Force scroll bar on JOptionPane?
Is there a way to force some type of scroll bar in a JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE ?
I have written a program that figures the first 1000 prime numbers as required by my instructor. However, when the final output box prints it runs off the screen. I'm some what of a net freak and would prefer to set a fixed value for the box and just have a scroll bar to slid through all 1000 numbers.
You could create a custom JDialog with a JTextField in a JScollPane.. I don't directly see how to add a scrollpane to a JOptionPane
Skip that. From http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=591040&messageID=3078312 :
JTextArea area = new JTextArea(sb.toString());
area.setRows(10);
area.setColumns(50);
area.setLineWrap(true);
JScrollPane pane = new JScrollPane(area);
JOptionPane.showConfirmDialog(null, pane, "Test",
JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION, JOptionPane.QUESTION_MESSAGE);Edited by: drvdijk on Feb 25, 2008 5:26 AM

Hi,
Suddenly while working with Firefox if I happen to drag the vertical scroll bar, a very abnormal behavior occurs. My screen dances up and down for a short time before either going black or getting restored but with no clicks working. The only way to resume is to force a restart of the system.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks and Regards
DeepakThat didn't work. On trying to install a new driver I got the error the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware. Is there anything else that can be done to at least prevent the hanging of the computer even if it means less features from Firefox being available?

Hi all,
I would like to force a vertical scroll bar on all of my pages to keep the page from appearing to shift on some pages (pages long enough for scoll bars vs pages not long enough to need scroll bar). On my site I notice it in IE8 and FF3.
I know this has been discussed before but I am not able to find it.
Here is my code currently in my style.css concerning HTML and body elements
html, body, div, span, applet, object, iframe, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
outline: 0;
html {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 76%;
height: 100%;
body {
color: #000;
margin: 0 0 0 0; /* Sets the margin properties for an element using shorthand notation (top, right, bottom, left) */
padding: 0 0 0 0; /* Sets the padding properties for an element using shorthand notation (top, right, bottom, left) */
text-align: center; /* Centers the page content container in IE 5 browsers. */
background: #2D4262;
How would I accomplish this?
Thanks
ChrisThanks for responding,
I tried both ways..I do not know CSS very well so I probably did it incorrectly.. Heres what happens when I tried both ways.
My background goes away if I add Michaels suggestion:
To see if I did it correctly here is what I had
html, body, div, span, applet, object, iframe, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
outline: 0;
html {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 76%;
margin-bottom:.01px;
min-height:100.2%;
And if I tried to add Murrays suggestion, nothing happened
To see if I did it correctly, here is what I had
html, :root { overflow-y:scroll; }
html, body, div, span, applet, object, iframe, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
outline: 0;}
html {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 76%;
height: 100%;
Again, I am probably not doing it correctly....
Thanks

Forcing verticle scroll bars or otherwise correcting for their absense
Hi,
I have a bunch of empty pages that can be gotten to from here:
http://www.medxmedia.com/REMsCentral/about_us.php
The second tab has some content and with the exception of the about us tab each page will likely have enough content to cause the verticle scroll bar to appear. But what can you do on the page that doesn't have enough content so that the navigation menu doesn't appear to jump to the right 16 px or whatever the width of the scrollbar is?
I've found several methods online for forcing scrollbars, but none of them seem to work or I'm not adding them correctly to the CSS.
I'd appreciate your advice.
Best regards,
Chris McLaughlin
Here's the css:
@charset "utf-8";
/* CSS Document */
html, body, ul, ol, li, p, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, form, fieldset {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
#flashMenu{
background-color:#FFFFFF;
width:925px;
height:220px;
margin:0px auto;
overflow:hidden;
#wrapper {
background:url(../images/medsBG.gif) repeat;
font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size:14px;
text-align: left;
line-height: normal;
color: #000000;
margin: 0px auto;
padding: 0px;
border:0;
height:100%;
width: 925px;
overflow:hidden;
.meds {
display:block;
width: 284px;
height: 46px;
padding: 12px;
float: left;
.website {
display:block;
width: 284px;
height: 46px;
padding: 12px;
float: left;
.PI{
display:block;
width: 284px;
height: 46px;
padding: 12px;
float: right;You have two options, add either one to your sitewide CSS.
1) Force a vertical scrollbar to appear on all pages:
html {height: 102%; margin-bottom 2px}
2) Force a vertical channel to appear on short pages:
html {overflow-y: scroll}

Force vert scroll bar & good design reference
OK, yes I'm a self-taught nube with LiveCycle. After numerous tutorials and lots of reading, I know I need to code to force vertical scroll bars to appear as default on a multi-line text field. I'm a designer - not a coder- and I have yet to find an example to plagiarize work off of. Can somebody please show me how?
Also, I started by scanning a form and letting LC design a form from that. As I explore the hierarchy, I cannot decipher the magical, mystical logic as to how text and text fields are distributed amongst cells, paragraphs, and rows; why some tables get a header row and others have the header shoved into a body row; and so on. To further my education, can somebody also point me to a good treatise (preferable on-line) for basic best-practices for design within LiveCycle?
Thanks in advance!

Question on vertical scroll bars in JScroll Pane
Hi,
I managed to display my chat program with a vertical scroll bars by using JScrollPane. Every time some on types a line, this is appended to whatever was previously in the JTextArea (the JScrollPane has a JTextArea in it). Even though this works fine, when the dimension of the JTextArea is full with text, one has to scroll down to see what was the last line of text that was typed.
Is there a way to make the verticall scroll area alwas scrolled down (I mean, scrolled to the bottom so I can see new incoming text without manually having to scroll it down?)
Thanks!
Cecilia.You might try adding a properties listener to the JTextArea listening for a "resize/size" property change and when it does, force the scroll bar to go to max.

I hate the narrow scroll bars in Lion. How to adjust?
I recently upgraded to Lion, which all seems realtively nice and well designed to me. In years of Apple developments, I have learned to appreciate the changes and gradually have come to appreciate most of the stuff they come up with. One thing really annoys me seriously, though, and that is the very narrow scroll bars! When I could easily find the scroll bar in 10.5, an 6. I now have to waste my energy on pointing the mouse at the very narrow scroll bar. Who the **** had the great idea to narrow it? There is NO WAY I can live with this.
Has anyone come up with a fix? If this is not fixable, I will downgrade to 10.6 again.

The point is that I dont have a trackpad on my iMac, and thus have to use an ordinary mouse.
Well, if I were in this situation, I would purchase a Magic Trackpad
But you miss the point: I am annoyed with the GUI designers for falling in love with their own design and not letting users choose what is best for their own workflow. This is a 'forced' change and a basic violation of all design philosophy. What would you say if the gearchange in your car had been reversed after a visit to the garage? Exactly! To force users to change their workflow is actually very arrogant.
Lion is a New OS. If I purchased a new car that had a new shift pattern, It should not be a suprise as I would have (should have) researched and test drove the auto before purchasing. A quick trip to the Apple Store, or reading on-line reviews would have allerted you to the change in scrollers -
Before the most recent upgrade, the bottom horizontal scrolling bar and status bar appeared on my screen. Now since upgrading, I cannot see the. Anyone ideas how to restore them?
If you haven't already, you could force-quit Quicktime by using the menu option from the desktop (finder) and choose Quicktime.
Not sure what you have frozen on the screen, be it a failed movie, or some unusual screen shot. If you can find by date (created) you may be able to look for .mov or quicktime suffix name or other video file content to delete it.
And you may have to restart your computer and perhaps run repair disk permissions from Disk Utility's first aid on the hard disk drive in your computer.
Not sure if all that would help now, but it is something a few days late...!
Good luck & happy computing! -

This is what the program looks like. topPanel has newItemPanel on top of it. when you click continue newItemPanel becomes invisible and newItemDescriptionPanel becomes visible. When you click continue newItemDescriptionPanel becomes invisible and priceEnterPanel becomes visible.
I want newItemDescriptionPanel and priceEnterPanel to have a scroll bar. but everything I have tried hasn't worked. I am new. You will see the code is ugly and there is an attempt to add a scrollbar.

}Mostly I see there is about 100 times as much code as I care to look at.
So you don't know how to get a panel in a scroll pane, and then get that scroll pane into your GUI? Then try doing that by itself, not encumbered with 10000 lines of irrelevant code. Once you have it working, plug it into the big lump of code. Or if you can't get it working, ask about the small problem here. -
How do I lock the scroll bar on, keeping valid HTML5?
I have a site that was originally created in FrontPage some years ago, and I have now redone it using Muse (not before time, I hear you say!)
There were several pages on the site where the content was not large enough to need to be scrolled on most displays, and some browsers removed the scroll bar from the right of the page when those pages were visited. This resulted in a shift to the right on those pages, which made all the fixed elements move on the screen when going between pages, which I found very annoying.
I fixed it by adding this code to the pages in question -
<style type="text/css">
/* Force Right Scrollbar */
html { overflow-y : scroll; }
</style>
This worked fine and locked the scroll bar on, and I wanted to do the same with the Muse version of the site.
I have added the same code using the add HTML feature, and it still works fine.
However, if I run any of the pages concerned through a validator, I get the error -
Validation Output: 1 Error
Line 23, Column 28: Element style is missing required attribute scoped.
<style type="text/css">
I tried to find out why this was, but all I found was a lot of standards documents which were mostly way over my head!
So, is there any modification I can do to that code to get it through the validator, or do I need to look at a different method of locking the scroll bar on on my web pages?
Thanks for any and all suggestions!
Dave.Thanks very much jgrummel and Vikas.Sharma!
Sorry for the delay in responding.
I have now added "scoped="scoped"" to the code, and the validater (http://validator.w3.org) is now showing just a warning rather than an error.
"Line 23, Column 44: The scoped attribute on the style element is not supported by browsers yet. It would probably be better to wait for implementations.
<style type="text/css" scoped="scoped">"
I'm not too worrid about that, as it is still passing it!
The code is inserted on the master page of my site, so it presumably propagates through to all the pages, including those that don't need it, but this doesn't seem to cause any problem.
The site is here - http://www.thedraculasociety.org.uk -
In iTunes 11, there is no scroll bar in full page Albums view. It does appear when you minimize the screen, but on my computer, the scroll is hidden and the resizing of the screen does not work. Is there a fix? Also, how do you sort tracks/songs in Album view? When I import lengthy audiobooks, the inability to sort through hundreds of tracks is really ticking me off. Again, is there a fix?
Apple... Before you tell me all the great features in iTunes 11, let me just say they are duly noted. But, I would rather have the option to do things on my own, rather than being forced to conform to your techies need to be creative. I don't use Genius or Playlists, so the ability to sort in them is useless to me.It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

Table with fixed header and scroll bar
Was able to use Dreamweaver 2004 to set up a table to display
data from a MySQL table. But then the customer wanted to have a
scroll bar on one side and fixed headers at the top "like Excel",
because the number of rows retrieved were too long to fit on a
page. This was harder than I thought. I had to use CSS and
Javascript with a lot of help to make this happen. Then it didn't
work in IE7, so I had to use a different approach for IE. I got it
to almost work perfectly in IE7. It just has a tiny bit of the
table visible scrolling by above the header rows.
http://www.ykfp.org/php/lyletrap/tabletotalscss13.php
Why does Microsoft make this so difficult? Why aren't web standards
good enough for Microsoft? Is there a better approach to tables
with scroll bars?When things go sour in any browser, validate your code. I see you have some unclosed <table> tags which could effect page rendering.
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ykfp.org%2Fphp%2Flyletrap%2Ft abletotalscss09.php
If you still have problems with IE8 after fixing the code errors, try adding this meta tag to your <head>. It forces IE8 into IE7 mode.
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7">
Hope that helps,

Hello,
My horizontal scroll bar is missing and disabled. Ive tried using overflow-x:scroll, overflow-x: auto, all of it. The scroll bar appears but is disabled. It works in Chrome and IE
What's up. Why would you disable the scroll bars? This makes NO sense.I see very similar results in IE8 and Fx14. Both have a scroll bar at a certain width and then as I expand the window (this is a 1440px display) the scroll bar vanishes. The width where this happens is slightly different, but not by much.
Please note that pop-up windows may display differently than regular windows. The script code for the pop-up can remove certain controls from the new window such as scrollbars. If you think this might be what's happening, you can force scrollbars in popups using a hidden preference.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''window_open''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''dom.disable_window_open_feature.scrollbars''' to switch its value from the default of false (don't disable sites from hiding scrollbars) to true (prevent sites from hiding scrollbars). -
JTable can't display column names and scroll bar in JDialog !!
Dear All ,
My flow of program is JFrame call JDialog.
dialogCopy = new dialogCopyBay(frame, "Bay Name Define", true, Integer.parseInt(txtSourceBay.getText()) ,proVsl ,300 ,300);
dialogCopy.setBounds(0, 0, 300, 300);
dialogCopy.setVisible(true); Then,I set the datasource of JTable is from a TableModel.
It's wild that JTable can diplay the data without column names and scroll bar.
I have no idea what's going wrong.Cause I follow the Sun Tutorial to code.
Here with the code of my JDialog.
