Flash drawing (outline) insights

Does anyone have some insights on exporting vector drawings
on Flash?
I wanted to produce beautiful 256 color bitmaps like the
character flo in the Diner Dash series, but I haven't found any
luck. My bitmap is more jaggy and the outlines look terribly bold.
When zoomed-in, it looks even more jaggy. On the other hand, flo
and other DinerDash's assets look very good when zoomed-in.
There is somehow should be a trick to produce such quality
drawing. Or, perhaps Playfirst creates DinerDash assets using other
drawing softwares? I've heard about Fireworks but have never tried
it.
Thank you,
YHJ

Must be the way you export them. Try exporting to PNG and
then process that PNG
is some other application.

  • Behaviour of lines in flash drawing API

    Hello everyone
    I wanted to ask a question is it posible to move the line drawn with flash drawing API behind the objects that this line connects.
    For example if I have a two movieClips that i connect with line i can see that line atop of those MovieClips.
    thanks for help in advance

    How you get the line "on top" will depend on how the rest of the objects on the stage are organized. If everything is drawn directly to the stage and not enveloped in other objects then adding the line to the display list last will place it in a position on top of everything else by default.

  • Flash Drawing API error?

    Hi!
    I think Flash drawing API is not working like it should...
    Test this:
    var W:Number = 12;
    var H:Number = 12;
    function drawRectExt():void
                this.graphics.clear();
                this.graphics.lineStyle(1,0xFF0000);
                this.graphics.beginFill(0xFFFFFF, 1);
                this.graphics.drawRect(0,0,W,H);
                this.graphics.endFill();
    function drawRectInt():void
                this.graphics.lineStyle();
                this.graphics.beginFill(0xFF0000, 1);
                this.graphics.drawRect(W*0.2,H*0.2,W-W*0.4,H-H*0.4);
                this.graphics.endFill();
    drawRectExt();
    drawRectInt();
    This is the result (and the error?):
    Why Flash doesn't draw the inner box (red) in the middle of the outer box?

    Hi again kglad!
    first I want to thank you for your help with this..
    now, I have tested your code with "intSqSide = 7;"
    and it looks good at 100%, but if you zoom it you will see that it's not centered.
    In numbers, with intSqSide = 7, the code looks like this:
    function drawRectExt():void {
        this.graphics.clear();
        this.graphics.lineStyle(1,0xFF0000);
        this.graphics.beginFill(0xFFFFFF, 1);
        this.graphics.drawRect(0,0,12,12);
        this.graphics.endFill();
    function drawRectInt():void {
        delete this.graphics.lineStyle();
        this.graphics.beginFill(0xFF0000, 1);
        this.graphics.drawRect(3,3,7,7);
        this.graphics.endFill();
    My last version was:
    function drawRectExt2():void
                this.graphics.clear();
                this.graphics.lineStyle(1,0xFF0000);
                this.graphics.beginFill(0xFFFFFF, 1);
                this.graphics.drawRect(-0.5,-0.5,12,12);
                this.graphics.endFill();
    function drawRectInt2():void
                this.graphics.lineStyle();
                this.graphics.beginFill(0xFF0000, 1);
                this.graphics.drawRect(2,2,7,7);
                this.graphics.endFill();
    I think it's logic to offset in X and Y direction the width/2 of the line. Because Flash draws the line centered, there should be an option to change that, like in Illustrator, where you can draw the stroke centered, aligned to inside or aligned to outside.
    I don't know why Flash does not support this feature!
    It's really frustrating to draw lines in this way. If I draw a box with 12px side and 1px contour, I want that box with those values! not 11px inside, and not with an offset of half pixel in each side!.

  • Drawing outline Disappears? (CS5)

    Hi, I just upgraded from Flash CS3 to CS5 and when I draw something and try to convert it to a movie clip, duplicate it, etc. the entire drawing's outline just disappears. Am I doing something wrong? Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

    Possibly (CS5 has a new/different file format), but it shouldn't. Is it just that one instance (the chicken?)
    If you still have CS3, maybe pasting that one instance into a new document in CS3 would work. If not, if you can save it in a new CS5 document I could save it back to CS3 and then resave to CS5 and try reproducing. Not sure if that would work, as I'm not an expert in that area of the product (file format change).

  • Several Bugs in Flash, drawing tools unusable now

    So frustrating. It's clear Adobe won't do anything to fix their broken drawing tools in Flash, and every version is more broken and less useful than the previous one.
    Glitches:
    1. Pencil tool is jittery, inserts so many points and jagged parts that it makes it an unusable line. Pencil tool is on smooth setting at 100%.
    2. So I moved to using the pen tool even though it's slower to my workflow, but when drawing with it moves points away randomly making every point broken in the segment. So both pencil drawing tools do not work at all.
    3. When saving a file, after typing a letter it highlights the whole file name so if I keep typing it erases everything. Frustrating when saving several versions of a file.
    4. When using outline onion skin mode, it turns all layers into outlines as well instead of filled in colors, making it impossible to see which is the onion skin and which is the drawing.
    5. Flash randomly loses its display of all windows and I end up losing my work.
    Technical info:
    I am using the most up to date version of Flash Pro CC on a Windows 7 computer with an Intuos Pro tablet with driver Driver 6.3.11-4a.
    I will not be using Flash anymore and will be migrating to Toon Boom and recommending all animation studios I work at to do the same. It's clear Adobe does not care about Flash as an animation tool with each broken update.

    This has more to do with your tablet than Flash and #5. makes me think either your graphic card is going or you  don't have enough memory to display what you're drawing. I draw at least 12 hours a day in Flash at least six days a week and never have these problems but then I have 24gb of memory installed and a 6 gb video card. What I'm saying is these aren't bugs so much as issues with your hardware. Maybe roll back your driver? Or it's just possible that your computer simply can't handle the vector calculations or that your tablet is too old to handle Flash. In any event I can't really agree this is an Adobe thing. Here's something I drew in Flash late last year and you can see my line is clean.

  • Drawing/outline/stroke

    i'm wondering if there is
    a way to have an effect similar to a "stroke"
    which i can apply to a drawing which was
    originally made in photoshop with the paintbrush
    tool.
    In other words, I've imported my drawing into after effects...(.Lets say it's an outlined picture of a house.)....and now i want to create an animated path similaar to one which the stroke tool allows when outllining a mask, but because there is no mask to outline, how can i go about this?  Is there a quick solution?
    Any suggestins will be geatly appreciated; thanks....

    Is there a quick solution?
    Sorry, no quick one.
    I'd go back to Photoshop, think long and hard about how I wanted to animate this, put each line to be animated on its own layer and import the revised Photoshop document as a comp.  Then I'd animate masks on each layer to reveal the lines.

  • Unable To Use Flash Drawing Or Text Tools--Help!

    I'm a Flash CS4 user and two days ago started having a strange problem--when I use any of the drawing or text tools in
    Flash, my work disappears as soon as I let go of the mouse button! I've tried reinstalling Flash and that didn't work, and I can't think of any internal settings that could be causing this. And strangely, I'm running Fireworks CS4 on the same computer and am not having any problems with it. Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Flash drawing

    I am teaching Flash in class. When you create one object of
    different colors and place them over one another, the shape of one
    object is deleted from the shape of the base object. My Flash does
    not do this! I get a bounding box around my objects and if I try to
    select the object it is placed in the drawing object mode by
    itself. I have uninstalled the APP and re-installed but I keep
    having the same problems. The same APP with the same license (
    School site License) work well with this problem not in evidence.
    Is this a fault of the APP or the OS. How do I fix it. I will soon
    be upgrading to CS3 but I still need to teach my class!

    object drawing mode in flash 8 & above prevent your
    object erased by another object which overlapped it. You can
    enable/disable it from the Object Drawing button, or press (J) key
    when any drawing tool is active, before you draw.

  • Flash Drawing Script?

    hey well long story short, my dad wants me to make a flash
    presentation for his dentistry [for the patients] and will pay me
    'x' amount of money.
    i need to know one thing though, i'm pretty good in flash
    [motion tween, alpha, movie clips, graphics, library, etc.] but i
    just don't know this one vital thing.
    its to make the animation seem like its being drawn. i saw a
    tut on this a while ago, but i'm wondering if you have a link to it
    or if you can pm me and tell me and help me along.
    what i mean by 'being drawn' is like if i drew a line, i want
    an easy way [easy being not having to draw the line progress
    frame-by-frame] but like maybe having something to do with motion
    tween so i can just make the line draw out an entire tooth as the
    animation progresses.

    gave me a month to finish it and i've been procrastinating until
    now.]

  • How to have flash draw pad save a pdf from user side?

    I have found many drawing pad solutions. Some good, some not as good. All of them, however, fail to show how to save the file as a pdf  (would be happy with bmp right about now) from the drawing pad to a server side folder via php. Can someone show how to do that using as3?
    On the advanced side, I also need to figure out how to make it recognize logged in users of the preexisting CMS in order to save out to specific user folders. The CMS is Joomla 1.5 latest build, with JomSocial and JSPT multi profile. It would save out to folders created by the JMarketPro system.
    Thanks to whoever can help point me in the right direction. I am running out of time here.

    you can save as a jpeg using jpegencoder and you can save as pdf using blazepdf (but you'll need to load the swf with blazepdf because that's an as2 component).

  • Opening flash drawing in illustrator?

    I drew an illustration for a local business in Flash using mostly the line tool. When I try to open it in illustrator, it acts as if it is not vector anymore, and when I try to do a live trace it looks terrible. I thought flash was vector? What am I doing wrong and how do I get it into a vector form without having to retrace the whole thing in illustrator.
    thank you!

    You will need to downsave the file to an older version of Autocad or export it as a PDF or possibly an EPS.

  • Saving flash drawing as png image to database

    Hey guys and girls,
    i've seen a few good examples to save out a png of the current flash display area from a webbrowser from a flash, such as:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/saving_flash_graphics.html
    http://activeden.net/item/logo-maker-image-editor/99565
    http://www.flepstudio.org/forum/tutorials/507-swf-png-actionscript-3-0-bytearray-class.htm l
    what they normally do is stream the image data through a png encoder to a web server somewhere and then decode the image data back to current webbrowser and then trigger the web browser SAVE function, by prompting user to select a path and file name to save, like a download.
    What I’m trying to do is very similar, however, the difference is when you click that save button, you can save your png image directly to a certain location with a fixed file name, such as on your local computer:
    D:\flashimage\001.png
    or on a file server: 10.21.111.111\flash_image\001.png
    so i cant find the syntax here. can anyone give me some hints on this? thanks ahead!

    the user.
    Thanks for replying.

  • Flash (is it for me?), Wacom Cintiq 22HD, and Mac Mini

    I have Flash as part of the CS6 Master Suite, which I purchased primarily for InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere, but as yet I haven't opened Flash. I'm hoping someone here can save me time by advising me whether Flash is suitable for my purposes. I'm not a professional, just a keen amateur, but I do want to use quality software and equipment to do the finest job I can.
    Answers to a previous post in the Illustrator forum (Re: Animation – is Illustrator what I should be using?) suggested that I try Flash.
    Background
    I'll be using Premiere for converting my audio-visuals to HD format. Back in the 1980s I was right into three-screen slide shows. As part of the transforming, I'll be introducing a small number of video clips (hence my need for Premiere) and also short animation sequences, probably 10 seconds at most. The animation will be done by an artist friend who is keen to extend his talents into computer art. If I buy the computer (some sort of Mac), a Cintiq, load the appropriate software, and then loan it all to Steve and show him how to use it, he'll happily spend as much time as required for the animation. We're bartering: he gets to use a computer and tablet for as long as he wants, I get animation.
    A typical animation might involve Steve drawing outlines at appropriate intervals, over a background, then having the software generate the in-betweens. Watercolour-style shading (i.e. not fill-type, monotone colour) would be added, probably manually for each frame, unless the tweening can competently handle watercolour-style shading. For some of Steve's doodlings on his iPad (simplified versions of what we're aiming for), check out http://www.mediafire.com/download/sj731c17co55g5w/Steve's_iPad_Work.zip
    We're both new to this and recently spent an afternoon together looking at videos on Flash and the Cintiq. The combination looks like it will work for us, but I have a few questions which I'm hoping some of the experts on this forum can answer. A simple yes or no may save me hours of reading documentation only to find out that something won't work as I want. I'll also include some questions about the Cintiq and Mac Mini in case someone who uses them with Flash can provide answers. I live in a place where I have no access to these devices before I buy. I have to buy 'cold'. Thus my wariness.
    Please note: I'm not an artist and Steve isn't computer literate. So some of these questions might appear pretty dumb to an experienced user of Flash/Cintiq.
    Ques 1
    Is Synfig Studio (as suggested at the end of my Illustrator thread) something I should consider? Or is Flash a better bet?
    Ques 2
    Does Flash have vector tools that mimic a watercolour paintbrush like in Photoshop? Or is that not possible as a vector, and such effects have to be done outside Flash and then imported as background (or other method)?
    Ques 3
    When a Flash animation is finished, how is it exported, for example, to Premier? Do you export as h.264?
    Ques 4
    It is not clear to Steve and I after viewing three Cintiq videos, how the Cintiq interfaces to Flash. Does the Cintiq know about Flash, and appropriates certain drawing tools automatically? Or do you have to tell Flash (or the Cintiq) that this button on the Cintiq now operates this tool in Flash?
    Ques 5
    Do Flash and Cintiq work well together – and easily?
    Ques 6
    Do I need a monitor to be able to use Flash with the Cintiq? Or would a Mac Mini be a suitable computer – with the Cintiq acting as monitor? Steve won't ever be using this setup as a computer. He'll be treating the Cintiq as a canvas on which to draw and paint.
    Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi Guy,
    I thought I was the only one around who was old enough to have worked on wide screen multi-image slide shows!
    Flash may be the right product for you and Steve. I use Flash with an Intuos 4 tablet and it works fine. What you want to do is to search the Flash forums for references to Cintiq. There may be some problems that interfere with your intended use, or it may work exactly as you want. The important element for working with any Wacom product is to be sure that you are using the latest drivers for the Wacom product.
    If you choose to use a mac mini, get a new one, one that can use a lot of memory, you'll need it.
    You can export Flash files to video in most any file type and compression is installed on the computer. So, if you're going to use a Mac, install Quicktime Pro and you should have everything that you need.
    I have never heard of or used Synfig Studio, so I can't comment on that.
    Flash's paint tools are different from Photoshop and more similar to Illustrator's. You will have all of the flexibility of the Cintiq to control painting effects, it will take some practice, but you should be able to get the effect that you're describing.
    Hope this helps with your decision.

    Hello.
    I'm having the same problem. It appeared after I made use of many cells (a table of 10x200 cells) with formulas inside them.
    Before that, while I was making my tests and only used a few cells and the .XLF file was 4Mb, I had no problem. Now that the .XLF file is 8Mb I see this error appearing (in Spanish):
    "Error
    Desbordamiento de la función SWF. El archivo SWF generado no funcionará correctamente ya que las dependencias de datos superan los límites de SWF."
    Any idea of how this could be resolved (appart from using less data)?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Exporting to Flash, missing library item?

    I am using Flash 8 (also tried CS3, but flash 8 seems to
    import Captivate much better) and Captivate 3.
    I want to create a project following the steps outlined in
    this adobe article.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/cpvideo_03.html
    (this is the link to page 3 where the steps to exporting to flash
    are outlined)
    I am unable to because an item the author says should be in
    the Flash library is missing. From the article:
    quote:
    1. Import the Macromedia Captivate project file using the
    Import to Library option. Be sure to deselect the audio import
    option (remember, the audio portion is in the FLV file) and any
    other Macromedia Captivate feature that you did not use in your
    demo.
    2. Upon import, open up the Library panel and locate the
    Macromedia Captivate content. It will have the same name as the
    original Macromedia Captivate project file but with a CPT
    extension.
    3. Drag it to the Stage and name the instance captivate_mc.
    If you omit this step, the resync code will not work.
    But I am not seeing any "captivate content file".
    Anyone have any thought/suggestions?

    Well I guess captivate 3 must export slightly different than
    Captivate 2. I had to basically manually create the movie clip the
    article talks about. When you export from cap3 to flash it puts
    everything on the scene 1 timeline. So I copied ALL the frames
    & layers, created a new movie clip and put it all into that new
    movie clip symbol. Just kind of a pain to have to do it manually,
    but not a big deal.
