layout of your page to become distorted, making it messy and unappealing.
In short: We used to have both approaches, but in the new SCN design we choose to have the fixed width approach for now. We weighed both pros and cons
Scott Lawley of our SCN team compiled it for us and referred in an internal presentation around the pros for SCN for fixed width. here is a quick summary ( thanks Scott, have a nice vacation )
Our SAP Corporate styleguide calls for a fixed width layout (see e.g. sap.com)
We already implemented EcoHub with a fixed width layout. All our communities should try to have as much a unified presentation where possible
All of CSO's screen designs are made for a 1024 resolution. They do not work that well with higher resolutions (in our older SDN approach, viewed at higher resolutions it looked sometimes very lackluster, the lines of text became so long that readability is decreased)
On high resolutions the old SDN site became harder to navigate because you had a lot of screen real estate to cover if you wanted to move the mouse from right to left
Using a fluid layout for us meant that we have to continue using table-based layouts which did not entirely fit with the image of the modern web 2.0 platform we wanted to convey.
Most news blogs and major news sites (like e.g. nytimes.com) use a fixed width layout. According to this survey http://tinyurl.com/65yjcv
Flash content does not easily scale. New page layout may need to be considered to better support flash in th enear future for us.
92% of the top 50 news blogs use a fixed layout.
And last but not least there were also some more philosophical and functional differences that we weighed of from each other : news vs. community vs. product
What we will do in the next few releases is allow the collapsable left hand navigation that then will help the vertical scrolling challenge you might infrequently have,

Change UIComponent from fixed width to fit content

I have a custom alert box I wrote. It has an optional second button. I use the alert box in various ways which may or may not need the second button.
Previously I was creating and adding the button dynamically, but because flash is so slow I have to preload the alert with two buttons.
So there are always two buttons in this alert view. So if I have an alert with both an action button and a cancel button, then I have an alert with just a cancel button I want to hide the action button. However if I set the action button to hidden it still throws off the alginment of the cancel button in my HGroup because it's still taking up space even though it's not there. If I set the width of the action button to 0 then I am using a fixed with and whenever I need to use it again I will have to manually calculate the width of the button!! Is there a way to set the width to 0 then set it like it never had a width at all?

Here is a different approach. Set your actionButton.visible = false and actionButton.includeInLayout = false then you should be in good shape!

Fix ALV column width independent of content

Hi All,
I need to fix ALV column width independent of content. If I set the width of column as 10 and when the content is 20 characters long, the column expands to 20. I want the width of column to be fixed irrespective of content. I tried all properties available for ALV column and table but couldn't figure it out. We are on ECC 6.0 ENHP4. Any ideas how to achieve this.

I believe that I have done this setting fixed layout to true, and then manually setting the column widths in the code.
lo_model->if_salv_wd_table_settings~set_fixed_table_layout( abap_true )
lt_alv_column_table = lo_alv_model->if_salv_wd_column_settings~get_columns( ).
LOOP AT lt_alv_column_table INTO ls_alv_one_column.
ls_alv_one_column-r_column->set_width( '90' ).

How to fix width of plain text content control in Microsoft Word 2010?

I try to make the simplest solution for my custom to modify current Word template without hard code anything except field name.
As you can see above image, normally text field in Word is not fixed width control. So, it may affect document layout. Moreover, I want to add dotted line below all text fields in document template.
Is there any possible solution that end-user can do in normal Microsoft Word 2010 application?
PS. I will fill all controls with data from Microsoft Access.

In PDF file, I can easily create fix-size absolute position field inside document template like the following document. In Microsoft Word, I cannot fix even the size of plain text field.
PS. Nobody use table with fixed cell size as normal form (hard copy). I think Microsoft Word is really bad choice for creating any document template by end-user.
Criticizing Word for not doing the same as some other application is hardly relevant. Have you tried word-processing with Adobe Acrobat?
As for your PS, Word tables are ideal for the kind of thing you describe. Your assertion that 'nobody' does so is plain ignorance - it is a common practice. In my previous employment,
many forms were created using Word tables. Before complaining Word is a 'really bad choice', you should learn how to use it.

Importing fixed width text from a .txt file

I am really struggling to do in Numbers '09 something which I can do easily in Excel.
I have a txt file containing plain text in fixed-width columns which I would like to import into numbers.
I just cannot find a way to do it.
I have tried using the Insert/choose menu item - but it won't take .txt files.
I have tried to copy/paste the data, but it get's pasted into a single column.
The data consists of many lines like this:

(Each column is an exact number of characters wide, but these forums make that hard to see due to the variable spaced fonts).
How can I import this data into numbers?
(Sorry, but I cannot get the data in any other format, such as CSV, the application which exports it only support fixed width colums with spaces for padding).

Here is a script treating the case of fixed widths values.

go to the Scripts Menu, choose Numbers, then choose "fixedwidth_values_toTSV"
Choose a text file.
The script scan the file's contents to extract the width of every column then it replace the separator groups by TAB characters.
The result is passed to the clipboard and is written in the original file.
So you may :
(1) paste in the document of your choice
(2) open the modified text file with Numbers which is fair enough to do that.
An alternate track is to save the script as an Application Package (Application under 10.6.x)
Drag and drop the icon of a text file on the application's one will do the job.

Fixed-width left-hand column in Muse

I'm trying to create a web page that has a fixed-width left-hand column (say 300 px) and an adjustable content area to the right that changes according to the size of the browser window. Is this possible in Muse?

In your "Site Properties" Layout panel you can set this up by adjusting the padding section.
Turn off the Centre Horizontal button, add pixels to the Left input sector. (see image)

What is the easiest way to read fixed width ascii files?

There does not seem to be an easy way to read fixed with ascii files in labview. CSV files and other delimited files are easy, but I cannot think of a simple way to read data from a fixed width ascii file.

Reading a file does not depend on its contents. Unless the file is gigantic, you can just read it as one big string and parse it later, especiall if you want the entire contents of the file.
If you only need a subset, you can calculate the offsets and sizes as multiples of your record size. That's the beauty of fixed size records.
It is typically not efficient to read a file in a loop, small portions at a time, so I would not recommend that except in some very specific situations.
Could you be a bit more specific on what exactly you need to do? Is your problem with reading or with parsing the fixed sized records? Could you attach a sample file and some description on what you need to read from it.

Can someone direct me to some good documentation to learn how to design a page to have a fixed nav bar, fixed sidebar and main content that scrolls?

How can I convert my web page from a fixed width layout to a fluid grid layout?

I'm taking a web design class (I'm using Dreamweaver CS6, btw) wherein the professor started us out building our websites in a fixed width layout but now I want to change my site into a fluid grid layout. My "site" so far is just one long page, and I've already designed it with fluid grid adjustments in mind (most things are centered in the layout) so it shouldn't need excessive tweaking.
Is there a way to duplicate the site folder that holds my first page, re-open a new document in fluid, then copy the code in and tweak the width parameters for the different layouts?
Did I just answer my own question? Help - I am new at this!!

No, not explored it yet, and may never....I don't know. I don't really make much money out of web design. It's becoming more and more difficult to find the desire to learn new techniques when the opportunities aren't really there to put them into practice on as regular basis as I would like. I've got a very good handle on css, php, html, jQuery - I'm not sure I want to add another layer at the moment, given I'm never quite sure how long I will continue to 'bang my head against the wall' . I'm getting to the stage where I keep asking myself do I really need the problems associated with learning new stuff to the point of being comfortable with it if the financial rewards at the end don't equate to the efforts of learning it.
I don't really enjoy web development if truth is known. I come from a Graphic Design background which I much prefer but somehow got side tracked and pushed in this direction and there's no way back now, lol. Whilst I concede Web Development is much more exciting its also 100 times more complex/difficult and the skills needed are considerably more.
Your example looks interesting and I should think I could pick it up reasonably easily given I work with php which uses variables on a similar basis.

FDM Fixed-Width Import Format & Multiple Accounts/Periods Issue

Hi FDM experts,
I have an issue that I wanted to reach out to you on regarding fixed-width import formats and how to cater for my current scenario for export to Hyperion Planning.
I am working with a flat file (.txt) I need to import to FDM with the current format;

These are all fixed in width so the field lengths will need to be defined in the import format. The requirement for loading to the system is only a speciifc Month YTD value for both Account1 and Account 2.
If my chosen Month is 2013 Jan, I will only require columns F and G to be loaded. These are the issues I have identified;
Can a fixed width import format cater for loading to multiple accounts in the same file? Or would I need a separate import format per account?
Can a fixed width import format cater for loading to a variable Actual Month period? Or do I need 12 import formats/locations per month?

Hi Aaron,
the solution you are looking for needs pivoting your source file.
Think that FDM, by default, only accepts files with one single column for amount. You have to pivot your file based on your logic and import the pivoted file.
For example:
Year     Channel     Product     ... Jan-YTD-Acc1     Jan-YTD-Acc2 ...
2013     CH1          PR1               1000                    2000
If your POV is Jan-2013, your data imported will look like:
Year     Channel     Produc     Account     Amount
2013     CH1          PR1          ACC1          1000
2013     CH1          PR1          ACC2          2000
All this process can be automated by playing with Import Scripts.

How to determine the fixed width I can use to generate html columns in java

I have a jsp where I dynamically generate menus for a web page.
Table's cells are generated with different width, making the menus look differently.
When clicking on menus, cells changing sizes.
What is the best way to implement that, so I have a fixed width for every column?

That's what I do.
The code determines the width of the column now.
The only drawback is that I manually assign values to the width depending on the menu item length.
Is there any way how to do it dynamically, by determining how many px width will be by having the menu item lenght?

Spry menubar not working correctly in IE9 - fixed width or padding or...?

Need help. My spry menu bar isn't all the way to the right when in compatibility mode in IE9. When not in compatibility mode it is even further from the right. Is there a way to make it so that it is all the way to the right on both compatibility and non-compatibility modes. Is there a better way than changing the padding or can I do a fixed width? www.superedgar.com

because of the interpretation of the different browsers, it is very difficult to get the correct outcome each time.
In your case, I would do exactly as you have done, that is apply an auto width to the menu item and then apply a padding to fill the rest. I then centre the menubar so that the difference is equally divided betweeen left and right.

Switching from delimited to fixed width and had to retype 115 column names

Hi we run 2012 enterprise. I just changed a delimited flat file over to fixed width and had to retype all 115 column names. Is there a way to preserve at least some of what ssis already knows (eg col names) in the flat file connection when
this kind of changeover is occuring?

Lets be honest. This kind of behavior and some of the others I've posted recently when it comes to switching in and amongst flat file formats (fixed,unicode,unnecessary data type conversion etc etc) in ssis cannot possibly be by "design".
You might think I'm arrogant but hear me out.  As a graduate from one of the better engineering schools in the US and having earned a BSCS from that school, my thinking is that even a first year college student would design this little part of
ssis in a more flexible fashion. And the sad part is that legacy mainframe technologies from way way back baked this kind of flexibility into their products without add ins.  SSIS is purportedly .net technology and as such should follow the
most fundamental rules of OO which include flexibility and reusability.
We should be more careful about the term "by design". I believe this is actually a limitation which I'm sure would have been dealt with had there been more time, money and experience invested. One of my other posts cites a recommendation (from
ssis) that displays along with one of these flat file errors and has something to do with dt_ntext. But the recommendation actually doesnt work. So are we going to say that a recommendation that doesnt work is also by design? I dont think
so. By design infers "for valid reasons".   And I dont believe there are any valid reasons for this/these behaviors.   If there are , pls share.

I'm working an example in APEX 4.2 so YMMV (your milage may vary!).
For Classic Reports, where the Column Attributes "Display As" is set to Display as Text (escape special characters ...:
1) I find that Column width and Element Width setting have no effect to make the column smaller or larger.
2) Here is one way that works:
- In the Region's Region Definition, under Attributes give the Static ID a name (no spaces), say, class-report.
- In the columns you want to affect, place "<div>#ENAME#</div>" in the columns Column Formatting "HTML Expression". Where "ENAME" here is the actual column name.
I'm using the EMP table as an example.
- Finally, in the page's HTML Header put, for example
