Fixed Nav Bar, Fixed Sidebar, Scroll Main Content

Can someone direct me to some good documentation to learn how to design a page to have a fixed nav bar, fixed sidebar and main content that scrolls?
My objective is to have the nav bar/sidebar visible at all times when the user is scrolling through the main content.
Thanks.

On line 135, you have this:
<td align="left"><h1>How It Started</h1><img src="images/dean.jpg" alt="Dean" width="138" height="141"
                    hspace="15" vspace="5" border="1" align="left" />
Try this:
<td align="left"> <div style="overflow:auto; height: 200px"><h1>How It Started</h1><img src="images/dean.jpg" alt="Dean" width="138" height="141"
                    hspace="15" vspace="5" border="1" />
Don't forget to close the division right before the cell closure.
</div>

  • Help docking fixed nav bar to top on scroll

Help docking fixed nav bar to top on scroll
    Hello,
I'm trying to get a nav bar that is positioned in the middle of a page to "dock" with the top of the browser when it is scrolled to, and undock when the browser is scrolled back up past it.
An example of this can be seen on http://lesscss.org.
Is there any way to do this in Muse?
Thanks for your help / suggestions.

I am familiar with the pinning feature.
I would like the user to be able to scroll down the page and once the nav bar that was once in the middle of the page is at the top, for it to dock or pin then. And when the user scrolls back to the top the nav bar will return to the middle of the page.
If you wouldn't mind taking a closer look at http://lesscss.org there is an example of exactly what I am talking about. The navigation bar is in the middle of the page and it doesn't pin until the user scrolls to the top.
    Thanks!

  • IWeb update does not fix nav bar problem

The subject says it. Downloaded 2.0.1 with hope, republished and uploaded pages, but nav bar still does not appear. Only black dot. Wish I could revert to previous version.

I don't know if this will solve your problem but I had the exact same experience. I have a site which I publish to a folder and then use transmit to ftp to a server. I also have the same site published to .mac. The black dot problem was only affecting the non.mac site. After iWeb 08 update I noticed a scripts folder and a feed.xml file in the site folder which I'm sure wasn't there before??? When I uploaded this folder and file as well as the index.html file it solved my problem. I'm no expert and I'm not sure why!!! but it might help...

  • How can I fix nav bar that wraps to next line, leaving big gap?

I have 2 lines of menu items in the navigation bar (Formal theme) when I'm in iWeb, but it wraps to 3 lines in various browsers, leaving a big gap at the end of the 1st and 2nd line where a short menu item could easily fit. Here's an example:
    http://www.redcottageinc.com/redcottageinc/holiday/holiday.html
The menu item "Links" could easily fit on the previous line. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried clicking of the navbar object and enlarging the window by dragging? You could also resize the page size to the Apple suggested 980 pixels which is what the iPhone uses. Then you could resize the navbar object to get the appearance you want.

  • Scrolling main content in an AP Div disappearing behind other AP Divs...?

Newbie here, using CS3. No CSS power user (yet!)--general concepts, yes, but not much practice. Meanwhile two recent CS3 classes, several books, and a concerted search through online forums have failed to point me toward a fix for this prob. Any help greatly appreciated.
Prob statement: In design view the core content of my pages disappears behind my footer and a secondary box, both AP Divs, so that I cannot see or edit anything beyond the bottom edge of the core-content AP Div. Overflow for that AP Div is set to scroll. The "obscured" content shows up only as an outlined shape extending past the footer etc. (and I can see some of the obscured text "through" the footer). Down arrow doesn't get me there: it just scoots down the outlined-but-obscured section. Doubleclicking highlights everything that's obscured so that I can see the relative shapes of the paragraphs, but doesn't expose the content. This seemed to start the first time I set the content div to scroll any overflow. I've changed it back/forth since; no joy.
Rendered in IE or Firefox, all the pages with all their varying content lengths look fine. Scrollbar works great. It's just that in order to edit or compose further, I have to copy everything into Notepad or something, work there, and then paste it back into DW. Definitely non-optimum, though: can't format or add hyperlinks to the content.
I'm using AP Divs, with scroll on in the "content" AP Div, because I couldn't figure out how to create a template where the footer would slide down the page in response to varying amounts of content. Started out with a table to handle all this, but an instructor recommended AP Divs so I went that way. I'd like to resolve this, rather than just go back to using tables while leaving this AP Div oddness a mystery.
The footer is full of a Spry tabbed panels giving my legal/green/design statements and other small bits of info. The secondary box is an AP Div called "quotations" and is for friendly little bits of cute/clever nonsense at the bottom of each page.
Tried a number of different settings so far and by now I've probably truly messed things up. Can anyone suggest a fix?
The code for the template file seems long, so my apologies. However, the content type isn't allowed for attachments so I've pasted it in below.
    Much appreciation!

I hadn't looked at the code at all. I was relying on the Dreamweaver GUI to correctly guide me to a desired outcome.
I think that this is not a desirable approach to Dreamweaver, which will write perfect HTML if you let it, but it's too easy to click buttons and apply wizards without regard for the markup consequences, thereby producing a veritable pig's ear of a page.  If you are going to use DW professionally, you will have to become comfortable with code.  That doesn't mean you will have to spend 100% of your time in Code view, but you will definitely need to watch the code as it is formulated.
I'm not starting from an engineering background.
Neither did I.  But I did start with a sincere desire to become proficient, and to learn the technology.
Murray, I get the idea of redoing my template without AP Divs, and will get into that. I don't know what "image swaps and links" mean, though. Would you mind teaching this newbie on this point?
Not at all.  When you select the "NavBar" feature, you are placing elements and code on your page that were designed in the dark ages of HTML (frames).  Some of the features in the NavBar will only work in a framed page (the down image and the over while down).  The code is antique, invalid, and just wrong to be included.  My suggestion was to forego this and just place your button images on the page (in whatever container you need to use), and apply links to them so that they link to the desired pages.  Then apply swap image behaviors to them to create your rollover effects, one for each button.  The result will be modern code, that has none of the legacy stuff of the navbar, and that will work fine for you.  As you become more familiar with CSS you can investigate even better ways to do such menus (if you want a preview of this, Google "CSS Sprites).  The latter method is usually the only way I do menus anymore.  And even then, I use both text and graphics for accessability and SEO purposes.
I will say that I like your attitude.  A determination to learn and improve is a winning approach.

  • CSS, Main content div and sidebar length

I'm using DW CS4 and am using the 2 column fixed left sidebar with header and footer.
I want to make sure the main content div is never shorter than the length of the sidebar. I've got a coloured background, but want the bottom of the sidebar and main content div to be the same, if that makes sense?
    Thanks

For equal height columns, create a 2-colored background image and repeat-y (vertically).  This technique is called Faux Columns.  See examples below.

  • Main content text does not scale down on iPhone

    Hello my Dreamweaver friends,
I'm working on a site for a friend -- a simple fixed width layout (header, footer, sidebar and main content). It looks good on Safari and Firefox. But on the iPhone and iTouch the text in the mainContent area does not scale down to size with the <h> tags and the links on the Spry navigation bar. Is there a reason for that? Is there something I could do so that it all scales down?
Another problem is that the right border I put on the Spry Navigation menu doesn't appear on my version of Internet Explorer.
The link to the page, for what its worth, is http://www.daveharrison.info/tzs/index.html

  • Main content moves down in IE

Ok, here’s a quick question. This layout works in all
    the browsers except IE 7 (I haven’t tried 6 or 5.5). In IE 7
it displays the main content below the sidebar floated to the
right. I tried ‘clear’ on both the sidebar and main
content. The conditional comments seem to work but, don’t
seem to quite fix the problem and I’m not sure if
that’s it or if they’re set up correctly.
I know I’m missing something probably easy. Any help
    would be appreciated.

  • Autorotation w/ Tab and Nav Bars

I am having a problem with views not being properly resized after autorotation. My app has a tab bar where one of the tabs is nav controller. I have the autoresize masks to maintain edge distances and use flexible width/height.
Starting in portrait, if I switch to the tab with the nav controller and then rotate the device to landscape, the content view does not resize properly. Once the rotation animation stops, the top of the content view ends up obscured by the nav bar (it looks like the content view is being sized to fit between the top screen edge and the top of the tab bar rather than fitting between the bottom of the nav bar and top of the tab bar). The horizontal dimension updates as expected.
If I start in landscape and then switch over to the tab with the nav controller, the content view does correctly sit between the nav and tab bars.
I dumped the frame/bounds of the content to see if something jumped out at me and am only more confused. In both cases, the frame and bounds of the content view are origin at (0, 0), width 480, height 239? I was expecting to see the origin offset in the first case where things don't resize correctly.
Not sure what I am doing wrong...

    Hello,
The answer is in the code. Can you post a link?
As a guess, the fix might be in setting the cell the
    navigation is in to
    vertical-align: top;
In design view, click in the cell that contains the
    navigation.
Select the <td> tag in the tag bar at the bottom of the
    design window.
The entire column containing the navigation should highlight.
In the properties window, select "Top" from the "vert"
    dropdown choices.
In code view, find the cell containing the navigation.
    Change the opening <td> to:
    <td valign="top">
It really depends on how you built it. This could also be
    caused by merged
    table rows.
    Take care,

  • Quiz slides backward movement, the Nav bar dissapears

    Hi,
When I enable the back button in quiz slides for CP 6 the nav bar disappears on the previous content slides. It randomly shows up once you click slides from the menu. Is there a way to have backward movement and see the nav bar on previous screens?
I have tried adding the nav bar back to the quiz slides thinking that the user would not be able to move forward until they click the correct answer but that isn't working either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi GillianKeisker,

  • Making sidebar fill colors "scroll" with main content div

Just when I think this newbie is getting the hang of Dreamweaver, something throws me a curve
I have a three column fixed layout designed in Dreamweaver CS4 at the URL below. Each of the two sidebars - left and right - has a fill color. I would like those sidebar fill colors to "scroll" or "flow" down as the content of the middle, main content div expands. As it is, the fill color of the two sidebars stops when their content stops, even if the middle content continues.
I'm guessing I'm overlooking something simple here. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    http://firinglinedesign.com/mathieu/

That is really ingenious! Many thanks for the lead. For anyone else who has this issue, while there are many links on Google, this is the first one I came across and it solved my problem.

  • I have 5 html pages that share a common header, footer, and sidebar. how do i use my nav bar to change the content of the body without duplicating a lot of code?

i have 5 html pages that share a common header, footer, and sidebar. how do i use my nav bar to change the content of the body without duplicating a lot of code? thank you!

i inherited the website. It’s for a non-profit and is not very
sophisticated, and neither am I in webdesign. It currently has multiple
pages that are identical except for that body section, so whenever i change
the navigation (in the sidebar) I have to update every html page.  I want
to have one basic page, and just call in the different body content based
on the link the user selects from the nav bar. How can i do that using a
    script? i am using Dreamweaver.

  • Access, fixing cursor while zooming, coloring scroll bar

While designing a pdf page for visually impaired
    1) How do you make the magnifier to stay on a fixed point of the text?
As  is when you magnify a page the cursor position changes with respect to the text. But for a visually imapired person it would be hard to navigate to particular place in text if his/her position is changed. Such a person can get easily lost.
    2) Is there a way of assigning a color to the scroll bar?
The scroll bars of the Reader are dark gray in a light grey background. After magnification this bar could get small and hard to detect for a visually impaierd person. Choice of color is also imortant for color blind person.

  • Content not lining up in the sidebar with the content located in the main area?

Hello, I’ve created a website using Dreamweaver CS4 and have come across an issue while using a template. The template I’m using is: 2 column fixed, right sidebar, header and footer. The problem seems to be in the sidebar where the content does not start at the top, it seems to be about 15px below the content in the main area. I can't find any CSS or any reason why it's starts where it does. It seems to look like even and as it should in Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari but not in IE9. The page is live at www.Lots2Homes.com and you'll see the content is lower in the right sidebar than in the main area to the left. The code for the home page and CSS is below. This has me going in circles, any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!
