Flash & Coldfusion: retrieving variables from Coldfusion

I'm interested in receiving variables from Coldfusion without
reloading my swf.
(In a way that doesn't make me load out of some random text
file).
Does anyone know how to do this?

use the urlloader class to send data to and receive data from

  • Retrieving variables from Captivate 4 in Flash (AS2)

    I've found a couple threads in this forum on this topic, but none of the code suggested in these threads seems to work.  I have a quiz created in Captivate 4.  The 'Results' slide changes a user-defined variable, varCAPChp1Test to 1 on enter of the slide (I use the 'Assign' command from the dropdown in slide properties to assign this variable a value of 1).  I want to reference this variable in my .fla file using AS2.  I load the Captivate swf into an empty movieclip using the following code:
    var myMCL = new MovieClipLoader();
    myMCL.loadClip("supporting_SWFs/Quizzes/Chp1_Quiz.swf", "mc_EmptySWF"); //the swf loads and functions just fine
    checkCompletion = function():Void
        var test = mc_EmptySWF.varCAPChp1Test;
        if(test != null && test == 1)
            trace("Chapter 1 Test completed!");
        else
            trace("?");
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, checkCompletion);
    //Here is the output when I publish the .fla:
    Branching::script:varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varUserPts = varUserPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varUserPts = varUserPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    Branching::script:varCAPChp1Test = 1 //so the value is assigned properly in Captivate, but Flash doesn't "listen" for it.
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];

    I've changed the code below to just trace the value of a variable in Captivate when it's completely loaded in Flash and I keep getting 'undefined.'  I'm also using a system variable instead of a custom user variable this time.
    var myMCL = new MovieClipLoader();
    myMCL.loadClip("Chp1_Quiz.swf", "mc_contentHolder");
    myMCL.onLoadComplete = function(target_mc:MovieClip)
        var test = mc_contentHolder.rdinfoSlideCount;
        trace(test)
    //Here's the output I receive:
    undefined
    Branching::script:varChp1Test = inprogress
    varTotalPts = varTotalPts + 10
    rdcmndResume = 1;
    deepak branching : scripteval:[object Object];
    I know that myMCL.onLoadComplete is working b/c I am receiving the trace output, but Flash is not reading the variable from Captivate.  Can anyone help me see what I'm doing wrong?  I've been doing research on this for several days with no success.  This should be pretty simple and I keep getting 'undefined.'
    Thanks.

  • Flash loads XML variables from cache memory...

    Hi everyone. This is a very important issue. I have been in
    many many forums looking for this answer and no one fulfills my
    expectations. As I said on title... I have created a small
    application that edits my XML file in server. It really works,
    because I open manually my file and it's perfectly modified...
    however, everytime I refresh my page it loads the ancient XML
    variables because they come from cache...
    I also could find out that this problem is mainly happening
    with IExplorer, not with Mozilla Firefox.... however, I need it to
    run on IE too... but can not find a real solution.. I have been
    told to add random numbers to the XMl file extenskion, and other
    things like that, honestly... they do not work... please... does
    anybody have the light on this issue ??? I will appreciate your
    answers...
    Thanks in advance,

    Did you try appending a URL variable.
    xmlRequest.xml.load("theData.xml?cacheKiller=" + new
    Date().getTime();

  • Retrieve variable from WindowListener thread

    Hi,
    I have a jButton on a JComponent which sets the jFrame to 'setVisible(false)' which deactivates the jFrame. However I have noticed there is sometimes some lag between 'setVisible(false)' and the OS registering the window as deactive.
    Since the code that follows requires the jFrame to be deactivated I would like to detect that the jFrame has been successfully deactivated. Instead of simply adding a thread countdown I would rather keep things smooth and add a Window Listener to tell me when the jFrame has been deactivated.
    I have been able to successfully detect when the window was deactivated:
    public class DetectDeactivation implements Runnable {
        @Override
        public void run() {
            SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                @Override
                public void run() {
                    Frame f = WindowManager.getDefault().getMainWindow();
                    f.addWindowListener(new Listener());
        class Listener extends WindowAdapter {
            @Override
            public void windowDeactivated(WindowEvent e) {
                System.out.println("Window has been Deactivated");
    }My problem comes when I want to pass this information back to my 'jButtonActionPerformed' function that was called when I pressed my jButton button. The DetectDeactivation Runnable thread is run when the Java Application starts so I don’t know if I then need to create a second thread within my 'jButtonActionPerformed' function that will retrieve the information from the DetectDeactivation thread.
    Any idea if this is possible?
    Thanks

    Here is a simpler version of my problem
    I have a JFrame that implements WindowListener
    public final class TopComponent extends JFrame implements WindowListener{...} Inside this class I have a flag that lets me know when the window is deactivated
    private boolean hasBeenDeactivated =  false;I add a window listner to the Frame
    public TopComponent() {
        Frame f = WindowManager.getDefault().getMainWindow();
        f.addWindowListener(this);Override the activated and deactivated methods and use them to set my boolean flag
        @Override
        public void windowActivated(WindowEvent e) {
            hasBeenDeactivated = false;
        @Override
        public void windowDeactivated(WindowEvent e) {
            hasBeenDeactivated = true;
        }Inside my JButton event I set the visible window to false and attempt to wait for the window to deactivate before I make it visable again
    private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
            WindowManager.getDefault().getMainWindow().setVisible(false);
            Runnable runnable = new Runnable() {
                @Override
                public void run() {
                    while (!hasBeenDeactivated) {
                        System.out.println("waiting for deactivation...");
                        try {
                            Thread.sleep(10000);
                        } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
                            Exceptions.printStackTrace(ex);
                    WindowManager.getDefault().getMainWindow().setVisible(true);
                    return;
            runnable.run();
        } The problem is that hasBeenDeactivated never exits the loop.
    Any ideas how I can wait for the window to be deactivated before carrying on with my JButton action?
    Thanks

  • How to load variables from a .txt file

    Hi.
    I usually make a flash aplication in colaboration with a php
    programmer. But i want to test my swfs without having to wait for
    him. So i want to do that through a text file. I know that flash
    can load variables from text files. The problem is i don't know how
    to format the text file ( example.txt).
    Thank you

    Here's a couple of ideas.
    First you probably want to change what you have...and put
    your 'if (pVar==1' etc inside a separate function and call it from
    the onLoad handler after you have assigned the value to pVar...
    because the onLoad will run at some unknown point in time after
    loading has finished (actually in the test environment this might
    work... but that wouldn't be the same as what happens in a
    production setting).
    To create test files for loadvars... simply create a new as2
    file and put this code on the first frame and test movie:

  • LoadVars-using send to pass a variable from flash to php

    For the life of me, I've tried everything:
    I've researched LoadVars on Adobe forum, used David Powers'
    books, googled 'flash to php', LoadVars, etc. and tried
    sendAndLoad, send, and using $_POST, $_GET, $_REQUEST.
    $HTTP_POSTVARS but I keep getting this same error. any advice
    please?
    I have a Unix server running Apache/PHP 4 - LoadVars worked
    to load name-value pairs into an array -see thread)
    My goal with this simple app is to prototype being able to
    pass a variable from flash to a variable in php.
    Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in

    Actionscript 2.0 code:

    c.testing = "123FOUR";
    c.send ("
    http://127.0.0.1/flash_to_SQL.php","_self","POST");
    php code: (I also tried $_POST, $_GET, $_REQUEST.
    $HTTP_POSTVARS)
    <?php

    var formData:LoadVars = new LoadVars();

  • Is there any way at all of accessing captivate variables from flash?

    Hi,
    I would be grateful for any help on this one.  I have been working in flash and I wanted to know whether there is any way at all of calling/accessing captivate 4 variables from flash (I'm working in flash Cs4 Actionscript 3.0 and I'm trialling Captivate 4, but I just want to know whether there is any way/method of communicating between a flash file and a captivate 4 file, and if so, can this be done with an embedded captivate 4 file/swf).  Surely there must be a way of communicating between the two - they are both Adobe products!
    Thanks for any help, pointers, advice, tips in advance.

    Hi Louon,
    Don't know if this would help you.

  • Loading Variables from ASP into Flash

    I can find plenty of tutorials detailing how to load
    variables from a defined asp page into Flash, but here's my
    dilemma...
    I have an asp page that is reading a URL with a unique
    identifier in it (www.sampleURL.com?id=123456), and then turns the
    id number from the URL into a variable. On the same page then, sits
    my swf where I need to use LoadVars to pull in that ASP variable
    via Actionscript. If I don't have a static asp page to pull the
    variables in from and I want to pass the variable within the same
    asp page the swf is located on, how do I do it? Many thanks in
    advance...

    You don't need LoadVars for this at all. You can just pass
    the variable to
    your Flash movie by specifying a query string when you are
    calling the
    movie.
    If you are using the straight object, embed method then it
    would look
    something like this:
    <param name="movie" value="movie.swf?id=11111">
    <embed src="movie.swf?id=11111" ... >
    If you are using the ActiveContent JavaScript for your movie
    then you just
    leave off the .swf... so
    "name", "movie?id=11111"
    Then, in flash you can access the value of id from the _root,
    like
    var idInFlash:Number = _root.id;
    Of course in the above example you would replace 11111 with
    the proper
    syntax for printing a variable's value in ASP.

  • Passing a variable from Captivate 5 to Flash CS5/ActionScript 3

    I don't get it. Why is it so difficult to pass a variable from Captivate 5 to AS3/Flash CS5. I must be making it harder than it really is. I cannot figure it out.  Can anyone help?
    I have a variable (gpDone = 1) defined in Captivate 5 (it's a guided practice) on the last frame which will indicate that the learner has completed the guided practice file.
    Now I want to pass that variable back to Flash/AS3 so I can evaluate whether I should show the Continue button so they can continue. They have to complete the guided practice before they can continue. If it is equal to 1, the Continue button will display. If it is not equal to 1, the Continue button will not display, but a message will display telling them they have to complete the guided practice in order to continue in the course.
    Do I need to edit the Flash html? Or just put code in the Flash timeline or the associated AS file?
    Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Having the same problem...getting variable values FROM captivate to my inserted .swf (not widgets).
    I can set the value from the .swf to the captivate using Object(parent.parent.parent.parent).captivateVariable but not the other way around.
    Very frustrating.
    I hope someone answers your query.

  • Passing variables from PHP to Flash

    I have a contact form that works. The user enters their info,
    hits submit, and their info is emailed to me. I need to figure out
    how to have the PHP script send back a confirmation that the email
    was actually sent. I can't get the php to echo just a "yes" or
    "no". Here is what I have so far:
    Flash code to bring in PHP variable to notify user if mail
    has been sent or not:
    function receive_response(e:Event):void
    var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(e.target);
    var email_status = new URLVariables(loader.data).success;
    if(email_status == "yes")
    status_txt.text = "Success! Your message was sent.";
    timer = new Timer(500);
    timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, on_timer);
    timer.start();
    else
    status_txt.text = "Send failed! Please email or call us";
    and here is my entire PHP Code. The code in bold at the bottom

    Thanks

    I have a contact form that works. The user enters their info,
    hits submit, and their info is emailed to me. I need to figure out
    how to have the PHP script send back a confirmation that the email
    was actually sent. I can't get the php to echo just a "yes" or
    "no". Here is what I have so far:
    Flash code to bring in PHP variable to notify user if mail
    has been sent or not:
    function receive_response(e:Event):void
    var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(e.target);
    var email_status = new URLVariables(loader.data).success;
    if(email_status == "yes")
    status_txt.text = "Success! Your message was sent.";
    timer = new Timer(500);
    timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, on_timer);
    timer.start();
    else
    status_txt.text = "Send failed! Please email or call us";
    and here is my entire PHP Code. The code in bold at the bottom
    is where it is supposed to pass the "yes" or "no" as the variable
    success
    <<meta http-equiv="content-type"
    content="text/html;charset=utf-8">
    <?php
    // Create local PHP variables from the info the user gave in
    the Flash form
    $senderName = $_POST['userName'];
    $senderEmail = $_POST['userEmail'];
    $senderMessage = $_POST['userMsg'];
    // Strip slashes on the Local variables
    $senderName = stripslashes($senderName);
    $senderEmail = stripslashes($senderEmail);
    $senderMessage = stripslashes($senderMessage);
    $to = "info@*******.com";
    // change this to reflect your site
    $from = "contact@*********.com";
    $subject = "Contact from ***********.com";
    //Begin HTML Email Message
    $message = <<<EOF
    <html>
    <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
    <b>Name</b> = $senderName<br /><br />
    <b>Email</b> = <a
    href="mailto:$senderEmail">$senderEmail</a><br
    /><br />
    <b>Message</b> = $senderMessage<br />
    </body>
    </html>
    EOF;
    //end of message
    $headers = "From: $from\r\n";
    $headers .= "Content-type: text/html\r\n";
    $to = "$to";
    if (mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers))
    echo “success=yes”;
    else
    echo “success=no”;
    exit();
    ?>
    Thanks

  • Passing variables from php to flash and the opposite

    Hi guys, im trying weeks now to solve this problem but nothing yet
    If someone could just tell me how to pass variables from flash to php and the opposite i would be thankful!!! Please help!

    I have recently had to learn this, so this may not be the best way but it worked for me
    I suggest looking at the code below stripping out everything you don't need (e.g. the databse stuff) and just get a simple string going back and forward
    have a go and post any problems here and I'll try and help
    in flash i have
    private function getBalanceAndXP():void
              var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("utils.php");
              request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
              var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
              variables.func = "getBalance";
              variables.fbid = userID;
              request.data = variables;
              var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
              loader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES;
              loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onBalanceComplete);
              loader.load(request);
    private function onBalanceComplete(e:Event):void
              var loader:URLLoader = e.target as URLLoader;
              loader.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onBalanceComplete);
              var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables(loader.data);
              _balance = parseInt(variables.balance); // class variable
              _experience = parseInt(variables.experience); // class variable
    public function setBalanceAndXP(balance:int, experience:int):void
                _balance = balance;
              _experience = experience;
              var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("utils.php");
              request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
              var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
              variables.func = "setBalance";
              variables.fbid = userID;
              variables.balance = _balance;
              variables.experience = _experience;
              request.data = variables;
              var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
              loader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES;
              loader.load(request);
    and then I have my php file
    <?php
    $func = $_POST["func"];
    $fbid = $_POST["fbid"];
    $balance = $_POST["balance"];
    $experience = $_POST["experience"];
    $numVariables = 0;
    $link = mysql_connect("localhost","username","password");
    mysql_select_db("databaseName");
    if ($func == "getBalance")
              getBalance($fbid);
    else if ($func == "setBalance")
              setBalance($fbid, $balance, $experience);
    mysql_close($link);
    function getBalance($fbid)
              $query = "SELECT balance, experience FROM tableName WHERE fbid = '".$fbid."'";
              $result = mysql_query($query);
              $row = mysql_fetch_row($result);
              writeVariable("balance", $row[0]);
              writeVariable("experience", $row[1]);
    function setBalance($fbid, $balance, $experience)
              $query = "UPDATE tableName SET balance = ".$balance.", experience = ".$experience." WHERE fbid ='".$fbid."'";
              mysql_query($query);
    function writeVariable( $name, $value )
              global $numVariables;
              if ( $numVariables > 0 )
                        echo "&";
              echo $name . "=" . urlencode($value);
              $numVariables++;
    ?>

  • Load variables from XML into Flash

    I was wondering how to load variables from an XML document to
    a Flash file? I am familiar with the code to do it for a text file,
    but was wondering how to do it for XML.
    Many thanks in advance!
    JJ

    Thanks for the recommendation on the site. What I am trying
    to do is load varaibles from an XML file into text boxes in my
    flash movie.
    Here is my loading:
    var my_xml = new XML();
    my_xml.ignoreWhite = true;
    my_xml.onLoad = function(success){
    if (success) {
    gotoAndStop("slide01");
    my_xml.load("narration.xml");
    this is what I have on my frame with the text boxes (the text
    boxes are also have the variable name in the variable area)
    var narration = my_xml.picture01;
    var my_title = my_xml.my_title;
    var my_date = my_xml.my_date;
    should I do my_date.text = my_xml.my_date; instead?
    my xml doc looks like this
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
    <picture01>This is the text for picture
    01</picture01>
    <picture02>This is the text for picture
    02</picture02>
    <my_title>Las Vegas</my_title>
    <my_date>October</my_date>
    Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Text
    my_date.text = my_xml.my_date;
