Fonts when creating eBooks

Not sure if this is the right place, but I can't really find any other forum...
I'm trying to create an eBook for Amazon and I can't work out how to keep the fonts from my original. I'm starting with an rtf file, which I export as html. In html all the fonts are fine - right size, and I use serif and sans serif (I don't really care which are eventually used, but for the record I use Baskerville and Verdana).
However, when I convert to an eBook using Amazon's KindleGen, the font sizes and styles are lost. The only thing I don't seem to lose are the italics.
Any suggestions? The problem is, apart from KindleGen, I can't find an eBook creation software for Mac. Amazon recommends MobiPocket Creator, but it's PC only.

For other software, take a look at this list - it's a little old, and it's focused on the 'ePub' format (used by Nook, iBook, Sony Readers, etc. - just about everything except Kindle). Still some of this software will export or convert to the Kindle or "mobi" format:
http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_create_epub
I recommend starting with Calibre.
And I'm not  familiar with the Kindle ebook format, but I know that with the ePub format you need to include the font file in the epub package and reference it correctly in the CSS file (ePub format is basically just a packaged web site, so if you know web design that will make sense).
You'll probably get better advice at the www.mobileread.com forums.

Is it possible to add additional fonts when creating an iPhoto book?
I have some additional fonts that would add a lot to the overall appearance of my i Photo book but cannot find a method for installing them into iPhoto.
    Thanks for your assistance.

Use the Edit ➙ Shot Fonts menu option to bring up the Fost selection pane.
From there you can select any font you have installed on your Mac.

  • How do I select and format fonts when creating a web Journal in Aperture?

I am creating a web journal in Aperture 3.5.1.  There is a not very functional way to create text boxes and add text interspersed with images.
I can open the font window, but highlighting text and formatting it in the font window has no effect.
In addition, the size of the font actually changes from paragraph to paragraph for no apparent reason.

There is a picture in picture function in iMovie'09 - but very basic and
to move around in a photo You got the "Ken-Burns effect".
Still to do this with 100% control there are only two good alternatives

  • How can I change the font when creating an e-mail in Outlook's web-mail mode?

I am new to Firefox. When I go to a web-mail server, I can click on sending a new message. While there, I cannot find any way to change the font, font size, or color of the text. All of these options were available in a toolbar at the top of the message window when I am using Internet Explorer 9 or IE8. I have looked through all of the help files provided by Firefox, and found nothing about changing fonts, etc.
    Thanks for trying to help

    Hi Jaime,
Are you saying, you are getting junk characters in the email attachment? Then pls check the following. Since you want to send Japanese fonts, please pass language 'J' in both  objpack-obj_langu = '3' & doc_chng-obj_langu  = '3' instead of '3' please replace it with 'J'.
Another thing which you may have to check is the SCOT device type. As I understand from my basis colleague, this may also affect your attachment fonts since the emails are sent through SCOT. Go to transaction SCOT-> Settings-> Device types for format conversion. Check whether wrong device type is defined for Japanese there. Hope this helps

  • Font color wont change when creating a proof book

I have never had any problems changing the font color when creating my proof books and all the sudden I can only get black text. Can anyone help I am in the middle of designing a baby book and
the design calls for pink and grey text not black.. If I am not mistaken I think I just did an update a week are so ago when the trouble began. Thanks Wezzy

    The photos is the book tray are sorted by date.  So to get them in the order you want you need to do this;
1 - group them in an album and manually sort in the order you want.
2 - select all and go to the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option.
3 - select a 1 minute time differential between photos and click OK.
4- add the photos to a book and they will be in the order you need.

  • Can I use Adobe fonts to create my eBook?

I want to create an eBook using a propriatory authoring tool and I want to use the Adobe fonts that I have bought.
Although it looks like the licence for the fonts I have does allow ebedded print & preview, this post http://forums.adobe.com/message/5199255#5199255 suggests that if my book isn't in one of the formats listed I'm not allowed to use those fonts in the eBook. I have just spent 45 frustrating minutes with the Call Centre failing to get an answer to this - does anyone know if I can use these fonts?
The eBook produced will sit in a container app that has full DRM - no one will be able to grab the code. The format is similar to ePub2 but with customisations.
Any help is VERY much appreciated.

You'll need to ask the folks at Yahoo but if I had to guess, I would say you cannot. They probably have their own proprietary system to build their websites.

  • Error message: Helvetica Medium outline font missing when creating PDF's

Error message: Helvetica Medium outline font missing when creating PDF's. Where can I downlaod it and why is it suddenly happening?

    OS? Version of ID?
This means that either you have an extra Helvetica Medium font installed and it's interfering with ID finding the T1 version, or the T1 version is damaged. I found this really old thread that explains it fairly well: http://www.asadesigner.com/22-indesign/2d812de56777cc90.htm
The good news is that it's probably only affecting the page information marks.

I have created a book in ibooks author with a custom font when previewing on the ipad the special characters within the font do not appear?

'custom' font sounds like you may be working with a font that is unsupported on iOS/iPad.
Supported fonts are found in the pull-down font menu in the toolbar. Authors are obligated (mostly) to stick to that list.

  • Can I create a PDF with embedded Postscript Type 1 fonts when ordering?

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional version and can set up a Postscript file to be distilled with the proper settings for print. I often do this for professional printers. Are there settings available for book orders, and if so, can I send my own PDF through the iPhoto application somehow? The books need to have a "Prairie/Arts & Crafts" look, and they look much better using some of Postscript fonts I have than anything that came with the system.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPhoto 6

    Anna;
Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Need help with basic steps in creating ebook

I have a confession: I constantly use workarounds instead of stopping and learning the proper way of using Indesign to create ebooks. I wouldn't say I do it because I'm lazy, but rather because I'm simply inept lol. These are some of the basic steps I take:
    1. create new document: include master text frame (because I want page numbers to show)
    2. paste unformatted text into document
    3. adjust size of master frame to give text suitable margins (since its an ebook, right/left margins same on opposing pages.)
    4. highlight all text, adjust before- and after-paragraph spacing to half of the character leading (so bottom of text is at same point for each page)
    5. go to chapter titles; do page-break so title has its own page; highlight title, choose font, size; create new character style; apply style to other chapter titles (is it possible to create a ctrl + number shortcut to apply character styles?). Notice I didn't create a character style for body text. Should I do that first?
    6. insert page number markers on both master pages, then cover page number with white box on first page of chapters.
    7. drop pictures into textbox so that if more text is added, pictures move with the text.
That's basically what I do when I create an ebook. Any suggestions as to better/proper way to do these things would be very appreciated.

    1. Master text frames have nothing to do with page numbers and in most cases are totally unnecessary. Set the margins appropriately and place your text.
    2. Without knowing what you're starting with it's impossible to tell if that's a good idea or not. My gut says is it's not. See number 1.
    3. See number 1.
    4. This is what paragraph styles are for.
    5. See number 4.
    6. This is what multiple master pages are for. Stop doing that.
    7. Well, you finally got one right. As my people would say...mazel tov.
Now, it's time for you stop being inept (your word, not mine) and start learning the right way to do this. First thing you do is buy Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide. It's the best InDesign book on the market for beginners. http://amzn.to/plsvxy
Secondly, check out the video training on Lynda.com. This link will get you a free one week trial: http://bit.ly/fcGpiI

  • How to change the default save encoding of the dvm files when create dvm???

When I creating a DVM(domain-value mapping) in Chinese on the ESB control and confirm it, then restarted the SOA service, the DVM that I created in Chinese disappeared from ESB control. All the maps(both English and Chinese ) are in DVM Repository.
After I updated the encoding from ‘UTF-8’ to ‘GB2312’ in the three files below, and restarted the SOA service, the DVM in Chinese appeared on ESB control.
But when I adding the second row in Chinese and save it, then restart the SOA service, the DVM in Chinese disappeared from ESB Control once again. Because the encoding in the three files below is updated from ‘GB2312’ to ‘UTF-8’ .
    Files:
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\metadata\files\dvm.def.xml
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\metadata\files\dvm\Chinese.xml.def.xml
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\content\files\dvm\Chinese.xml_1.0
How to change the default save encoding of the dvm files when create dvm in ESB control ???

I have the same problem.  When I updated to Mavericks now the bookmarks bar font is huge.  I liked it the way it was before.  I liked the smaller font.  Also wish I could change the color of the sidebar and font/folders too.
I tried to see in preferences if there was anyway to change it, but I don't see anything there.

  • InDesign CC no longer packages fonts when I need to send a project to the printer

Hey Adobe team: Long-time user from when Photoshop was but a sprout. I recently upgraded from Creative Suite 6 to Creative Cloud and have run into a troubling problem. InDesign CC no longer packages fonts when I need to send a project to the printer. This meant that I had to completely redo a project on deadline for a problem that I’ve never had before. How is this possibly helping your users? And is there a solution in the works or do I need to cancel Creative Cloud and go back to CS6?

    @OurPlace
First of all, you are not addressing any Adobe team. These forums are primarily supported by volunteers who are not Adobe employees and don't officially represent Adobe Technical Support.
    That having been said ...
There was nothing done specifically with InDesign 9 or 10 (the CC and CC 2014) versions of InDesign to change or disable packaging of fonts when packaging a document. It should be absolutely no different from InDesign 8 (the CS6 version).
    Troubleshooting hints:
    (1)     Make sure you check the Copy Fonts (Except CJK and TypeKit) option in the package dialog.
    (2)     Make sure that you are not using any CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) complex fonts that we specifically will never put into a package.
    (3)     TypeKit fonts won't package.
    (4)     Make sure that your file system permissions are such that InDesign can create all the necessary directories and subdirectories for the packaging operation.
    (5)     If on MacOS, exit InDesign and try forcing a clearing of your system font cache and then reboot.
    (6)     Exit InDesign and then find and delete all files on your system with filenames of the form AdobeFnt##.lst where ## is a two digit number; don't delete any other files that start with AdobeFnt. Then reboot and restart InDesign.
    (7)     Reset InDesign's preferences that may have become corrupted. For Windows, start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. For MacOS, while pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
One of these should either address or resolve your problem. Again, we at Adobe are not aware of any generic issue with packing fonts with InDesign.

  • Put logo in ABAP list/smallest font when sending to spool

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement. I did a ABAP list, not ALV, classic one, I also send it to spool and then convert to pdf and download to pc.
Now our customer wants a logo for it, also as the report is long, when print it or downloading it to pdf, some of parts are missing. So they say that can't we take it in smallest fonts??
So is it possible to place logo for a classic ABAP list and is it possible to send it in smallest fonts when sending to spool or downloading to pdf??
I will be pleased for your replies.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
ABAP lists are simple reports with just rows and columns with text only. it is not possible to put a graphic into an ABAP list. For graphics, you need to use a sapscript form or smartform to create the spool.

  • Corrupt image formatting when creating pdf from embedded visio image in MS word

Hello, Using Adobe Acrobat 9 standard and trying to create a PDF file from an MS word (version 2003) document.  PDF file created is fine except for an image (embedded visio diagram imported into word).  When created in PDF, the image is missing many of the diagram labels, and other text boxes are in the wrong font and wrong location.  I don't know if it's my Adobe Acrobat or MS Word settings that need to be updated.
    thanks, NB

    Dear fellows,
the problem is still present.  My system:Windows 7 32-Bit Prof, MS Office 2010 Prof, Acrobat X Pro 10.1.1, Vision 2010 Prof, all updates installed.
Problem #1: Even the latest Acrobat X 10.1.1 version causes Visio 2010 to start with error messages, origin: the Acrobat Add-In.  Therefore I de-activated the Acrobat Add-In, again, as in the past.
As I design grafics with Visio 2010, I mark them in the active Visio window, copy the marked parts and then insert them into my Word-Document.  So far, so good and as I want it.
The (still present) problem: I can produce a PDF file using the "save as Adobe PDF", but the Visio drawing is incomplete and corrupt.  E.g. arrows as line endings have disappeared.
PS: But using Adobes PDF printer sets the embedded Visio drawing correctly!  But using the printer one looses some features of the "save as Adobe PDF" command.
    Well, probably one day ...
    Regards,
    Rückenlehne.
