Folders added to "Desktop Pictures" not visible in System Prefs...

Hello,
I am trying to add additional wallpaper images to the "/Library/Desktop Pictures" directory. I can add images to this dir and they are visible in the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences, however newly added folders are not (I would like to add folders so I can keep the pictures organized).
How do I get Desktop & Screen Saver prefs to see new folders?
-Steve

Hi Mike,
Thanks very much! That did the trick!
Just so you know, there is one additional file I edited to make the folders appear with the desired name. Basically if you just add the text to Collections.plist it will display the folder but with the name on the identifier tag. If you want the folder to show a name other than the identifier you have to edit the Collections.strings file in the English.lproj directory.
Here are the instructions I've put together for this whole procedure:
--------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
- cd /System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane/Contents/Resou rces/DesktopPictures.prefPane/Contents/Resources
- sudo vi Collections.plist
- add additional items in the following form:
identifier = myPatterns;
path = "/Library/Desktop Pictures/My Patterns";
showScalingPopUp = YES;
- save file and exit
THEN
- cd English.lproj
- sudo vi Collections.strings
add line entries in the following format:
myPatterns = "My Patterns";
(the tag on the left of the '=' sign must match the identifier noted above)
save file and exit
--------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get the scaling drop-down box to appear; you know, the drop-down box that gives you the following choices on how to display the image: Fill screen, Stretch to fill screen, Center, Tile.
I see in the Collections.plist file there is a tag for showScalingPopUp and I've set this to YES on some folders, but it doesn't bring up the drop-down box when I select an image within that folder.
I can certainly live without this b/c it's not that critical, but still it's curious...

I need some help with faces within Iphoto.
I tagged all the people in my pictures. Most of the people are added in the right folder in ''faces''. However some are missing. When I go back to the particular picture and press the name of a specifi persons it takes me to her folder in ''faces'' where this particular picture is missing.

  • Apple Desktop pictures do not appear in System Prefs

I tried to change my desktop picture and discovered that there are none of the apple images showing in the system prefs for Desktop & Screen Saver. The folders are there (Apple images, nature, plants, etc) but the folders are empty.
Digging via the finder I found in Library/Desktop Pictures all of the missing files but Prefs does not apparently see them.
The default Aurora was there after 10.5.5 upgrade, then I replaced it with one of my own from the user/Pictures folder which shows in the prefs window. All of those pictures still show in prefs.
    What is wrong?

    Derryl S wrote:
Conclusion, there is now something about my account that no longer can see the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder. Why is unknown still.
Usually, a bad preference file or incompatible login item is the culprit, although it could also be corrupted data in a user cache.
For the first, you can try moving likely suspects from ~/Library/Preferences to a desktop temp folder, then logging out & back in or restarting to see if the problem is gone. If not replace the old preference from the temp folder to its original location to restore the old preferences. One general way that may help locate suspect pref files is to change the preference in the normal way while ~/Library/Preferences is sorted by date changed -- the file storing the preferences should be very near the top of the list.
You can also run a terminal command that checks the syntax of most preference files. It won't indicate all problems but it is worth a shot. In Terminal type:
    sudo plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
followed by pressing the return key. At the password prompt, enter you admin account password & press return again. It won't be echoed to the screen. If you get nothing besides the prompt for the next command, those prefs are syntactically correct. Otherwise, remove the indicated pref file as above & test.
If desired, repeat this for the main system-wide preference folder with this command:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
Note: since your new account has no problems, it is highly unlikely a system preference is the problem.
For login items, check the list in the accounts system preference. Suspect anything that isn't from Apple. You can list them here in a new post if you have any questions about them.
If the problem is a bad user cache, a third party utility like Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner will allow you to "clean" (delete) them. Try this as a last resort, since caches speed up the operation of your Mac & will need to be rebuild by the system, causing one-time delays until this is done.

  • I accidentally installed Genieo and now my folders on my desktop are not showing my files

I accidentally downloaded some version of install.mac.  I have used the uninstall application and this has reset my browser setting on chrome which is good! However, I can no longer see my files from opening any folder on my desktop.  I have restarted my computer many times and I still see the same thing when I open my folders.  Please help!  I believe it was this site that downloaded the virus  https://www.voipcheap.co.uk/dashboard
    Mac os x 10.9.5
    Macbook Air

I went through all of these steps.  I also downloaded AVG antivirus.  It detected nine files that may have been malware and I deleted them.  I have restarted my computer several times after this and the folders on my desktop are still not displaying properly.  Also my folders are unable to be dragged around the desktop.  The whole desktop is messed up.

  • ARD Client Settings are not saving in System prefs. Any thoughts?

I am using ARD 2.2 from my Powerbook. It is running 10.4.3. Was able to create connections for observing with a G5 iMac running 10.4.5 , another PowerBook (which required an ARD client upgrade) running 10.3.9, and a G3 iBook running 10.3.9 with no issues. When trying to configure a Mac mini running 10.3.9, I am able to enter the System Prefs as the admin, set ARD to run using the admin account (in the exact same fashion as the other machines), turn on all available options and click the OK button. I can then go right back to the Sharing control panel where ARD is turned on but none of the other settings, including the checked account remain active. Has anyone else seen this condition? I tried reinstalling ARD client 2.2 and deleting the remote desktop prefs to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

You might try fixing file permissions (using Disk Utility) on the mini. It kind of sounds like a permissions problem.

  • "Moving calendars to server account" and I can not uncheck in system pref /icloud/ calendars -osx 10.8.5

So i have read many discussions and didnt find how can i fix it my problem.
I cant uncheck in system pref /icloud/ calendars , because it is grey.
I have never used icloud for calendar...i think i will loose all of my data if i clean the caches...and i cant access to export command in Calendars...
What happens with you, Apple???? The last two years was THE SHAME!!!! I cant believe how many problems got it, more than 8 years before it...
    Anyone can help me????
    THX!!!!

i had the same issue recently. user melisolaris posted this and solved my problem:
    1. Force quit iCal and Reminders.
    2. On your computer, unlink Calendars and Reminders from iCloud:
    > System Preferences > iCloud > Uncheck Calendars AND Reminders
(I did this because my Reminders uses my Calenders; I set deadlines for reminders, etc. Also, because my reminders weren't syncing with my iCloud as they should.)
    3. It'll ask if you want to delete the calendar and reminder events from your computer. Say yes because you should already have the most up-to-date copy on your iCloud.
    4. Open iCal. It should no longer display the "moving calendars to server account" message.
    5. Add your iCloud account to iCal.
    > Calendar > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW
    6. Give it a minute to update. You should see all your iCloud calendar events with no error message.
    7. Quit iCal. Open Reminders.
    8. Add your iCloud account to Reminders.
    > Reminders > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW
    9. Test the two programs by adding test events and reminders to see if they show up on your iPhone and your Macbook.

  • IBook TrackPad not recognized in System Prefs?

    Hello,
I have the Mid-2005 1.42ghz iBook. It's a great machine that I love except for one thing....the scrolling TrackPad. It does not work and is not recognized in System Preferences. It does not show up under Keyboard & Mouse. I've taken the top-case off to check the cables and they all looked tight and even replaced the top-case with a new one and it still doesn't work. I've used the 10.4.4 Tiger install discs as that is what it was shipped with. I'm out of ideas here and am hoping that someone can help me. I've resorted to using a mouse along side of it and it's aggravating. Please don't tell me "Logic Board Replacement." Thanks!

    Hey PM and Cornelius,
Well the first thing that comes to mind is that the track pad, keyboard, power and charger are all controlled by that PMU99 that I've been bugging everyone about.
    Here's my other post:
"There's been a lot of problems lately on this group with the above mentioned issues. It could be a PMU problem. The PMU is actually a tiny computer within the computer. It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard ( and trackpad )
The 12-inch PowerBook G4 can operate from a 15-volt power outlet on an airliner, however for safety reasons the computer will not allow battery charging. In order for the computer to detect the connection to airline power, the airline power cable should have a sense resistor of 24.3K ohms connected between the power plug's shell and ground.
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices"
    Try resetting it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't work try what I call a deep PMU reset.
Pull all power including the battery, push the power button to remove residual charge in soft start capacitors.
Then walk away from it for at least 10 hours.
Now PMU99 has been responsible for soft start in Macs apparently since the first G3s and run all the way thru the G5s. From:
    http://www.theapplemuseum.com/index.php?id=30
    "Power Macintosh G3/G4/G5 clock/softstart chip: PMU99"
So this deep reset has worked for G3s going back to the Beige and recently a G4 Sawtooth with a 1.5 GB CPU upgrade.
I've also seen problems with the super capacitors that sort of take the place of the PMU battery but that has been on older G3s. These are there to hold settings during battery swaps and not sure what else. I've seen two go open but am not sure what that would mean to all the PMU functions. If it shorted I could see that as a real problem."

  • Desktop Pictures Not Showing Up in Desktop Preference Pane

In a previous discussion, the user reported this behavior:
"I clicked on System Preferences, cause I wanted to adjust the
color of surrounding the image I had on my desktop.
"I then clicked on Desktop & Screen Saver.
"I then clicked on the little "color adjuster window" and my
desktop image disappeared, and my screen suddenly reverted back
to the default leopard desktop image. That purple nova haze thing.
"And now, when I click on the "Apple Images, Nature, Plants, Black
& White, Abstract, Solid colors, Pictures Folder," under the "Apple"
    Menu,nothing happens.
"And when I click the folders I have under the "Folders" Menu listing
called "Desktop" and "Black and White," nothing happens. None of the
images show up in the window.
I had the exact same problem. Deleting the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist fixes the problem.

Yeah, when a change in settings suddenly either has new settings not sticking, or reverts back to some default setting, then a removal of the associated preferences file seems to be the best fix. For users who're unfamiliar with them though, they may be tough to pinpoint.

  • How to clear folders added to Desktop & Screensaver?

Last March, BDAqua wrote that I trash the following preference files in my User/Library to clear the folders I've added to System Preferences' Desktop & Screensaver:
    1. /Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    2. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.(12 digit hex number).plist
    3. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.(12 digit hex number).plist
I've tried that a few times and the folders remain there. Can a Terminal command get rid of them?

I thought the benefits would go to all Macs with more than one core. If that's the case, I'm sticking with Tiger until I have to get a new computer, which could be a while. Thanks for straightening me out on that. Now I'm even more disappointed how quickly the Core Duos were replaced with Core 2 Duos. I should have waited a few more months before buying this computer.

  • Finder not responding/desktop items not visible

Help!! Two nights ago the power flickered off and back on while I was using my Mac; I was playing a trial version of a game downloaded from Big Fish Games (large file) when the power went off. There was a huge storm coming through, so as soon as the power came back on (and the mac) I forced shut down.
since then at startup I cannot get finder to work or my desktop items to display. I can access most programs that are in my dock (iPhoto, Safari, Pages, etc) but not some (such as Photoshop Elements).
I've safe booted, but no change.
All possible solutions I've read about online require accessing the applications folder. I'm far from Mac savvy, and the only way I know of getting to my apps folder is through Finder; since it's hung up I can't get there. Also all references I've seen to run Terminal also start through the finder.
I have everything backed up on an external hard drive which is currently disconnected from the Mac (I can't get the Mac to recognize it now when I reconnect the cable).
Any thoughts?? Could finder be hung up on that big game file? If so, any ideas how to access it to remove it (without using Finder)?
I really appreciate anyone's help with this!

To have used a utility such as AppZapper to remove the newer QuickTime version
and its new parts, including install package receipt, it may have been possible to
reinstall the earlier version of QuickTime that was not problematic.
When one knows where the exact parts reside in the system, reverting to an older
version of installed software is a little easier. As with iTunes, reverting does require
one to find several parts and sometimes odd bits, and remove them to do the task.
(In that instance, I save .dmg files of installers for use if needed, to reinstall offline
and this also is handy for when a specific version is no longer available online.)
But, given other possibilities, that may not have solved an issue which could have
been caused by some conflict in software including user-added third-party apps.
Sounds like you resolved the issue adequately, at least until the next system update.
When going from OS X 10.4.x to OS X 10.5, sometimes old system parts remain in
the active system folder and they can make things run amok and act odd. Same in
the older upgrade path from Panther to Tiger; a careful look through the resulting
upgraded system is recommended before running the software update & adding more.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Random desktop pictures not very random

I selected desktop background to randomly use iPhoto pictures. Changes every minute.
Though I have thousands of pictures, it seems to "prefer" only a few events, and even within those events, certain 'clusters' of photos.
    Not very random, it seems.
    Any reason for this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It may be a bad preference file. Move this file to your Desktop
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.plist.
Then log out and back in, or restart.
