Flex web application or AIR application?

Hi Everyone,
I planning to rewrite an existing web application in flex. My primary concerns are security, performance and memory utilization. Which one is a better choice developing it as an flex web app or Air app?

The Flash player doesn't support this due to security. I
suggest you use an AIR application or redesign your web application
not to require file system access.

  • Best practice for auto update flex web applications

    Hi all
    is there a best practice for auto update flex web applications, much in the same way AIR applications have an auto update mechanism?
    can you please point me to the right direction?
    cheers
    Yariv

    Hey drkstr
    I'm talking about a more complex mechanism that can handle updates to modules being loaded into the application ect...
    I can always query the server for the verion and prevent loading from cach when a module needs to be updated
    but I was hoping for something easy like the AIR auto update feature

  • How to create and save a file in flex web application ?

    Hi,
          I want to create and save a file form flex web application. Is it possible ?
    I have done some googling and found that its only possible through file referece, which needs some serverside implementation be called.
    Is it not possible with file reference to create and save file directly ?
    Can any one suggest how to over come this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Alex,
    code written with the Flex Builder 3 libraries will certainly run in Flash Player 10. However, what you need is not so much the capabilities of FP10 but the library functionalities of the Flex 4 package. And I think that Flex 4 code will only run in FP10 and not 9 (but haven't tested this as at work we have not yet been permitted to upgrade, so there is not a lot of point going for Flex 4!).

  • How to use custom HTML page in flex web application with out using iframe

    Hi all,
              I have to import a custom HTML page (that has got links to another html pages) inside my flex web application and i dont want to use IFrame. Can you please suggest me with best example.
    Please help me out as i'm new to flex.

    Hi, there:
    Best thing to do is to start with the default login.html page, and then modify it. The login screen is fairly complex and it's easy to just miss a JS function you need to call. To get to default page, you would need to do one deploy (to simulator or whatever), and then look for login.html page in the temporary Xcode or Android project generated from the deployment. It should be under the "deploy" directory in your JDev workspace.
    You can also see all the framework JS files and CSS files that way as well.
    We have had customers implementing custom login screen so we know it can work, but they all had to start with the default login screen and then modify it.
    Thanks,
    Joe Huang

  • I am developing a flex web application which needs to access Other domain ,is there any other way other than cross domain policy available ? please help

    All the paths to CFCs are the same in my live production site.  Can you be more specific as to what you mean by "RemoteClass aliases in your AS Classes and CFCs (if any) are correct."?  How will the app know that the CFC is on http://myLiveSite.com instead of http://myDevSite.com?  The only line of code that I have noticed that points to a URL is the endpoint in a file called _Super_XXX.as.  And at the top of that file it says that the file is not meant for editting.
    To clarify...I see your app/code all exists on a server access via a web browser so I can understand that everything still works when deployed.  Mine is a mobile app so when I am developing and testing on my local computer the URL points to my local development machine.  However when I deploy it to a mobile device like a tablet and run the app, it needs to be able to access a cfc on a remote server via a different URL ie. my http://myLiveSite.com/myCFC.cfc instead of http://localhost/myCFC.cfc
    Thanks for your help!  I will now take a look at your thread.

  • How to include xml file without embedding in flex web application?

    Hi
    I have a big XML file around 11 mb. I want to include this xml in my web application without embedding.
    So anyone have idea to include.
    Please suggest me any idea.
    Thanks

    If you don't want to embed the XML file into a SWF, then the SWF can download the XML file from the server at runtime when it needs it. But there will be a delay while that happens. Maybe it would be better to put the data in the XML file into a database and then access only the parts of it that you need.

  • Mm.cfg file for logging in flex web apps

    Hi there,
    I am developing a flex web application for which logging needs to be done.
    What is found in my research so far is in web application logging can be enabled only when mm.cfg file is created manually.
    I dont want client's to create this file.
    I have two questions.
    1. Is there any way or any logging library which can log without manualy creating this mm.cfg file?
    2. Is there any control offered for creating custom log files (with particular naming convention, file size specification) for particular application.
    Thanks,
    Abhishek.

  • Using project libraries for both web-based and AIR applications

    I need to develop substantial code to build both web-based and AIR applications.  Yes, they will have different features, especially when it comes to accessing files on the local file system.
    However, 98% of the code can be shared.
    I want to use a project library that can be used for both types of applications. Maybe using conditional compile when required to not use AIR API's in a web-based application.
    I found this (somewhat old) warning:
    Include Adobe AIR libraries Select this option if your library must use AIR features, such as access to the AIR APIs. Flex Builder then changes the library path of this new Flex Library project so that it includes airglobal.swc and airframework.swc. Web-based Flex projects cannot use this library.
    Do not select this option if you are writing a generic library intended to be used only in a web-based Flex application, or in either a web-based or AIR-based application.
    Does this apply to Flash Builder 4.5?

    I have found a workaround, but it's quite clumsy, involving a transfer vector (in old-fashioned terms) in the main application for each function in the AIR library.
    I have created a library for AIR classes only (fourdtext.fileOperations is there).
    The AIR application provides "Function" values that any other code in the general-purpose libraries can use.
    It works, but it's nasty.
    In Main.mxml:
    import com.fourdtext.fileOperations.AxFiles;
    // this gets a list of native path strings, from and array of "File" objects
    public var AxGetListFunction:Function = AxGetListRedirect;
    private function AxGetListRedirect(list:Array):Vector.<String>{
        return AxFiles.AxGetList(list);
    In general-purpose code:
    var list:Array = event.dragSource.dataForFormat("air:file list") as Array;
    var AxGetList:Function = FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.AxGetListFunction;
    listFiles = AxGetList(list);

  • Flex BlazeDS application to AIR?

    Hi,
    I have a Flex BlazeDS web application that work in Tomcat.
    The application use BlazeDS message "Push" feature. Do you think if
    it is possible for me to convert it to an air application.
    The flex application need cobnfig in Tomcat. I am not sure if
    it works when it convert to AIR without Tomcat.
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi,
    You can have an AIR application that uses the BlazeDS
    messaging features. The information in the config file you are
    talking about (services-config.xml) gets compiled into the
    application.
    You'd need to set the endpoint to a complete absolute URL
    though. (not relative like in Flex because both BlazeDS and Flex
    app might be on the same server / domain).

  • How to integrate a flex build in a web application running on jBoss 5.1

    Hi,
    I have two flex builds for a messaging application that I have to integrate with my web application running on Jboss 5.1 . I have tried hot deploying the builds into the default deploy folder of Jboss,but that approach doesn't seem to work(maybe because I may need to make war out of the flex builds). Can someone tell me an approach of how to accomplish this. Can I leverage BLAZEDS for this purpose.

    I think the problem you are experiencing is this one:
    http://subclipse.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=511
    You probably have Subclipse 1.2.4 installed, which is the
    latest official release. But the new release based on Subversion
    1.5 has been in development for over a year. It will be version
    1.4.0 and probably released next week when Subversion 1.5 is
    released.
