Flicker-shimmer solved

I think I've solved the vexing flicker-shimmer problem that I occasionally noted when creating a picture slide show with FCP. The cross dissolve transitions would sometimes expose a "jittery" picture thought to be a problem with interlacing, etc. What I've done is the following: Arrange all pictures in their final length and sequence without transitions. Select the entire grouping. Then go to Effects, Video Filters, Image Stabilization. Render the grouping. Then add the transitions and render again. You will notice the rendering takes longer, but the end result is a much more stable and ficker free slide show. I seemed to work for me.

So I spent the day working on this, believe it or not, making a bit of a science project out of it. I was able to resolve the same problem by just stripping the slides down, removing my filters and transitions. Then I tried the gentleman's solution here, using the stabilizer, which resolved the bad transition issues but still left me with some shaky slides. I stripped them down again, still with the stabilizer on all, and this time added de-interlace filters for the ones from faster moving footage, rendered, added the transitions, rendered again. This looked quite good on the tv. Finally, I tried another round, this time stripping it all back, removing even the Stabilizer filter, and added just the De-Interlace filter where needed, (plus the basic border filter stripped back to just one frame line to clean the edges). Render. Then add the transitions. Rerender. This looked just fine as well, and spared me the sluggish render time when putting transitions over "stabilized" slides.
So it appears that the solution to the shaky transitions was more about the order in which the filters are applied, rather than the Stabilizer filter per se. So long as the filter is applied and rendered before the transitions are applied and rerendered, it turns out ok--the stabilizer isn't the key, but the order. Thanks for your solution, it put me on the path to mine!

  • IMac G5 PPC screen flicker/shimmer

This is a new machine, it was delivered yesterday. It's way overkill for my desk but the price was right. I set the resolution to 1344 x 840 and reduced the brightness 20% and shortly after noticed the screen occasionally shimmer. It seemed to happen when I selected an icon on the desktop but I could not actually control it. Has anyone an answer as to why this is happening? Has anyone had a similar experience and how did you deal with it?
    Many thanks

    hey,
i have had the same problem with a flickering screen my resolution is set at1680x1050. i ran a AHT and it showed all was fine but in the end it needed to have the logic board replaced. a few weeks later the hard drive needed to be replaced as well. i bought this imac in may '05 so it's not even a year old yet. i don't know if the flickering screen corrupted the hard drive. the tech didn't have an answer. if you have apple care have them check it out.

  • Has anyone got the screen flick problem solved?

    as above thanks.
(i am starting to get irritated of the flicking screen)

finally got my computer back with more problems than I sent it in with I think. They put in a new logic board, battery, and super drive. I no longer can see my serial number in the about this mac window. also, the battery is loose and sometimes the meter reads 0% and sometimes it will not turn on. I dont know what the deal is. The people that fixed it are in the middle of selling the store so I dont feel like deeling with them for a while until they get all moved. I might just call applecare in the morning or something. I hate this, I am having the worst luck with all my electronics lately.

  • Solved the Minecraft flicker issue

    SOLVED!
Was having an issue with the intel HD4600 graphics driver flickering every time my son played minecraft.  Got a hold of a wonderful HP support guy in India and he and I worked it out.
    1. Uninstall the Intel 4600 Driver fom device manager
    2. Uninstall java
    3. Increase the virtual memory on your computer as much as you can
    4. reboot
    5. from device manager on the graphics card do the "check for updates" or "update driver". Follow the process until it updates to the intel 4600 from the microsoft standard display adapter (what is interesting is that when it did this on my new pc, it acutally rolled back the driver to a previous version, NOT the version that shipped when I received the PC)
    6. Reboot
    7. reinstall java
    8. reboot
    9. Click minecraft and play.
Hope you avoid the time wasted that I had before I finally got through to a real technician in India.
Also you should know that the text "chat" support from HP is horrible.  The person there told me that minecraft was just incompatible with my pc. Which obviously it isnt, as my son is now playing it flicker-free.

  • Lenovo G530 laptop screen flicker

I have a Lenovo G530 laptop that has an issue with screen flicker that is getting worse. The computer screen will start going thru a crazy screen flicker then will stop and start again. I have already checked cable connection to lcd on motherboard and reseated connection of lcd to motherboard located under the keyboard as someone suggested in another posting I found online that resolved issue for them. I am starting to think it might be a bad inverter or screen because I have hooked up laptop to external monitor and it is running fine with no flickering happening when the flickering is occurring on laptop.
I am attaching a link to a small video I shot of the issue as it is occurring on laptop screen.
Does anyone have any further suggestions?

  • Best Compostion Settings for DVD output

I am working on a project that does involve some regular DV footage but the vast majority of the footage will be animation movs exported from After Effects. These movies are simply pans and zooms on still photos done in After Effects.
What I'm wondering is what sequence settings I should use.
The final output will be to DVD and it will be viewed mainly on TVs, not computers.
One thing I hate is when I do these still pics and on a TV they look jittery or shimmery or alias-y or whatever it's called.
Is there some way to avoid this?
Is it possible to do a movie in progressive scan even though some of the footage is DV?
How about when exporting from AE? Should I use the DV setting or the progressive setting?
Any thoughts will be very helpful.
    Thanks,
    S

    David,
Your answer "Depends on what is causing the problem. Could be one of (or a combination of) many things; resolution too high, areas of fine detail in the image, poor scan, dimpled/textured photo paper, patterns within the image, areas of high contrast within the image, etc. Each of these problems needs to be addressed individually for each photo." intrigues me.
We are scanning the photos as high res (3000x2000 in some cases) TIF files to allow for panning and zooming. They are B+W and do often have high contrast. They also often have areas of fine detail. I don't think poor scanning or dimpled paper are issues.
Could you offer any ideas on how to fix these images for TV viewing? I will say that I have read other posts on here about using deinterlace, flicker filter, etc and I am never pleased with the way the image is degraded with these filters.
The best I have found is to use a slight blur. On this forum people often say less than .5 pixels but that is never enough to eliminate the flicker, shimmer, what-have-you. I am often forced to use a gaussian blur of 1 to 1.5 pixels.
What I don't like about this is how it then looks on a computer monitor (should people pop the DVD into watch on their home computer). On a TV the images generally look fine.
    Any ideas?
Do you think just sticking with regular NTSC DV sequence settings is appropriate?
What about sequence settings for video processing? Would it help at all to use "high quality YUV" rather than "8 bit YUV" since these are animation movies of still pics?
    Thanks for the help,
    S

  • Any iMovie gurus -- stupid nubie question

I'll admit it, I'm a total iMovie newbie, My daughter has more experience with the app than I have. However, I've been asked by said daughter's lacrosse coach to tape the games for later analysis. Since lacrosse is a club sport (not an academic sport) we don't have access to the high school's video equipment, though I can use the press box at the field. With our personal camcorder, the field of view is slightly over half the field. Another parent has volunteered to let me use thier identical camera.
Is it possible with iMovie HD to combine two video feeds in a split frame (correct term???) to provide full field coverage. I realize that I'll have to crop both video feeds to prevent overlap in the middle.
Has anybody had any experience with this type of editing.
I kinda wish, they had asked me to setup a mail/dns/web server for the team. That I can handle.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
I think a better solution would be to shoot with a tripod and cover the whole field panning left to right (or if you prefer right to left)
Shooting with two cameras can only be a plus (both cams on tripods, one with a wide view and the other with a tighter view of the action,) Knowing when to cut between camera footage and when to show split screen or picture in picture is also a plus.
Here Dan provides tips for shooting with 2 or more cameras
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6013.shtml
Just to add to Split Screen methods using iMovie
Slick plugin vol. 4 Hollywood Editions by GeeThree.com has a split screen plugin that does a superb job. It cost $50 but you get 3 additional great plugins effects( picture in picture, vidmix, Matte-tastic,) Plus a Stand alone application "Slick Motion". IMHO this Slick Motion is a very good application for animating photos/still images. No flicker/shimmer/jagged edges you often get in "iMovies Ken Burns effect". The only drawbacks are limited features and you can only import one photo at a time but, the quality is very good. If I didn't already own Photo to Movie or Still Life I think I would use this app before iMovies Ken Burns.
Anyway back to Slick's "Split Screen" plugin easy to use, a real "no-brainer (no manual needed) with adjustment sliders to position either video sources to the right or left (if necessary). Here's the link, if you're interested.

  • Solved flicker problem with newer fglrx drivers

This has been annoying me since the move from 8.29 to 8.30: I have an integrated Xpress 200 on my laptop, and newer proprietary drivers caused the screen to flicker. This has caused me to stick with the older drivers, which restricted upgrades to X.org and the kernel. I was misled by some posts on the Internet to believe that this was the result of using custom modelines.
I have finally solved the problem yesterday. I am posting my findings in case anyone else has been suffering from the same behaviour.
The newer drivers come with an ACPI script, installed under /etc/acpi. The script is invoked every minute and inspects the current power status (i.e., A/C or battery). It then invokes
    aticonfig --set-powermode=[MODE]
to adjust the driver to the new settings. Each time this command is executed, it causes the screen to flicker.
Obviously, there is no need to run the script if the power mode has not changed since the last call. I have therefore modified the script to first check the current driver power mode, and execute the mode command only if a new setting is required.
    I hope this helps someone.

I need my hand held a bit here...
this seems to be the problem I'm having, ie the ac/battery event being called too frequently, but have no idea how to edit the script. I'm on an asus w3n, will it help to replace apci with asus-laptop and apcid daemon...or just add those and leave acpi daemon?
    apologies for my numbnut newbie-ness.

  • Shimmer or flicker after colour correction

    Greetings all,
I had great fun doing a selective colour correction turning a vibrant green ground cover to an autumnal brown, without affecting the figure or stones moving in the picture.
Only problem is, areas which are colour changed shimmer or flicker in intensity. it is subtle, but there, and I am sure very obvious on a big screen.
I have played with edge control, luma and saturation width and softness, as well as de-interlace and flicker filters - to no avail.
I do not know the root of the problem...it is as though colour values which the selective colour correct filter applied to are fluctuating subtly at a high frequency. (nothing visible to this effect in the unfiltered clip). I am stumped.
    any ideas anyone?

I'm going to assume you're looking at this on a CRT (how else would you see the flicker), and that it is rendered at full quality.
Your total levels after correction may be freaking out the monitor. Turn the saturation on in the waveform monitor and you will probably see spikes going through the roof. This is possible with a normal legal signal, but you probably wouldn't get the flicker if wasn't extreme (past 120IRE on and external WFM). An easy fix for this should be to use the broadcast limiter filter, which will take out the problems usually with little visible effect on the picture. You could also just back off a bit on the saturation and/or white levels in the CC.
This seems a little unlikely considering you just removed the vibrant colors instead of adding them. But who knows...
You don't say whether this is a video clip or a still image. If it's a reduced still it may have other issues ythat were masked before. An easy thing to play with is to apply a very gentle Gaussian blur, vertical only. Sometimes as little as .1 (don't know what units this setting is referring to) will do the trick.

  • My iMac 20 inch 2.4 has developed a very annoying flicker. It looks like somebody is messing with the brightness but than really quick. Any ideas on how to solve this problem ?

My almost four year old iMac 20 inch 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo has recently been giving me a headache. The screen is flickering a lot. It looks like somebody is messing with the screen brightness at a really fast rate. I have no idea what it could be but have tried to recalibrate the screen, stopped certain dashboard apps, even changed the desktop picture and screensaver. Has anybody else had the same problem or could somebody help me in getting rid of this flicker. It feels like it is a software issue as it happens intermittently rather than continuous.
    Pleas help me !

  • SOLVED FIXED Lenovo W500 Screen Blank / Screen Flicker on battery after 3 minutes idle

When my W500 is on battery power and idle for 3 minutes the screen will flicker once then when I press a key it will blank briefly again before I can continue using the system.
this drove me crazy for over a year, but I finally found the answer:
Once again (I am a long time thinkpad user) Lenovo has shot their own foot.
To save battery power the default setting is to adjust the refresh rate to 50Hz after three minutes idle.
If you are a writer, nothing is more irksome than having to wait for your screen to blank everytime you go back to type!
go to:  Control Panel -> Power Options
Select Power Manager tab then click "Launch Power Manager"
In the "Power Manager" click the "Power Schemes" tab
then press the "edit" button to edit the currently selected scheme (or whichever one you want to remove flicker from)
    Press the "Next" button
then click "Lower display refresh rate" under battery settings and select "NEVER"
    Ugh.
All of the Wizards that Lenovo adds for managing desktop schemes, backups, etc. are just buggy.
the bios is buggy too, screen blank on reboot, resolution resizing when switching locations.
All the way around, Lenovo starts with a solid peice of hardware, and proceeds to destroy its robustness, with poorly executed features.
(Not that you are reading this Lenovo, but there is a lesson in this!)
anyway, I hope this helps some other poor souls out there!

  • 2010 iMac 27 Inch flicker and black screen, not solved by firmware updates

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I've got a 27 inch 2010 imac that has started to flicker black, and sometimes turn completely black. When this happens the only thing I can do to remedy the issue is to put the computer to sleep and wake it again with the power button on the back. I have tried using the 2009 firmware fixes floating around on the net but to no success, and having seen youtube videos of other people's flicker issues that were fixed by this, and as far as I can see it isn't the same issue. The whole screen flickers, not just a horizontal band.
I have no secondary monitors plugged in, and my only peripheral items are external hard drives. The issue still happens regardless as to what's plugged in.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm awaiting a call from apple support, but they have had me in a queue for a week so I thought it prudent to shop around for help.
    Cheers
    Simon

Here are other links to try: Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • [SOLVED] vi white flicker

Hi, the vi from the repos seems to generate a white flicker on the console whenever I try to do something invalid, such as pressing escape when not in insert mode, rather than sending a beep. The vim on the other hand only sends the beep, so I'm postulating that this effect is intentional, and the vi for some reason thinks that the system doesn't support beeps.
It can become quite blinding on a black console, so does anybody have any experience with this and/or know how to fix it? I remember that I did not have this problem with other distros.
Last edited by Cinolt (2011-05-20 04:02:33)

Your suggestion doesn't seem to work for vi, and I didn't use any config files.
    Hacky solution:
In /etc/inittab, changed the "linux" on these lines to "vt100":
    c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux
    c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux
    c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty3 linux
    c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
    c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
and since I also use XTerm when in X11 I added this to ~/XTerm:
    XTerm*termName: vt100
I wouldn't mind a "real" solution if somebody knows it (one that perhaps just changes a setting within a terminal, rather than just changing the terminal itself)

  • GTX 970 4G screen flicker/black out[Solved!]

My new GTX 970 4G is causing my display to intermittently flicker as well as going completely black.  Sometimes it stays black until I toggle the display input.  Other times everything seems to work fine for a while.  I was able to play Bioshock Infinite for a couple hours with no problem, but as soon as I quit the game it started again.  I'm trying to determine if I have a lemon or a software/hardware compatibility issue.
    Youtube link of problem:
    Computer:
Asus Rampage 3 Formula mobo with latest bios
    Corsair HX850W PSU
    i7 950
    Crucial 16g RAM
    No overclock on my setup
    Previously using vanilla GTX 580
Steps I've tried to fix:  Used both DVI ports on card, plus HDMI.  Nvidia drivers 334.60 and .16, scrubbed previous drivers before installing.  Changed PCIE slots on mobo.

Ok, I'll post some more info and let's see if anything lines up.
    System
    i5-4690K
    MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming
    MSI Z97M Gaming
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB
    Corsair AX 760i  (also tried HX-620 & AX-760)
Monitors Asus VE276Q via DisplayPort - AOC 22 via DVI - Panasonic 37" LCD TV via HDMI
Firstly I noticed the ASUS screen would display a corrupt image, see picture below.
But it would only do it on the ASUS screen, the other two screens would display correctly. If I unplugged or cycled the inputs on the ASUS screen, all screens would drop sync and system would hang. If I waited a few mins I would hear the hardware disconnect sound by windows, but the computer would need a reset to work correctly again.
Plugged in via Dvi or HDMI I would get the same flicker that in the OP's video, but only on the ASUS screen.
Got new cables, didn't fix anything. Am typing this out on the pc in question as we speak, it's been stable last 3 days running a Dell 22" via DisplayPort with AOC & Panasonic still connected also.
Tested without GPU , problem doesn't appear. Looks like these GTX 970's don't like to play with Asus VE27** monitors.

OK, I think it's a problem with my radeon driver. When using the vesa driver, the screen displays well.
Even with disabled 3D acceleration, the screen flickers when using the radeon driver.
My xorg.conf without 3D acceleration (especially look at the modules section):
    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
