Footnotes and XML: import and export.

I've been playing around with ID CS4 for a week or two now, and can't seem to figure out a way to get footnotes into, or out of, an InDesign document using the XML import / export feature in the Structure pane. It seems you can't tag footnote text, which precludes it ever being "structured". I did notice the footnote is available when exporting as IDML, however.
Is there a way to manipulate footnotes from the document's structure / xml tree? I am working with DocBook sources, and need to find out a way to get footnotes marked up correctly in InDesign... this is proving to be a bit of an issue. Any help or reference pointers would be greatly appreciated.

well, this is what i've discovered so far
indesign footnotes don't live on the xml tree, so there's no way for them to be "tagged" as a footnote on import. from what i can tell, the easiest way to "automatically" create footnotes from n xml import is using the indesign scripting system. there are a few pdfs inside the indesign application folder and some samples - these are also available on the adobe website.
using scripting, you can create an xpath query to iterate over your footnote elements, then create an indesign footnote object at the same point in the text, copy the contents from the footnote element into the indesign footnote, then remove the footnote from the xml tree. or maybe just plonk it in a text frame living on a hidden layer or something. i haven't gotten that far yet.
i haven't got as far as exporting yet, but i reckon there could be a similar trick available via scripting. another option would be IDML, which definitely has footnotes tucked away in its pckage somewhere.
does anybody else have a better solution, or more light to shed on the matter?

    for importing material,every importer has to file bill of entry in customs.
    first vendor send some documents like certificate of origine , bill of lading, packing list etc to importer.
    on the basis of those documents,importer makes supporting documents like duty calculation sheet, GATE declaration form,CHA declaration form,insurance certificate.
    CHA (custom house agent ) file the bill of entry on behalf of impoter in customs.
    custom verify it.
    after duty payment, CHA can clears the consignment from custom.
    there are two typs of BOE.
    1 Home consumption BOE
    2 Warehousing BOE
    in 1st type of BOE , payment of duty is done at the time of custom clearance
    and in 2nd type of BOE, importer can put material in warehouse without payment of duty. at time of using those material from warehouse,importer has to file out bond warehouse BOE and pay the all duties.

  • XML import and Export

    Hello,
    could someone help me with this issue?
    We had process chains in production, but not in development. We extracted the chain via XML and imported these in development.
    It seems that it has collected all objects related to this chain. We are now at the point that we decide to remove the XML import out of the development system.
    The question here is, what will happen if we do this?
    I hope someone has the answer for this.
    Kind regards,

  • FCP XML import and linking .r3d

    I have a sequence that was originally edited in FCP (7.0) using ProRes proxies created out of RedCine. I remember that in Premiere 5.5 when you imported the XML, premiere re-linked the original .r3d's with all the scale and position attributes.
    When I import the XML into Premiere CC it doesn't reconnect the .r3d files.
    Did something change with CC or is there something wrong with the XML?

    Thank you all for your help. It still leaves a bit of a workflow problem. <br /><br />Basically we have some people ingesting / organizing content and maintaining on a network share. Duplicating the media is slow and moving it all into one volume is not too good either as it breaks all the relationships for others. Re-linking is good, but doesn't work if the material is spread across subdirectories and giving a key to link all the media together looses some of the benefit of having the export from FCP in the first place, it's just as easy to re-make the edit.<br /><br />We are only using cut edits, so this is quite simple. For users on the Mac using FCP and handing off to Premier it works fine, the problem is we want to hand off to Windows Premier. It's ok to run a script over the files to change the XML naming of the <pathurl> which seems to be causing the problem, but how to describe this in the Windows world?<br /><br />Thanks for all the help.... anyone from Adobe with any ideas?<br /><br />The problem as I see it is how to identify Mac OS mounts to a Windows version of Premier on XML import.

  • I'm using Firefox with Ubuntu 11.04 and the Import and Backup-button cannot be found in the Library-window as instructed, how can I enable this particular feature on Ubuntu 11.04?

    The import and backup-button is, however, where it's supposed to be on Ubuntu 10.10.

    Ubuntu may have moved those three button as well to that control bar.

    I am using an older computer as a dual-boot machine, with XP Pro and Ubuntu 11.4 both running independently on it. On the Windows side, I have Firefox all set up with my bookmarks, which I restored from a backup made on my primary computer. On the Linux side, there is no button available to do this. I have looked up the Help for this, and followed the directions, but the "Library" pane simply does not have any buttons showing, where it should say "Organize, Views, Import and Backup". The buttons are completely missing.

    Hmm.. export/import only works between portal installations at the same version level. What you need to do is to use the upgrade scripts that will take you from Portal 3.0.7 to Portal 3.0.8, which are not available yet. We hope to make these scripts available in a couple of weeks on OTN. (Yes.. I too am waiting for these scripts).

  • Xsl:include and xml:import

    I want to use another stylesheet within the original one.
    the documentation just said how to declare an
    xsl:include or xsl:import element as top level, but no examples about how to call the imported or included stylesheet.
    I'll appreciate any examples you can provide to me .
    Thanks
    Chris

    I've done this, and the way i think about it is that each "imported" XSL document combines (or are appended) into the XSL document that imports the other XSL documents. As such, all of the template matching that is occuring has to be consistent with the way the XML tags are matching up with XSL templates.
    It is important that the templates in each imported XSL document will match up to the XML tags that the templates are designed to transform.
    In other words, if i have an employee list <emp>, and an XSL template matching the <emp> element, i can produce a transformation on the list itself. now, i can define a transformation for a child element of <emp> by "importing" the XSL document that defines the template match for the child element (for example, "emp/lastName" can be what the second XSL document matches on).
    Long story short, if you can paste the imported XSL into the importing XSL and things still work, then you can separate them out into multiple modular XSL files for inclusion.

  • Tagged text to footnotes after XML import

    Hi all,
    I am close, I have found a solution on StackOverflow. However, guys there did not provide the final solution when all footnotes remain properly styled. Now I have the script below. It does the work properly but the styling is lost. It is possible to find that it have to move the founded part, not use it like the java String. Some guy recommended to change fn.texts[0].insertionPoints[-1].contents = fnText; to move instead contents. Of course, he has probably meant something more complicated. Any help very appreciated!
    Application.prototype.main = function(){
    if ( this.documents.length <= 0 ) return;
    var tg = this.selection[0] || this.activeDocument;
    if( 'appliedFont' in tg ) tg = tg.parent;
    if( tg.constructor == TextFrame ){ tg = tg.parentStory ; }
    if(! ('findGrep' in tg) ) return;
    var fnPatterns = ["@FOOTNOTES_BEGIN@([\\s\\S]*?)@FOOTNOTES_END@", "@footnotes_begin@([\\s\\S]*?)@footnotes_end@"];
    var count = 0;
    for(patterCounter = 0; patterCounter < fnPatterns.length; patterCounter++){
        fnPattern = fnPatterns[patterCounter];
        var fnFinds = (function(){
            this.findGrepPreferences = this.changeGrepPreferences = null;
                this.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = fnPattern;
                var ret = tg.findGrep();
                this.findGrepPreferences = this.changeGrepPreferences = null;
            return ret;
        }).call(this);
        var fnFind, fnText, rg = new RegExp(fnPattern), ip, fnParent, fn, count;
        while( fnFind=fnFinds.pop() ){
            fnText = fnFind.contents.match(rg)[1];
            fnParent = fnFind.parent.getElements()[0];
            ip = fnFind.insertionPoints[0].index
            try {
                fnFind.remove();
                fn = fnParent.footnotes.add(LocationOptions.BEFORE, fnParent.insertionPoints[ip]);
                fn.texts[0].insertionPoints[-1].contents = fnText;
                ++count;
                catch(_){}
    alert((count)? (count+" footnote(s) successfully added."): "No footnote added. Make sure you use the relevant pattern.");
    app.doScript('app.main();', ScriptLanguage.javascript,
    undefined, UndoModes.entireScript, app.activeScript.displayName);

    I´m not sure if I understood correctly your case, but I do that kind of books with following method:
    1. In Word I use all main paragraph styles like you mentioned...
    2. I put a page brake at end of every unit, so next unit starts always at the beginning of new page
    3. Then I place whole text to indesign, in Import Options I preserve styles and formatting, and Page Breaks too. And usually I map word styles to indesign styles at this point... I bring the stuff in while pushing shift-key down,  that way InDesign places whole text with one click, creates even new pages if needed.
    4. Then I finalize layout in indesign, I make sure that all the styles have been converted correctly, I check page brakes and add few if needed...etc
    So I don´t use any XML feature for that kind of work at all. It usually makes things much more complicated and demands more preparations at InDesign end...

  • Comparing an excel file to and xml file and appending data to the xml file

    I have an xml file (mapsource) and an excel file. One of the columns in the excel file matches up with a node in the xml file. I want to be able to loop through both files and add a new node to the xml file where the one of the columns in the excel file matches a node in the xml file.
    I can create a query object out of the excel dosument using the cfspreadsheet tag.
    I'm able to use xmlparse to create a xml document object from the xml file.
    What I would like to do is add col_3 from the excel spreadsheet as a new node when col_2 is equal to gpx.wpt.name.xmltext of the xml object.
    Any help or direction would be very helpful!

  • Images and XML forms and Images and scaling

    Hello,
    I have two questions about using images in XML forms.
    1) How do I insert images into the XML form editor.
    The thread HTML Editor in XML Form? (Posted: Aug 26, 2004 7:50 PM), discuss how the HTML Editor in XML forms can be extended to be able to insert images like in the KM editor.
    Has anyone any practical experience with this?, as the thread is fairly old.
    And is there other solutions which are more suited?
    The portal is running on WAS 6.40, EP 6.0 SP11
    2) Is is possible for the portal to scale images
    In the portal, different users will use XML forms to publish news stories. These users will want to publish images along with the text.
    In many content management systems, the system will automatically scale the images (e.g. create one thumbnail, a mid-size image and keep the full size) Can this be achieved in the portal.
    The reason for this is to make sure that no one can post a very large image and to make sure each image is the same size.
    I'm interested in hearing how other people, solve the issue with uploading and scaling of images used in the portal.
    Kind regard,

    hello, this is a support forum for the firefox browser - the issue you've described isn't really related to that though...

  • What is the difference between import and merge?

    When setting up my wife's new account on my son's MBP, I did not migrate all of her photos as they were in 2 or 3 separate iPhoto Libraries.  I researched this forum and found the best way to merge all of her libraries is to buy iPLM.  According to a post by Terence Devlin, if I don't use iPLM, thumbnails, previous editing, keywords, etc., will not be imported.  OK, but if we only want the originals photos and there was no editing or ratings or keywords, can't we just use the "Import" feature?
    According to Apple's instructions, the way to import one library is to first switch iPhoto to open using that library (hold down the option key when opeining iPhoto and selecting that Library).  Select your photo's, and the go to File>Export.  Then quit iPhoto and switch to the new iPhoto Library and go to File>Import and select the file that was made during the Export.  I suspect this is the approved method if you are not concerned with importing the edited photo's, keywords, etc.  Is this correct?
    I recognize from LarryHN's posts why you can no longer just drag and drop the files using the Finder, but if we don't use iPLM, I wanted to make sure I use the correct method to combine Libraries.
    BTW, speaking of using the Finder, do any of you remember the Multi-Finder?

    Yes that's correct. Remember you are not importing libraries or merging them or combining. You're exporting from one and then importing those exports to the other. That's getting the photos from one to the Finder. Then importing them.

  • XML impoerter and changes to an xml file

    hi.....
    i am making some changes to a seeded oracle page, i have opened the xml page and made the changes, then i have put it on the server and used this command for the xml importer, and stop, start the apache BUT nothing changed on the page donno why :(
    this is the XML importer command:

  • RoboHelp 7 and XML output

    Can RoboHelp 7 output topics as XML (.xml files) ?
    We are researching upgrading to RoboHelp 7 from our RoboHelp
    HTML 2002 versions. We skipped the X-series upgrades, but I recall
    reading that the X-series supported XML in some way. I downloaded
    the RH7 trial version and could not find anything in the Help about
    XML. Then it seems that suddenly an XML Output icon appeared in the
    Single Source Layouts pane. It was not there previously. I then
    could generate xhtml (.htm) files.
    We called sales who didn't seem to know and said we'd need a
    valid license to ask tech support.
    Can someone enlighten me about the history of the X-series
    and XML output, and what is actually possible for XML from RH7? And
    what you need to do to get the XML Output to appear in the Single
    Source Layoutspane? XML Output is not covered anywhere I found in
    help or knowledge base, but it seems so huge a deal that it makes
    me think I must be missing something.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Peter
    Thanks for your help. In the Single Source Layouts pane, I
    clicked create Layout, and selected XML Output, and it now appears
    in the Single Source Layouts screen. Still have some questions.
    1\ Do you know any of the history of what kind of XML support
    was offered in the X-series, and if version 7 offers less, more, or
    the same support?
    2\ Any idea why there is NOTHING mentioned in the RoboHelp
    Help if you search using XML or XML output? Even more curious is
    when I click the Help button from the XML Output Options box, I do
    find a topic called XML Output Options. I wonder why their main
    Search tool doesn't find this...
    We were hoping to migrate to XML using XMetaL, but Mgt is
    balking due to the time and costs involved in conversion and
    translation issues. Which is why we may need to upgrade RH2002 to
    RH7, so our legacy docs remain pretty much intact. But at the same
    time, we want to know what the current RH XML capabilites are, and
    are wondering what their plans are for the future, like, will they
    offer real XML out to the current major tech writing standard,
    DITA. We hope to start authoring new docs only then using XMetal so
    we don't take the conversion/translation memory hit.
    So yes, our XML questions are deliberate.
