Font fail

I've got a misbehaving font. The font in question is proggy tiny (easily found via google.)
I'm certain the font is installed correctly, as demonstrated by:
fc-list | grep -i proggy
ProggyTiny.pcf:style=Regular
and
xlsfonts | grep -i proggy
-windows-proggytiny-medium-r-normal--0-0-96-96-c-0-iso8859-1
-windows-proggytiny-medium-r-normal--10-80-96-96-c-60-iso8859-1
The main source of trouble is that this is supposed to be my xterm font but is not working. In my ~/.Xdefaults:
xterm*geometry: 105x56
xterm*font: -*-proggytiny-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
xterm*boldMode: false
However, xterm defaults to some other crappy font. Additionally, it spits out to STDOUT:
xterm
xterm: cannot load font -*-proggytiny-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
xterm: cannot load font -*-proggytiny-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Further, xfontsel lists the font as expected, but selecting the font causes the app to misbehave, and the font is not displayed at the bottom as it should be.
I'm certain that this font is not corrupted. It was scp'ed from a machine where it works as expected, and I've verified that the md5sums match.
Any ideas?

Installing from aur worked. There's absolutely no difference in the file -- same permissions, location, size, md5 checksum.... it works, though, so thanks for the tip..!
Perhaps I had a stale cache of a bad version of it or something to that effect.

  • How do i fix sound font fail for audigy 2

    all of the suddon my sound stopped working and my diagnostics say sound font fail. how do i fix this problem?

    I had the exact same problem updating the drivers for my Audigy 2 Platinum EX, but I think I managed to solve the problem. This was quite awhile ago, but I think I remember how I got it to work.
    First of all, which update did you download? The "Digital Rights Management" driver update was the one giving me that problem, and this was after installing the main drivers and programs from my Audigy 2 CD. But, I think the reason why it gives this message is because you need to install one of the other driver updates first, then install this DRM update. Look under the driver details and it says the following:
    "<EM>Requirements</EM>:
    Microsoft? Windows? XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 </LI>
    Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 or Audigy 2 ZS series internal audio device </LI>
    <EM>EAX 4.0 ADVANCED HD Driver Patch Update for Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS (released on 29 March, 2004) installed, or Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS Driver Update (released on 29 July, 2004) installed</EM>."</LI>
    Strangely enough, it appears this update requires you install an older driver update first (EAX4DRV_AUDIGY2__84_50.exe) then afterwards try running the Digital Rights Management update.
    I think this is right, but I'm not 00% sure.

  • [SOLVED] "Loading console font" fails at boot

    Hello everyone,
    At each boot, the line where it loads the console font fails. The font configured in rc.conf is "161", it's the one by default on installation.
    /var/log/boot
    Loading Console Font: 161 ^[[231G [BUSY] ^[[231G [FAIL]
    It's a fresh install done today.
    Any idea why it would fail that?
    Last edited by blno (2012-01-06 21:18:47)

    Navigate to /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts, pick the font, test it by issuing
    setfont font-name.gz
    -- and if everything works OK, add it to rc.conf and rebuild your initramfs.
    Edit (because I'm extremely short-minded): while adding the font to the rc.conf file, do so without any extensions, eg. Uni2-Fixed16. And 2: before you rebuild your initramfs, it's wise to add "consolefont" to HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf. It's not obligatory, but this way the new font will become active at the earliest boot stage.

  • ""selected font failed during last operation." and " there is a problem with generator" application error

    For PSDs I have created in older versions of Photoshop CC 2014 I am getting errors when opening / trying to save. They seem to be either Generator or font related. Interestingly, PSDs created in newer versions of PS CC 2014 have no issues, even when using same fonts.
    I am getting the error messages:
    When I open the older PSD files, (again created or saved in older versions of PS CC 2014) I am asked to update fonts. If I do I get the error.
    'Selected font failed during last operation'
    When I try to don't try to update fonts and then I try to play with the file I get the following error.
    'There is a problem with Generator. Please quit Photoshop and try again. If the problem persists, remove any third-party plugins or try re-installing photoshop.
    I don't have any third party plugins that I can see.
    I have re-installed multiple times.
    I need to use this program and I am paying for your services. I am actually on the phone now with 'help desk' and have been on hold for 22 minutes.
    Please Help

    When I installed the Apple programs, mobile device application did not uninstall by itself. I had to go to c://program files/common files/apple/mobile device application (or something like that) and manually delete the contents and the folders. I have a 64 bit version so I also had to visit c://program files (x86)/common files/apple/mobile application device (or similar) and also manually delete the files and folders. I had to delete the files before I could delete the folders. This manual part is probably tripping everyone up, because it's not as easy as simply hitting uninstall in the control panel. But the instructions are there. I hope this helps you.

  • 'Selected font failed' error

    Just an hour ago everything was working as usual. Then suddenly, half of my fonts don't show the 'sample' preview in the drop menue, and while scrolling the list, if I scroll over one of the empty fonts, this error pops up:
    Selected font failed during last operation. If problem persists, please disable the font.
    I'd have to disable practically my entire font folder. What's happening?

    Moving the discussion to Adobe Type.

  • Selected font failed during last operation

    When i'm trying to use the text tool I get the 'Selected font failed during last operation' message.
    How can i fix this?

    Windows 7 Pro 6.1.7601 SP 1 build 7601
    Photoshop CC 2014.2.1
    This is a clean install of photoshop. No plug-ins have been added, no fonts have been activated/added to system and no preferences have been changed from defaults.
    When I open a .psd created on OSX I first get the "Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now? [No] [Update]" warning. Clicking 'Update' crashes the file and shows the "Selected font failed during last operation. If problem persists, please disable the font." error.
    If I re-open the file and this time click 'No' EVERY SINGLE CLICK ON ANYTHING produces the "Selected font failed during last operation. If problem persists, please disable the font." error.
    Selecting a Layer then gives the, "There is a problem with Generator. Please quit Photoshop and try again. If the problem persists, remove any third-party plug-ins or try reinstalling Photoshop." error.
    Reinstalling does nothing to fix the issue and again, this is a clean install.
    I've worked with Photoshop for over 20 years and have never seen anything like this. Normally when there's any kind of font mismatch between two systems no matter if its windows to windows or mac to windows, the font simply defaults to the system default once you attempt to edit it. Adobe has broken a once killer app.
    Now, as far as the Font Test... script, if I leave "Clear Font Cache" checked and click Start, I get the error,
    "Failed to get the path for font cache files:
    - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\tmp00000001
    - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\tmp00000001
    - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\tmp00000001
    Please delete the files manually to clear font cache.
    Even with show hidden files turned on there is no folder or file by that name.
    If I uncheck "Clear Font Cache" then says every single one of my fonts is damaged. My system fonts folder only includes those installed by windows and its apps.
    Please please fix this!

  • System fonts failing to load/enable correctly

    On start up my mac doesn't fully enable all the system fonts. Arial 9/10 times fails to load regular and bold weights and Verdana is problematic too. My current work around is to manually enable them in Font Book which is beginning to annoy me – anyone know a more permanent solution?
    This problem can cause software to display type incorrectly, especially noticed on websites.
    I have recently performed a clean install on my mac mini with os 10.8.2.
    I do run Suitcase Fusion 4, however i don't think this is the cause of my problem as it is running well. In my view the problem lies with Font Book as this is the only way I can temporarily resolve my issue.
    Any help is most welcome.

    I've manually enabled the problematic fonts in Fontbook and in Fusion 4 I have turned on the same fonts permanently in the System Fonts folder. Hopefully this will ensure that if i turn the mac off for what ever reason, on relaunch the problematic system fonts will auto load. However i'm still interested to hear from any expert out there who can offer me a better solution.

  • Font failing to show properly in dialogues

    So this is happening. Don't know why. I'm a designer, so I install a lot of new fonts, so it might have to do with that. But I have no idea how to fix this. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

    Usually caused by corrupt font cache files.
    Restart in Safe Mode (restart and hold down the Shift key). When you get to the desktop, restart normally.
    The resets Font Book's database and clears all cache files of the user account logged into in Safe Mode.
    If that alone doesn't do it, then clear all of the font caches files.
    Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
    This command removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Spark DataGrid Embedded Font Quandary

    01.  In everything that follows, I am talking about the latest [21328] version of the SDK, not that I believe that my problems have anything to do with that release, just so anyone interested and willing to help will know the version.
    02.  My application happens to be rooted in AIR's WindowedApplication, but again, I do not think that has any impact on my problems; I believe the same results would obtain for a Flex Application.
    03.  I have a custom renderer for the Spark DataGrid which extends DefaultGridItemRenderer.  It works fine. Its primary job is to change the font characteristics of each row in the list as a visual clue to the user as to the specific nature of the content that is accessible.  Some entries are just in the Regular font, some in Bold, some in Italic, and some in Bold-Italic.
    04.  I have, for most of the project, embedded the necessary fonts like this:
        [Embed (source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-Caption.otf", fontName="ArnoPro_BI_4",
            fontStyle="italic",
            fontWeight="bold",
            mimeType="application/x-font",
            embedAsCFF="true",
            unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac")]
        private const ArnoPro_BI_4:Class;
    As I said, that all works just as advertized.  But, that method of embedding carries the somewhat painful burden of slower compilations, so for the last 24 hours I have unseccessfully been trying to replace that with:
    [Embed (source = "../resources/assets/ArnoPro_BI_4.swf", symbol="ArnoPro_BI_4")]
    private const ArnoPro_BI_4:Class;
    where the swf file was produced via fontswf, using this incantation:
    fontswf -4 -u U+0021-U+00ff,U+20ac-U+20ac -b -i -a ArnoPro_BI_4 -o ArnoPro_BI_4.swf C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-Caption.otf
    06.  By all that is holy, the two different means of embedding the font ought to yield the same result, but they do not.  I have debugging code inserted to print out the list of fonts upon initiation of the application, and they are identical.  Both means of embedding do succeed in getting the embedded fonts into the .swf, but the attempt to use the fonts fails using the second approach.
    There is, of course, no change being made to the code in the item renderer which merely uses setStyle() to effect the row-by-row result.  The result in the second case is that the only style of the embedded font that renders is 'regular'.
    07.  I have used the 'keep-generated' facility to look at the code being generated by the mxmlc compiler and can see that different code is emitted, but it does not help me find a fix to the problem.  Both forms of the meta-tag do something; both methods of embedding seem to correctly register themselves with the FontManager, but only the method of embedding which actually performs the transcoding during compilation seems to result in a set of registered fronts which can be found and correctly used to render output based on the runtime setting of the font style.

    Thank for the reply
    I hoped that my posting indicated how the fonts in the the .swf file were constructed.  The "-4", argument to the command-line tool, fontswf, as far as I can tell, is the precise analog to the "embedAsCFF" argument in the [Embed] syntax.  That is what makes it so perplexing.  Given all the external documentation that is available for each tool/methodology, I would have thought that the resultant bytecodes, classes, flags, whatever, would have been identical.  The only difference would be the timing of when the transcoding took place.
    Since it is clearly more efficient to only transcode whatever set of fonts an application needs once, not once per build/test turn-around, I would really like to make the fontswf workflow work.  For those of us outside the beneficial environment of your licensed tools, the kindly-provided alternative to the facilities built into Flash Professional and/or Flash Builder give us the greatest degree of productivity.
    Whoever has access to the source code for Font [I can only see the uninteresting FontAsset in the SDK] can probably determine what difference might result from mxmlc working with this intermediate output, when inline transcoding is 'tagged':
    package
    import mx.core.FontAsset;
    [ExcludeClass]
    [Embed(fontName="ArnoPro_IT_4", _resolvedSource="C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", fontStyle="italic", _line="1189", _pathsep="true", embedAsCFF="true", fontWeight="normal", unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac", source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", _column="2", exportSymbol="AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4", _file="G:/FP/AIRZoom/src/AIRZoom_AS.as", mimeType="application/x-font")]
    public class AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4 extends mx.core.FontAsset
        public function AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4()
            super();
    versus this, when swf extraction is 'tagged':
    package
    import mx.core.FontAsset;
    [ExcludeClass]
    [Embed(fontName="ArnoPro_IT_4", _resolvedSource="C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", fontStyle="italic", _line="1191", _pathsep="true", embedAsCFF="true", fontWeight="normal", unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac", source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", _column="2", exportSymbol="AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4", _file="G:/FP/AIRZoom/src/AIRZoom_AS.as", mimeType="application/x-font")]
    public class AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4 extends mx.core.FontAsset
        public function AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4()
            super();
    The only difference is that value for '_line' which probably only indicates that one of the two processes has a comment or empty line somewhere.

  • OTF/PS fonts have recently stopped rendering in Flash Pro CS3 on Windows 7/64

    Recently, a number of my OTF/PS fonts have stopped rendering when used in Flash Pro CS3. The fonts appear in the fonts menu, render properly in the font preview popup in the font menu, but the fonts fail to render on stage when used, with certain exceptions:
    --If Bitmap Text is selected, the fonts appear (but aliased)
    --If Anti-alias for animation is selected, then the text appears when text insertion is active in the text box, but vanishes when focus shifts to another element, tool, selection
    In all other cases and for all other settings (yes, including black text with 100% alpha on a white background, etc etc), the text shows solely as transparent. You can select the text (although not see what you're selecting), cut and paste, and as you change the font size, kerning, justification, bold, italic, etc, the text boxes resize as normally expected; simply, the text does not show up.
    The fonts work normally in all other CS3 and Windows applications, and up until about last week (Dec 12 or so), used to work fine in Flash.
    The problem fonts appear to be (primarily Open Type Format) Post Script Outline fonts.
    I have installed all Windows updates, Flash Pro CS3 updates, deleted the Flash user config files, deleted and reinstalled the fonts, and copied the fonts to the C:/user/Program Files/Common/Adobe/Fonts folder.
    There were no new installations (applications, fonts, etc) around the time when the error started showing up, aside from possibly Windows updates.
    Given the timing (worked fine Tuesday, failed on Wednesday), I believe a Windows update may have been at least partially responsible, though perhaps it's the Mayan apocalypse.

  • Changing font to a custom font - styleddocument

    hello
    i've been trying to change the font in a styleddocument to a custom one that is not registered on the pc
    (i'm trying to make an application that holds the fonts in a folder, so that they can be dynamically loaded when needed)
    until now nothing worked
    i've tried 2 ways atm:
            JTextPane background = new JTextPane();
            StyledDocument styledDoc = background.getStyledDocument();
            if (styledDoc instanceof AbstractDocument) {
                doc = (AbstractDocument)styledDoc;
            } else {
                System.err.println("Text pane's document isn't an AbstractDocument!");
            initAttributes();
            background.setBackground(Color.BLACK);
            background.setEditable(false);
            File file = new File("fonts/mCode15.ttf");
         FileInputStream fis = null;
            Font font = null;
            try {
                fis = new FileInputStream(file);
                font = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT, fis);
            } catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
                Logger.getLogger(MatrixWindow.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
            } catch (FontFormatException ex) {
                Logger.getLogger(MatrixWindow.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
            } catch (IOException ex) {
                Logger.getLogger(MatrixWindow.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
            background.setFont(font);    // FAILS
            SimpleAttributeSet attrs = new SimpleAttributeSet();
            StyleConstants.setFontSize(attrs, 12);
            StyleConstants.setBold(attrs, true);
            StyleConstants.setForeground(attrs, Color.WHITE);
            StyleConstants.setFontFamily(font.getFontFamily);      // FAILSdoes anybody know any working solution for CUSTOM fonts?

    You should override public Font getFont(AttributeSet attr) method to return proper font with attributes.
    See how it works in src of DefaultStyledDocument class.

  • Symbol-like fonts unusable

    ...carried over from Security Update forum:
    The system's text management is in a mess. I believe this has happened since the last Security Update, and so do most other users that also experience this font problem.
    Symbol-like fonts do not work anymore in many modern applications. Try for example using the Symbol, Zapf Dingbats or Hoefler Text Ornaments-fonts in TextEdit, or Pages, or Keynote. On my machine, and others, the system is unable to render these fonts and instead uses another type style.
    The font-selector panel is also behaving erratically when trying to access these fonts. Selections spontaneously deselect, change into other fonts, etc.
    FontBook on the other hand, renders all fonts fine. So do more antique, or poorly programmed, applications like the apps in the Adobe suite. I guess in this rare case we can be happy for that.
    The fonts that are affected all seem to have in common that they render so called "special characters" (symbol-like characters), rather than letter-like. This leads me to believe the bug is related to Unicode management.
    Any ideas, solutions...?

    Selecting a few letters in a TextEdit document and
    then choosing f.ex. the "Apple Symbols" font fails to
    change the font of the text correctly. Actually, it
    will change the text into "Lucida Grande",
    independently of what it was before.
    That is how it is supposed to work. You cannot enter symbols in a Unicode OS and app by just changing the font and typing. That's what the article explains.
    If you insert a symbol-like character with the
    CharPal (f.ex. a greek phi) into the text, and then
    continue typing after that insertion point you'll be
    spontaneously switched into another non-symbol font.
    Same thing. If you want to continue to enter greek, you must either activate the Greek keyboard layout in System Prefs/International/Input menu or continue using the Character Palette.

Drop one "the" and the plural of fox is foxes, but the plural of dog is dogs saving one "e".  There are other, shorter versions, but the torture factor goes way up - I think one version features latin - and they're not based on the common phrase.
