Force quit deleting my trash? It is stuck

I had a few gigs of photos, videos and other files in my Macbook Pro running 10.7.3 for a while now, and just got around to finally deleting the trash. It has been stuck with about 25% more to delete for a couple hours now. What should I do?
Thanks.

Thanks for the link, though since it is already in the middle of emptying the trash, which of these techniques would I follow?
Thanks.

  • Image import + iPhoto freeze + Force Quit = Deleted images

My wife imported photos from our samsung nv10. The import went well. She then began editing the images (probably rotating them to be upright, redeye, etc.) when suddenly iPhoto completely froze up. She let the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) spin for 10 minutes and decided to Force Quit iPhoto. When she booted up iPhoto all the pictures that she had imported were no longer in the iPhoto library and having selected the 'Delete Images After Import' option they no longer exist on the camera either.
Fortunately these were not once in a lifetime images, but nevertheless, it would be great if anyone knew what happened to the photos.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Also check to see how much free space you have on the Powerbook. If TD's suggestions don't help low free space may be a factor. Report back with the amount.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Uploaded pictures. Chose deleted originals. Took long time. Forced quit. iphoto uploaded a few, deleted most. Deleted pics in trash. Can't open w/ or send to iphoto. Help!

I was uploading pictures from my canon into iphoto. After the upload was completed, I chose to deleted the originals. The "finishing import" was taking longer than usual. I chose "force quit" because iphoto wasn't responding. When I re-opened iphoto, 60 of 370 photos had been imported. The rest were missing. I checked the camera, and the 60 that had been imported were still on the memory card. The rest were gone. I found the deleted photos in the Trashbin of my Mac. I can view these in Preview as JPEG files. However, I cannot save these to iphoto. Nor can I import them into iphoto. I also tried saving them onto a flash drive, but the computer said the JPEG files were corrupted and could not be opened from the flash drive after I saved them there.
Is there any way I can move these pictures into my iphoto library? Help is greatly appreciated!!!!

You can recover the files from the card with an app like  MediaRecover
The more important tip:  Never let your computer erase any data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
    1. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
    2. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
    3. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.

  • Safari Won't Open - 10.5.2 errors but running 10.5.5 - Stuck Force Quitting

Basic rundown of my problem. I went to click on Safari, the application bounced once in the dock and acted as if it was opening -- Safari name was in the menu bar on the top of the screen, but no browser window every opened. After a short while, the application stopped responding and I was stuck using "force quit". So I tried a few different things. Initially, I just restarted my macbook, didn't help. Then, I came onto the discussion forums, saw some tips. So I went and wiped out the .plist files and tried starting Safari, didn't work. I repaired disk permissions, tried it -- didn't work. Finally, I deleted Safari. I tried downloading it off of Apple's site and got an error saying I need to be running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer -- but I am running 10.5.5. So I came back onto the forums, saw a post similar to this and instead had a friend send me his Safari application and tried running that -- that didn't work. So I deleted that version and tried installing Safari off of my Leopard disk and that didn't work either.
So this pretty much brings me to my last options. Unless someone has an idea of what's going on based on the readouts I've copied below, I'll probably have to backup my files and wipe the computer to get everything in working order again. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks for your help!
EDIT: The readout that I got from the error in Safari is so long I can't post it in this thread... so if anyone is willing to take a look I can forward it by e-mail. I'd appreciate it, thanks a lot!

The first mistake was deleting Safari; that just created more problems for you. Resist the urge to think like a PeeCee user and delete things when they're not working correctly. The application is rarely the problem. Also, you cannot download Safari from the Apple web site; those are updates, requiring you to have Safari already installed.
You're going to have to reinstall Safari from scratch. To do that:
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. Insert your Mac OS X install disc, navigate to the Optional Installs folder and open the Optional Installs.mpkg file.
    3. Check the box to install Safari and run the installer.
    4. Download and re-apply the 10.5.5 Combo Update; this will get you back to Safari 3.1.2.
    5. Repair Permissions again.

  • I have a spinning wheel in Mail - stuck on trying to load a new message. I've force quit both Mail and my whole computer, but when I open mail again, it brings up the same new message - and the side bar curser is stuck in Drafts. What can I try to cancel

I have a spinning wheel in Mail - stuck on trying to load a new message. I've force quit both Mail and my whole computer, but when I open mail again, it brings up the same new message - and the side bar curser is stuck in Drafts. What else can I try to cancel

Can you log on to the email account via webmail in a web browser, view the email and delete it from there if necessary.

  • Have to Force quit Mail & cannot delete certain messages

I know some folks have already posted about this, but I've yet to find a solution. My mail continues to download the same, previously deleted messages each time I open it. I also have to force quit mail to leave it. It will download new mail from my .mac account while in this condition but will not access my other sympatico mail account. In order to get new mail I have to force quit and reopen the app. I've considered the 'rebuild mailbox' option but all of these annoying messages are in my inbox and there appears to be no 'rebuild' function for the inbox. I've also tried going into my library and manually moving these files to the trash and restarting mail. They appear again. Can someone please offer me a solution to this problem. All I can think of doing now is getting rid of Leopard to go back to Tiger mail.
    Thanks

Hold the phone. This, apparently, may be a Bell Sympatico server issue after all. I've tried to get in contact with their support people and the message says that they've been having problems. Also, my wife, who only uses .mac mail recieved the same email (that keeps popping up in my inbox) and has had no issues. I retrieved my mail using my newer imac as well and the same problem occured there. Hence, it is probably not an app issue, but a server issue.
Thanks all for your help. Hopefully I can resolve this with Sympatico.

  • I imported vacation photos, got the color wheel and did a force quit. Now I can't find any of those photos, and of course I deleted them from the SD card when I imported them. Where can I find those photos?

I imported vacation photos from my cameras SD card and deleted them when the import was complete. Then I moved them from Events into an Album. When trying to move 2 photos as once to another album I got the color wheel and locked up. I did a force quit but when I go back into iPhoto none of the recently imported photos appear - not in Events, the album, trash, etc. Where can I find those photos?

backup the iPhoto Library and launch iPhoto while depressing and holding the option and command keys until the first aid window appears - rebid your iPhoto library

  • How can i delete an app on my desktop that says it won't delete because it's still open, even though i have done force quit numerous times.

How can i delete an app on my desktop that says it won't delete because it's still open, even though i have done force quit numerous times? I even deleted it's files in my Finder and it just won't go away.  Help please!! TIA

Restart the computer then delete it.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

  • Screen Saver stuck at 3 Minutes and spinning ball / Force Quit !

I am try to change my screen saver which is set at 3 minutes , when I open Desktop and Screens Saver, the spinning balls comes ( forever ) and I must force quit. I cannot change the setting, I looked up past problems of the same nature and found " Old Toad " giving advice for this problem, when I found the "By Host" folder I could not find the exact com.apple.screensaver.xxxxxxxxplist ( or something close to that ) that I should delete and then reopen my System Pref. I found others close to that , but that exact one, Any Help ? Thanks

I Think I found the answer, I found some com.apple.screensaver in the " ByHost" folder and dragged each one in and out until I found which one was causing the spinning ball problem, presently I have it in the Trash, but not sure if it's ok to delete form Trash, it must have been in the " BY Host " folder for some reason to begin with ? Thanks

  • Keep getting deleted emails back and mail will not close, have to force quit

i have 4 emails that will not stay deleted.I will delete them and as soon as i reopen my mail they come back. Its as if they never left. Then i can't close my mail.i have to force quit. I have read of other problems close to mine and tried there solutions with no success.I do not know if my setting in pref. are correct or not. This problem is not allowing me to recieve new emails i just keep getttting these same 4 back time after time. very frustrating.

    You're welcome.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
In order to fix the problem, we'll have to re-create Envelope Index. The thing is, Mail may choke on those messages while re-creating the index, so either be prepared for that or perform optional steps 1 and 3:
    1. (Optional, but recommended). Assuming this is a POP account, in the Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/, and identify the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. (Optional, but recommended). Move to the Trash the troublesome *.emlx files found in step 1.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    5. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
    7. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Spinning wheel, force quit mail, can't delete from "sent" box

Starting yesterday, I see a constant spinning gray wheel and it says "indexing" or "Copying 26 of 43 messages". I cannot delete emails from my "Sent" box. It appears they are deleting, but when I click off of "Sent" then click back on "Sent" there they are again. Nothing goes to my trash can. When I click on the trash can some of my mail icons are grayed out. And... I cannot quit my mail without force quitting--everytime. I am able to send and receive emails. I have tried Repair Disk Permissions and Verified. Didn't help. Any ideas?

    Thanks Mulder.
Neither of your suggestions solved the problem. Repaired permissions may times. It was not a corrupted prefs file.
It cost me several hours fooling around and still do not know exactly what it was. Pulled the "envelope" file out onto the desktop and fired mail back up... that resulted in the "loss" of a few recent inbox entries and did not solve the problem. Replaced envelope file with the original and now I have to rebuild all my mailboxes one at a time, as there are only headers for each email and a message in each email. The message says The message from xxxxxxx <[email protected]> concerning “xxx xxx” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.).
There are hundreds of individual mailboxes. Mail will not rebuild a folder within a folder.
I went around the back door to solve the problem of being unable to delete. Logged in using an internet mail program and deleted the offending emails. Shut the G5 down overnight and voila gone in the morning.

  • Since upgrading to Firefox 8.0.1, it is hanging when I try to open it. Deleting profiles etc. doesn't help. I suspect the problem has to do with caching or history, since when I first quit after upgrading I had to force-quit as it was hanging.

'''bold text'''MacOS 10.5.8 is my operating system.
There is no actual crash, thus no crash ID--it just hangs forever and eventually I force-quit.
    Restarting the computer hasn't helped
Downgrading to previous versions didn't help.
Deleting profiles and preferences doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Apparently clean re-installs hasn't helped.
If option-opening is really safe mode on a Mac, then that isn't helping, either. It's the same hanging.
No problems are being noted with any other software.
    I'm totally stumped--what else can I take off for a cleaner re-install?

Firefox hangs the same way in safe mode.
There is no such thing as a Firefox program folder on a Mac, nor is there an "uninstall" to do, so these directions are not relevant to a Mac user.
    The problem remains.

  • I have an iPod Classic and when I try to move songs from my library to my iPod, my iTunes freezes. When I tried to eject my iPod, nothing happened and I had to force quit iTunes. When I unplugged my iPod, all of my songs had been deleted. What can I do?

After attempting to move songs from my iTunes library to my iPod Classic, the pinwheel kept spinning and iTunes froze. I tried pressing CTRL E to eject the iPod, but nothing happened. I unplugged the iPod then force quit iTunes, but when I checked my iPod all of the songs had been deleted. I tried plugging the iPod back in and slowly moved music over again, but iTunes still froze. I don't want to restore it to factory settings because I am afraid of losing the pictures I have on there and can't figure out how to get them off.

    Are you using a Macbook?
If all your songs on the iPod are deleted, most likely the photios are gone too.
Unless you put the photos, via Diskmode.
To recover the photos that you've put in Diskmode, use Finder to locate where it is in the iPod.
Try also if iPhoto can locate those photos.
