Flash Player group policy installation

Hi All,
Consider the following scenario:
BigCorp deploys thier Flash player the Group Policy Software Installation (GPSI).
BigCorp rolls out the latest version of Flash player to thier site.  Although BigCorp has followed all thier testing plans, and not noticed errors - users begin to report issues with a line of business app which uses Flash.
Admins at BigCorp disable the policy which installed the latest version of Flash payer, and re-enable the previous version.  Affected users reboot thier machines and they hang indefinatley at the GPSI instllation stage.
This behaviour appears to be by design, but the behaviour of the installer is not sane at this point.
I believe that this issue is caused by the feature noted at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402435.html - since removing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\FlashPlayer\SafeVersions prevents this from happening.  (Specific versions are listed, and appear to work as one might expect; i.e. remove the DWORD value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\FlashPlayer\SafeVersions\10 and earlier versions can be installed)
The reason for the indefinate wait during installation of a downlevel version appears to be that the installer is displaying a dialog box that has been suppressed by GPSI since it is, I imagine, waiting for a response from the user that it will never recieve. At this point the only way to allow the machine to complete a reboot is to either a)disonnect the network b) force the policy to fall out of scope.
Evidence for this can be obtained from the %windir%\system32\macromed\Flash\install.log; specifically the line:
MessageBox: 12582960,"The version of Adobe® Flash® Player ActiveX that you are trying to install is not the most current version. Please visit http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer to obtain the latest, most secure version."
Whilst I can understand (to some extent) the design of this feature - preventing the installation of an older client in this manner is disruptive to Adobe's clients.
It would be advantageous if we could override this using an MSI property. For example the Safe Versions features is in effect, unless the notional IGNORESAFEVERSIONS property is set to 'YES'. (Perhaps Adobe could consider this a feature request?)
This would afford protection for the maximum number of customers, but allow users with a business need to roll back to an older version of Flash player to shoulder the responisbility of running an older version.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html is NOT a sensible solution for customer who are relient on GPSI for Flash Player installation. Repeatedly running the downloadable uninstaller is not a sane thing to do, as far as I can tell.
I've only tested this with the Adobe supplied MSI (not the in-browser installer) as I have thousands of machines to deploy this to.
Does anyone else have issues with this, and how do you get around them?

Hi,
Apologies for digging up this thread but this issue has meant that I haven't deployed any updates to the Flash Player ActiveX since 10.0.45.2 for fear that it'll break my whole GP software deployment.
Firstly, I don't think Adobe will ever do 'the right thing' and introduce a new MSI property to make the install ignore any existing SafeVersions registry keys because I don't think they can; the actual ActiveX install is a custom action that calls an external executable embedded within the MSI that doesn't use Windows Installer technology so it wouldn't be aware of any MSI properties.
However, I've recently revisited this problem and I think I may have come up with a solution.
The trick I've employed is to ensure that the HKLM\Software\Macromedia\FlashPlayer\SafeVersions registry key gets removed during the MSI uninstall routine.  To do this you need to modify the MSI to add a new row into the Registry table.
You can do this by generating a transform using Orca, like so;
Registry = [any unique value you like]
Root = 2
Key = Software\Macromedia\FlashPlayer\SafeVersions
Name = *
Value = [Blank]
Component = ISRegistryComponent
The important bit is the asterix against the Name value.  This tells the MSI to always remove that registry key upon uninstall no matter what existing values are contained within the key.  Once that key is gone you can install any other version of Flash Player you like, even older versions.
This whole method of deployment relies on a couple of things to work though;
You must ensure that Flash Player auto updates are turned off for all your workstations that have Flash Player installed using Group Policy. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/167/16701594.html describes this method.  Note that for x64 machines you must place the MMS.CFG file under %systemroot%\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash and not %systemroot\SysWOW64 like the document says.  This ensures that your users don't manually update Flash Player out of your control and with an MSI that doesn't employ the fix as above.
Ensure that all future versions of Flash Player are pushed out using Group Policy and that you use the transform file above for each one.   If you do this you can roll back to a previous version without issue.
Assign the MSI to your computers rather than users
I've only ever 'replaced' Flash Player in Group Policy when rolling out a new version rather than upgrade it.  This means that the existing version is completely uninstalled before the new one.  That's not to say that upgrades won't work, it's just that I've never tried it.
EDIT: 'Upgrading' previous MSI's works fine.
One last thing to note though is if you've already assigned Flash Player using Group Policy you can directly modify the install_flash_player_10_active_x.msi that was used to include the above registry row (ie, not using a transform) and then re-deploy it.  This ensures that the SafeVersions key will be removed right from the start if it is ever uninstalled.  Of course, if any of your users have manually upgraded to a newer version since then this won't work - in that case you'll have to remove the SafeVersions key manually, perhaps using a VB script (ideally at machine shutdown).
I hope this information helps anyone who's had a headache with deploying Flash Player through Group Policies.
Cheers,
Zinc

  • Adobe Flash Player 10.2 installation flaw

    When I downloaded AFP 10.2 everything was fine, that is until the installation.
    After I "installed" it, "The ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered" popped up.
    I did everything I saw on other forums, but to no avail. I am currently in a sticky situation here.
    Also, my OS is Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit and I'm using Internet Explorer 9.

    Hi, thanks for checking. Well Microsoft says if you can see the Clock then you are using the Administrator Account. And it is this Account that has Permission to Install Flash Player, since the Installer writes to the Windows Registry. That's the purpose of the Clock test.
    Now, have you had any malware/virus issues?
    What Anti-Virus/Spyware programs are Installed?
    Sometimes they can block Flash Player from Installing the ActiveX Control.
    Thanks,

  • 11.5.2.602 Group Policy Installation issues

    Consider the following scenario:
    BigCorp wants to deploy a limited amount of software to their MS Windows desktop service, such that they can provide a rich browsing experience at login after a machine is joined to the domain.  To facilitate this, they deploy browser plug-ins such as Flash and Shockwave using group policy software installation (GPSI).
    This is a sensible decision, as there are vendor provided MSIs available to use and it ensures that the software is easily managed (upgrades, removal etc)
    When attempting to deploy Shockwave v11.5.2.602 an incorrect repair of the MSI is triggered on first use of the software for each user.
    On a standalone, otherwise clean, Windows XP SP3 machine with IE7:
    1. Install the software as a user with the correct rights (AdminUser), using the MSI direct from Adobe.
    2. Logout AdminUser and Login StandardUser
    3. Visit http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/  - At this point the MSI runs a repair and logs the following to the application event log:
    Event Type: Warning

    This condition will always be true, since there is no read permission on another users profile for a standard user account.  Granting this right is not desirable in a roaming profile environment. This repair will be triggered for each and every user of the machine.
    Though this repair appears to be non-destructive and doesn't appear to inhibit successful removal, it is undesirable behaviour.
    Furthermore, and as other have mentioned, loading a shockwave item in a browser (IE7 in our case) also results in the following entry in the system event log:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: DCOM
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 10000
    Date:  02/12/2009

    Happened while starting this command:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\SHOCKW~1\SWHELP~1.EXE" -Embedding
    We are keen to move to the latest version of Shockwave, for the obvious reasons, but these issues are going to make it difficult to get through our change management processes; as the package doesn't meet the requirements we have laid out for our user experiences.
    Can someone at Adobe comment on the reason for this undesirable behaviour and how it came about? Can we expect later versions of Shockwave to exhibit the same behaviour?

    Hi,
    I have posted an MST file which fixes this and other issues to the following thread here:

    Please post any feedback to that thread!
    Kind regards,

  • Flash Player 11.3 Installer Keeps Loading and Trying To Install Itself - Cannot Get It To Stop!!

    Because of all of the problems that I have been experiencing with the Flash Player 11.3, I uninstalled it and downgraded to 11.1, which seems to be a more stable version.  I used the uninstaller as recommended by Firefox and then grabbed the 11.1 version off of the Adobe website.
    All went well until I started getting the 11.3 installer loading itself about every 3 minutes.  You can almost time it to the minute.  It really sucks.
    I have gone in and tried turning off automatic updates in the global settings and the one that you can do online in the settings manager at: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.htm l
    Despite my best efforts, it keeps coming up and loading the 9mb install and then goes to the 11.3 screen where you accept the terms and conditions.
    This comes up...
    Then it goes to this:
    I would like this to stop.  Thus far, the only way to stop it is to upgrade to that version.  I have tried uninstalling everything and it still comes back.
    I tried deleting the temp files it creates on my hard drive.  I found 622 instances of the files it keeps loading.
    I am REALLY tired of this and would like to have it stop.
    Any suggestions??????????????

    Here is part of the log.  I deleted a bunch of the duplicate entries as they were basically the exact same with the only thing changing being the time stamps.  In answer to both Chris's question, here is the log.  In answer to Pat, the files that are running or that are attempting to run are the ones mentioned in this log, the installer (FP_AX_CAB_INSTALLER.exe) and InstallFlashPlayer.exe.  Those are the only two running that I can see.  I have been keeping a close eye on that, thinking that maybe something else is initiating it.  Nothing that I see anyhow.
    I am almost to the point of uninstalling Firefox and starting over.  I'd hate to do it because of the pain that goes with starting it over again and getting the extensions and add-ons again... However, the flip side to that is dealing with this whole thing.
    I have to say, the current version of Flash REALLY REALLY wants me to install it.
    If you need the whole log, I put it up at: Install Log
    Let me know your thoughts.  I am usually pretty good at solving things like this.  This one has me puzzled.
    Thanks
    OCTechGuy

  • Adobe Flash Player 10 - repeated installations

    I have Win 7 (Starter) on a new Acer Aspire One 532. My main (and only) login id is for me which also has admin. privileges.
    However I have to repeatedly install Flash Player 10 in order to view clips on YouTube, BBC and my own web site.
    Once installed - via the Adobe Download Manager - all clips play OK. If I close the lid and the netbook hibernates, and then when I open it up again, all is well.
    However if there is a Windows update, or if I do a restart / reboot, Flash Player gets 'uninstalled,' or maybe Win 7 just 'forgets' that it has been installed. Then I have to go through the whole download process to re-reinstall it until the next time.
    Actually this is only for IE8.
    I have tried downloading other versions for Opera, Safari, Chrome and Foxfire - and the installation(s) remain permanent.
    Flash Player is the only application that exhibits this behaviour. But I do use it a lot. All other apps. once installed seem to remain available for use without fail.
    So why is Flash Player with IE8 such a problem, and what can I do to 'fix' its installation once and for all?
    Thank you - Chris Brady.
    P.S. I have uninstalled McAfee because it was causing lots of problems. I now use MS Security Essentials.

    Thank you very much for your help and support.
    I only have one user id on the netbook - me with full Admin. privs.
    The OS is 32-bit Win 7 (Starter).
    So quite awhile ago I removed McAfee using the special removal app. Its all went. Then after removing McAfee I also ran the special rereg.cmd file from MS which re-registers the IE8 dlls that McAfee screwed up.
    I now use MS Security Essentials.
    Also I've again checked IE8 and Shockplayer is indeed Enabled and the version is correct.
    When installed FP 10 works fine. But when I have to reboot / restart it seems to get uninstalled from IE8. Then both my own web site, and YouTube and the BBC etc. all complain that its missing. (I can't install an earlier version, e.g. 9, 'cos then they also complain that its not the latest).
    But Flash Player 10 for Chrome, Foxfire, Opera, and Safari - all work OK. They have remained installed for quite a while, and they're always there and work as expected.
    I think that this is actually an IE8 issue, but MS on the Answers Forum(s) have not replied. And searching the web I can't find any other similar instances.
    Acer Customer Support suggested a full diskless re-install of Win 7 etc. at a cost of £75 (for the CD) - then flagged my post as 'solved.' Then they suggested installing IE9 - until I pointed out that this was likely still in beta (if at all). Again they flagged this as a solution.
    However I did do a Factory Reinstall - that is I restored the OS from a special partition on the hard-drive that took everything back to an out-of-box situation - at least I think I did. Acer have a System Recovery / Restore feature which seemed to take everything back to start. (I saved all my data files on a flash drive before hand!!).
    Then I reinstalled Flash Player 10 - yet again. But none of the above problem.
    Chris Brady
    P.S. I'm also having problems with Media Player 12 - it gives a 'Server Execution Failure' every time I try and play a file with it.

    I keep getting a pop up message when I turn AOL on with an installation window to install Flash Player 10.1 but the the box install is not highlighted and I have to X out of it to remove the window.  This window keeps repeating itself.   I tried installing it when the first pop up appeared.  The box was high lighted then and the installation started but did not install.   I have checked the list of installed programs and it is not listed.  I tried to download the program but it starts installing and a message  saying remove any previous version. • Cannot install Adobe flash player. the 'get+"installer keeps saying it cannot pass the integrity test.

    have win xp, latest versions of firefox and adobe' flash player. It works on the Explorer, but firefox calls for a missing plugin. When I try to download it, keep getting the "failed integrity test" message from the "get plus downloader". I tried all recommended remedies, including reinstalling firefox - nothing works.

    Every time Firefox opened

    Getplus is Adobe's download manager (Adobe DLM). Try downloading the installer and installing it yourself to see if you can get it.

  • Flash Player v9 MSI installation fails when running as "Local System"

    Hi,
    I'm going to distribute Adobe Flash Player 9 via SMS.
    I’m using Adobe’s own msi package:
    “install_flash_player_active_x.msi”. All browsers are
    IE6 (Internet Explorer v6). All systems are running Windows XP SP2
    + all updates.
    I’m well aware of ISScript 10.50’s issue with the
    DCom RUNAS keys.
    The MSI-package works fine as long as it is executed by a
    User with Admin rights (running in user environment).
    But as it is installed by SMS (running as “Local
    System”), it fails.
    I have tried to execute it as “Local System” with
    User Interface. I get the following error message:
    The wizard was interrupted before Adobe Flash Player 9 Active
    X could be completely installed.
    Your system has not been modified. To complete installation
    at another time, please run setup again.
    Click Finish to exit the wizard.

    I dropped the original Adobe MSI-package. Made a new, and
    working, using the FlashPlayer Merge Module.

  • Adobe Flash Player 11.4 installation via SCCM(Batch File)

    Hi Guys,
    I need to install Adobe Flash Player 11.4 on 150+ Computers via SCCM
    I am trying to run batch file in SCCM but doesn't work.
    It says Program has started in reporting but nothing happens and eventually failed saying -> run time exceeded
    SCCM program-> i m just calling ->
    commandline --> flashinstall.bat
    my code in batch file is,
    @echo off
    start \\sms01\source$\Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265\IE\flashplayer_11_ax_debug.exe /silent
    start \\sms01\source$\Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265\Other Browser\flashplayer_11_plugin_debug.exe /silent
    xcopy /y /q /s "\\sms01\source$\Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265\mms.cfg" "C:\windows\System32\macromed\flash\"
    EXIT
    Can you please help me out regarding how to run batch file in sccm

    OK , I just deployed flash player here and it ran like a charmy .
    1 - Download the last version of flash ( msi )
    - Go to this URL and Download the msi file : http://www.adobe.com/au/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
    2 - Create a "install.cmd" file  .
       - Create a folder , place the flash player msi file there ( install_flash_player_11_plugin.msi) . Inside this folder , create a file with the name "install.cmd" . Open this file and add the follow lines  :
    msiexec /qn /norestart /i "%~dp0install_flash_player_11_plugin.msi"
    exit /B %EXIT_CODE%
    Salve and close the file .
    I assume that you know how to create a package  / program .
    3 - Create a new package
       - After create the packge , create a new program for the package . In command line field , click in browse , make sure that you list "all files (*.*)" and click at install.cmd . Select the msi file (install_flash_player_11_plugin.msi) on "Windows Installer" option  . also , make sure that "Run with administrative rights" is selected on "Environment" .
    Thats  should be enough , let me know how it go .
    Cheers ,

  • HT5655 I followed all the instructions to update Flash Player, but the installation fails at around 90%, it says that there is an Application running (Safari) bit I actually close all Apps. already. can someone help me with this issue ?? Thanks

    I have followed the instructions to update Flash Player, the Installation Fails at about 90%, it says that there is an Application running (Safari) and it says to close all the apps. and start again ... but I already close all the Applications ... none is running ... can someone help me with this issue ??? Thanks ...

    Dear Dominic
    Brilliant reply. Simple English. Simple to follow instructions. And it worked immediately, first time.
    Why couldn't the Apple and Adobe corporations get their programming right first time? We spend billions of UK pounds and US dollars with them. They reply with incompetent programming such as this, and arrogance to their customers in issuing faulty systems without doing the most rudimentary checks.
    Anyway, I certainly shan't be buying another Apple as this is the most unreliable, most incomprehensible, most illogical and downright thoughtless shoddy piece of computer kit which I have ever owned. And all of it is rubbish ~ emails disappear, photos can't be organised properly, spreadsheets don't work, Pages is laborious… the list goes on and on...
    But thanks to you Dominic, I have been able to load Adoble Flashj… maybe eyou should get  a job at Apple, and set them all on the right course to how to work simply and correctly with customers.
    Thanks again,
    David

    Installer Flash Player.
    Relancer Safari.
    Safari> Préférences> Sécurité> Autoriser Plug-ins

  • Flash Player says it installs.. but no media content works/shows plug in required message

    Hello,
    I recently updated my Firefox to the newest version. In doing so, I was prompted to update my Flash Player. I went ahead and downloaded and installed the new version, as I have before. Except this time, after the installation was complete, every site I visited requiring the Flash Player to show multimedia content... shows the dreaded plug in required message. I have attempted to reinstall the player MULTIPLE times. I have deleted and reinstalled Firefox. Nothing has helped, and I am becoming increasingly frustrated. There is no indication the installation has failed aside from the fact that no multimedia content works.
    I am on a MAC version 10.4.11 if that is of any help to anyone. Would appreciate any help as this is getting really tiresome.
    Thanks.

    Probably you get that message because the flash plugin
    checker they implemented is checking for a specific version and not
    higher then x.
