Flash Builder 4 - design view - states basedOn + design area widget

Hello,
Since i updated my project from Flex 3 to Flash Builder (4), i have very annoying issues in the design area.
The one in Flex 3 was quite usefull, but the new version is not easy, and straight forward usable.
Here are the 3 issues:
- when i have states designed from another one, i use the basedOn mxml attribute, which was used in Flex 3  and still exist in SDK 4 states system.
But the designer view in Flash Builder don't take those basedOn properties in account!
What can i do? and is it a known bug?
-  When i have at least one precific state, i must define a defautl state, in the new SDK. Ok, but in design view, i cant add a new component without making the change only for one state. I can only make the change for the default state, but it will not be taken in account for all the other states, like i can do in Flex 3.
What i want to be able to do this: making changes in design view without selecting ANY state.
Is it possible? How can i do?
- In flex 3, there were a design area widget to select the resolution used for the preview design.
It was very usefull when the application has very dynamic width and height.
In Flash Builder, this widget has been removed.
Why has it been removed? and how can i preview my mxml views wihtout changing width and height values?
Thanks.
Seb

The update has been improved in every other areas, so it is not that much important.
I just hope that the new release will fix that (as it has been answered to my post).
The only thing i don't like in new releases of FB is that when the architecture of SDK is aimed to seperate the work between design and code, they focused only on catalyst to create the tools to manipulate design, and they forgot to keep an easy way to do design app directly in FB (with the design view and the style properties of MXML in FB3). But i'm confident that they will give such a tool soon.
But for now, if you don't like the restriction of the new release, you can continue to work with Flex 3 for 0$! And even in Flex 4, you can create MX components for which the design view will work as before. The fact that tools can manage a mix between MX and Spark components is a great thing. It is up to you to choose which you need which its own advantages and drawbacks.
Xcode is real pain to use with outdated ergonomy. It is only usefull to code in Objective C which is another real pain to do.
XCode can be cheapper because all Apple products are quite expansive, so the software to create softwares for them can be much more cheapper.
And Apple get a good revenue share from AppStore, so again they can give a cheap soft to create apps. You also have to pay 100$ to be able to send app to appstore, in ly opinion the good price for XCode should be 0$, not even 80$!
Flash builder 4 is very stable, but if you don't like it, you can choose another tool. Main competitor has no designer at all!

This looks like a deal killer for me to move to SharePoint 2013 because the missing of design view in the new SharePoint Designer. Here is the way I do list development In SharePoint 2010:
    (1)
Create and deploy a custom ui web part in Visual Studio.
    (2)
Create additional “New”, “Edit” and “Display” list forms and set them as the default forms in SharePoint Designer.
    (3)
Edit the new created forms in design view.
    (4)
Locate and hide the original web part.
    (5)
Insert my custom web part proper location.
Only code view is available in SharePoint Designer 2013, I do not know how to hide the default web part and insert my web part (which is deploy to the farm) in code. There are suggestions to use other edit tool to edit web pages. I am not sure

How to access these form/page in SharePoint.
    (2)
How to insert SharePoint web part to the form/page.
I really appreciate if you can help me out.

    Hi,
Base on the description, you created web part in Visual Studio and created forms using design view in SharePoint Designer 2010. Now you want to access  the forms and insert the web part to SharePoint 2013 page.
By default in SharePoint Designer 2013, to add new forms, we can only custom forms in code view. For more information:
How to Create Custom Forms Using SharePoint Designer 2013:
    http://community.bamboosolutions.com/blogs/sharepoint-2013/archive/2012/09/20/how-to-create-custom-forms-using-sharepoint-designer-2013.aspx
To insert the web part, we can follow these steps:
Save this .webpart file to your computer.
Open the site in the browser, and go to the page on which you would like to place your web part.  With the page in edit mode, click the Page tab, and the Insert tab.  Click
    Web Part.
On the left side, under the web part categories, click the
Browse… button under Upload a web part.  Browse to that .webpart file you saved at step1.
    Click Upload.
Click to insert a web part again, and then you’ll see it in the Imported Web Parts category.  Click Add to add the web part to your page.

  • No Design Mode in Flash Builder 4.7

It took me many hours to figure this out so I thought I would share what I discovered to make it easier on others.
    1.  Flash Builder 4.7 no longer has Design Mode (being able to design forms graphically).  4.6 was the last version to support it.
    2.  Adobe will not sell you 4.6 (or 4.5).  They only sell 4.7.  They suggest you find a retailer who has an old box.
    3.  Don't bother complaining, the word is "real programmers don't use design mode".
    4.  I called support yesterday to get some questions answered.  I was told the wait time is over 2 hours and I can't leave a callback number.  (At least at that time, they only let you leave a callback number for product returns - which I also did.)
I spent over 8 hours on this yesterday at a cost, in terms of lost revenue, of 4 figures.  I hope this saves you some time.
    Blake

    Hi Blake,
In another page (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1056583), Adobe states that it will be possible to download 4.6 in alternative to 4.7, to still have the Design View. However, I have not seen such possibility yet.
I will not say that "real programmers don't use design mode". They do, if it works fine.
However, the Design View was not very useful for mobile projects, if you wanted to create an interface which, at run time, adapts to different screen estates.
It was very good to draw an initial mock-up, but only the simulator (and the device) can say how the app really looks like (if you want to know more, please have a look here: http://aliencoding.com/2013/02/22/adobe-flash-builder-4-7-has-no-design-view-is-it-blasphe my-no-but-the-software-contains-some-other-blasphemous-aspects/).
If you develop for desktop, then I agree the Design View lack is a real drag. I think Adobe should at least lower the price of the program, now that it's been scaled down for (I think) copyright issues (the Design mode relies on Flash professional components that was not donated to Apache).
I love this platform because it really saved my butt in cases of real fast devployment, BUT NOW it lacks support for Windows 8 that PhoneGap has...
Can we say... it is a legacy framework by now?

  • Flash Builder Design Mode Bug Workaround (!!!)

I've been fighting this annoyance since FB4 came out, and while I still don't think that custom/embedded fonts in design view are fixed by this, I've been able to reproduce this "fix" (workaround) to get design view to show fonts/theme correctly under some very specific circumstances on two separate PCs.
If anyone from Adobe sees this I'd like to know whether this sounds familiar or is possibly logged as a bug already somewhere in JIRA.. if not I could probably do that as long as it won't be a wasted effort.
    The problem:
You're using a Halo theme but certain CSS settings (specifically and possibly limited to FONTS) don't work properly in design view even though they work fine in Flash.  Essentially this makes design view practically useless since choice of font family, size, and weight can effect component sizing if you aren't hard-coding component sizes (ugh)... ruining your efforts to use design view for UI design if your UI has any level of complexity (or uses absolute positioning at all).
The specific circumstances seem to be:
You're using the Halo theme (you have no special 'skinning' requirements and want Halo defaults w/only CSS customizations)
You've upgraded a Flex 3 project to Flex 4 SDK (not sure if this is needed to reproduce the issue)
Using a regular non-embedded font (embedded fonts still do crap out, but even this 'workaround' doesn't fix that problem)
You're using swc library files such as the Swiz lib, Mate, Flexlib, etc. (I think it's ANY swc, not specific to any one)
This may also only apply when using an "mx only" project (no Spark), since we're using Halo here
The two part fix (as far as I can tell you need BOTH before design view works correctly):
In .actionScriptProperties, add the following bolded line after the compiler tag like so:
      </compiler>
      <theme themeIsDefault="false" themeIsSDK="true" themeLocation="${SDK_THEMES_DIR}/frameworks/themes/Halo"/>
      <applications>
(I think this may only apply to 'upgraded' projects, as the line does seem to be present in newly created FB4 Halo projects.  My guess is that an "upgraded" project should have such a line added, but doesn't get it due to an oversight/bug.)
The somewhat painful, and definitely odd part.  Remove all your SWC library files from /libs.  Grab the source code for the libraries and drop them into your project's /src folder as if you'd written them yourself.  (This may require some research and knowledge on special requirements to build the libs, such as with Swiz's compiler metadata compiler settings which you need to put into your project's settings.)  After you get things set up right and the project compiles again, doing a refresh of design view should finally give you proper looking Halo controls and fonts so they look identical to the Flash runtime view.
Why this works, I've no idea.  I suspect it has something to do with that stupid and annoying (and supposedly 'harmless') design mode warning message you get when you include a library like Swiz or Mate in your project.  (Design mode could not load xxxxxxxxxxxxx.swc. It may be incompatible with this SDK, or invalid. (DesignAssetLoader.CompleteTimeout)) - this warning doesn't break your application, people seem to think it's just a harmless warning..but is it breaking design view?
If anyone has any idea what's going on here, why this 'fixes' the problem (a better work around), or has any other insight I'd love to hear it.  The combo of needing to do two things (in my specific case) to fix the problem really made this a ROYAL PAIN, I still can't believe I found it.

Hi Fernando, sorry for the delayed response.  CSS Design Mode is not available for Flex 4 projects, but it is still available in Flex 3 projects.  The reason for this is that designing components in Flex 4 is often a lot different, since it relies highly on the new spark skinning architecture.  There is, however, an Appearance panel available in design view which supplies a set of the main inheriting styles. Setting these styles in the Appearance panel will result in assigning values to a global style selector.
    I hope this helps,
    Rob

  • "Design" section on Flash Builder.  Where is it?

Where is the "design" section of Flash Builder?
I have the latest version 4.7 from my Adobe Cloud.  One of the phone support giving me a call back couldn't connect to my computer to see my screen, and told me to download the 4.6 version instead... what??!!
I am stuck on "code" only mode in my Fb system and can't do anything.  How do I find my "design" mode for Flash Builder?
Also.....  The "Chat" support on Adobe doesn't seem to be working...  Anybody of you is able to connect to "chat" with adobe?

    Hi,
Ever since Flash Builder 4.7, they dropped Design View. That's why they told you to use Flash Builder 4.6 instead.
There are 3 Flash Builder alternatives:
The best Flash Builder alternative is FDT, but it does not support MXML Design View.
    http://fdt.powerflasher.com/
The 2nd choice is IntelliJ IDEA, you can download a MXML Design View plugin, it's very cool.
    http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/features/flex_ide.html
The 3rd choice is FlashDevelop, it's free and open sourced, but it's Windows only, and it does not support MXML Design View either.

  • Design mode in Flash Builder 4.5

I've seen from previous discussions that newer versions of Flash Builder wouldn't be supported in design mode because there would be too many SWCs to maintain, but I wanted to check if it'd be possible for the LCCS team to only support the current/active version of Flash Builder?
It wasn't too bad before because I had Flash Builder 4 on my old Macbook Pro. I recently bought a new Macbook Air, and I was trying to find Flash Builder 4 specifically for the purpose of being able to use design mode. I like being able to quickly mockup things in the design mode, and I've always been more visual personally (I still use the command line when I have to, but I'm a designer by nature and so I always prefer being able to visually layout my interface instead of code it out). I think it's a matter of preference, and I probably could switch to just using code, but I really liked the design mode.
Anyway, I don't think it'd be a problem, except I can't find any download links for Flash Builder 4. The only thing I can get is Flash Builder 4.5, and the design mode is not supported in that version. Would it be possible to find a download link (even for a trial) of Flash Builder <= 4.0?

    Hi all,
Exact same problem for me as well. Can someone please help ?
    Thank you !

  • Design View Removed?!

You've said Design View has been removed in your FAQ, but not said why. I use it to preview certain parts of my application instead of having to launch the app, then drill down to the point where that part of the app is visible.
It's a bit pointless saying Flash Builder 4.6 supports Design View since it is incompatible with the newer versions of Flex SDK. So if I created an application with Flex 4.8 and wanted to preview it in Design View, Flash Builder 4.6 would complain the SDK is not compatible and would not display the application.
Why did you remove Design View? Are there any plans to introduce it or something similar at a later date?

With all respect as former grouper at adobe i believe that you are taking aside here. Nothing wrong with that Don, but as iwas reading i got mixed messages... anyhow
The point i want to make clear, as i also believe some would agree and diagree is that adobe is simply gibing up with their one of the biggest inventions, JUST because a big *ss company such apple  thinks inother way.
I would NOT call adobe as leader, a leader would NEVER give up on its team, which is us... developers... users and so on.
What adobe is now doing.... well they fall pretty much into a dictator mark. Why think this way is that now every company looks up to apple, the biggest company out there and they do so... they dictate users and developers and seems like everyother companie now believes that this is the thing.
It used to be, company having discussions with users and developer what should the COMPANY do, what do you developers want to see and what do users want to see and experience, but thats not the case anymore.
So basically, Adobe is no leader, they would NOT have given up on flex nor fb. A leader would have at least done some changes that makes us as the developers to feel comfortable with the transition, but they didnt... or did they ?
Now that thing with the html5... thats not gonna be the big I in this world. For instance, take C and c# they are used WIIIIIIIIDELY.... consoles, PCs, surely some customized motherboards before compilation, well i dont know that sh*t but what i know, they have been around long time one of e oldest languages BUT STILL there are alternatives which people prefer.
That leads us to one thing only, yea html5 will probably be some ones new beloved comfortable relationship-like thingy but tghere will be others who still love the kinky stuff, such as3,mxml,haxe,c,c#,xcode,python and so on...
So DONT narrow down the opportunities..... you dont see that kind of transitions in stores where all these serials suddenly start to dissappear.
As leader one would strenghten the users behind him nowthrowing them onto a thins ice where there future will be unsecure, cause that happend to me.
Andone more thing with that dictatorism thing, its not only adobe, sony and ubisoft allready have shown such indicators and also applied some of them on their products where ive seen many and pretty threattening post and also EA seems to follow that pattern.
A leader would make you comfortable with your choises cause leader belived it himself in the product, but when leader gives up, then you truly see the "leadership".
Html5 is not for everyones taste, surly not for mine, ill stay with as3 and fb4.6 till they die, then im gonne become an unemployee and will live on the government cause ive payd my taxes for long time and cause of my leader fcks up, im gonna get those taxes back. Pathetic i know, like giving up, yes... thats what adobe does on us!

It is clear from this reaction that most people haven't been following Adobe's abandonment of Flex, over the past two years, and their total investment in other technologies and services.  It is business.
My point is ... you should not expect any significant investment from Adobe in Flash Builder.   So, complaining about design view, or any other features,  right now is not seeing the forest for the trees.
I WAS an Adobe User Group manager for years and a huge advocate of Flash Builder.  Now, I've concluded that that 4.6 is the last true version of Flash Builder.
Handwriting has been on the wall for two years now folks.   Time to wake up and smell the coffee.  Time to invest in other technologies like your leader, Adobe, is doing.
If you really like design views/drag n drop interface, I recommend you take a look at http://www.sencha.com for designing HTML5 rich apps.  Very nice design view interface.
I've chosen not to follow Adobe into their next big thing ... because most likely they will abandon it too like they did ColdFusion and Flex/Flash Builder.
With that said, Flash Builder 4.6 for Air desktop and mobile apps is a great thing to focus on for the next two years until HTML5 begins to come even remotely close to what Flex was capable of.
My two cents ... and clearly I have emotional issues that I need therapy for.

  • Design View not rendering content of pages

I am the webmaster and lead developer for a state university. We have developed a responsive Dreamweaver template for our mostly non-coding users (admin assistants usually are assigned web tasks for some reason). You can see our site here http://www.wwu.edu/webtech . When we bring up pages in Design View, they cannot be edited; none of the content is visible. Live view is pretty good, but it's difficult for non-coders to edit in this window. For instance, in Design view they can just select Enter after a block of text to start a new <p>; In Live View you can modify an existing paragraph as if you were in Design View, but you cannot add elements without using the Insert tool. My non code users have no idea what the Insert menu is talking about. So my questions are:
    1. First - has anyone else hit situations where Design View did not work? Here is what it looks like for the site mentioned above:
    2. Any idea why design view cannot handle this page? It's a standard responsive site with media queries... I've tried stripping out complexity but cannot get it to work. It is valid HTML and passes tests.
    3. Am I using the wrong product? Can Muse handle Dreamweaver templates?

Nancy O, osgood_, Fritz, thank you for your thoughts.
Dreamweaver has been a wonderful tool for non-coders for many years. We developed templates for the groups, then all they had to do was put the content into the correct areas through the power of the Dreamweaver template. That is no longer possible it seems with the more complex, responsive templates. And yes, Osgood_ , it does appear that some pages will be rendered fine in Dreamweaver. Our older templates such as represented by this site: http://www.wwu.edu/bservices IS viewable and editable in Dreamweaver Design view. Those users are quite happy. However our newest responsive Dreamweaver templated sites such as http://www.wwu.edu/webtech and http://www.wuw.edu/registrar2 are not.
What I'd really love is for an adobe engineer to sit down and look at our templates and let me know if there is anything I could do to make these templates usable in Design View.
Our other alternative is to move away from static HTML and Dreamweaver and go entirely to WordPress and Drupal. I will miss Dreamweaver when this happens! I had hoped there was a place for those who did not want the complication of a Wordpress site...

  • Custom ActionScript Component icon in Design View

    Hi,
I have created a custom ActionScript component in Flex. I have added the Icon metadata tag before the class definition:
        [IconFile("expandable-panel.png")]
        public class ExpandablePanel extends TitleWindow
However, though the path to the image is correct, the icon for the custom component does not show up in Design View.
    Any idea ?
    Thanks.
    Best regards,
    Karl Sigiscar.

Not very helpful. My question is more where should the icon be placed or what kind of extra configuration is required so that Flex Builder / Flash Builder can find it in Design view.
Yeah, yeah, I'm in the wrong forum. Doh.

  • Design view in Dreamweaver CC (update Oct. 2014)

Design view in Dreamweaver CC (update Oct. 2014)  shows renders fonts and elements as huge making it impossible to work in that view. In live view it goes down to normal. And is there a way to switch of the blue tag inspector wrapping around the elements in focus? It's driving me nuts!
What am I doing wrong, or is there a setting I'm unaware of?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the "fix" is going to be the complete removal of Design View and a much more robust implementation of a Live View editor. I don't have anything to back that up, it's just the vibe I get from the direction DW seems to be taking.
If there is a single web design/editor/developer application that even comes close to the features and power of Dreamweaver, I have yet to find it. And I test everyone I come across. Dw truly is the last great web design powerhouse. One of the main features that makes it so powerful, is its rich WYSIWYG editor for producing and managing large sites with tons of content - otherwise known as the inappropriately named Design View.
As design surfaces go, apps like Macaw, Webflow, and Reflow nailed it. They're brilliant when it comes to prototyping designs and building & styling structures. Dreamweaver just can't compete with those types of visual workflows. Live View is barely a design surface at all, and its workflows are preposterous. That may change over time. Live View might be useful someday for prototyping designs and building & styling structures, but I would be very surprised if Live View's design surface ever... ever... ever becomes a useful content production and management surface.
If Adobe allows - or forces - the Dw team to remove Design View, leaving us without a decent WYSIWYG editor, then where does that leave web designers like myself who produce and manage corporate sites with lots of content? - It's a rhetorical question.

  • Design view not displaying

    Hi there
I am very new to Dreamweaver working on an existing website.
I have one page that is giving me problems. The web page itself is displaying just fine.
In Dreamweaver, I am viewing with a split page, code on top and design on the bottom.
The design page is not showing up. The code is there, the web page is there, its just I can't see anything in the design section, except the top and side headers which are fixed in place.
If I switch to design only view, its the same.
Every other page is fine - I can see code and design - its just this one.
    It's Dreamweaver 8.
    Thanks
    Jamie

Ok I just found the advanced icons and now have ny double >> button. So I have pasted in text, highted it all and selected hopefully it is plain syntax highlighting.
If you go to the webpage - http://unicredit.com.au/loans/home.html
There is the heading “No Home Loan Set Up fees: til March31.”
Then there is a bunch of copy and the circular pics start.
All that copy in between the heading and the circular pics is not in my design view.
ie my design view shows the heading “No Home Loan Set Up fees: til March31” and then the circular pics.
The web page shows it all, the code view shows it all, it’s just the design view that doesn’t.

  • CS3 - Design View not showing externally linked images

In CS3 Design View, externally linked images are not showing
up... i am only getting the place holder.
    To prempt some questions:
1/ Links are correct and complete - apart from the fact that
they show up when previewing in the browser(s) - i have
    crosschecked
2/ There are no spaces in the url
3/ In the 'View' menu, 'Display External Files' is checked
I had this problem before and escargo suggested saving and
rebooting. It worked then but strangely, today, that file is again
showing some of the externally linked images but not all. And on a
new file, created today, none of the externally linked images are
    showing up... :(
I'm sure there's a simple solution to the problem... anyone
have any idea what it could be?
    Thanks and cheers,
    JJ

Nope. Some show - some don't.

  • Hyperlinks Don't Work in Preview/Publish Mode - Correct in Design View

I am having trouble with hyperlinks. I've deleted existing hyperlinks, then copied and pasted addresses back in but it is still not working. Any idea why this is happening.
    www.ronbrendle.com/reviews.html
To the right of each album the links for amazon, itunes and cdbaby do not work. They DO work for the Bunky Moon album but I cannot discern any difference.  In Muse design view, the hyperlink addresses are correct when I select the amazon, itunes or cdbaby element.
Also - when I copy a page URL from this site - it pastes the title tag. For example:
www.ronbrendle.com/reviews.html becomes "Brendle is a monster bassist." JazzTimes
    Please help if you can.
    Thank you,
    Deanna

I found this bit of information here ( http://www.cs.wright.edu/~jslater/mac-tex/mac-tex-intro/mactexintro.html):
    Adobe Reader (I wouldn’t)
    Adobe Acrobat (Not this either)
    Preview (Maybe better)
    Skim (Awesome, my pick)
TEXShop - Works well as a viewer-only with extra tools
iTEXMac - Also works well as a viewer-only with extra tools
    OzTEX (if not using PDFLaTEX)
    CMacTEX(if not using PDFLaTEX)
    MacDVIX (if not using PDFLaTEX)
If PDFTEX is used, any PDF(R) viewer can be used, but hyperlinks don’t work in viewers using Apple’s(R) PDF code (e.g. Preview, iTEXMac, TEXShop, Skim...), so you may want to have Adobe Reader(R) or Acrobat installed to test your hyperlinks.

  • Layout Problems in Design View

Our wedsites use server side includes that control the way
the page is laid out. My design view is not laid out the way it
should be. If I go to the preview, it is perfect, but from the
design view in Dreamweaver things are out of order. My navigation
menu is hanging over my text, and I can't seem to get it to
properly lay out on the page. Does anyone know how to fix this? I
can email a copy of the page view if anyone wants to see it.
    Thanks!

DW is perhaps confused by your doctype which seems to be
    suggesting both
XHTML Strict and XHTML Transitional -
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict"
    http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
I would say fix that, and the other validation errors from
    http://validator.w3.org first,
and then we'll look at the page again.....
