Force Quit broken in 10.4.8

Since I installed 10.4.8 the force quit window won't close after I open it.
For example, an application crashes and I hit cmdaltesc to bring up force quit, force the offending program to close, then try to close the force quit window. However, that last step never works. I've even tried using cmd+Q, cmd+w, and tried to find it in activity monitor, but no luck.
Could someone please help me with this, it's incredibly annoying. It means i have to restart the computer every single time i use force quit because the window stays on top!
Cheers

To attempt to resolve this issue try the following suggestions...
1. Open Disk Utility, located in the Applications->Utilities folder. Select your boot volume and click "Verify Disk".
2. Using Disk Utility select your boot volume and click "Repair Permissions".
3. Download and apply the Combo update. This version of the 10.4.8 update is much larger than the one the Software Update application offers because it will update any version of OS X 10.4.x. It refreshes ALL files that have changed since the original version of 10.4. A good percentage of people find that applying the Combo update resolves problems. Of course make sure you download the Intel version for your Mac Book.
The above suggestions are pretty much standard troubleshooting procedures. Hopefully one will do the trick. If not the next step is to start looking for preference files that may have been corrupted during the update.
If you are an experienced troubleshooter and have already tried these tips I apologize.

  • Mavericks Preemption (Force Quit Broken)

Does anyone know how I can configure Mavericks to remain interactive even under high memory pressure?  (Don't care about maximizing benchmarks; care about always being able to move the mouse and force quit a runaway process).
Unlike previous verison of Mac OS X, my cursor completely freezes when an application (such as Virtual Box) creates high memory pressure in Mavericks.  Instead of beind able to kill the process (from a Terminal or Activity Monitory or keystroke), the only options in Mavericks is to hold down the power button for a hard reboot.
This seems like a major rewind in operating system technology.  (I haven't rebooted this often since the days of System 7).  What's wrong with Mavericks?  Can memory compression be disabled?  Can I renice some process(es) to restore 10.8.x behavior?)
    Thanks.

I had the same issue. Something would freeze on me, I would command option escape, but then that would freeze up and I wouldn't be able to actually force it to close.  All I did to fix this issue was use another way to force close. Hold Command Option Shift and Escape all together for three seconds and it will automatically close the window that is open.  I did that and it fixed the issue I was having.  I hope this helps!

  • ICal in Leopard uses max CPU and must be force-quit

I'm having a problem with iCal 3.0 in Leopard. When left running, eventually it will start to use my entire CPU for no reason. I have tried wiping out all of its preference files, and deleted all my "subscribed" calendars (in case it was maybe stuck trying to update one), but it's still acting up. Interestingly, when it goes into this CPU hogging seizure, if I try to quit it normally at that time, the program will quit, but then immediately relaunches itself as "hidden" -- as if it needed to remain open to finish some kind of indexing or something. I find I need to then force quit it twice before it will stay closed and quit being a nuisance.
    Something is definitely broken here.
On the other hand, at least the dock icon for it (appears to) always display the correct date now. Although I apparently can't leave iCal running anymore (unless I want to listen to my fan going full blast all day), I'm glad it no longer needs to actually be launched to realize it isn't July 17 every day of the year.
I've seen a few similar reports from other users. Has anyone found a workaround for this yet?

I did some more testing yesterday. I created a new user, launched iCal, played around with it a bit, and left it open for awhile. It never maxed out the CPU or became unresponsive, and appears to be working perfectly with a fresh set of calendars.
As I mentioned in my first post, I had already deleted all of the preference and .plist files in my regular user account, and that did not fix the problem. I have now concluded that there must be something "corrupt" in one of my calendar files (I don't think they are actually corrupt though; my guess is that iCal 3 just has some kind of bug that only occurs with some certain type of legacy data). If I could, I would simply delete those and start fresh, but I have far too much valuable information in there to do that. Unfortunately, it is not possible to export individual events; all I can do is backup and restore entire calendars. I tried that, and the problem continues, so I am at a loss as to how I can solve this without destroying several years worth of data.
As I am not willing to lose all of my old data, I guess I will just have to wait until this nasty bug in iCal 3 gets fixed.

  • Just downloaded the new version Dec 12.  It always says not responding after 5 mins so I have to force quit.  Any suggestions how to fix this?

Itunes latest upload Dec 2012keeps crashing.
says not rsponding after 5 mins.
Have to force quit all the time.
    How to fix?

    Well, two thoughts.
The battery has completely discharged and will take overnight to recharge, so don't expect much in an hour.
The battery has deep discharged and is now dead. It will never recharge and should be replaced.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers.
    iPod Service Support and Costs
    iPhone Service Support and Costs
    iPad Service Support and Costs
There are third-party firms that do repairs on iDevices, and there are places where you can order parts to DIY if you feel up to the task. Start with Google to search for these.
The flat fee for a battery exchange is, I believe, $99.00 USD.

My Mac has been in the shop (Genius Bar) 4 times in the last several months for an array of problems. They've diagnosed and replaced a broken riser and diagnosed (and I replaced) a defective 2nd back-up internal drive. I've also moved my large library of fonts (I'm a designer) to an external drive and now use Font Book to very gradually add only the fonts I'm currently using. Yet there is still the lingering problem that periodically an application will freeze and refuse to force quit. Some other applicatons may still be working fine. I cannot reboot; if I try to restart from the menu bar it disappears and the whole system freezes. So I have to turn it off with the power button, wait a minute and then start up again. This happens several times a day, although I am at times able to work fiveours straight with no problems.
[I've repaired permissions and zapped PRAM countless times.]
I'm now convinced there must be a software problem/conflict. But how the **** do I figure out what that is?
Oh, and of course this is all happening when work is insanely busy. HELP, please.

Try plugging the iPod into a different USB port - does it continue to freeze iTunes?

    Hey sunnyday7!
Here is an article that can help you address this issue:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3411
    Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.

  • Hi, I was trying to copy and paste a lot of  info for one day on my calendar to another day and an error message popped up saying that the system responded with an error. Msg won't go away I force quit ical

Need help for trying to unfreeze a message on my ical.  I was trying to copy and paste some appointment info from one day to another on my ical and a message popped up saying the system responded with an error.  All of my info was below the message.  I can't get that message to go away or work on the ical now at all.  I try to force quit ical and have shut down the computer and it still comes up.  Any suggestions?

    K,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, if you are using Lion, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then to to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Force Quit Won't Work/Epic Lock Ups

So I just recently started having trouble with my Macbook Pro involving applications locking up, and then not being able to force quit. Oh, they pretend to force quit. In fact they show dialogues saying they've quit, and their windows disapear, however in the force quit box, the cmd+tab window, and the dock the apps are all still there.
If I try and do a force quit again from the dock, the finder locks up.
The only fix is to force my computer to reboot, which cannot be healthy doing so much.
Other weird bugs is that once I do this forced shutdown/reboot my external drives will be missing files I previously moved to them (say I moved from drive a to b, after this forced reboot they'll be back on a and not on b)
The only thing I can think that's causing it is I have an external drive that's been acting up and I didn't start having this problem until the drive starting acting up... but I wouldn't think they're related!
Any ideas? I don't want to destroy my computer!
    Running OS 10.5.6
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

    True.

Why not? That's the first place I'd look! It's likely your Mac is going nutso (pardon the technical term) trying to talk to a disk that isn't behaving. Eject that drive and see if the problems stop. If they do, back it up immediately if you can. Then try repairing the disk and permissions.
You might also look in your logs. Note the time of an incident, then use the Console app (Applications/Utilities). Click Show Log List in the toolbar, then select Console Messages in the sidebar and navigate to the date & time of the incident.
Most of the messages there are gibberish to us mere mortals, but some may provide a clue or two. Copy a representative sample and post here, if you wish.

  • ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7  from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.

  • Upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1 for Mac, constantly freezes and crashes, have to force quit, bad bugs. Switching to Safari.

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1, and it now constantly freezes, won't respond at all, and has to be force quit and restarted. Within less than 5 minutes of use, over and over and over... I'm assuming it is a bug in the Mac version.... Am switching to Safari as I can't waste this much time constantly quitting and restarting and getting my tabs all back up. Any suggestions on ways to let Firefox know about the bug would be greatly appreciated. It worked fine until I upgraded :( Am running Mac OS X 10.6.7
