FMS 3 and Xen Virtualization

Has anyone tried using FMS 3 and Xen in a medium to large
production environment ?
I know that FMS and virtualization is not officially
supported, and that using VMware provides several performance
decreases. But is that also relevant to Xen ?
Xen support an option to activate an independant wallclock,
to remove all clock drifts / jitter.
Since this was one of the major problems with VMware, I would
like to know if there could be additional problems in a virtualized
environment.
Versions,
Linux: 2.6.18 (Debian Xen kernel)
Xen 3.2.0
FMS 3.0.2-r217

DVR is supported from FMS 3.5 and not from FMS 3.
Now coming to the question, yes DVR is done via server-side code (though you can do direct client-side record - but its not preferred way of doing it)
There is no built-in player as such but Adobe does provide ready-to-use solution for DVR which is called dvrcast. You can find dvrcast application on FMS tools page - http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/tool_downloads/ . The solution comes with two server-side applications + FLVPlayback component which can be used on client side.

  • FMS broadcasting and recording

    Hey,
    I have Adobe Flash Media Server installed on ubuntu.
    and I have some questions about operating it...
    1. What do I need to do in order to stream a live H.264
    broadcast?
    will everyone who has a flash player will be able to see it?
    do I need to use a special camera for that? or a special
    player?
    2. How can I record the live broadcast into the server
    directly?
    3. How can I add text on the live broadcast screen?[like
    announcements, headlines and stuff]
    4. How do I make the FMS require a password in order to
    broadcast? meanwhile, anyone who knows the IP can use the server to
    broadcast whatever he wants.
    any help will be greatly appreciated,
    TMO.

    1) Lots of RAM and a decent Camera, the H.264 is better for
    streaming pre recorded movies with a slight buffer, Live Streaming
    will be slower.
    Minimum FMS 3.0.2 as previous versions do not support H.264
    2) FME allows you to stream live to the FMS server and also
    record the stream for later viewing. I tend to record the stream to
    the vod directory with a pre determined file name, this way I can
    then built a link in advanve to allow watchers to view again
    immediately.
    3)Difficult unless you mess with server side scripts etc.
    WebCamMax though will provide this solution.
    4) Not sure about that one...................

  • FMS Loadbalancing and FMS Cluster Testing

    Hey all,
                Hey i'm clustering fms and to test it , then i will implement it.
    I have installed 3 virtual machines of window's server 2003 with the host os as window's server 2003 itself also.
    and i want to cluster fms there test it there .if it's ok there, then i will implement it for my company and if required ,
    I have installed fms in these 4 machines including the host os .how would i cluster fms there and .
    one problem is how do i load balance the edge servers.
    i don't understand , what type of loadbalancing it requires.plz any one can help me step by step how to do that and what do i need to do that ,after that how test my fms cluster. i can't understand it. plz help me step by step , plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....help.....
    we will get a licence version of fms.
    But is it possible test fms cluster in trial version of fms software or not.if possible how many machines can be clustered.
    plz help me.........................
                                                           Many Many  Thanks in advance.........................

    I'd recommend you start here by reading up on the FMS built in scaling solution in edge/origin

  • MOVED: 785GM-E65 and IOMMU for Xen virtualization

    This topic has been moved to Linux/Unix.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=135607.0

    Or maybe a dead mobo.
    Is the Power Supply able to feed a fan for more than 30 minutes ? It can happen the PSU to start up and because of a failure capacitor to shut down itself after 5-10 minutes by it s own.
    You ll need to swap mobo ,CPU and PSU to see what happens.RMA the 3 hardware pieces and see what the reseler tells you.
    I would recheck the PSU too having in mind the failure even if it looks good.
    When you get all back working stay with the multimeter connected and see if there are any spikes when you boot or when you load heavy aplications.
    Any overclocking on the machine ?
    Have you tryed with the mobo outside of the case on some wooden surface ?

  • How to setup grub2 with arch linux and xen, lvm on luks

    OK, so I tried downloading this package from AUR:  https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen-git/ , but that has patching problems as noted in the comments.  It looks like the packagebuild sets up all the xen stuff for you, but I can't seem to get the package to install because of the error's while patching.  If anyone can point me in the right direction on what all the extra files in the PKGBUILD are for or how to debug problems with PKGBUILDs not working because of patches.
    So next I just tried to compile the latest xen from git://xenbits.xen.org/xen.git (with ./configure, make, make install) and that seemed to go fine, but I'm a bit confused:
    1.  Do I have to do any additional configuration for xen when working with arch linux?  On ubuntu I could just compile the source, update grub, and make sure to start the x services at runtime.
    2.  How do I set up grub to load xen with this setup?  Right now this is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda3:vgStorage"

    I've tried throwing in a line like: XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE="cryptdevice=/dev/sda3:vgStorage", but nothing new shows up on the grub boot menu.

    As for XEN.... well you could always try QEMU/KVM or LXC.
    As for the LVM2-on-LUKS/dm-crypt
    My /etc/mkinitcpio.conf looks like this...

    Things to note:
    Numerical UUID is the UUID of the ROOT partition.
    Alphabetical UUIS is the BOOT partition
    hd1,msdos2 AND ahci1,msdos2 are how the Grub Bootloader numbers the drives not Linux.
    I have my BOOT partition on a USB stick, and it is the Second partition.
    So, that would make it, Device 2 and Partition 2
    Device numbering starts at 0
    Partition numbering starts at 1
    Oh, and note that you don't need ":allow-discards" ... at all but certainly if you don't have an SSD. Also note that I included the line numbers so it is very clear that I didn't post the whole thing, but instead what I thought was relevant. Finally, I am loading modules that I don't even need, but what the hell... if it ain't broke, don't fix it

  • 10g ASM on Logical Volumes vs. Raw devices and SAN Virtualization

    We are looking at setting up our standards for Oracle 10g non-rac systems. We are looking at the value of Oracle ASM in our environment.
    As per the official Oracle documentation, raw devices are preferred to using Logical Volumes when using ASM.
    From here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b15658/appa_aix.htm#sthr
    ef723
    "Note: Do not add logical volumes to Automatic Storage Management disk groups. Automatic Storage Management works best when you add raw disk devices to disk groups. If you are using Automatic Storage Management, then do not use LVM for striping. Automatic Storage Management implements striping and mirroring."
    Also, as per Metalink note 452924.1:
    "10) Avoid using a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) because an LVM would be redundant."
    The issue is: if we use raw disk devices presented to ASM, the disks don't show up as used in the unix/AIX system tools (i.e. smit, lspv, etc.). Hence, when looking for raw devices on the system to add to filesystems/volume groups/etc., it's highly possible that a UNIX admin will grab a raw device that is already in use by Oracle ASM.
    Additionally, we are using a an IBM DS8300 SAN with IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) in front of it. Hence, we already have storage virtualization and I/O balancing at the SAN/hardware level.
    I'm looking for a little clarification to the following questions, as my understanding of their responses seem to confict:
    QUESTION #1: Can anyone clarify/provide additional detail as to why Logical volumes are not preferred when using Oracle ASM? Does the argument still hold in a SAN Virtualized environment?
    QUESTION #2: Does virtualization at the software level (ASM) make sense in our environment? As we already have I/O balancing provided at the hardware level via our SVC, what do we gain by adding yet another level of I/O balancing at the ASM level? Or as in the
    arguments the Oracle documentation makes against using Lvm, is this an unnecessary redundant striping (double-striped or in our case triple-striped/plaid)?
    QUESTION #3: So does SAN Virtualization conflict or compliment the virtualization provided by ASM?

    After more research/discussions/SR's, I've come to the following conclusion.
    Basically, in an intelligent storage environment (i.e. SVC), you're not getting a 100% bang for the buck by using ASM. Which is the cat's meow in a commodity hardware/unintelligent storage environment.
    Using ASM in a SVC environment potentially wastes CPU cycles having ASM balance i/o that is already balanced on the backend (sure if you shuffle a deck of cards that are already shuffled you're not doing any harm, but if they're already shuffled - then why are you shuffling them again??).
    That being said, there may still be some value for using ASM from the standpoint of storage management for multiple instances on a server. For example, one could better minimize space wastage by being able to share a "pool" of storage between mulitiple instances, rather than having to manage space on an instance-by-instance (or filesystem by filesystem) level.
    Also, in the case of having a unfriendly OS where one is unable to dynamically grow a filesystem (i.e. database outage required), there would be a definite benefit provided by ASM in being able to dynamically allocate disks to the "pool". Of course, with most higher-end end systems, dynamic filesystem growth is pretty much a given.
    In the case of RAC, regardless of the backend, ASM with raw is a no-brainer.
    In the case of a standalone instance, it's a judgement call. My vote in the case of intelligent storage where one could dynamically grow filesystems, would be to keep ASM out of the picture.
    Your vote may be different....just make sure you're putting in a solution to a problem and not a solution that's looking for a problem(s).
    And there's the whole culture of IT thing as well (i.e. do your storage guys know what you're doing and vice versa).....which can destroy any technological solution, regardless of how great it is.

  • FMS: NAT and Firewall

    I've run into one roadblock after another with Cirrus (Stratus) - basically, even the Adobe Videophone example refuses to work in the 'real world' where there's a mix of NAT and firewall configurations outside the developer's control. (http://forums.adobe.com/message/1064983#1064983 and thread at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/736422?tstart=0)
    My question is whether Flash Media Server 4 has the same sort of issues? We don't want to pay up to install and run our own FMS only to discover that we won't be able to provide a P2P service to our end users because they're scattered around the Internet with a mix of mobile devices and computers lying behind NAT and firewall devices that we can't predict.

    FMS4 and Cirrus should behave identically as far as facilitating P2P communications on the open Internet.
    as the referenced article describes, with some combinations of NATs and firewalls, P2P communication is impossible.  RTMFP tries really hard to establish connections in the cases where direct communication is possible, but will not function in cases where direct communication is not possible.
    we believe direct communications should be possible for the majority of Internet users, but recognize that it won't be possible for 100% of users.

  • Kona 3 [and XENA] for FCP Questions

    Is the XENA 2Ke compatible with the Macintosh platform and FCP, and if so which is the recommended version of OSX and FCP?
    I have previously read someone stating that you can use this card on both platforms therefor negating the need to purchase a Mac only Kona 3.
    I am doubtful of this however your immediate response / confirmation / denial of this is greatly appreciated.
    ALSO
    Is anyone aware of news relating to an upgrade of the Kona 3 card [ie Kona 4 or a Mac and PC compatible XENA card]?
    I am looking at assembling a new HD online capable suite in the next few weeks and am hoping to avoid purchasing ie a Kona 3 card just before the release of [theoretically] a Kona 4 card [possibly at NAB 08]. Being that 4K / Red post are and should be at a premium in the coming months I would like to assemble a post solution that can handle for example a short form 4K online [if possible].
    I know I am dealing with a lot of what-ifs but for the investment I need to make I will be asking similar questions to these everywhere I can including the forums such as this.

    *3. Monitoring 2K?* What are you using to monitor 2K, HD Jerry?
    Many guys in similar situations to myself over here in Australia are using Apple Cinema Displays with a Decklink HD-Link Pro box for monitoring. Obviously the 30" Cinema Display has the resolution to handle 2K monitoring but is it suitable in your view?
    Realistically I am looking at offering an immediate service based mainly on a HD offline / online workflow. I would however like to future proof myself as best I can by assembling hardware that can handle 2K with reliability, stability and to reasonable levels of accuracy and complexity.
    *Up until now [NAB] I've been looking at something in the order of the following setup:*
    *Online Machine*
    Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    8gb RAM
    1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3GB/s
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB (Stereo 3D, two dual-link DVI)
    One 16x SuperDrive
    AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)
    Apple wireless Mighty Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
    *Third Party Card / Hardware IO:*
    Kona 3 with K-Box
    *Offline Machine:*
    Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    4GB (2 x 1GB)
    1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3GB/s
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)
    One 16x SuperDrive
    AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)
    Apple wireless Mighty Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
    Monitoring:
    JVC DT-V24L1DGE 1920x1080 Pro HD LCD with 1:1 pixel monitoring / no scaling and all the regular / required inputs and features
    *BUP / Archival Purposes / Proofs:*
    Lacie D2 Ext Blu Ray Burner
    Storage:
    Caldigit's HD Pro OR G Technology's G Speed OR G Speed es [though not sold on G Speed es - great price point but really doesn't have the sustained drive speeds. Great for online SD, Pro Res and possibly basic DVCPro HD / HD Sequences etc. [www.g-technology.com states "Two G-SPEED eS units and the G-Tech PCIe RAID controller support all of the above plus 10-bit, 1080i/60 HD playback in RAID 0 or RAID 5 mode."]. Will be looking into the new Apple owned Promise RAIDs too; your thoughts on these? Unfortunately I don't really have the budget for SANman, X-Serve, Fibrejet etc solutions at present but for the right job, that would obviously change.
    I really appreciate the idea of how you are working with 2K, though your description was not really that detailed it definitely sounds smooth. Do you think that I am heading in the right direction in your opinion with the gear I have in mind, and is the minimum 2K future proofing concept I have a valid one?
    Thanks for taking the time to read this post, and hopefully reply to some or all.

  • What is load balancer in fms cluster and how to configure it and testing fms clustering

    Hey guys,
                I am new to fms and clustering the fms server in origin-edge mode.But i am confused actually what is load balancer and how to configure it .
    After configuring , how to test and confirm that fms clustering is working.Is there any one can help me, plz....................
                                                                                                   thanks in Advance........

    Flash Media Server does not come bundled with a load balancer.  In theory, one deploys FMS in an edge/origin configuration like this
    1 Origin ----> N Edges ------> Customer Traffic
    The idea here is that N edges shoulder the load for most customers with a single origin coordinating resources like VOD content or script access.  The issue that remains is "how do I spread customers over the N edges" and that's where load balancing comes in.  Most customers use a prepackaged load balancing solution - as an Adobe staffer I can't recommend any of them over the other, but you should be able to get some recommendations here along with just googling for it.  The short answer contained here though is, you're going to have to find one outside of FMS if that's needed for your setup.

  • FMS 3 and JW Player

    Hello, I have been trying to get an answer to my questions
    regarding FMS 3 but to no avail...hopefully someone can help me
    here..
    I have a flash file and use JW Player as my player...I can
    stream inside my network. I have a changing IP address so I
    assigned 192.xx.x.xx to my server..
    I use Apache for web server. I use the code for linking to
    the file and works great inside my network...How can i get this to
    play outside my network?
    here is how the player is setup:
    <script type='text/javascript'
    src='swfobject.js'></script>
    <script type='text/javascript'>var s1 = new
    SWFObject('player.swf','player','500','400','9');
    s1.addParam('allowfullscreen','true');
    s1.addParam('allowscriptaccess','always');
    s1.addParam('flashvars','streamer=rtmp://192.xx.x.xx/vod&file=Wedding.flv&image=preview1.j pg');
    s1.write('preview');
    s1.addParam('salign','sr')
    </script>
    Any help would be great...

    Hi egrogg011,
    Your local ip address is often different then the ip address
    to the outside world. Between the computer and the internet there
    could be a router or something like that. When you want that
    someone from the internet could connect to your server you would
    have to change 192.xx.x.xx to your internet ip address. Next to
    that you will need to configure your router to forward the ports
    that the media server uses because they are a lot of times closed
    or not redirected to the correct ip.

  • FMS Policy and VideoSampleAccess

    Hello! I'm trying to access the raw audio and video samples
    from an RTMP stream and I've done my research but can't overcome
    the last step. I have FMS 3.0 installed locally and authoring in
    Flash CS3 with the latest patches and updates. In the
    Application.xml file I added the two lines:
    <AudioSampleAccess
    enabled="true">/</AudioSampleAccess>
    <VideoSampleAccess
    enabled="true">/</VideoSampleAccess>
    inside the <Application> element to allow access from
    the client, and rebooted the server to make sure it took hold. (and
    the XML is in the standard VOD application folder). Then I fire up
    CS3 that is trying to use SoundMixer.computerSpectrum to read the
    audio samples, but I keep getting the following sandbox issue.
    SecurityError: Error #2123: Security sandbox violation:
    SoundMixer.computeSpectrum:
    file:///C|/Users/me/Documents/flashstuff/monitor.swf cannot access
    rtmp://localhost/vod. No policy files granted access.
    at flash.media::SoundMixer$/computeSpectrum()
    at monitor_fla::MainTimeline/onEnterFrame()
    I'm sure its something simple thats missing. Also, the video
    plays in my client without any problems. Any ideas? Thank you very
    much for your help!

    As described in default live/vod apps that comes with FMS3.0;
    you need to explicitly write these to lines in the server-side
    script.
    // Inside Function :application.onConnect = function(
    p_client, p_autoSenseBW ){
    p_client.audioSampleAccess = "/";
    p_client.videoSampleAccess = "/";
    }
