Flash & Applets

I do not know if this question has been asked before, but can Applets reach the kind of graphics Flash does.
I mean Flash is somehow more attractive then applets, and there are so many nice things that can be done with Flash. However I can not stop from saying that Action Script 2.0 (in which you code flash) is very look a like of Java Script and Java code.
So can Java Applets come to look like Flash, and would there be a very big performance issue of so?

I mean Flash is somehow more attractive then applets,That's not true at all. It depends on what you want to do
and there are so many nice things that can be done

Action Script 2.0 (in which you code flash) is very
look a like of Java Script and Java code.
So can Java Applets come to look like Flash, and
would there be a very big performance issue of so?Flash is a tool for the artist. Flash is great because it provides rapid development tools for building presentations (i.e. graphics & animation). Applets are Java programs (which are not written by artists), which can do ANYTHING allowed by the Java API, and more. So I don't see that the two can be compared easily. But as far as graphics go, of course Java is going to be more capable, but Flash allows you to build things quickly without writing code.
For example, say you wanted to make a simple 2D game. You'd do it in Flash, quick & easy. But what if you wanted a full-featured game? In that case, you'd have no choice but to use Java.
Regarding performance, this has a bit to do with the implementation and use of API's and stuff. But yes, Java utilizes 2D and 3D hardware acceleration and is thus faster and more capable.

  • Firefox+Flash: Some flash applets' content doesn't get updated

    Hello community,
I stumbled upon a very strange problem with Firefox and Flash. Some flash applets (example: http://www.kenken.com/game) show only a plain white rectangle. For a long time I thought that it is a problem with Flashblock and/or NoScript. Today, however, I tried to get rid of the problem and made following observations:
    1. The problem persists in safe mode (with deactivated extensions).
    2. The problem persists after disabling hardware acceleration in the Firefox settings.
    3. The problem does NOT occur in Chromium&Pepper Flash. But I'd like to stick to Firefox for many reasons.
    4. The problem does NOT occur on my laptop running Manjaro (however, the setups are not really comparable).
    5. Initially I thought that the flash applets aren't initialized at all, however, now I observed that if I switch to a different tab and then back to the tab with the flash applet, it gets updated. I can also interact with the applet, however, the changes are only visible after I do the tab switching.
Any help or hint how to find the cause of the problem is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    PhotonX

A new finding: I tried to install an older version of Firefox and downloaded a binary from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org … /releases/. The older binary worked so I tried newer ones and finally arrived at the very same version as the one installed through the package management. The result is: The 33.0.2 binary downloaded from Mozilla works, the 33.0.2 installed through the package management doesn't! All extensions installed on my machine are available in the downloaded binary, so I assume that it knows about ~/.mozilla. What could be the cause of the problem then? Will try to start Firefox with a completely clean home folder (new user) and report back.

  • Flash "applet" for finance info web site

"If you don't mind a bit of Flash on your site, I'd suggest
using one of these stock applets:
    http://www.tufat.com/script52.htm
They draw from Yahoo finance, and are fairly easy to set up if you
have some basic HTML know-how. I chatted with the developer
recently and I guess he's planning dozens more such programs that
essentially repurpose financial data in the form of a Flash
    "applet".

Well, that is hard to tell. Like I said the website may have updated their technology. Just because it works with the Desktop, doesn't mean there is not a reason that the laptop might not have a problem. You have 2 different systems and
    most likely different configurations.
You may want to check Tools and in the add ons for both, look for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control..Flash10e.ocx should be installed and enabled.
Also for each check C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Right click the Flash folder and make sure for IE that the files are vs 10.0.45.2 by checking the properties.
If you have the correct Flash files and the correct SWO then, some other cause would be looked at.
It has been my experience to not "assume", but verify:-)

  • 10.4.7: broken safari menus over flash applets

It seems after the 10.4.7 safari update: 2.0.4 (419.3), javascript menu dropdowns that hover over flash do not work properly. This can be viewed at http://www.bestbuy.com. Try to use the menu(s) above the main flash applet and you'll see what I mean. I also use the Nightly WebKit and this issue is not present (build 15091).
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz/iBook G4 1.42Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 Gig, Rad 9800 Pro 256M

    Hello,
Thanks very much for the look,
You're quite welcome. Always glad to help out.
    I upgraded my G5 and
the iBook so I had no way of checking the site after
the fact. The latest webkit seems to have this fixed
so maybe in a futre release when the webkit merges
with safari, it will be fixed.
Which webkit is that? Are you talking about some of the developer software through Apple's Developer Connection?
Or, are you talking about some 3rd-party updates, or nightly builds of the Flash program?
I wasn't aware that Safari had a nightly build update like some of the other Open Source projects.
Perhaps I am just misunderstanding your statement.

Not in Java proper, since there is no platform-independent way to do it. You can use the java.awt.Window.toFront() method, but it's probably not what you were thinking.

Hello, I'm running Fedora Core 8 on my laptop with Adobe

like games or Pandora, I can't input text into these. I can copy
text and paste it into fields, but for games I can't control

I had the same problem. Simply download and install [http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Flash Player], and you'll be able to type in Flash input boxes again.

  • Flash applet (scrollview.swf) disappeared from front page

Hi, thanks for taking the time to read this. I have a serious
problem with a flash applet that is front and center (actually a
little to the right) on our home page. I am paid to update the
website for our church, and have been using flash 8 successfully
until now. We've never had any problems uploading and we've been
using this same flash file for a long time now (2 years?) and I've
    never experienced this problem.
    Anyway, if you go to
    www.livepraylove.com you
will see that on the right side of the page, the flash file is
completely not loading. It's as if it isn't even on the server.
However, when I log into my ftp server, I see it there. I even
downloaded it off the server, and ran everything offline and it
worked fine in all browsers on my pc. It just isn't working online.
Is there something wrong with the code in my index.html page?
Or could I have saved the flash file in a way that is causing this
problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since the longer
this goes on, the more trouble I'm going to be in.
    Thanks!

    Shutez,

    > see that on the right side of the page, the flash file

    Heh ... actually, since it isn't loading, I ... I don't see
    it. ;)
    > It's as if it isn't even on the server.
It may simply not be in the place on the server that your
    HTML says it
    is.
    Here's your HTML:
    // inside your <object> tag:
    <param name="movie" value="scrollview.swf" />
... since no path is provided, scrollview.swf must be in the
    same folder as
this very HTML document, yet ...
    http://www.livepraylove.com/index.htmlscrollview.swf
    ... doesn't lead to a SWF file.
So either the SWF is a) not on the server, b) on the server,
    but in a
different location, or c) possible your host hasn't set up
    the server to
    recognize the SWF file type.

  • Microphone not working in Firefox Flash Applets

I have Arch 3.6.6-1. I am trying to use my laptop microphone on a website with flash content. The sound on my system is configured using pulseaudio (Version 2.1).
Specifically  at www.duolingo.com, where I'm unable to access any settings or set any permissions with regards to access to microphone device.
I am able to use arecord to record a sample from the microphone and replay it. I am also able to use my microphone on gtalk through gmail where the settings state that it is recording from "Built in Analog Audio". The same show up on pavucontrol in the Recording section when active.
Whereas on duolingo, when the flash recording applet loads up, no recording stream is shown in pavucontrol.
I believe I'm missing some configuration here, which I have been unable to find after multiple google searches.
    Please advice.

Yeah as I mentioned sound is working in firefox. The microphone is also working as far as gmail chat is concerned.
But the microphone is not detected for flash websites.

  • Flash Player linux, grey box issue (youtube vids and some applets do not display)

I posted this question on my distro-specific forum as well as linuxquestions.org, however it appears to  be a unique problem, so here it is:
When viewing videos on youtube.com, most other websites, and when trying  to run certain flash games, the flash applet will not display (though  the audio will play). Instead of displaying the flash applet, there  will be a grey box where the flash video or applet would normally be.
This problem occurs on Firefox and Chromium, but not on Opera.
    My Specs are as follows:
    Distro: PCLinuxOS 2010 (32-bit)
    flash-player-plugin: 10.1-2pclos2010
    firefox: 3.6.6-1pclos2010
swfdec has never been installed (to my knowledge)
I did a lot of investigating about the problem but have turned up no  solutions thus far. Here are my results.
Flash videos and applets which allow  access to the settings menu (like youtube played from their website) do  not display, however flash videos and applets which do NOT allow access  to the settings menu (including youtube videos embedded in other  websites) WILL display.
Reinstalling flash-player-plugin and firefox through synaptic does  not solve the problem (though note that PCLOS works with rpm files, not  deb files. apt4rpm does not support the remove --purge operation,  however reinstalls are said to overwrite custom configs with stock  ones.)
Creating a new firefox profile and/or starting FFox in safe-mode  does not solve the problem
Creating another user and running FFox from that user will  properly display flash videos
Comparing default plugins between my main user and new user shows  that there is no difference. So this likely rules out a defective  extension or plugin binary.
Deleting ~/tmp/plugtmp* folders when FFox is closed does not solve  the problem.
Removing the ~/.macromedia and ~/.adobe folders does not solve the  problem. (have checked permissions between the new test user and main  user, and they are equivalent)
Downloading libflashplayer.so from the Adobe website and copying it  to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins has no effect on the problem.
I'm thinking that there might be somewhere else that flash stores  configurations for my user, and that maybe the settings there are  corrupted and would need to be purged. However frantic googling has  turned up nothing useful so far.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

The problem, at least in my case, was QtCurve's opacity. If I have opacity set to less than 100%, flash would not display for sites like Youtube and Vimeo, but worked elsewhere.
The solution for me was to go into qtcurve's settings, and put npviewer.bin in the application exceptions section for window and menu opacity. Doing that, I was able to keep my transparent menus, and also use flash everywhere.
You can find out what the application name is by launching your browser of choice in a terminal with qtcurve debug turned on, like so:
    QTCURVE_DEBUG=1 firefox
If you watch through the lines that start with "QtCurve" you'll see "Application name". Look for the one that shows up when you try to load a video. In my case it was npviewer.bin. In yours, it might be nspluginviewer or something else. If you add an exception for that specific application, you'll fix your problem without having to compromise on your theme.

  • Retina Display Support not working with Flash Player run applets

When running flash player run websites (e.g. games or Youtube) the flash player applet fails to render for the Retina Display in the new Firefox 18 (although websites render for the retina display).
Flash player renders everything including flash applets for the retina display in other browsers (Safari, Chrome)

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the [http://mozilla.com/plugincheck Mozilla Plugin Check site].
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions.
If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow ''Update'' button or a red ''Update now'' button, please update these immediately.
To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

  • How can I use PreloadSWF with files built with -compiler.debug into Flash Player 11.4?

I'm using Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 (x64) with a debug Flash Player (version 11.3.300.271 - I'm using the ActiveX plugin for IE). Using Flex SDK 4.5.1.21328A I compiled the ActionScript code
        package MySample {
            import flash.display.Sprite;
            public class MyHook extends Sprite {
                public function MyHook(): void {
                    super();
Into a `.swf` file by running the command
        mxmlc.exe -compiler.source-path=. -output=MyHook.swf -tools-locale=en -headless-server=true -static-link-runtime-shared-libraries -compiler.debug -- Sample\MyHook.as
I then preload this by creating an mm.cfg file and adding an PreloadSwf entry referencing MyHook.swf; running all this in Flash Player 11.3.300.271 works fine; I can point my IE to some web page containing flash applets and my own SWF file is preloaded just nicely.
However, the most recent Flash Player release on Windows (11.4.402.265) breaks this. After updating the player, any flash applet triggers error message boxes from Flash player saying "Verify Error #1014: Couldn't find spark.components.Application". Clicking the error away opens the same message box, but with a few different type names.
The workaround I found was to remove the -compiler.debug switch from the mxmlc command line; doing so make things work with Flash Player 11.4 but alas trace() doesn't work anymore.
Does anybody know how PreloadSWF can be used to preload debug SWF files into Flash Player 11.4?

Ah, thanks for making me aware of that forum - I didn't know about it. I now reposted the question at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1068071 - this thread can be closed as far as I'm concerned. Should I mark your answer as being the resolution to my question or the like?

  • The constant update of Java and Flash in a managed account

First off sorry if this question has been answered, I had tried a search and could not find it.  I have a lab of machines (Maverick with managed accounts) that uses Jar files and Flash applets that are downloaded to the desktop.  I would update the machines on a Friday for these internet plugins.  But then another update, either Flash or Java, will roll on the weekend and the browser is useless on Monday because Safari refuses to load the jar file or flash applet and Firefox will download corrupt jar files.  So the students cannot just use one browser.  I would prefer Firefox since it is more forgiving on the flash and allows me to have time till the end of the week to update but now there is an issue of the jar.  How can I make it that the java console and Flash will automatically update in the managed account or allow the person to update only these applications and it would not matter which browser is used?  Is there a way to use Automator for this, I have a feeling it is a no but I want to be sure?  Or is there a way on the firewall to prevent it from checking in the browser for the updates?  This is a little frustrating for there seems to be an update more then two or three times in a month and rendering the machine useless for lab.

(Released 4/16/2014) Flash Player 13.0.0.201 (Mac only) (44.67 MB)
That has the fixed Flash 13.0.0.201 plug-in and the debugger. in it. You just need to run the regular installer from that zip file.

  • Clicking in flash objects partly crashes Opera 10.60

    System: Arch Linux 64bit
    Opera version: 10.60 64bit
    Flash version: 10.1.53.64 (32bit)
    Hi,
I have a problem with flash since upgrading to the new Opera version. Flash stuff works fine, until I click on a flash applet for the first time (like hitting 'pause' in youtube or buttons in flash-animated menus etc.). After that all flash-stuff is completely unresponsive and also various other click-events do not get noticed by the browser (clicking into the address bar of an old or new tab, selecting a mail in Opera Mail). Other events (clicking on links, closing a Tab, opening the menu) work normally.
This happens with and without "export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1". With this line in /usr/lib/opera/operapluginwrapper it usually happens before clicking on a flash applet for the first time, without it only happens after the first click.
I checked the paths in about:plugins, Opera uses the correct libflashplayer.so, not the Firefox-nspluginwrapped one.
Opera 10.10 worked fine with this flash version GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS activated. I finally thought my Flash-related Opera woes where over ...
Did anyone else experience this problem after upgrading Opera?

I tried older versions of libflashplayer.so (9.xx) with the same result.
More details on the error: Selecting mails will display them, but there are not selected in the sense that hitting 'K' would mark it as read for example. Everything that looks remotely like an edit-field (the addressbar, password/usrname field in this forum and the like) does not recognize clicks. Ctrl+Enter doesn't work either.

  • Adobe Flash keeps crashing my MacBook Pro

    I've got the following setup:
1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo (Early 2006) MacBook Pro 15" (MacbookPro 1,1)
It's got 1GB RAM and an 80GB Hard Drive.
Fresh, clean install of OS X 10.6 (updated to 10.6.8 through Software Update).
Albeit having a malfunctioning keyboard (which I have disabled via Terminal) and a battery that needs to be replaced, I was having one very frustrating problem:
The d*mn thing kept shutting down unexpectedly. I don't mean a "PS I'm about to turn off, kay?" shut down but a full fledge cut the power, cut the cable, this girl is GONE kinda shut down. It was driving me NUTS! I dismantled, swapped out RAM, checked wires for melted insulation, re-installed OS X countless times...
    WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?!?!

No need to wait for an answer - I've already figured it out... I just wanted to make sure there was a definitive question, followed by an answer for anyone else who may be researching this type of issue in the future (as I have not found anything particularly helpful elsewhere)...
I started by running the CPU through a stress test, thinking that perhaps the laptop was overheating and forcing a shutdown. Terminal>"yes". Five minutes and no shut down.
Okay, maybe I will try the GPU...
Sadly, I couldn't get the AHT to load. Sooo... I turn to the internet. At first I'm spending hours looking for the Image file of the Hardware Test and trying to get it to boot from a USB drive to no avail. Finally, I Google something along the lines of "GPU stress test" and choose the first option - some sort of Adobe Flash applet that allows you to set parameters for an intensive GPU test. I click "Start" on the Adobe Flash content and BOOM - laptop shuts down.
Hmmm... I pop over to the "Chrome://plugins" menu.
    "Details"
    Adobe Flash
There are two instances of Adobe Flash. One of them being "pepperflash". DISABLE THAT SHIZ.
Pepperflash has been a hindrance since I was testing a CR-48 Chromebook. The vain of my existence. So many issues because of pepperflash. And now it's forcing my MacBook to shut down!!! Disabled that sucker, and sure as the world is flat: I don't get random shutdowns.
I might add, when I say "shut down" I may mean "restart"... I don't know if maybe I had "Restart automatically" selected at any point in time, which would have resulted in restarts during the course of my reinstallations.
