Flickering on DVI external monitor connected to 2009 Macbook

This is an ongoing an intermittent problem. At one point Apple phone support suggested that engineers are working on the problem but I haven't heard any updates.
The problem is with a 2009 macbook (13 inch) connected to an apple display (from 2008) by an apple minidisplayport to dvi connector. I don't find this kind of problem when another computer is connected to the display. The problem is unaffected by changing the brightness settings on the display.
The problem is intermittent, it occurs roughly once every five days. It typically occurs after the computer wakes from sleep. It doesn't usually occur when the macbook is first connected to the display (this suggests that it is not a problem with the minidisplayport to dvi cable) and jiggling the cable doesn't cause the problem or make it go away. The problem doesn't occur in particular when the computer is hot, it could be cool, after it is woken from sleep. There are no problems on the macbook's built in display.
The flickering is quite dramatic. Dark flashes extend from the bottom of the display sometimes 50% of the way up the screen and sometime 75% of the way up. The frequency is irregular but during an episode the flickers occur about once every one or two seconds, but sometimes there is a gap of 5 seconds. The episode will come to an end if I put the machine to sleep and wake it again (this also suggests that this is not a problem with the cable connection or the monitor).
It is difficult to get support on this issue. Since the problem is intermittent and may not occur for 5 days it doesn't make sense to try to reproduce it in an apple store. I called apple phone support and the technician recommended adjusting the brightness of the display, resetting the pram, moving some files that record configuration data for the external monitor. These didn't help. The technician acknowledged that apple is working on this problem and recommended that I call back if the problem recurred. I called back a couple weeks later and a technician recommended that I buy another minidisplayport dvi connector - to be frank this is an inconsiderate suggestion for a problem with end to end apple hardware - and I don't expect it to solve the problem.
How should I troubleshoot this problem, or get effective help from Apple? Is this a problem with the graphics card?
John

Hello, i have the same kind of issue.
75% of the time, my external screen works fine, otherwise, i need 5-10 plug/unplug/reboot to make it work...

  • External monitor connected to new MacBook Pro

I have a Samsung LED monitor connected to my brand new MacBook Pro with a mini display port adapter and a DVI-D dual link digital male to male HDTV cable. The external monitor flickers, cuts in and out and has static similar to an analog TV that can't find a signal. I'm wondering if it's the wrong kind of cable? Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same thing but with a 23 inch HP, worked fine with my MBP 13 from 2009 but the 2011 2.4 i5 does the exact same thing as yours!
Very confused and hoping that some one else can help.
    Thanks

I have a 13" Macbook Pro (mid-2009) with an adapter that I have hooked up to the VGA port on PC external monitors in the past. I just bought a 27" iMac (2012) and was wondering if there was any way to make that an external monitor for my Macbook Pro?

  • External monitor loses signal to macbook pro through DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort Adapter

    Hello,
So I had my external monitor connected to my MBP with a DVI cable and a Mini DisplayPort Adapter, for a while already. But sometimes, the monitor would lose signal from the laptop and gives me a white noise screen. Now, the monitor can't receive signal at all, even after I got a new Mini Displayport Adapter. When the monitor and the MBP is connected by the cable and the adapter, the monitor would say "no signal" and the MBP screen would flicker (I think it's trying to connect to the monitor, but can't). The new Mini Display Port Adapter also makes the screen flicker, so I'm not sure if it's the problem is at the adapter or the DVI cable. I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor.
What do you think? Have you ever have a screen flickering problem when your MBP is connected to an external monitor?

I have had the same problem.  By following your suggestions I got to arrangements.  I could not send them off to the side.  When I hit the mirro disply key everyting worked.  I got it solved by clicking in arrangements and setting displays to mirror display.
I am still have a problem of no sound coming through my tv.

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
    Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

  • Flickering screen on external monitor

Hi, when I connect my 2011 Macbook Air to a external monitor, the screen of the external monitor is flickering. Tried different cables and monitors, same problem every time. So my guess is, that it's a problem with the hardware of my MB? Is it easy to fix, will Apple fix it when I'll bring it to the Apple Store? Actually, I can't live without my Macbook for a while, because of my work. The problem was always there, but it's getting worse and annoying, because I bought a new very expensive external monitor.

Same with my macbook pro 13" 7,1 (mid 2010) but also with resolution same or under 1080p

  • Windows 7 dvi external monitor

    Hey,
I have a Lenovo T500 (ATI Mobility HD 3650 graphics) which I recently updated to Windows 7.  I have been using it on an external monitor connected through a dvi cable.  However, today I updated my drivers and bios, and now the laptop no longer even detects the monitor.  What can I do to remedy this situation.  Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

I thought it was supposed to support 4 LCD's, including its own, but mine tells me it can't run more than two.  What do I need to change to get it to run another LCD?  Mine has the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 4200M adaptor.  In the NVIDIA control panel, it shows me the three monitors (x2 24" LCDs and the T520's own display), with the two big ones checked.  If I try to put a check mark beside a third monitor, a popup window opens, which says, "This GPU supports up to two displays."
If I connect using displayport would that matter?  Hopefully not, because both of my external monitors only have VGA and DVI-D.
I don't care what display it uses on startup, as long as it gets to use all three displays once Windows is up and running.  I'm not sure from your comment whether you meant it will never use both DVI monitors with the internal LCD, or just that it will not use them during startup.
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this with me.  It is very helpful.

  • Yosemite Won't Shutdown With External Monitor Connected

    Hi there...
I have a MBP 2010 and I've updated Yosemite from Mavericks. Now I'm running the latest 10.10.2.
Ever since I updated to Yosemite, I have had this problem of my computer won't shutdown when an External monitor is connected. This happens only when I put my computer to sleep. However, if I restart the computer and after logged in to the user and tried to shutdown, it shutdown without any problem. Every time I shutdown it just hangs and I had to force shutdown by press and hold the power button. Which I'm sure is not a proper way.
Right now only my external monitor connected to my MBP. So I did unplugged the ext. monitor and tried shutdown and it works fine. But it think this is the temporary solution that I've found but it is annoying to unplug everytime I wanted to shutdown and plug it back in once the computer is up and running. Which is not idle solution at all.
Am I the only one or a lot of people facing this issue? If there is a solution please share. Very much appreciated. Thanks.

Updated to 10.10.3 and the problem still persist. Still unable to shutdown or restart after wake up from sleep.
Any one affected? Is it something to do with Gfx card?

  • Busted screen, external monitor connection won't work

My PowerBook G4 screen busted a year ago after it fell off a table. I had been successful is using an external monitor up until a couple weeks ago. I have tried a couple monitors and cannot see anything but a white screen. I know a signal is getting from the Mac to the monitor, but only a white screen.
Any ideas on how to get an external monitor connection again?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Bob.
I know a signal is getting from the Mac to the monitor...
How do you know that? Does the external monitor display something other than a white screen at any point during the startup process? In other words, can you really be sure the Mac is ever sending anything other than plain white to the monitor?
As louie says, there's almost no testing you can do without a working display.
What changed a couple of weeks ago, just before you started having this problem with the external monitor? Had you moved the computer and/or the monitor, connected any new devices, disconnected the monitor, upgraded your OS, etc.?

I just got a new LG LED LCD TV and I'm trying to connect my 2009 macbook pro to it. I bought a Belkin Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter at the Apple Store. I also bought the Apple HDMI to HDMI 1.8m cable to connect the computer to the TV. I set up the video fine by using System Preferences-Display. Unfortunately, the sound does not work though. I bought a Dynex stereo mini to RCA "Y" cable to connect my computer's head phone jack to the Audio In RGB/DVI port on my TV. The problem is that I can only get sound to work when I set the input on my TV to AV1. I can only get the video to work when I have the input set to HDMI/DVI. I need to be able to get them to work simultaneously. Can anyone offer me some advice?

Unfortunately, you won't find your TV audio in the System Pref > Sound section. Macbook pro's, before 2010, don't have the ability to send and audio signal through the mini display port. They can only send video. Apple added the new hardware for audio in the 2010 models. You have to use a seperate audio cable from your MBP earphone jack and plug it into your TV. This can be a problem sometimes too. Depending on your TV. I ran an HDMI cable to my TV and I plug my MBP earphone jack into my portable Bose player. That works pretty good.
I think you need to go into System Preferences>Sound, and make sure the output is through the Headphone Port.

    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.
