Flex 4 - No Longer Supports ComboBox Prompt?
I can't seem to find any documentation on the Flex 4 ComboBox's prompt? in Flex 3 there was a simple prompt property available at the -1 index - however I can't seem to find anything similiar in the Flex 4 / Spark Combobox?

Unfortunately the prompt functionality did not make it into Flex 4 for the Spark ComboBox. Look for ComboBox and TextInput prompt support in a future release.

How do I turn of ligatures in the font rendering?
My flex project involves trying to match the font rendering of Apache's Batik rendering of SVG and ligatures have been turned off in that codebase. Is there any way (even roundabout) to turn ligatures off in flash?

DropShadowEnabled no longer supported in Flex Hero build 17689
Hi,
I am using the latest "nightly" Flex 4.5 SDK, build 17689. It seems the dropShadowEnabled property is no longer supported with the Hero default skin. I get this compilation error:
The style 'dropShadowVisible' is only supported by type 'spark.components.Panel' with the theme(s) 'spark'.
Is there any way to disable the shadow without making a custom panel skin? Now I have shadows on top of shadows as I use panels within other panels, and shadows where I do not need/want them.

When you say "no longer supported", were you seeing this work in earlier builds when using the Spark Panel and Halo theme?
I tried this code w/ Flex 4.0 and the Halo theme and saw the same error (which I believe is the correct behavior since I'm using the Halo theme but that style is only supported by the Spark theme):

Lion and "powerPC applications no longer supported" with hp Office jet printer
I have an HP office jet 5510 all in one printer that is no longer compatible with my recent installation of Lion. The "powerPC applications are no longer supported" prompt comes up when I try to open the app on my dashboard. Do I need to buy a new printer? To have it be compatible with Lion? If I do, which type of printer and software do I need to be sure of to make the two compatible with Lion?

Possibly. Check the HP website and make sure your drivers up to date. If you need a new printer, look for one that says it is compatible with Lion. -
Safari and the App store icons are both deactivated. I also cannot a software update check, as it gives the 'PowerPC applications are no longer supported error'

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

i got a message in gmail "this version of Safari is no longer supported. Pls upgrade to a supported browser." When I click on 'supported browser' it takes me to Apple's Safari site but there is no 'upgrade now' button. What am I missing?
Google seem to have decided in the last week or so that Safari 5.x, which is the newest Safari version available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is "not supported" any more, even though there are many reasons for staying with these OS X versions.
Try this (at your own risk, but it works for me), as it seems to remove the message by tricking Gmail into thinking your Safari version is newer:

The value is different depending on your OS X version but as an example, for Snow Leopard 6534.59.10 becomes 6634.59.10

By default JVMPI has been disabled in JDK 6. The new and official interface is
JVM TI.
The warnings about the removal of the experimental JVMPI have gone on for many years now, but there are still some older profiling tools that still use it.
You should contact the Company that created the tool, they will likely have a newer
tool that uses JVM TI, or offer you a workaround.

NetBeans profiler you might want to give that a try, I just used it for the first time last week, it was quite nice.

Probably you can remove the '_JAVA_OPTIONS' setting from your environment variables on the Windows OS. This setting is usually created by the install/setup file of the tool installed on your machine. In my case it was the QTP (Quick Test Professional) a testing tool from 'Mercury'.
I used to get this error message when I tried typing 'java -version' or 'java' on the command prompt.

After trying hard with the available information on the websites, I tried removing the '_JAVA_OPTIONS' and 'IBM_JAVA_OPTIONS' entry from the system environment variables. After removing this entry, I tried launching QTP Tool and it was able to launch without any issues and when I typed 'java' or 'java -version' I got the actual expected result.
Hope this would be of immense help for other guys !!

How do I activate an old Photoshop CS that's no longer supported
I have an old version of the Adobe CS (first generation) that's no longer supported by Adobe. I'm still using it on a desktop. But I just bought a new computer today and wanted to install this over to the new desktop. It prompts me to register that product but that link doesn't work anymore. I asked Adobe through the Chat line and was told they don't support this old serial number anymore. How do I activate an old Photoshop CS that's no longer supported? Anyone?
Thanks. I installed Photoshop CS2 and ran the program. It prompts to me Register. After I did, it tells me Registration is Complete. But when I close the program and reopen it again, it prompts me again! If I click Do Not Register, the box disappears but then reappears again when I reopen the software! It's quick annoying. But I guess if there's no way around it, I may have to live with it!

I am on the current version of Safari (8.0.3) but sites like Realtor.com tell me to get the most recent version of my browser. And that they no longer support my version.
Am I not on the most current version? Apple says I have the most current version!1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

I would not consider any list of applications known "not supported by Lion" to be valid. I did a quick check of the Roaring apps survey and found identical applications listed as both compatible and incompatible. Which is it? None of my applications are listed, including the one I haven't touched since 2006 and that works just fine in Lion.
Any application developer, including Intuit, is free to release an upgrade that will enable their software to work in Lion or even make use of Lion's new features. For an application to not function in Lion, it must be either:
1) Highly specialized, well-made, and very dependent on a specific version of the underlying operating system. Parallels is a good example.
2) Poorly written. I won't give any examples for this category, but you know who they are. Any application that doesn't employ low-level operating system interfaces and breaks in Lion means that its developers do not care about the product or its customers. They are using interfaces that have been declared obsolete by Apple years ago. They have made a caculated decision to not update the software until something actually breaks. Furthermore, they have made no effort to test their software against beta versions of Lion. Or maybe they did and the software is so poorly written that they couldn't port it from 10.6 to 10.7 in six months.
3) Completely abandonned. Quicken is the primary example. It was last updated in 2007 and those updates completely ignored the changes to the Intel processor in 2006.
You are unlikely to encounter anything from category 1 above. Those developers worked with Apple to get their software ready before Lion was ready. There are a large number of applications in category 2 and 3. Some are very expensive, prompting people to hang on to them for years. Any developer that sells software more expensive than the computer it runs on considers their software to be the priority. In those cases, the computer and operating system are merely vehicles for you to use their product. Updates to either are not allowed or supported. You know who I'm talking about here. You are free to fork over another $1200 for the latest version that will work on Lion. Just don't expect it to work on 10.8 - because it surely won't. -
I have been using Safari to access a gmail account for about a year. Today, I got a message that Safari is no longer supported by gmail and I need to upgrade. But I'm using the latest version of Safari. as far as I can tell. Anyone else getting this message? Is there a solution?
Also having issues with yahoo mail, as of today, when using Safari, but I'll post that on a separate forum question. I am mentioning it here because I wonder if the 2 are related. Gmail message appeared for first time today but I was getting this message from Yahoo earlier this year. I tried the work around found on this and Yahoo forum but could only get "basis" to work on Yahoo. .Today, even basic yahoo is not acting the same, reformating and showing commands in the text when I try to reply to an email. Annoying.Google seem to have decided in the last week or so that Safari 5.x, which is the newest Safari version available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is "not supported" any more, even though there are many reasons for staying with these OS X versions.
Try this (at your own risk, but it works for me), as it seems to remove the message by tricking Gmail into thinking your Safari version is newer:
-- Quit Safari
-- Locate the following file (location depends on your OS X version):
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.pl ist
OS X 10.5 Leopard and older:
/System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.plist
-- Drag the file to your Mac's desktop to make a copy. Also make a safe copy somewhere else eg your Documents folder, as if you lose or mess up the file Safari will not launch at all. Having a backup browser is also recommended.
-- Double-click it to open it in TextEdit
-- Locate the CFBundleVersion value (the last line in the file that has numbers in it) and increment the second digit of it to the required version of Safari e.g. Safari 6 now seems to be the minimum version that Google support so change the second number from 5 to 6 (don't change anything else, only the change the second number). The value is different depending on your OS X version but as an example, for Snow Leopard 6534.59.10 becomes 6634.59.10
-- Drag the file back from the desktop to its original location, choose the option to replace the old version, and enter your password when prompted.
-- Run a permissions repair in Disk Utility to set the permissions in the file back to what they should be (not required, but good practice).
-- Launch Safari and test Gmail. -

with Yosemite, Apple have upgraded CUPS to 2.0, and CUPS work different. So you need to change one think in configuration.
open terminal, and write the following commands:
sudo sh -c 'echo "Sandboxing Relaxed" >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf'
you asked for the password for superuser
sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
after this check in print queue if the printer is ready and not in pause mode.
The printer now should work, if the printer only print in B&W you need to change the configuration in CUPS web interface.
try http://localhost:631/ ; if you receive a error telling the web interface is disabled, type in terminal services the following
cupsctl WebInterface=yes
after this try again http://localhost:631/
after this choose in the web page "Adding Printers and Classes", bellow the CUPS for Administrators title.
in the new page, choose manage printers; after this choose your printer.
in the page of printer choose from the second combobox the option "set default options";
in the option page, change the color mode from monochrome to color, and save hitting the button "set default option", you be asked for a user and password with admin privileges.
After this your print is ok. -

GraphicElements are no longer supported in DataGroup. This allowed us to clean up a lot of the code (hurray!)
Moreover, there are some other cleanups. We now support null items. Item renderers are strongly typed as IVisualElements now (an item renderer must be an IVisualElement and a DisplayObject). We also don't dispatch events when changing the itemRenderer or itemRendererFunction anymore as there's no need to do it and no need to make these properties bindable.
Also a minor fix in FlexNativeMenu where the binding metadata was using the wrong event.

CS3 Can Not Be Reinstalled....Adobe says no longer supported...
Today I went to start Adobe Illustrator and I got a message that "Licensing has stopped working"...The message said I needed to reinstall programs.....I started to and got a message about "deactivating"....I phoned adobe and was told to ignore that message, uninstall programs and re-install them....I made several attempts to re-install them and kept getting messages that re-install failed....I made my 2nd phone call to Adobe only to be told my product was no longer supported.....So I have reading through the Adobe forums and I am only getting crankier.....Any tips would be appreciated....
PS...I am thinking this has something to do with Flex Licensing system but I have no clue have to edit the registry so i can re-install....
PPS....I have probably made it a worse mess by trying to manually un-install without really know all the bits and pieces to delete....BEFORE SPENDING HOURS OF YOUR LIFE REINSTALLING:

Had to go through all of the solutions until the first part of Solution 4 where it tells the user to move the cache.db file.
After moving this file I tried running photoshop CS3 and instead of the dreaded "licensing has stopped working for this product" message it asked me to enter the serial number again. After that I activated and it worked! ! !
I highly suggest testing these fast solutions before uninstalling and using the clean script.
