Font substitution when Embedding fonts

The font embedding controls in FFCore's Optimize component include the ability to upload and select a Font Substitution Configuration File: To recap the documentation:The Font Substitution Configuration File option defines the pdfToolbox configuration file that will be used when embedding fonts. This configuration file controls font substitution behavior in Optimize. Fonts are embedded as subsets. Fonts are not embedded if they have a flag indicating that embedding is not allowed. The Embed missing fonts fixup in pdfToolbox Desktop preflight profiles includes an option to select a Font substitution policy:   If you select the Open folder with configuration files you will see the text files that control font substitution. Although pdfToolbox Desktop comes with 3 predefined font substitution policies, additional ones can be created by duplicating an existing policy file and editing it (you will have to restart acrobat to see the changes).  The prefix on the filname controls the display order of the font policies within pdfToolbox. I would also ensure there are no spaces in any new filenames. The font substitution policies are plain text files with the following content: DisplayName 1 My Special Name SubstituteAll<tab>Arial<tab>Helvetica<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Futura<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Microsoft Sans Serif<tab>MS PGothic<tab>Trebuchet MS<tab>Verdana
SubstituteFirst<tab>Arial Bold<tab>Arial-Bold<tab>Helvetica Bold<tab>Futura-Bold<tab>Futura Bold<tab>Helvetica-Bold
The DisplayName defines the name that will appear in the pdfToolbox UI: The remaining lines specify which fonts may be substituted by which fonts and the precedence for substitution.SubstituteAll - all fonts in the list are substituted for each other. When a font is missing pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font.SubstituteFirst - only the first font in the list is substituted. pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font. Note: the font names must match what pdfToolbox will find. The best way to ascertain that is to run a preflight on the file and copy the names off the report.  UPDATE - Updated example text to show location of tabs

I added a new topic to the forum covering font substitution: http://forum.support.xerox.com/t5/FreeFlow-Core/Font-substitution-when-Embedding-fonts/td-p/177411

  • Avoid "Embedded Subset" in PDF when embedding fonts

Hi,  I am preparing documents according to a requirement for which "When embedding fonts, all characters for the font should be embedded, not just a subset of the fonts being used in the document."
When creating the document with Acrobat 6 (or Acrobat XI) even if  'Adobe PDF Settings' include specifications
    - Embed all fonts: checked
    - Subset embedded fonts when ...: unchecked
    - List of Fonts to never Embed: null
    (Compatibility: Acrobat 5.0, version 1.4)
the result is that the produced PDF includes all fonts with the specification '(Embedded Subset)'.
How to configure 'Adobe PDF Settings' from Word so that in all cases the 'full' font is embedded?

    Hi,
thank you for your answer! I am still puzzled though.
It sounds strange that an option is included in 'Adobe PDF Settings'
    - Subset embedded fonts when ...: unchecked
and this is not executed when the PDF is created.
According to your experience "certain types of fonts can only be embedded as subsets". Is there a list of the fonts that are not embedded as full font?
I have read that "Some fonts have a 'do not embed' flag which is a copyright restriction from the vendor of the font".
Can this be the reason for "subset embedding" instead of "full" font embedding?
Many thanks in advance for any other feedback,
also concerning actual enforcement of the requirement for full font embedding (by the FDA),
    Armando

  • Is there any way to enable editing when embedded in a browser?

When I embed Acrobat Pro in the browser it seems to run in a limited mode that prevents most document editing.  It works fine when I access the document directly.
Is there any way I can enable full editing in Acrobat pro when it is browser-embedded?
Here's how it looks normally (excuse my choice of pdf)
When embedded it loses its menus, it loses the Tools link in the top right, and most items in the Comment functions.
It doubtless looses a lot more too.
My preference would be to have a simple (browser-side) call I could make to re-enable all these functions.
Note, I cannot add javascript to the pdfs.  I can only act in the browser.
I'm starting to suspect I'll have to write a plugin, but I'd really rather avoid doing that if I can.  It's been years since I've had to seriously develop in C++, and one glance at it reminds me the headache it can be.
For reference, browser embedded is key to my architecture, as the document will be being presented with a lot of ancillary information around it, and will need to save to a web-site, not to locally.
(If anyone has any experience with writing a save-back-to-a-website script I'd love to know how that can be done too.)

The plug-in has a limited number of features from the full product that are appropriate for web browsing, that is, viewing, filling in, printing,  and submitting data to a scripted web page. Since the vast majority of users cannot save the downloaded file back to the Web server this feature was not included because one is "browsing" not creating nor editing.
Now if one is using a special web server like Microsoft's SahrePoint server it is possible to integrate the full Acrobat product to check out, lock form editing by others, for editing and then saving back to the SharePoint server and remove the lock. The reason for locking the file being edited is to prevent conflicts in the edited versions, sort of like locking Word or Excel files on a network server.
You might want to consider all the issues involved in editing networked files which could be changed by multiple users at any time and the needs of the users to have some control over the changes.
Do not over think this. You are using a "Browser" which only browses.

  • PDF form submission problem - works in Acrobat and Reader, but not when embedded in browser

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to submit a PDF form to an application server.
To do this, I added a "Submit" button to the PDF, configured the server's address and submit format, and tested the button.
I opened the PDF in Acrobat Pro, clicked the button, and my web application received the form in PDF format just as I wanted.
To make it work in Reader, I had to extend user rights via Acrobat Pro, and then the form worked inside Reader as well.
Up to here, everything went fine.
Then I embedded the PDF in a web page (which will be the final scenario) and it all stopped working.
The submit button doesn't do anything anymore, and no data is sent to the application server.
I even tried switching from the form's submit mechanism to calling event.target.submitForm(...) in Javascript directly, but nothing changed (meaning this too worked only when opening the form as an "offline" pdf, but not when embedding it in a web page).
Is there something I am missing? Something else that must be configured/activated in order to be able to submit the PDF when it is in the form of an embedded object?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Alex

    Thanks for your reply, Paul.
I tested the submit button both in Reader 9.3 and Acrobat 8 (which is the same I used to RE the PDF).
Apparently I got it working too, but only by deploying my embedding web page to an application server.
The final environment the PDF will be embedded into will be inside a web application deployed to an application server, so I guess my problem is solved.
It didn't work only when embedded into a local test.html web page saved on my PC...
Thanks again, have a good day.

  • Strange behaviour when embedding HTML page in Air

    Hi,
I'm trying to embedd a HTML page to a Air application.
The HTML page has a simple Flex application (TestFlex4Project.mxml) with a button that changes one HTML element on the web page (TestFlex4Project.html) using ExternalInterface. If I run the Flex application using the HTML page it works just fine and when I click the button the HTML ellement is changed and the mouseover- and onclick events works. If I embedd the HTML page in an Air application the mouseover- and onclick events does not work any more. Why?
If I use Aternative 1 in the HTML code (instead of using Aternative 2 in the HTML code where I'm editing the innerHTML property) the mouseover- and onclick events works when the HTML page is embeded in Air. Why?
Even more strange is that if I remove the line [<img src="http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif" alt="Get Adobe Flash player" />] from the HTML page the Flex application dose not show at all when embedded in Air. Why?
You can try the online sample here and the files here.
    The application looks like this:
And if you click the button and click the upper most text you will recieve a message like this:

  • Flash ComboBox only showing 2 rows when embedded in Connect

We've built an AS2 application that can be embedded into various LMSs, etc.
Curiously, when embedded in Adobe Connect, the ComboBoxes aren't rendered correctly.  Rather than dropping down, the menus are displaying above the widget, even though there is plenty of room below.  Even worse, only the first two rows are displayed, so to select any other rows you have to use the arrow keys.
My guess is that the ComboBox is trying to determine how much room it has to render its menus, and that this is going awry.
    _lockRoot is set to true
I think this might be handled by the PopUpManager, perhaps by its setSize function, but I can't figure out where this is defined.  It's simply listed as a property:
         var setSize:Function;
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Hello Chris and Sameer,
thank you for getting back on this issue.
    To answer your questions first:
    - no, I have not posted this issue in the connect forums - I will do and point to this discussion
    - Sameer, I have tested the webcam on the website you pointed out, it is not working with Firefox but it is working in Chrome
I also need to give you an update on the current versions I use:
Win 7 Pro (64bit) (all updates included)
    Firefox 21.0
    IE 10.0.9200.16576
    Chrome  26.0.1410.64 m
    Flash Player 11.7.700.202
    Adobe Connect Addin 11.2 r261
I tested the webcam via FP with Firefox, IE and Chrome in the versions mentioned above. Only in Chrome I can run the WebCam on the www.testwebcam.com website. Once I start the adobe connect meeting and want to start the webcam the Connect Addin stops working with the popup as shown in post 3 of this discussion in all three browsers.
All components have been uninstalled and installed again (except for IE)  for testing with no change in the result. I have also rolled back the computer to the system recovery point furthest back in time to see if any other installation might be the cause. But no luck either.
I am happy to post the logs but would need advise where to find these or how to retrieve.
    Thanks!

  • Error popping up when embedded

    Hi,
I've got a minor but frustrating problem: When embedding the results in HTML on my website, visitors always get the pop-up which says (in Dutch): "De opdrachten voor dit document zijn niet beschikbaar in het Engels (VS)" which means translated that the assignments for this document are not available in English.
What does this mean and how can I avoided this? "Sluiten", equal to close, should be pressed to close the pop-up and show the results.
    Thanks..
    Kind regards,
    Barry

    Hi,
Please provide the link to your HTML page, or you can email to [email protected]
Do you know what locale your visitors are in, where are they viewing your page?
    Thanks,
    Lucia

  • "Movie not loaded" when embedded in HTML.

I am new to flash programming and am trying to teach myself actionscript. So far I have been unable to get my program to run when embedded on my website. It works perfectly when I run the swf on my own hard drive, but when embedded it simply shows a white square. Right-clicking brings up a menu with a greyed out "movie not loaded" and "about flash player 10". Do I need to change the compiler settings somehow? Or do I need to change something on my website? So far I've just been compiling it by dragging the .mxml file onto the mxmlc.exe program.
Searching google has revealed a ton of people with similar issues, but no clear solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem resolved. Apparently the swf I was using was bad. After replacing it with a backup copy, it works.

  • IOS Debug error when embedding non-CFF fonts

We have a project where we are embedding fonts for some button skins as per Jason's blog (http://blogs.adobe.com/jasonsj/2011/08/embedding-fonts-in-flex-mobile-projects.html) - our skin uses StyleableTextFields for the label.
When we debug on the iPad we get an error that seems to be occurring when one of the buttons with the embedded font skin is being initialized.  (Debugger stops on UIComponent.as line 7485)
    This is the output:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

We then reverted the button skins  back to one that we use for a web app the debugging runs fine - the web skin uses a embedded font where CFF is set to true.
Is this possibly a bug with the SDK, debugging or something we aren't quite setting correctly?
Any infomation or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I've now tried with the beta version AIR 3.9.0.880 in the new IOS 7, and this problem is still happening, unfortunately.
My app compiled with -ipa-test-interpreter installs fine but with -ipa-debug-interpreter it doesn't install at all.
The IPA is generated successfully but iTunes refuses to install it.
I've filed a bug here. If you're experiencing the same problem, please leave a vote here:

  • Character missing when embedding font

I have a movie in wich text is loaded dynamically. I load the
fonts from an use a swf in wich the font is embedded and import
that into the main movie. The text is loaded based on language
    choice.
But now i come to the hungary this one character: "ő"
    doesn't show up.
So i recreated the font swf to include this character but it
still doesn't work. This character is still missing. It's driving
    me crazy...
I found out that it might have to do with the loaded language
and settings from the OS. But i am not shure what to do exactly.
Can anyone help me out please...
YOur help is very much appreciated

Sorry respondplease , thanks for you response but that was
    not my problem.
I already had the font embedded and linked. It was just that
i couldn't get this one character into the flash movie.
Finally i succeeded by installing support for certain
languages, and then setting the language of my machine to this
    language and reboot(!)
Then after the reboot launch flash and publish the font movie
again. That did the trick. I have the font loaded in a sepperate
    fontfile/movie (swfmovie).
It has to do with the system only loading the first 250
characters or so from a font The character i needed was out of this
    range

  • Issues when embedding several subtitles languages in one file - bug?

    Dear people
I have added subtitles to a couple of shorts ripped from DVDs and embedded the .srt (sometimes one, sometimes several) using Subler into the m4v.
    The results are:
    * I can select all the subtitles in iTunes on my Mac, as expected
    * on the iPad I can't select subtitles at all (if there are more than one), and I just can see the last selected language I've used in iTunes
Is this a known bug? or a feature? or there is anything I can do?

    CA Forum: Exporting
Hi synapsevampire, thanks for replying.   synapsevampire:- Even though i've used Tahoma size 11 fonts, when i open the document in MSWord 2000, they have a size of 10.5.
Same here, I changed it to a Tahoma 11.5 and it results in size 11... Well, i guess it's a bug then. I hope something will be done about it before i have to change all of my reports...     synapsevampire:  So i guess it's a bug then. I hope it gets corrected before i have to change all reports...
    - In the exported file, the "line spacing" setting i have set to "exact 16" is ignored and set to the default "single spacing". This happened in CR 8.5 too.
No surprise there, as those are settings within Crystal, not Word. Very few programatic features are exported to any other format, it just emulates them. I wonder why is that. It shouldn't be that difficult to pass these settings to word. Anyway...  synapsevampire:
    - Moving textboxes around from one page to another and then saving and reoppening, sometimes causes MSWord to delete all text from the document. I cannot be sure if this is an issue of MSWord or CR XI but i'm reporting it just in case...
Ummm, moving textboxes while in Word you mean? That would be a Word issue. I thought of that too, that's why i tried out the Editable RTF format which was a major dissapointment with the way it handles (or rather does not handle) paragraphs. I really hope something can be done about it because it's a very convenient format, for me at least.

  • Error-Receiver File Adapter using Variable substitution when file is empty

    XI Experts,
We are on PI 7.0, SP14.
We are using variable subtitution to get the filename from source message. This works fine as long as we have data in the payload for filename element. But we have a scenario where we don't have to create file when certain condition does not exists in source message so in the message payload filename element will not exists in such condition and file will be empty and we should not create file.
Parameter in the communication channel for Handling empty message is "Ignore".
Does anyone knows how to handle this scneario. We don't want to default any file name in the message mapping if source file name element does not exists.
We are following getting error in the Adapter engine.
MP: Exception caught with cause com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.RecoverableException: Error during variable substitution: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.varsubst.VariableDataSourceException: The following variable was not found in the message payload: file: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.configuration.DynamicConfigurationException: Error during variable substitution: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.varsubst.VariableDataSourceException: The following variable was not found in the message payload: file
    Thanks
    MP

You can implement this by writing the module to throw an exception or whatever method you want to execute.
If you don't want to receive an error message then module is suitable for you.

However when the applet is embedded in a jsp page the image JButtons don't appear at all. >That is probably because of security. Add 10 Dukes to the thread to indicate you are serious about resolving this, and I might expand on that answer.

  • Trouble when embedding a Bean in an Office Document

    Hello all,
I have to embed a Java Bean into an ActiveX Container like a MS Office document via the axbridge.
Let me mention, what I have (successfully) done so far:
    - Create a Java Bean
    - Create a Jar file (incl. the manifest file)
    - Run the packager and register the Object
    - Test the control in the MS ActiveX Control Test Container
    System: Win2k, JSDK 1.4.2, JRE 1.4.2_03, Office 2000, Visual C++ 6.0 SP 3
The ActiveX control works fine in the MS test container. When I try to embed it in another Container like a MS Office document or Macromedia Authoware, the Container Program hangs up without an error message. Also the Java Console contains no message.
On the other side, the Control can successfully be created and used within VBA:
    Sub myTestApplet()
        Set myTest = CreateObject("TestApplet.Bean.1")

        Set myTest = Nothing
End Sub Doing so, the control works correctly, but isnt displayed in the document.
I tried to use different Superclasses for the Bean like Component, JComponent, Panel etc. and at last I used an empty Bean inherited from JComponent. Every try works well in the MS test container, but as soon as I try to embed it into an Office-Document the Application hangs up.
The ActiveX Bridge from the 1.4.2 SDK/JRE Bundle doesnt work at all, even not in the MS test container. Thus I installed the 1.4.2_03 JRE, which makes the controls work in the MS test container (but still not in other Containers).
Can somebody help me? I have no idea for a workaround and Im blocked now. Any advice is very welcome!
    Regards,
    Oliver

Thank you very much for your interest at my problem.
I try to describe exactly, what I do: I want to integrate a Java3D program into a Macromedia Authorware application. Therefore I want to convert the Java3D program into an ActiveX control (and use the ActiveX Bridge). Authorware must be able to access methods of the J3D program and the J3D program must be able to throw events to Authorware. I think this is nothing special for an ActiveX control.
In order to avoid additional problems, I use a simple test application without Java3D (source code enclosed).
    I work on:
    WindowsXP,
    JSDK 1.4.2, JRE 1.4.2_3,
Visual C++ 6.0 SP3 and I also tried Visual Studio .NET.
    Authorware 7
    MS Office 2000
What have I done so far?
    - compiled the code and created a jar archive (manifest file enclosed)
    - packaged and registered the Bean as described in http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/beans/axbridge/developerguide/index.html
    - successfully tested the ActiveX control in the ActiveX Control Test Container. The exported methods appear (and work) correctly when I choose "invoke methods".
Now to the problem(s): If I try to embed the control in Authorware or an office document via the ToolBox, the container program hangs up. But as already mentioned above, Visual Basic .NET embeds the control successfully. Therefore I try to create an ActiveX control in VB .NET, which integrates my Java Bean. Let's say a wrapper control. Here are the steps:
    - I opened Visual Studio .NET and created a new VB project based on template "Windows Application".
    - added the Bean to the ToolBox
    - added the Bean into the VB Form.
    - added a button into the form. The form designer created the Bean and button as:Friend WithEvents AxActiveXTest1 As AxActiveXTest.AxActiveXTest
    Friend WithEvents Button1 As System.Windows.Forms.Button
    Me.AxActiveXTest1 = New AxActiveXTest.AxActiveXTest()
Me.Button1 = New System.Windows.Forms.Button() - in the form designer double clicked the button and entered the following code: Private Sub Button1_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        Me.AxActiveXTest1.appendText("Hello World")
End Sub- test the form and click on the VB button.
Now the error message listed above appears ("cannot invoke method 'appendText' at this time"). I have no idea, why VB crashes when I try to access a method of the Bean. Somewhere I must have made an error. Each assistance is very welcome.
Thank you in advance and please excuse my less good English.
